After setting up an appointment for 2:45 with one person, arrived to find it was actually set for 3 with someone else. Not a huge deal, but I didn't see anyone until 3:15. Kinda annoying. I told the girl she could be creative, but I wanted to be able to pull it behind my ears. First thing she goes for is the chunk of hair in the front that goes behind my ears and cuts it shorter than the rest. WTF. The rest of the time was spent preaching me how I should use hair product, dye my hair, and "take better care of myself." Not appreciated. Good points do include nice scalp massage/ shampoo, beautiful salon, and I appreciated knowing they don't do tips on credit cards up front... not that it mattered much. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!!!! If you care about what your hair looks like you will not go here for a hair cut. Super Cuts will do a better job. The first thing i said was I don't want my hair cut short, just take a little off the sides, the back and around the ears. Oh we busted out the buzzer and jacked up a huge section of the side of your head. "My Bad" This is why I try to only go to my 70 year old Italian Barber when Im in my home town. He takes 30 min to cut my hair tells me funny stories and provides life advices and knows what he's doing. Instead of trying to rush me an give me the cut they think I want. Let me start by saying, I am very picky when it comes to my hair. I have long long hair, and I'm one of those chicks who are always nervous some scissor happy stylist is going to give me a shoulder length nightmare (no offense to you shoulder length ladies, just makes my round face look rounder). I moved to Denver in June, hadn't had a haircut since may, and waited til august to even consider it. Being a woman on a new found budget I searched for a budget conscience haircut. Yelp led me to the Aveda academy and I am so pleased it did! I had planned on going to a pure talent $11 haircut stylist but the receptionist dangled Christel, a $40 advanced stylist in my face and I just couldn't say no, it is my hair after all, and I've paid much more than $40 before. I sat in Christel's chair and told her I needed a couple inches taken off but I was very nervous about it, she completely reassured me and we were off on our hair-cutting adventure. 40 minutes later I was in hair HEAVEN! This is one of my favorite haircuts I have EVER had! I quickly sent a pic to my boyfriend and he said some very complimentary but very inappropriate for yelp things. I can't say enough good things about this place or Christel, check it out for sure. read more

I have been here a number of times to get cuts by non-students who have chairs in the space. The first time was o.k. The haircutter had no input when I asked for direction but luckily I brought in an image. The same for the second cut with another person. The third cut I came in for I found someone I really clicked with. She gave a great suggestion and I was prepared to hunker down with a stylist. I came in to see her 6 weeks later and again I left feeling great about her suggestions. I liked her work so much I scheduled several appointments through the year. I suppose there may be a lot of turnover here because the Friday before my next cut the salon called to say my stylist was no longer with them and they did not have any further contact information for her. When I called back the receptionist was less than polite in asking what I wanted to do. I told her I would need a suggestion for a stylist and her suggestion was that I simply cancel my appointments. Not helpful. I left a message for the manager to offer a curly hair/short hair recommendation and she did. I took the recommendation and can say it has been the worst cut of the 5. It is uneven and was looking like a puffy eraser head less than 2 weeks after the cut. Oh bother. The most irritating thing was that by booking my appointments ahead of time I guess you get a discount. The salon offered me that discount when booking with this new person. After I got the cut the reception person did not honor any sort of discount when I mentioned all of this and was a little snot about the whole thing. The discount was no big deal, the gesture would have been nice. My last interaction with this salon will keep me from going back. They are 3-star with mediocrity because some stylists are great, some are simply haircutters. They are losing a star because the reservation and desk people have been snotty before. read more

I absolutely love it here! At first I was scared because when they tell you it's $12 (1st visit) and a student styles your hair, you kinda cringe?! But ultimately, these students are picked out of an elite to aspire to Master! I was ver impressed by the courtesy, mannerism, professionalism, and beauty etiquette they proposed to me. You have the option and level to choose your stylist as a student or Master. The cost is definitely a deal breaker unless your really picky on who does your hair. First they question your hair preference for the style (not pushy or demanding at all) very informative with subtle advice. They start off by a complimentary massage (invigorating). Then off to wash your hair (relaxing). Then sit back and relax while they take you from not so fab to ultra fantabulous!!! While waiting for your appt, they offer a beverage bar on the 17th Street, inside their salon. Oh and need I not forget, they just started serving wine during your glamorama styling ;) Trust me, go for the first time, you'll be hooked! read more

Ok folks, I really don't want to slam the place, but once all my highlighted hair broke off, I can't help it. I read the reviews before I took the chance a few months back. Yes, even the cut will take forever. But the cut was good. The color on the other hand, not so much. The stylist added way too many highlights, so I felt like I had this frosted thing going on. But since she did the foils first (slowly I might add) and then the all over color second (still slowly), the bleach was in way too long. From start to finish, the color was in my hair for about 75 minutes. Yikes! About a week later, I had major breakage. Wihin a month, most of the highlighted hair had broken off. Yes, you can save some money, but I would stay away from any highlights or bleach treatments. Salon is cute and everyone was nice. God love em... They are learning. Just wish this hadn't happened. read more

This is a rockin' place, and, to be sure, it's a great value for the money. Since I moved to Denver last year I've been looking for a salon that doesn't cost me my first-born. After bouncing around to several different places, all of which cost a ridiculous amount of money for a hair cut I 1) could have done myself OR 2) walked out looking like Molly Ringwald in St. Elmo's Fire, I've finally found a great place. Sure, it may be a little scary getting your hair done by students, but the plus side, in my book, is that the student actually LISTENS to what I want, and works very hard to give it to me. It's not like they are putting first-day students on the floor; these people have had numerous hours of experience. I will definitely be going back for all my hair needs- and my hair looks fabulous! For years, my Aveda salons have been about providing Customer-centric experiences, this stylist/venue just doesn't seem to get it. And let's face it, I was willing to pay Aveda prices to experience exactly that. I love the products and the 'vibe' of the place but sitting down for 40 minutes to listen to my stylist/colorist bitch about how much he dislikes his current situation is not my idea of relaxing 'me' time but then to be charged high prices (which I gladly pay because of what I've come to expect from Aveda), it's just overall not a nice experience for the money. Also, this salon has a policy of cash only tips which I find incredibly inconvenient since if my service is $280 (cut and color) that's easily a $50 tip but then when I question that policy, I'm made aware of the problems of taxes for the stylists when it's anything other than a cash tip. A Customer should NEVER know that nor be made to feel it's their problem when all we want to do is tip for service. Because of this salon, Aveda has now lost my business. read more

I've been getting my hair done here for the past two years. Honestly, it's pretty great, price notwithstanding. $16 for a haircut is pretty amazing! (peretalent option) Your first one is $11! They've occasionally forgotten to do the small massage in the beginning or ask about the makeup thing at the end (which I don't care about anyway), but those are tiny imperfections. My experience has been that everyone there will really listen and go for giving you a great cut. I've always done the puretalent option and honestly the one time they accidentally put me with a regular salon person I didn't feel much a difference. Actually, maybe that was the one time I felt like the person was not listening to me as much as she should have been. The cut still looked good though, even if a little different than I envisioned. The last cut I got was from a girl named Sarah and she was fantastic. On a sidenote, I got a manicure there once and that was a mistake I won't repeat again. The atmosphere is nice, a little cafe inside the Salon, offered tea. They even offer to run out and add quarters to the parking meter! Pure Talent is the way to go. read more

The hair cuts where generally good. The issue is their stylist are in and out of there like a revolving door. I hate having a different stylist every other time. My other piece of advice, they like to quote you one price then when you are done and paying they tell you it's more. My first experience here was pretty good. The second experience...well, it was was certainly memorable, but for all the wrong reasons. $120 (a cut and full highlight - wow, who said this place was inexpensive?), two separate trips and a total of five hours later...my hair was...well, still F***ed! The manager was less than concerned and more than rude. I realize this is still (somewhat) of a school, which is the only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one. It wasn't the student that was a disappointment, it was the whole (five-hour) experience and lack of management or customer service that left a sour taste. I had to leave (my second appoint, which was an scheduled to fix my hair after the first appointment) with wet, un-styled hair. Why? Because the single hour appointment I was PROMISED, and used my lunch hour for, turned into almost a two-hour appointment. To add a cherry on top, I still had to pay full price without a single word from the rude manager. Nothing! Not a sorry; not a "how can we make this better?"; NOTHING! It's worth a try, but I wouldn't expect more that that. read more

I was with Haley for a cut and color and wow, She's great. We talked and an inch really was an inch, is an inch. I went to her after 2 other failed haircuts within a month. Gosh finding someone good is really hard and i'm grateful I had enough hair to spare. The color was what we talked about, natural and she managed to put in some subtle highlights. It was a really terrific job. And for the price of just one hair cut in SF i was able to get cut color and highlights. Now i just need to keep flying back to get my hair done. Love Haley! I had always been reluctant to go to a school but lately my regular stylist was not making me happy any longer. So I decided to try the academy, at least it would cost a lot less. I walked in and was greeted by Kat!! She was amazing! What I like is the time the student and instructor took to understand what the client is looking for and how to achieve it. Yes, it takes longer but to me it's worth it. I saved a great deal of money and because of that I went back for a cut and partial highlights. Never have I had highlights so I wanted very little. That's exactly what I got. Now I will go back and have her add more highlights. Kat graduates in September and is moving back home to Minnesota. I am surely going to miss her, but in the meantime I will have her do my hair and enjoy it read more

I've frequented a few Aveda Academies around the country, and this one was definitely one of the nicest, and busiest (good sign!) that I've seen. Definitely can't beat $11 for your first visit...i'm pretty sure Supercuts is more expensive. Crazy. Be sure to allow a little extra time if you are going with a student- I went in for a trim and spent almost an hour total in the salon. Again, it's worth it, just make sure you plan ahead. After searching for awhile to find a great stylist without the hit to my pocketbook I found the Aveda Academy and I was very impressed. I found that I got a great cut for a great price. I highly recommend Salvador. He's great. He does a good job and does it quick! One thing though... when you pay with a credit card there isn't a place for tip. I left the salon feeling okay but quickly realized something had gone terribly wrong when I got home and messed with my hair a bit more. I came in the first time recently for a simple trim. I thought that I would take a gamble on one of the trainees since I was only looking for a simple bob just above my shoulders. Though my stylist was very sweet and asked me a lot of clarifying questions, the actual cut itself was very, very poorly executed. My cut has no layers at all so I cannot change my part without it being extremely uneven. One side is also about a cm longer than the other. Because she kept trying to even it out, my hair line is about an inch shorter than I had asked for and now I cannot pull it up to disguise what happened. On top of that, this whole process took an hour and a half. Never in my life has a simple trim taken more than 90 minutes. And it wasn't because of the educator check-ins, those only took one minute each. The stylist was just way too slow and couldn't cut my hair evenly. Unfortunately I have to go to a real salon and pay a high price to have a professional fix it. I would highly recommend against going here unless you're feeling lucky. read more

When I got home and washed my hair to style it the way I like, I realized it was completely uneven. I cut a few pieces myself so I can go to work without looking a fool but the fact I have to pay someone now to fix it is extremely frustrating. I went to Aveda for color correction from a brown brassy highlights to a beautiful blonde with light and lowlights. I saw Margaret , she was great I felt like we were good friends by the time I left. Margaret listened to what I wanted made sure that I was happy , she gave me a great cut and color that I'm able to style every morning without anything special and it looks great. To be honest, I really don't think Aveda products are all that great. However, I love their commitment and policy towards customer service. I have Asian hair and my stylist's name is Shell (short for Michelle), who is also Asian and gets my hair! She's also great with men's haircuts. My fiance is very difficult to please and likes his hair cut with scissors instead of clippers. He went to Shell and really loved his haircut. In fact, he decided to go to someone else once who botched his cut into a very short mullet and since then he has made sure to book an appointment with Shell. :-) read more

There were too many groupons sold to accommodate that time frame. Also I called the same day I wrote the initial review and left a message on the managers voicemail. I have very dry skin in the winter, and a friend of mine recommended that I try having a facial. I had never had a one before, but I thought that it was worth a try -- I was so frustrated with my skin! I made an appointment at Aveda and was booked with JJ. The experience was AMAZING! She was very friendly and professional and provided a completely relaxing whole body experience. It was truly a spa service. My facial was done with soft music playing while I was wrapped in warm blankets. While the face treatments were working, she used to time to give me both arm/hand and leg/foot massages! I had no idea what I was in for! It was sooooo relaxing and I walked out of the salon feeling like I was actually glowing head to toe. Not to mention, my skin has never felt better! I don't know if all facials are like this, but I am addicted now, and will definitely be back to see JJ. I highly recommend this experience, even if you aren't having skin problems! read more

So, it turns out this place rules. I have always been fond of stylist academies, since I've found that student stylists' "giving a shit"-ness is often more than enough to compensate for their relative lack of experience. The fact that there are a ton of very cute, down-to-earth women at these places has nothing to do with it. So it was with high anticipation that I booked an appointment at Aveda Academy. Having been to the Paul Mitchell school in San Diego before and received both an awesome and a terrible haircut, I decided to take an average of my expectations and go in with mediocrity on the brain. I selected my stylist based on a recommendation in a Yelp review, so go Yelp! Kelsey M. greeted me as soon as I entered. I treated her like a bartender and told her my personal tales of woe, and asked that they be interpreted as best she could into hair art. She obliged, giving me a kick-ass haircut in a surprisingly short amount of time. The massages (both scalp and arm/hand) were simply amazing. I couldn't help but feel a bit self-conscious at first, but the rush of endorphins that followed eliminated any embarrassment I may have had. Having a haircut that required only one product (which she didn't pressure me about at all, by the way) only added to what ended up being a pretty much perfect experience. She somehow managed to perfectly straddle that line between being able to keep my corporate job with my haircut, and not having a haircut that makes me look like a narc. Apparently, Kelsey has earned the right to raise her prices soon. Luckily, it's still a stupidly good deal. Five stars for Aveda, and five stars for Kelsey M.! read more

Jessica Malone is the queen of balayage. And I'm a tough critic. She will talk to you at length when you come in to make sure she understands exactly what you want. I find it rare to find a colorist who will dedicate that much of your time together to a consultation. This is the very reason she is able to give you exactly what you ask for. The April 2009 issue of 5280 Magazine ("The Bargain Issue") featured the Aveda Academy Denver as a place to go to for bargain hairstyling. I'm already a loyal fan of Aveda products and it didn't take much to convince me to schedule an appointment with one of their PureTalent stylists (an apprentice stylist). I have been in Denver less than a year and have been on the search for an Aveda stylist that does great work and doesn't cost a fortune! My search has ended here! The only reason I didn't give the salon a full 5-star rating was because the receptionist who booked my appointment neglected to remind me that my appointment was also the same day as the Rockies Opening Day Game! I was extremely annoyed and frustrated that I spent an hour cruising down Market St. and paid a RIDICULOUS $17 in parking. I was told at the time of booking that I could find metered parking with no problems. At check-in, my friend (who also had an appointment) told the receptionist that we should've been told about the traffic related to Opening Day and all we got was a very insincere "sorry". Not good. Now, onto the real reason why I'm raving about this salon. My stylist Bea Hellman did a fantastic job with my partial highlights. After a brief consultation, she described exactly what she would do and told me up front, what my total price would be for the services. I hate hidden charges after the services are completed! She also gave me an awesome hand massage, using the Carribean Therapy products (scrub and lotion). Heaven! Bea did an exceptional job with my highlights and I would certainly recommend her to anyone. I hope she stays at the Aveda Academy at the completion of her courses because I will be one of her most loyal patrons. read more

I came in looking to shine up and pizazz my dull and lackluster looking curly hair. I specifically requested and waited for a stylist that understands curly hair. I was looking for some professional advisement on the color, since I am not a, uh, stylist. I should have known right off the bat when the gal, who appeared to be around 19, nice as she was, seemed pretty clueless as to what to suggest. I was hoping she would take into account my skin tone, etc, and recommend an appropriate color for my tone and age. Finally, after just being annoyed at her lack of direction and how long this decision making process was taking and wanting to get on with it, I left it up to her 'professional' discretion. Well, yikes, she was off the mark. The color looks a bit weird, like I'm wearing a wig or something. And so much for my curls (that honestly, many women try to emulate) or she being a curl expert...she all but insisted on giving me a blow dry and straightening my hair. I left not knowing who the hell I was. After an hour went home, showered, and got my nice curls back and tried to wash out some of the dark. Meh. read more

Case in point; Aveda Institute: high school graduates (drop outs?) cut your hair after washing your hair in pretty smelling Aveda products putting you in a cloud of disillusion. I had a Groupon for a 60-minute facial. I expected the "60" minutes to be 10 minutes of selling me product and a subpar facial like so many discount coupons end up being, but I'm broke and I like facials! I have had Aveda facials before but HOLY SMOKES, this was the cadilac of facials. The esthetician JJ is outstanding! She was kind, asked questions, got me tea, ensured I knew what she was doing and picked thoughtful things for my skin. The whole experience was indeed a full 60-mniute facial, and she even put makeup on me afterwards for my blissed out walk back to work. Thank you! read more

I see Mimi for my haircut and color. She's excellent. I have fine, blonde, very curly hair, so I need a lot of dimension with highlights and lowlights. She does a great job, and the color looks great for months. I also have extensions I like to put in sometimes, and she's able to match those perfectly so that they look completely natural when I have them in. Plus, she's great to chat with and listens to what you like! The shape of the cuts she gives me are perfect for curly hair (avoids the triangle shape by putting in lots of long layers). I'm sad that we are moving next year, since I've finally found a great stylist at a reasonable price in Denver! Also, seriously consider dishing out some money for the Damage Remedy serum. I use it every day as a leave-in, and it lasts about 6 months. It's done wonders for keeping my ends healthy! read more

This was the best hair cut experience I've had in Denver and it was very affordable. I scheduled an appointment online with a master stylist. I'm not sure how you get the lower priced cuts with the students, so I just selected on of the master stylists whose schedule worked with mine. I was greeted by a really nice receptionist who offered me a drink. I waited about two minutes and then my stylist was ready to take me over to her chair. The space is very modern, there are several chairs, but it wasn't crowded at all. Ellie cut my hair and she was awesome! It was one of the best cuts I've ever had. She cut off about 5 inches and was really nice, personable and energetic. The entire time she explained what she was doing and made sure we were on the same page. She listened to me and totally understood my vision for my new haircut. She took her time, but the whole cut took about an hour. I love that she also took the time to dry and style my hair and gave me tips on how to do it. I will definitely be back and I highly recommend visiting Ellie for a cut! read more

Having moved here somewhat recently I've been putting off getting my hair taken care of since I had no idea where to go. Finally last week I determined it was absolutely necessary to do some research and that is how I stumbled across the awesome Aveda Academy. I made an appointment for a Friday at 5:00 and was thrilled to find a parking spot right outside the door. I checked in and was offered a beverage and told it would be just a few minutes. I patiently waited for 15 minutes when I was greeted by Anna. She was great! We did a consult on my hair figured out the best color and off she went to mix the product. I loved that Anna didn't chat with me the entire time I was in her chair. She let me relax and I was a huge fan of the hand massage given. After we were through I was SO happy with how my hair came out. She offered a make up consult/touch up but I had to pass since I was running late. The only problem I had was that I didn't leave the salon until 7:20. That's almost 2.5 hours which seems like a VERY long time to get a single process hair color with a blow dry done. Maybe that's the norm but when I was at an Aveda salon in Chicago with masters students it never took that long! With that being said I will certainly be back when my hair calls out for help again but I'll be sure to budget the 2.5 hours in when making the appointment!! read more
