Had an amazing 1st haircut and full highlights (platinum blonde) done here. I live super close by and they were able to get me scheduled on a weekend a day in advance. I definitely recommend calling ahead to book just to be safe. Van did my color and Leslie did my cut. It turned out exactly how I wanted it and still looks amazing! Stefano: Booked a same-day appt online. over the course of the appt it became incredibly clear the stylist was on drugs. It took 32 minutes to get through the "hair washing" in which he couldn't find shampoo or conditioner. Also burned my scalp at one point. Finally got to the chair, where he thought I couldn't tell he was just pretending to cut my hair, making snipping noises with the scissors behind my head. He said a fly kept hitting him in the head (there was no fly), before deciding it was a wisp of hair. He dealt with that by spraying himself in the face with a spray bottle every 90 seconds. The "hair cutting" lasted 6 minutes per the clock. Then he "dried" my hair (half of it). That was the strangest, worst salon experience of my life. Overall salon seemed clean and like a place I would go back to, and management did refund the cost, so up to three stars. read more

I was visiting Denver for a wedding and needed hair and makeup. I was told about Salon Moda and I was not disappointed. When I walked in, I was talking about the altitude and a slight headache; immediately the owner gave me a glass of water. Jessica quickly introduced herself and we talked about styling my extensions. She also told me that paraben and sulfate free products were a must as well as specific oil for proper maintenance. Now I know which products to purchase. Jessica did my makeup perfectly. She spent 1 1/2 hours with me and the end result was amazing. She is incredibly professional and knowledgeable about current trends and is a true artist. Great experience with Amy during my haircut and gloss treatment! I came in with some heavy face framing layers I didn't love (from another salon), which Amy managed to completely fix while still leaving enough length to keep me happy :) I was also in and out of the salon in less than an hour and a half, which I felt was very efficient. So, I just want to preface this review: I love my stylist (who doesn't work here) and if she didn't keep moving further out and working shorter hours I would have stayed totally faithful, but we finally got to a place where I literally can not find time that works for both her and I! So here I go finding a new place to get my hair done. Deep breath! The unknown is the scary part!!! So how do you find a stylist (I've had mine for going on a decade)? You ask friends. OK, when you crap out on that front what the frickity frak is next? Yelp of course! Having moved jobs and now working downtown I really wanted a place I could go on lunch. Aveda Acacdemy seemed to have the perfect blend of good reviews and good location. I booked my initial hair cut through their website (I liked that you could see everyone and their prices up front so I wasn't just going in blind). So here is where they lose a bit of a star - it is weird. While the appointment process is easy enough to do, they make you prepay (which I was OK with), but they don't just take your credit card, no they make you buy a gift card for the amount?! Why? If you can process that transaction just skip the gift card thing and charge me. It was weird! But whatever. Hair: I went to Anita and I loved her! She was friendly and helpful about care for my hair. Plus, she didn't try get me to chop tons of inches off (whenever I have strayed I find that I get stylist who think I should be in a pixie or something) and she actually made my hair look and feel better than it has in a long time. Why did I leave this place to begin with? The drive would have been worth it, I'm glad I came back! I came in for a color correction and roots touch up that should have been done a week before by another stylist else where. Needless to say, she forgot about my roots before she applied the bleach for balayage. Who wants to celebrate their milestone birthday with grays and bronze hair? I have been going to this amazing Salon before and thought, why not return? I called and luckily Sarah (Level 4 master stylist) had an availability the next day! The day I celebrate my 40th, Sarah came to the rescue! She was so sweet, funny and had such a fun personality! Sitting on her chair was a blast! 2.5 hours later, I looked like I was 27 all over again and she even styled my hair for my birthday night out! I had a wonderful experience and an even better hairstyle when I left. I was a "walk-in" on a Saturday and they were fully booked. The owner, Kevin, was working at the front desk and was very kind and engaging. As I was leaving to attempt to find another place, he came out onto the street and stopped me. He said that he believed he could fit me in 60 minutes later. It was so awesome that he actually came out to get me and work the schedule. That level of customer service is rare. The environment was welcoming, clean and enjoyable. The stylist, Tiffany-Dawn, did a wonderful job and provided multiple suggestions for what would look the best and fit my lifestyle professionally and as a woman. This place used to be fantastic, when it was the Aveda Academy. But since they moved and rebranded... it's a glorified great clips. My wife was a client here for over 7 years, but will not be going back after she was aggressively accused of receiving excessive discounts through her previous stylists who recently left the salon. One of the managers made her cry and then told her that she was being unprofessional. ‍ My wife has some serious health issues, and the front desk and stylists used to really work around her health, but it seems like they are struggling to keep their staff... I guess all good thing come to an end. **Update... we were able to track down MJ and Ming at another salon by Union Station- Carson & Co. They are legit great, and are stunned by what Capelli was trying to charge and how they treated my wife. Looks like I know where I'll be taking her from now on! read more

If you have curly hair, Tara is the *best*. I've been going to her forever. She's an awesome listener and you can tell she's truly *obsessed* with doing a great job with curly hair. She's also great with color. She really cares about her profession, and it shows in her work. I have thick hair with curl and cowlicks, and I can't even tell you how many bad haircuts I've had. Tara just gets it. She does my son's hair now as well, since he was getting fed up with horrible haircuts from cheaper places. The salon is cute and everyone is nice. This is the only facial I've had since living in Denver. Since my skin is still adjusting to the dryness, I can't really talk about the quality of the facial just yet. That said, I'm going back in four weeks and following the rec to add on a facial peel. It was very thorough so I expect great results for reasonable pricing. Tracie was so kind and thoughtful in the experience. I really enjoyed the questions she asked in the beginning to truly customize the facial. I don't usually relax all that much in a facial. It's not really my priority. I am just too flenchy while someone is touching me. The service room was right next to the little coffee shop. So every once and a while, you'd hear a blender fire up. Not a complaint, just made me want a frappe! I wish I had known before I got there that there was a coffee shop attached so I coulda given myself more time to partake. I love this place. Decently priced cuts with sytlists who are being trained in the latest techniques. Personally, I do not enjoy chains like Cost Cutters because I always seem to walk out with something I feel is a bit dated. And I am not a high maintenance girl. I blow dry my bangs and am out the door: a stylist's worst nightmare. However, when I get my hair cut, it's important to me to have a dialogue with the stylist about what I want, because I never bring a picture but I do have a general idea of what I want. The last time I went, Sierra did just that. She gave a great little scalp/shoulder massage, got the trim finished, blew out the hair, and then helped sculpt/frame the front the way I wanted. It happens every once in a while in a woman's life. She look in the mirror and thinks, "What the hell is wrong with my skin?!" I'd been having that moment every day for about two months, so I finally decided it was time to do something about it. I bought a Groupon and I made an appointment to get a facial. Go ahead, get all the jokes out of your system now, I'm probably going to say facial a few more times in this review. I'll wait. *pause* Ok, I made the appointment for a 60 minutes facial and that's exactly what I got. We had a consultation and then Rachel applied a whole bunch of awesome creams and whatnot for 60 full minutes. Not 45. 60. That right there gets them brownie points. Before I went into the nice, dark, relaxing room, my esthetician, Rachel, sat down with me and we talked about the problems I'd been having. I melodramatically explained that I was turning into a lizard woman and that my skin was an uneven mess. We decided from there that it would be a moisturizing and exfoliating facial (I told you to I'd be using that word a lot) and while the various applications sat on my face, I got a wonderful hand and arm massage and a foot massage too. It was a really wonderful, pampering experience. Just a heads up, they have add ons for each facial that cost a little extra and they'll ask you whether you want to upgrade or not once you're in a blissfully relaxed state. For me, I added a plant peel or something to mine because I was desperate to fix my hideous face. It was $25 and it was worth, but you should probably be mentally prepared for those questions before you go in. The room I was in was fairly large but Rachel was like a ninja in there. She was quiet, sweet and focused, which was perfect. I highly recommend her. We talked afterwards and I dropped some cash on good face products that she thought would help with my complexion. The bottom line is that my face is freaking awesome now. The facial kick started the change from lizard woman to a lady with very soft, supple skin that I can't stop touching. You can touch it too as long as you aren't a creep about it. read more

Unfortunately, I am guilty of box-dyeing my hair. Yes I know it has disastrous potential, and yes I know that it's not that great for you hair, and I also know that it's hard to do a thorough, quality job yourself, but for the last couple of years I've been guilty of coloring my own hair. While the results haven't been horrible, I am fully aware it could be better. So instead of buying another box of black hair dye, I thought it was time I act like a grown up and get my hair professionally dyed. Now, part of my motivation for dyeing my hair from a box for so long is the cost of DIY versus the cost of a pro. Seven dollars for a box of dye is a whole lot more affordable than a salon. Because of my cheapness, I decided to check out the puretalent at Aveda Academy. The cost for color is about half of that of a professional salon, and the stylists are all licensed. When I called to make my appointment, all of the puretalent stylists were booked up, so they offered to book me with a regular stylist, but only charge me the puretalent price. Bonus! My appointment was with Tracy, and she was incredibly sweet and thorough. I was not exactly decisive, so her patience was much appreciated. I had her dye my hair dark brown/black, and threw in some reddish/violet pieces in the front. It turned out awesome. The hair cut was not half bad either. All in all, for the price I paid, I got a hair transformation. She obviously knew what she was doing, and worked with me to make sure I was happy. Definitely a great deal, and the results were beyond what I expected. I will never dye my hair from a box again. read more

I've spent my summer toiling away with work and needed some pampering, based on the glowing reviews from fellow Yelpers, I decided a new haircut from the Aveda Academy was in order. I booked something online, not knowing any of the stylists, I went for the most moderately priced. When I arrived, I was greeted with a cup of coffee and waited about 15 minutes past my appointment time. I explained that how that no matter wherever I go, I always get the same haircut, even after asking the stylist not to give me the same haircut, and to try something new. I explained that I didn't want to get the same haircut, and that I was a blank canvas. "Please do whatever you want. If I want the same haircut again, I'll go to Floyd's. But I chose this place hoping to get a new style." I got the same haircut. And for $40 more than I expected from using the online booking. I may has well have gone to get the same haircut twice more at Floyd's or something. Then came the product push. I felt like I'd been to see a shady used car salesman instead of a salon. Except car salesmen don't give me creepy hand massages while a towel is over my face. I didn't have a good experience. read more

The Aveda Academy, not to be confused with the nearby Aveda Institute, is on Market Street just East of the 16th Street Mall. Like the Aveda Institute, it's where all the licensed Aveda hair dressers go for continuing education, but it's a lot smaller and less frenetic. You can request a staff hair dresser or get your hair cut by a hair dresser that's just in for training at a discount. I requested a staff hair dresser. After arriving fifteen minutes late, because I had confused the Aveda Academy with the Aveda Institute, which was just a few blocks away, I was greeted with a little bit of attitude and was told that I wouldn't get the scalp massage because it would make her other clients late. That was fine. It was my mistake. (Although I have to say that I don't know how many times that I've had to wait for a hair dresser, and they've never given me a discount for wasting my time!) The real problem was the cut. We just weren't communicating and she cut and texturized my hair way more than I wanted. The cut itself wasn't bad, and for someone with a more texturized hair-do, this may be the perfect hairdresser. Additionally, they've perfected the art of the hard sell. Before you even leave the seat, the hair dresser is checking off every product that she used on your hair. Before you can leave the salon, they have to show you the product on the wall and explain to you why it's so great and hand you the list. (Why couldn't she skip this rather than the scalp massage?) After I thought I was safe and paid my bill, the cashier asked me if she could freshen my make-up (the thought of which horrifies me!) All I needed was to give them another chance to up-sell me. I would never get out of there. So although they seemed competent, the cut wasn't worth the hassle of going there. read more

I've been to this salon now two times and requested the same stylist both times. She did an amazing job both times. I do have a few complaints about setting up my appointment. I called ahead and a gentleman put me down for the stylist I asked for. However, when I arrived at the salon they had me assigned to someone else. I was a bit upset because I specifically asked for one person. After 10-15 minutes of them trying to figure out what happened I was able to see the one I requested. Immediately the stylist remembered me. Noting that it would take longer to do my hair because I have ethnic thicker hair she increased the price to $45 or 50. I was just told at the front desk $30. I wasn't happy with this surprise. I thought it was a bit unprofessional and I should I been warned ahead of time. She agreed to charge me $35 this visit but more the next. She did an amazing job however, I wont be back. I like to know ahead of time the pricing and have a smoother check-in. I went and got my hair did by the lovely Biljana Z here last week and she is basically a miracle worker. When I see a new stylist I like to go in knowing what I want done but ask them what it is that they would do, 9 times out of 10 I end up having to politely steer them back in my direction. It's really more to get a feeling for their style and how they work. I did this with Biljana and she nailed it. I was growing out a cut that had once looked good but was now a complete disaster, she suggested EXACTLY the same thing that I wanted, we went with it and it looks fantastic. She was great about explaining all the product she used and when she walked me to the register, she offered to show them to me in the shop, no pressure whatsoever. Bonus that this place is only two blocks from home so I get to strut my way back to the loft feeling completely and utterly fabulous the entire way. read more

THIS is the place to go if: #1: You are cheap, er, you like inexpensive blow outs. #2: You are okay with rolling the dice on a new grad and discovering either 1 hour or 2.5 hours later what type of hair skill set they possess. #3: You like SUPER friendly front desk, oh heck, errybody's nice up in there! I've been going to this salon on and off for the past 6 years. Most times, I tell them that I want someone who does "black", "ethnic", "textured", "kinky" hair, so I'll get ahold of someone who knows what they're doing. They all know me by now, so they KNOW that my hair is deceiving: looks easy to straighten...fine and more curly than kinky, but when you get me in front of a blow dryer, watch out! HELLO VOLUME! I have lots of hair strands! Which is good for a broad my age, I guess. Usually, however, I just let anybody blow out my hair (hey, it's $18), then once I get someone I personally like and whose style and skill set I admire, I latch onto them like a crab! I tend to stay with that person for a few years, until they leave the salon, then it's back to square one. Or I'll follow them for awhile, until I get sick of paying for $50 blowouts, then it's back to Aveda I go. Currently, I see Margaret. She's straightened and styled my 3b/c curly/kinky hair for the last two months. She has been open to experimenting with my hair, and how to get it from super curly to bone straight. She's blown it out like nobody's biziniz, then flat ironed it. She's also round brushed it. Recently, she stumbled upon the coveted Boar Brush blow out with a flatiron touch up. Parfait. I HIGHLY recommend her if you have curly/kinky, or as Margaret says "textured" hair. She also is a GREAT stylist. She knows her stuff.
