Running low on time while traveling I wanted to get my hair done before flying home. It's nearly impossible to get a salon appointment at good Black hair salons anywhere on weekends - but the stars were in my favor and there was one availability. I walked almost an hour to the salon to learn more about the area. It was a delightful journey. I love the location of this salon. I'm told the area is called Back Bay. Lively, diverse, collegiate peeps, tourists peeps, countless shops, near Charles River, and a gazillion other things. The salon is on the second floor of a brown stone with views of the sidewalk and outdoor action below. While small in size the interior design is lovely and well laid out and the work I saw the stylists doing was mighty. Jamecca was my stylist and I gave her a hall pass in giving me a fresh cut and style, the only limitation being to not mess with the length except to remove unhealthy ends. I got a nice wash, deep condition, new style, blow dry, and layers and volume back in under 1 hour! Bonus was a reasonable price! I'd definitely return when in Boston. i would give this place zero stars if I could. The hairdresser here was so messy with shampoo, rough with both combing and cutting my hair. When she was blowing it dry she had the hairdryer pointed right in my face instead of brushing and drying the hair away from my face. Ladies, I never write reviews but I feel this could save another woman from having her crowned ruined. Yesterday evening I walked into into Shelle's salon excited and came out crying. Please save yourself the heartache and do not get serviced at this salon. I am a platinum blonde 4C natural of 5+ years and have been coloring my hair with a trusted stylist since. I consulted and explained to Shellee that my stylist was unavailable and I was in need of a re-color for a photoshoot this weekend. (I never go outside of my trusted stylist -- ever). Sent her pics of my regular look and asked if it was something she could make happen. She told me she could make it happened and I confirmed my appointment with Salon Monet the same day. After the first process, I was ready to run for my life. I should've but I sat there and listened to her bribe me into another process which led to a complete over processing of my hair. My hair went from a circus orange to yellow, even after the double processing. I told her I wanted to pay for the service and just leave , but she insisted I stay and "let her do her job" .. just so she could leave me with sores in my head and an over processed, dried out brittle look that was far from my desired look. She blamed me for everything. Telling me that I wanted a refund from the jump and called my stylist "ghetto" -- to then accusing me of "bad mouthing" my own stylist (something I would never and have never done). She went on to telling me that she would issue me my $175 refund -- to then threatening me and saying that "we will take this to court". Let me repeat this again: I have painful sores in my head. Fast forward to this morning: I sent her a text this morning explaining the pain in my head, showed her these pics and this was her message reply (pics attached): 12 June 2021 1:01 PM Shellee: "Great then stop texting me go back to your ghetto unprofessional stylist that you bad mouth about in my chair!!!" Not great with Natural Hair (4a-4c hair textures this salon may not be for you!) Shelly the owner is very nice, however I drove over an hour and want to share my experience so that no one else experiences the same hair trauma If they have a similar hair texture to mine. I have long, thick 4a/4b hair that is tightly coiled when wet. I asked for a steam treatment, she shared that she has a great treatment under a hooded dryer, no steam treatment offered. So we proceeded with the treatment she recommended. She kept recommending a Keratin which my hair does not need, which was the first flag that she would not be able to properly do my hair. I have never needed a Keratin, black hair can look perfectly great without one if properly done. I am visiting Boston from DC and most stylist there are amazing with natural hair. This was by far the worst natural salon visit I have ever experienced. Here are my woes: Heavy handed- too rough with course hair. Ripped through the hair, I was extremely worried and traumatized the entire time. I shared that I was tender headed, hair that is wet should not be handled like this. Deep Conditioning- did not penetrate the hair well enough, my hair felt like a Brillo pad as she blow dried my hair ( this was the worst part of the entire experience) she was raking through my hair and it was breaking off, my hair does not usually shed as much, I also had a clump of hair at the bottom when I ran my hands through my hair at the end of the service. My ends also look very split. Styling- My hair was not well styled or smoothed out, my hair did not look at all finished at the end. I gave her a photo and my hair looks nothing like the image I showed her. My hair usually looks like the photo, My hair is usually fabulous, not today! I am almost in tears, my ends are split, I will now make another appointment with my DC stylist this week and Im sure she will have to take off a few inches. Course hair has to be very carefully handled. I truly regret coming. If it was just a styling issue, I would not have written this review, but since the integrity of my hair has suffered, I must share my experience. Although Shellie and her team is sweet, in my opinion she is not a good natural hair stylist for course hair, you might leave with your hair damaged. I got my hair keratined and cut by Shelly and I am exceedingly disappointed. She cut my hair while it was curly, leaving it extremely choppy and uneven once it was straightened -- something she did not fix once she was done. In addition, I asked for a trim, but because of the way she cut it, I may have lost from 2-3 inches in some spots. From so many awards that they seem to showoff, I assumed that they would at least have the knowledge to know how to give someone an even hair cut but it seems not. read more

They said that would be too late, I was still charged the complete amount for my appointment. Meredith is awesome! I purchased the Groupon for a full set of eyelash extensions and I am blown away. I've done extensions before and the 'full set' wasn't full at all. I was a little leery of the Groupon but I heard good things about Meredith so I took the leap and I am so happy I did! I went for something quick when in Boston. It's very small, very poorly appointed and resembles a tiny ghetto type apartment. When I say it was overpriced my goodness - even if it were bumble and bumble, the cost of a cut was ridiculous. The fact it was so flop house like made it even worse. I went to this salon because my other one didn't completely straighten my hair which meant flat iron use. It is completely out of my price range, more than double what I was paying before. "You get what you pay for," I was told so I decided to stop pinching pennies. I got a relaxer and a few days later, my hair started falling out and I realized my hair still wasn't really straight. They comp-ed me for this by giving me three deep protein treatments that seemed to slow the damage. I got a very mild relaxer at the end of the year and left to visit family. During that time, my still not straight hair began tangling badly and again falling out. I wrapped it up and only took off my scarf to moisturize. Bad idea on my end. After returning to Boston, I went in, again got a treatment. My hair looked good and healthy for a few days. The treatment was comp-ed again. I went to another salon. During the consult, the stylist took a close look, called over another person, then another. They offered to cut it. I went to the doctor, got blood tests and had my diet scrutinized. They couldn't figure out a physical and emotional cause for breakage. Before a series of job interviews, I went in to have them do something with it. The two stylists also stated that I should consider cutting it. One attempted to convince me that the tiny bit of hair I had was plenty while a third stated that it was too short to braid. I had my hair gelled to my scalp and a fake pony tail pinned on. This was not comp-ed. I put a scarf over it, put on my sunglasses and walked over to The Closet where the crying turned into awkward sobbing. It is the second time I've ever cried about my hair. The first was after a disastrous jheri curl in elementary school. I wore a scarf to the job interviews. During the two weeks that followed, my hair didn't seem to fall out. I took out the pinned on pony as the pins were stabbing my scalp. After taking them out, I realized that the gel simply masked the problem. Breakage continued. I could have expensive salon B cut it off for an absurd amount of money or I could do it myself. The crazy bits of longer hair that were peppered not-so-liberally had to go. End result: less than half an inch of hair, several hundred dollars spent in less than 3 months, an itchy wig, a strong aversion to salons plus loads of time, energy and mental real estate wasted. read more

BOSTON'S BEST HAIR EXTENSIONS? I THINK NOT! The salon certainly isn't in the poshest location on Newbury...but it's OK. Decent enough. It's pretty small and lacks an air of professionalism...but it's about all about the service, right? After arriving for my appointment ON TIME, I was forced to wait around for twenty minutes while Shellee, my extension "artist" (and I believe the owner), finished curling her previous client's hair. Fine, fine. I can be patient. When my turn finally came up, she quickly went about weaving in my hair extensions. She installed four tracks of hair and the entire process took about 45 minutes. Shellee was admittedly very, very nice and we spent the time chatting about Boston springtime and the various celebs she's met in her day. Then came the time for the big reveal. Hmm. It looked OK. It looked about as OK as the salon decor: fine, but could've been much, much better...especially considering the price you pay for the Newbury St. name. The extensions were stringy (not surprising considering she only installed four rows of hair) and blended poorly with my own hair. I was pretty disappointed, but being the pushover I am I thanked her kindly for her time and left her a fat tip of $250. Being a service industry girl, I tend to over-tip...even when unhappy with services rendered. Say what?! A tip of $250?! Yep, that's another issue I have with the salon. The price for those four rows of tracks she sewed into my head was $1,000. Now, anyone who knows anything about hair extensions and weaves knows that this is an OUTLANDISH price! We're not talking about strand-by-strand fusion application (which is always a pricier process), we're talking about A WEAVE! The MOST you should EVER pay for a weave is around $300. If only I knew then what I know now! All-in-all I feel I was a naive newcomer to the extension world who was taken advantage of by a salon purporting to be a high-end establishment, sitting pretty in their affluent Newbury neighborhood. In reality what I got was sub-par service at a ridiculously inflated price: an emperor's clothes situation, if you will. I literally could've gotten better results (at a much more fathomable rate) if I had taken some hair wefts to the local barber shop and told them to wing it! One of the consequences of living in Boston is that there are few places that can do African American Hair without spending your entire day waiting around or sitting under the dryer or in the shampoo sink while a stylist is working on three heads at one time. This salon is not that place. In fact, I live next door to such a salon that I am willing to go out of my way to get to Newbury Street. The moment I came in, I was greeted with a hello and was sent off to the shampoo. I had destroyed my hair (completly dried out) and the stylist transform me into a new person: flat ironed, curled with a nice condition and shine. I was also happy to see that they had a nice retail selection of Keracare and Phyto products which I purchase. The end price was very reasonable considering it was on Newbury Street. I know nothing of the scathing review (or the reviewer for that matter-not sure if she was looking for princess service). I booked an appointment to get my dreadlocks started. When I spoke with the receptionist I was very specific about the length of my hair, and made certain I asked if it would be able to be done. She said yes and quoted me a price of $64 which was based on, she said the length of my hair, the time it would take, and included a student discount. I went to the salon today, and when I arrived the stylist Jamecca told me she had to look at my hair which I was not expecting. She informed me she would not be able to do the service because my hair was to short. I explained to her that I had discussed this with the receptionist who assured me my hair was long enough. Jamecca had another client in her chair and it appeared to me she was running behind and making excuses for why she could not do it. She also told me it would be $90 which is much more than I was originally quoted. I drove one hour in bad weather conditions to have to turn around. My appointment was not to have my hair looked at, it was to have my hair done. I should have been informed if the purpose of the appointment was to consult. I feel this is extremely unprofessional, and obviously the staff are not all on the same page when it comes to pricing and services. My worst experience ever! The first time I ever got a weave put in , I wanted to go somewhere professional and i had no budget, so I chose this place. When I got home I hated the tracks and the the shedding was ridiculous, I would comb my hair and two seconds later it would be all KNOTS, no ladies, not naps, full-on knots, clumps even. She used cheap quality hair that was dry and nasty and after I saw the horrible "style" she cut my hair into i cried, so I took a pair of scissors to my hair. After i cut it, liked it and decided I would definitely get a weave again but most definitely NEVER AGAIN IN THIS PLACE!! Guess how much she charged me......guess. My daughters have abundant natural hair-- the kind that's called "difficult" by most stylists. It's not easy to find someone who can do a protective hairstyle that stays put, in decent time. For 9 years my daughters have gone to Salon Monet. Josette and Jamekka are the 2 most talented natural stylists we've found. Shelley, the owner, keeps her prices reasonable and is warm and positive with clients. The atmosphere is deceptively casual, almost family-like, because Shelley's employees stay with her; that said, the salon styles a number of celebrities. The hairdos are beautiful. Natural braids, twists, box braids, weaves, blow outs, are all done professionally. No hopping from client to client, and they are ready when you arrive. Highly recommended. read more

I have been to this salon 3 times. And on all occasions, the price quoted to me have been different from what I was actually charged. That is fraudulent and sneaky if you ask me. I am a student so I do have a budget. I make sure to ask first about the cost for any services I want. One day I went in for a wash and blow dry. The stylist told me $55, but the receptionist charged me $80. Another occasion I went in for a color, the stylist told me $100, but I was charged &145. My point is they are dishonest. Be upfront with clients and don't lie about pricing. For this reason, I won't be returning to this salon and will not recommend it to anyone I know. Briefly, in regards to my experience having my hair done. It's a below average salon. the stylist Jamecca cannot work with natural black hair. She kept tugging at my hair with a brush and my hair was breaking. Instead of carefully detangling it. I don't feel the stylists in general care about the health of clients hair. I made an appointment to get my microlinks extensions removed and when I came in for some reason the hairdresser, Shelly, did not want to remove them and convinced me into doing a "tightening". I had done a lot of research on microlinks before getting them and saw countless videos of microlink tightenings. Shelly claimed a tightening and a haircut would be $75 and my extensions would look brand new. When she started "tightening" I noticed she was just knotting my rows of extensions together with thread instead of actually moving up the microlinks. I asked her if she was going to tighten the microlinks and she said no and that would be a complete removal and redo... I let her do her knots and give me a haircut (snipping an inch off the ends) which all took about 10 minutes of actual work and I was just under the hair dryer most of the appointment. I go to pay and somehow the price jumped up to $90. Anyways I pay and even tipped her then over the next 2 days my scalp was in extreme pain that I had never felt before when I originally got the extensions put in. She put one piece of thread running vertically through all the extensions and it's extremely uncomfortable. I called back to ask to have the thread removed and my money back for the tightening and Shelly ever so nicely said no refund because of all the "time she spent" and told me I was supposed to actually pay more for the service I got lol. Shelly seems nice but her work is horrible and overpriced. I paid almost the same amount as the entire installation of my extensions just for her to do 2 knots of thread. And now my scalp hurts and I need to pay another salon to remove her dirty work and I just hope my actual hair is ok under her knots. Do not recommend! read more

It looks like I am not the first person to have an issue with pricing on a certificate with Maitrieya. I bought a living social for $125 which was for a foil. I thought it included the base (AKA 2 process) but I was mistaken. However Maitrieya was very accommodating and said it would cost $40 more to add but it would have to happen over two visits. In fact, she said she'd cut me a deal of $10 for the trouble. My hair came out great after two visits but I was shocked that I had to pay another $110 when I thought the difference would be no more than $40. What's worse, they only credited my certificate $99. I sent a follow up email and it took over a week for them to answer. Maitreiya offered me a $20 credit on the phone. Subsequently I got an email from the owner. Came in for the first time today. I have very kinky natural hair and Josette was my stylist. She was very good, listening to my needs and very attentive. I received a wash, DC, trim and blow dry/flat iron. My appt was at 3:30 and I was done at 5pm. Great timing. Only thing that bummed me out a bit was that I asked her to wrap my hair which she did, but little did know, the wind was brutal once I stepped outside, so hair and hair wraps were a mess because wrap wasn't secure. Hair was a wild mess by the time I got home. Note: do not use online system to book appts. I used it, paid the deposit, but when I called to verify, the appt wasn't secured. However, Josette was able to honor my appt and the deposit. Salon is very small, but I believe they are in transition at the moment. Also they are on 4th floor not 2nd. Salon Monet cares about the health of your hair and gives you honest advice on how to get it back to a picture of health. I went in on a Sunday. Being so busy I neglected the fact that I needed a touch up (relaxer) for quite some time. So I booked my app went in and must I say, it was a wonderful experience! The stylist was onpoint during my consultation as to how long I had gone without a relaxer. The service was great and I will surely go back again! I am looking fabulous again! So many things wrong with Salon Monet and Spa I don't even know where to start. I wanted to treat myself with a nice haircut at a nice hair salon on Newbury Street, so when the occasion to get a Dealfind coupon just for that presented itself, I jumped on it. You would think that a hair salon on Newbury Street has to be somewhat good and decent right? Well, think again. If these are the qualities you are looking for in a hair salon, this place is definitely not the one you want to go. I should have turned around right at the beginning, all the warning signs were there but I had already bought a Dealfind coupon and wanted to use it. Fist of all, the place was difficult to find, as there was no apparent sign in front of the building. If you look up, you will be able to see a little sign in the window of the first floor with the salon's name on it, not my first instinct when looking for a business. The main door was locked. After buzzing a couple of times, someone finally came down to open. She did not say hello and seemed upset by the fact that she had to walk down to open the door as I could not get in by myself. I took a seat in the waiting room; they offered me coffee, which was nice. I noticed that there was only one other customer, not a good sign. There were a couple of staff members, a random person doing what it seems to be like homework (?!!) at one of the hair dresser's station and a man seating next to me chatting obnoxiously with everyone in the room. At first I thought he was a customer, then I thought he was waiting for someone. I think he was either the landlord or the maintenance guy as he was talking about removing the trash for next week. No matter who he was, he definitely did not help the place looking more professional. At some point I grabbed a magazine and faked reading so he would stop talking to me and let me alone. There were no hair products or scissors or anything "hair cutting" related anywhere. It's then that I realized that they specialize in hair extensions. I got stressed out a little: can they actually cut hair? I realized it was 15 minutes passed my appointment time. Not sure why because the staff is not busy at all but casually chatting among each other. Finally someone came to let me know they were ready to give me a shampoo. The person that washed my hair spent the whole time trying to sell me the product she was using, what a turn off! She introduced me to the person that would cut my hair. He looked like he did not even want to be there, looking bored and barely lifting his feet when walking. At this point I got scared of what they would do to my hair, the whole experience so far was just so unprofessional, I just wanted to run away but it was too late. I was going there with an open mind and the intention of having a big hair change but after seeing the lack of professionalism (how could a really good hair dresser want to work there anyway?) I decided I would just ask for a trim. It took him between 5 and 10 minutes to cut my hair; I have never seen someone giving a haircut is such a small amount of time. He cut the tip of my hair about of an inch, did a couple of layers and that's it. He did not even touch the front or trimmed or offered to trim my bang. Also, the whole time of the haircut, my seat was turned in a way that I had to stare at the girl that was doing her homework, which was pretty awkward. After the speedy haircut came the time for styling. I asked to have some curls, which he did. I honestly could have done a better job myself. He did not use any spray or hair product whatsoever. I also pointed out that the way he curled the bang was crooked, he said he could not see it. So I said thank you and left. This experience, according to the Dealfind coupon I got, was supposed to be a $100 value, which is totally ridiculous. For $15, I have had better haircut experiences at Wal-Mart, no joking. This was definitely my worst experience at a hair salon and I will not go back. The purpose of offering Dealfind coupons (or Living Social, Groupon,...) for a business is to make people discover a service by offering it at a discount. The goal is to blow them away so they come back, become regular and pay the full price, not making quick money by selling tons of coupons and then botching the job. Not only I will never go back to Salon Monet but I will also make sure to tell as many people as I can about how bad they are. Salon Monet and Spa is unprofessional, please do not go there. read more
