I went to this salon and got a balayage done by Riley. The overall experience was amazing. The salon is super clean and everyone is super welcoming. Riley is such a great hairstylist and explains every step of the process, making sure I'm comfortable. Fabulous Salon! Curly gals this is a salon for you! Melinda is my sytlist and she knows what she is doing with curls! She cut my each curl when it was still dry, you need to come in with your hair styled as normal, then washed, put in product, sat under a dryer and she checked my curls again to make sure they fell the way we wanted them to. Below you can see photos of what I asked (bright purple) and what I got (weird, barely-there pink) I was in shock. I had been so excited and looking forward to my Jan 19th appointment for several weeks, but unfortunately I didn't receive professional treatment. I originally booked a consultation with an artist - lets say artist A - but she was sick so they rescheduled me with artist B. I'm not sure if artist B provided wrong information to the front desk or if the front desk made a mistake, but as it turns out they didn't book enough time for the services I needed - the artist A told me herself. This resulted in rushed service in order for me to not miss my work meeting (which was 5 hours after my appointment time) There wasn't even enough time to get a decent blow dry - my hair had to be dried by two people and still I had to leave out with damp hair so I couldn't see the color until I got home and finished drying my hair after the meeting. I immediately called and requested for a call back so that I can chat with her and see how we can fix it. I had every intention to go back for that it wasn't planning on asking for refunds or anything. I never heard back from anyone the same day, or the next. At that point I went back to return the shampoo and to ask to speak to one of the owners. Nobody was there and I was told that they'll call me tomorrow. I missed their call because I was at work but honestly by that point I decided I don't want to deal with this salon anymore, even for a free fix (if they offered). I did send an email though to explain why I had asked twice for them to call me, but I'm not even sure anyone read it. I went to a different salon to fix it, basically spending the same amount all over again within a week. At least I finally got what I wanted and found my artist moving forward. read more

I would not recommend this salon. Several times two of the stylists would sneak in what they call a (gloss) which they applied at the shampoo bowl and not even ask me if I wanted this product. I had been seeing Carly for about a year. Then at the beginning of 2023 she started to put this gloss in my hair without telling me and I'd be surprised with an extra $30 charge at the register. Another time I earned loyalty points of $10 but Carly put an $8 product in my hair without telling me. I then after about a year or longer with Carly, I switched stylists. My first appointment with the different stylist, Gabby, went ok but she asked me if I wanted the gloss and I said I did not want it and I didn't want to pay an extra $30 for it. The last and final straw was when I made my second appointment with the new stylist. I asked the front desk what the cost of a partial foil was with Gabby and she told me $89. I said fine but that I didn't want the gloss. When my appointment was finished and I went to pay, I was not only charged for a gloss but charged $110 for a partial foil instead of $89! Several weeks later I was angry thinking about it and that I shouldn't just let them get away with treating their customers that way, so I spoke with one of the owners and she was very nice and understanding. She refunded me the $21 difference between the charge for a partial foil, the $30 for the gloss and the $25 tip that I gave Gabby. So I have to give much credit to the owner for fully resolving the issue. read more

I am a super regular of MACKK - I have been going there for almost 2 years now seeing Shannon. I LOVE surface products and what it's done for my hair (I've been continuously becoming more blonde with each processing treatment). It is SO healthy and strong thanks to the care Shannon has taken for my head! Today I went in for my mini gloss treatment and upkeep for my undercut and was in and out in an hour and a half!! I accommodated the stylist to change the appointment time, but when I arrived, I still had to wait 15+ minutes with no apology, and no explanation. I gave specific requests for what I wanted, and was ignored. The stylist does not know or understand how to cut different types of hair, which I assume is a basic requirement for obtaining one's license. Speaking of, I did not see her certificate anywhere. Are stylists licensed at this salon? She wasn't too concerned with making me comfortable and listening to how I wanted my hair to look, instead she chopped my hair quickly and got me out of the chair in record time. Maybe she would do well in a position at Super Cuts. My hair was chopped, like an over-priced chopped salad, and I will never go back. read more

I've had a LOT of bad experiences with salons in the past. But never have I ever, had any issues with this salon! The receptionists are wonderfully kind, and always remember me whenever I walk in. Even if I go to just buy product. Candace is brilliant and warm! Definitely the best stylist I've ever had. I moved recently and went to another salon. Big mistake! I was very unhappy with the results and learned my lesson. I don't care how far I move, this is the salon for me. If you've never been to this salon, or are on the fence of where to go, you really should try this salon! Ask for Candace! I just finished an appointment with Annie, (and by just, i mean i am sitting in my car writing this) and I could not be more happy. I came in with gross, faded blue hair and left my appointment with a beautiful blonde color. My appointment with Annie lasted nearly 5 hours but since she is so nice and so friendly, the hours flew by! Throughout the entire process, Annie let me know what she was doing to my hair, why she chose to do it, and how it will help the dreaded transition from dark color to light color. She was super honest, personable, and on top of that, one hell of a hair stylist. I highly, highly recommend this salon and the stylist! I used to live in the Crystal Lake area and started going to Salon MACKK after a family member suggested I give it a try. I now find my self driving a little over and hour each way every four Wednesdays because I haven't found anyone else who can make my hair look as nice as Chrissy! The entire staff is wonderful from the front desk to the stylists and owners. Everyone makes you feel welcome and its just like going to a friend's house. The owners have VERY high standards and pass those on to the other employees. No matter what you need done, you can be assured the stylist or technician can do it correctly. The salon is constantly updating the products and treatments they have available to make sure they can always bring you cutting edge and top of the line services. They also are very customer friendly. When they decided to stop carrying my conditioner I always buy, they contacted me and offered to special order a "stock pile" for me to have at home. They have continued to special order me the product to this day. Salon MACKK provides great service, style, and a friendly atmosphere. I wouldn't go anywhere else! read more

I had my grey touched up and got home and realized I still had grey spots in the back top of my head. The next time I went this same person left color in my hair. I got home and had to wash my hair. I asked to have my appointments moved to another stylist which they did. I had someone else do my hair for almost six months and then had to move my appointment and some how got this same person again. She tried to comb color through my hair which would have covered the highlights and the low lights. When I asked her why she was combing the grey touch up color through my hair, she said she was trying to make it even out. I called to ask the salon to make sure this person never does my hair again and they refused. Honestly I should have left the salon a long time ago. I had two stylist that could do a great job with color but did terrible hair cuts .Very inconsistent, over priced and most stylist have a limited schedule! read more

1st time here and i love my new hair . Candace did an amazing job . My hair was many different shades and coloring myself was not working out . I kept getting dark tones on the bottom and light on top. Always looked like an opposite ombre. I didnt quite know what i wanted so she was patient and showed me colors that would work for my current hair . I appreciate the honesty. She also made suggestions on my hair type to make it look not look so heavy and flat. i will post before and after pics. They also use Surface salon products very healthy for your hair. My hair feels so healthy after the intense conditioning that was complimentary cause a friend referral. Also while i was there ran into my neighbor lives about 20 houses down from me in Gilberts lol. Top notch salon with a friendly group of talented professionals in the suburbs, a true gem! I used to live in Crystal Lake and now I drive nearly an hour each way because I haven't found another salon that can do my color and cut just right. Chrissy, Kristin, and Andy have all cut and colored my hair over the years and they are all amazing. I learned the salon trains everyone on the same techniques, so I'm comfortable with more than one stylist. They truly listen, make suggestions for my type of hair, and it always turns out looking amazing. My most recent visit, I wanted a new shorter style, Chrissy cut around 6 inches off of my hair and it looked exactly like I had envisioned! I'm ready for Fall! Over the years they've also made product recommendations and allowed me to sample products. I'm now completely hooked on Surface hair products and most recently their Glo Minerals make up line. Gina really knows how to choose the best cut, style and color for your hair type and face shape. I love being able to go in and not worry about what's going to happen. I have so much faith in her that I give her a basic rule about no bangs and let her do whatever she wants. I always leave looking my best. I tried going somewhere else once and they fried my hair. Gina couldn't get me in, but they found another person to fix my unbrushable hair. Gina made time to give her some tips on what I like and how to best fix my hair. I went here today for the first time based on Yelp reviews. I have short, reddish hair and have bounced around trying to find someone who could do my color and cut. Candace did my hair today and she did an awesome job. The red color is beautiful and shiny and feels wonderful. They use products called Surface and it seems to really improve the condition of your hair. Usually after getting my hair done I run home and wet it and redo it myself. The way Candace cut and styled my hair is so perfect, I am going out tonight and dont have to do a thing to it. The shop is very nice and comfortable, everyone is very friendly, the music they play is upbeat and modern. I am so happy that I tried this salon and look forward to going backi in 5 or 6 weeks. The last two times I had my hair colored there after 10 days I noticed the grey was showing up not just at my roots but down the whole strand and my hair was not holding color, it was getting brassy. I asked my stylist and she said she diluted the color. I was so shocked I could not justify going back. After going to another hair salon, highly recommended, my stylist could not imagine why anyone would dilute color. My color now lasts 6 weeks. read more

I've been here twice: The first time, the service was good, but the color was much lighter than I had hoped for. Can't blame the stylist, because I helped pick it out. I was pleased and just went back for a second visit and had five inches cut off, so a new style completely. She did an amazing job!! It is exactly what I asked for. Every single one of them has been kind and patient, and they always go out of their way to make sure that you are 100% satisfied when you leave. The best part is that they all work TOGETHER. Chrissy Nestelberger... Has been my stylist for a few years now and she's FANTASTIC! You know how there are times when you want to do something different but aren't sure what to do. Chrissy ALWAYS gives great advice but knows her clients well enough to NOT take them out of their comfort zone! Now that's a great hairstylist because she knows her clients so well! I've also had the pure enjoyment and relaxing experience to have had a few mani and pedi's with Jeanne. Did not have a good experience. Half the stylists are owners (which are the only ones you should go to) and it's nearly impossible to get an appointment with them cuz they don't work weekends or nights (or very limited). When you get stuck with one of the overpriced newbies, you'll understand why I have chosen to not go back. The girl was so inexperienced she had to grab an owner to finish the haircut that was already half botched by the time she got to it. She fixed it the best she could, charged me so much I nearly choked, and then continued to relentlessly sell me crappy Surface product. There are undoubtedly good stylists here but you'll have to book way in advance to get in with one of them, and their haircuts are $70... which if i absolutely loved it I would be okay with but it was not a haircut I was in love with. It has been one of the most disappointed experiences in a hair salon. The place is nice and clean and the stylist was very sweet with me. But, after the haircut, my hair had no movement at all, it was a boring haircut, no life in my hair, I can't even see any of the layers I asked for... there was no style on it!!! One could hardly say that my hair is curly!!! I asked also for an eyebrow shaping and she just used some wax, but, AGAIN, she didn't do anything to shape them. They looked even worse than before. Neither my husband, friends or colleagues at work have noticed any change!! When I go to a hair salon, I expect to feel my hair different and with more style than when I do it at home.
