Let me start by saying, i'm reviewing my stylist, not the salon. The salon was beautiful, the other stylists as well as mine were friendly, and the sinks were comfy. Robby gave me easily the worst haircut I've ever received. I walked in with about 3 inches of hair, and had a picture of a mia wasikowska's new pixie. He cut my hair for nearly an hour and fifteen minutes. And when all was said and done, i had a little less than 1/2 inch on the sides and back and about 1.5 inches on my bangs. The sides are horrendous- uneven and sticking out in odd places, and he emphasized my cowlick like nobodies business. It should not have taken that long to cut my hair- it's 3 inches of hair for god's sakes! The color took about 20 minutes. But all was not done, he then charged me 144 (with 15% discount) for a cut and color. I came in with less hair than most guys and he charged me for a full price woman's haircut and color. I will be driving to my old stylist, and am sad to not try the other great stylists at this salon(according to yelpers). It is unfortunate they would let someone with so little skill in female short haircuts work in such a nice salon. read more

The Asian dude cut my hair and while he's a friendly chap, the cut looked exactly like what I do myself. I'm a pretty talented self-stylist but like, when I go to the salon, I expect magic. For the prices, everyone should. It is comical to me this is a "best in Downtown" joint. Further proof that means absolutely nothing. Receptionist was an airhead, too. Shoulda known! I haven't been to this salon but a friend of mine has. She is African-American and Sirene styles her hair. Apparently she flat-irons it and I can vouch for the fact that it looks GREAT! It has body and shine and it goes pretty quick. My friend says she charges her about $55. But of course, stylists set their prices for multiple reasons so it doesn't mean she will give you that rate. But your hair will look great either way...based on what I saw, I recommend her! read more

I've been seeing Judy for haircuts since high school! (which is a pretty long time ago) Even though I live in NYC , whenever I go back home to LA I always make sure to book a haircut with her. She gives the best haircuts, even when it's grown out it still looks great! She always styled my hair so that it would match my face, and my style, and the texture of my hair, and always listened to any input I had. I've followed Sirene Evans to whatever Salon she works at and beyond. As a model it's a bit of a pain to have my hair back combed, straightened, curled, frizzed, crimped, tugged, even hacked at with razors! So needless to say I love knowing I can trust Sirene to restore the life in my hair with very little input on my part. I have very full, blunt bangs and have had trouble in the past finding someone who'll take the time to cut them STRAIGHT without thinning them. Sirene has the patience of a saint. She'll even stop me in the street if she spots anything out of place and demand I let her fix it! Not only is she talented as a colorist and stylist but I've even worked with her on Photo Shoots, Video Shoots and she's styled my hair for events. There's nothing this woman cannot do with hair! I love her! I totally recommend that everyone should go to whatever Salon she has a booth in. She raises the standards impeccably! oh! And don't expect to park on the street at Salon Pure. I give salon pure 5 stars becaues I have never gotten such a great haircut in the US by anyone ever. Scott is the best! He does exactly what I ask, (and you know that is hard in hair-dressers sometimes). He is not only creative and helpful with suggestions if you need them, but he is the necest guy. I came in as a walk in and by luck they were able to fit me in. It was nice, clean, and everyone was very friendly. The girl took me to the back to shampoo my hair, which was great. It was relaxing and it felt really good. With that said, my hair cut left some to be desired for. I asked for suggestions on my hair cut and I suggested maybe some layers. I figured they are professionals they can help. She just trimmed the ends of my hair and spent the rest of the time blow drying it. It looked ok, I guess. I accomplished nothing and for what I got, it was kind of pricey. They were really nice. read more

I LOVE SCOTT!! He gave me probably one of the best haircuts I've ever had and he made my first experience with him amazing! He went through everything he was doing, not leaving me to any chance of worry. I even loved the way he had me stand up for a minute as he sat in the chair to cut my hair lol Scott also explained everything that was possible with my hair and gave me some great advice. After reading the reviews, I went to Scott because I really wanted someone who would listen but he really didn't. I was up front about the fact that several of my needs were somewhat conflicting and I could understand that there would be some compromises but there were a few points that I was very clear about. I wanted a style that fit my face (long and narrow) and was edgy without being trendy. He suggested growing out my bangs (which he insisted on calling fringe in such a way that it suggested that I was annoying him by saying bangs) and sweeping them to the side which I see is definitely the trend at the moment. I was also very clear that I NEVER style my hair yet he kept giving me pointers about using a curling iron and despite saying that my bangs shouldn't be any shorter, just a bit of choppiness added, my bangs were cut so short that they curled up to my hairline if I didn't straighten them. Basically we just have very different aesthetics but I definitely didn't feel heard. read more

GREAT SCOTT! as Doc Brown would say! My first time I came in was with Chandra, she did cut, and highlights, purely amazing. Months later it was time for a trim and Chandra was not there so I requested Scott thanks to yelp reviews. Scott is my go to stylist from now on. It really does get no better than Judy and this lovely little salon. I saw Judy for the first time this week and instantly knew I would be coming to see her every time here on out. I've been waiting for the perfect stylist for a while, and she really is it. She gave me some really amazing ombre colouring, and her bang trim was amazing, she went a head and went to town on all my front layers. Plus, she gives THE BEST head massages. It may sound trite, but believe, they are worth every penny. Afterwards, she practices like half a dozen hair styles on me and showed me what to do with my hair. Salon pure has become my go-to hair salon. Scott is pretty great. I could go anywhere for my hair. Beverly Hills, Pasadena, or the WestSide... but I wanted to find a great spot downtown and contribute to the community. Here I am thinking I'll support a local business and the community will thrive. Little did I know, I would be the one thriving after my hair cuts and dyes. Scott not only does a great job on my hair but he has suggestions on local businesses and restaurants. Being a DTLA newbie, I had no idea which restaurants or bars were the "go to" spots. I didn't expect to leave the salon with great hair AND more knowledge of the area. As far as my latest dye job... I couldn't be happier. Sometimes when I go to Salons and ask them to dye my hair BLACK they say "No, it's sooo harsh" and talk me out of it. Not at Salon Pure. Thank Goodness! This salon is across my favorite roast beef restaurant and decided to make an appointment. I'm sure glad I did, the salon is clean, spacious enough, with great lighting. Parking is not the easiest but it is LA so it's no different from the rest. When you come in for your appointment they always ask you if you want some tea, water, or coffee. They also take walk-ins. Staff is very friendly and professional. I made my appointment with Judy. The girl is sweet, sweet, sweet, a cute gem, not to mention she knows what she is doing!! What I enjoy the most is she gives good advice on how to take care of your hair and how to style your new do. If you even ask her, she'll tell you the chemical breakdown of how the dye works and what dye should be used with your current hair state. My favorite part is when she's shampooing my hair and gives my scalp an incredibly amazing massage!!!! I could be in mid conversation with her and as soon as the massage starts I'm like putty in her hands. Like most Salons in LA you can feel rushed, well not here, and not with Judy. I look forward to our appointments, she can make you feel like you've known her all your life, very welcoming, like your just catching up on lost time. I'm always pleased with my hair and she's on point on what the current trends are. She even admitted to me that she'll watch some shows on mute not get caught up in the story but just to check out the hair and the cuts. I recommended my roommate to do her hair with an ombre style using purple, and of course, that was no challenge for Judy, roommate came home with amazing hair. Best. Salon. Ever. I have horrible hair so it's really hard to make it look any worse. That being said they always somehow manage to take an hour for every haircut. i don't know if that produces any extraordinary result but it definitely makes me feel like I'm getting my money's worth! The reason I like this place so much is the atmosphere. There really isn't any other way to say it. Every single hair dresser is just.... so cool. When you are little and watch TV shows of LA and see all the crazy people with blue hair, tons of tattoos, and chains hanging from all their clothes, they probably work at this salon. They all have awesome stories and are fun to talk to. It makes this tiny hole-in-the-wall salon very welcoming and private. Scott is the BEST. I've been getting my hair cut by him for nearly three years now, and I totally trust him to make my hair look great every time. Ever since Scott started styling my hair, I consistently get compliments on it. I have thick, wavy hair that is prone to frizz and lop-sidedness if in the wrong hands. I thought I was asking for the impossible when i said i wanted my hair to look good straight, but also when it gets wavy (such as when it gets damp). The first time I saw Scott, he spent more than an hour cutting intricate layers and I now know he was laying the foundation for a great cut (I'm in and out in less than an hour now). I require a super-low maintenance hairstyle that also looks stylish (this is LA) and professional (for my corporate job). It now takes me about three minutes to dry my hair and with or without product, it always looks great. Scott asks good questions and listens well. "Great hairstylists are hard to come by" I recently visited Salon Pure and I have to say I was very impressed. I've had a difficult time finding a salon that can accommodate thick long curly African American hair. I hate to say it but, I don't have half a day to spend at a "black" salon. My hairstylist was Sakina and she is now my new best friend. She was friendly professional and my hair came out amazing in record time. I first went into Salon Pure after having dyed my bleached out hair deep blue and being told by my place of employment that it needed to change. Located in my (at the time) building, I made an appointment and met one of the best stylists in the world, Judy. Judy has the rare touch of being able to do good hair and talk at the same time. LOVED this place! It's so clean and cute and the staff are extremely personable. They also played amazing music the entire time I was there(about 4 hours). Cara is amazing hair dresser. She changed my color from bleached out blond with 2 inches of dark roots to a pretty darker blonde color. I came in extremely nervous to get my hair done since I had been doing it myself for 2 1/2 years after some scarring salon experiences leaving my hair extremely dry and damaged. Cara was so sweet and nice and helped me feel comfortable enough to get it cut. She gave me so much good advice about taking care of my hair! I showed her a picture of blake lively's hair from the season finally of gossip girl because I really liked the color. It turned out darker than I expected but after washing it once it is now the perfect color I wanted! I'm very happy with it, every time I look in the mirror I hardly recognize myself, but in a good way. (: I would give this place 5 stars but I was really surprised when my bill turned out to be a little less than $300 with 15% off and 50% off haircut. If you're getting a lot done prepared to put down some big bucks, but I think it's totally worth it. Also bring cash with you to tip, they don't accept tips on credit, I wish they would have because I only had $20 on me and would have given her 30 or 40. This salon is absolutely amazing. I went for a cut & color for my first time by Scott. The haircut is definitely the best I have ever had without a doubt and the color is flawless. I just gave him a rough idea -- I'm a guy with medium length normal "emo hair" (side-swept bangs etc.). I always had it with lots of layers, etc. All I told him was that I wanted about the same length and style. Looking at my hair he made a ton of suggestions right off the bat, all of which were things I (of course) would never have thought of! He showed me what products he was using (which were definitely better for my hair than anything I've tried) and it was just overall hair-awesomeness. The cut is phenomenal to me. I thought I had my hair cut well before, what with layers, etc. This is freaking ART. Seriously, it's amazing. Is it possible to give extra stars? I just finished writing a review about Rudy's, after having a horrible experience there in early March. It was a bit traumatizing (okay not earth-shattering, it IS just hair) and I haven't done anything to my hair since then. It was getting pretty uggo. I tried my hand again on here and found Salon Pure. Conveniently located a block and few steps away from where I live, I called beforehand and they put me down for 2 hours later. They were polite and accommodating. I walked in and met Scott, who dealt with my hair today. He was very nice, offered me an iPad and a glass of H2O. We talked a bit and he gave me feedback (such an important aspect). I was taken aback by how he REALLY listened and paid attention to my needs/wants and concerns. After a shampoo and dry, he cut away. Def one of the best haircuts I've ever had. He was friendly and didn't make awkward conversation, but at the same time, kept a level of open-ness if I needed to make comments, etc. Overall, great ambiance, love the stylists that were there and I felt pretty afterwards. After salon-hopping around DTLA, I've finally found someone who gets my thick, curly unruly hair. Thanks to my fellow Yelpers, I made an appointment with Cara and she was awesomeee. When I got there, Cara was running a few minutes behind, but Erika, the salon owner, came by and made sure I was totally comfortable. Despite that she was running behind, Cara was totally calm and really took her time on me which I totally appreciated. My hair feels so much lighter and all the dead ends are gone without sacrificing too much length. Total bonus- they give you 15% off if you are a first time client. I've been wanting to find a hair salon near work for quite some time now, since I've been lazy about battling traffic to go to my usual place in Pasadena. I stumbled upon the reviews of Salon Pure and the ratings got me interested. After reading many of the reviews, I decided to book an appointment with Scott since people seem to be raving about him. The online booking process was easy to use and I got my appointment with him the next day. Well, I can see why people rave about him. He was great. He's personable and had a lot of good suggestions to give. He listened to my concerns and answered my questions. He advised on what we should do to clean up my long fine hair. I told him it takes me a long time to grow my hair this long so I want to keep growing it out, but since my hair is super fine, I would like to add some volume to it so it doesn't look lifeless. He knew exactly what to do, and did exactly what he said he would, which was to clean up the ends, cut some nice layers to make it bouncier but kept the length so I could keep growing it out. I was very happy with the end result. His price was also very reasonable for such quality service I received. I will for sure return when my hair needs another magic touch. read more

2 month update --- I really, REALLY wanted to love the highlights...but 1 month afterward, the highlights faded to oblivion. I didn't realize how much they had faded until one of my close friends who hadn't seen me in a while commented on my need to redye my hair the moment she saw me. Yeah....it got pretty ugly. I don't really understand how it could fade so fast...and after paying so much for it, I would've expected it to last a lot, lot longer. Sigh =( --------------------------- I felt compelled to write this review while I still have a fresh memory of today's hair cut + full highlight service. I wanted to dye my asian dark brown hair (never been dyed) to an ash brown. Wasn't sure if I wanted highlights or all over color, but Chandra recommended doing highlights because it blends into the hair more naturally as it grows out. I was amazed at how meticulous she was during the foiling process, and the results show because the highlights look phenomenal. The whole tinting process probably took 2-3 hours because I have thick wavy hair, a little past my shoulders. She lifted the color, then toned it at the sink. She was very attentive to detail, and the ash brown that she chose was perfect for my skin tone. Afterwards, she cut my hair and taught me how to style it wavy using just my fingers, product, and a blow dryer. Amazing. I've never walked out of a salon feeling that good about my hair! I believe they use Goldwell products for their hairdye. The total came out to $260 for haircut and full highlights; thats after the 15% newbie discount. If it wasn't for the price, I would've rated this 5 stars. Yet, I'm definitely hooked and will be coming back for more =) Parking: I was concerned about parking before I came here because I'm new to LA, so here are a few tips for people like me. You can pretty much find lot parking on every other street nearby. The cheapest one I saw was on Los Angeles St and 7th - $4 parking flat fee. On Main St and 7th, there is a $5 flat fee parking. On Main and 4th St, there is another $5 flat fee parking. On 6th and Main, there is a 2 hr free parking with a car wash for $15. Like I said...there are many parking lots around =) read more

Two hair cuts mine and my girl. Lisa was great with me, Judy was horrible with my girl. Her hair looks untouched and poorly colored. The cut is not as she asked and Judy's demeanor was negetive towards her past hair cut which she loved, and put her down for her hair and was noticeably rude. She did not listen to any directions on how it was to be cut. So in summery, My man's cut was decent, but for an expensive woman's cut and color my experience was very negative. CARA: the most amazingly talented and unassuming stylist I have yet to sit with in LA!!!!! Its a small world afterall; I met her through a very close friend from my midwest roots..and although Cara and I first met without business, I ended up hiring her to travel to Pebble Beach to do hair/makeup for my bridal party. She seriously impressed me, working under pressure and knocking it out of the park---we looked phenomenal! So I came up from Newport Beach to get a cut and color, and I have got to say....her work was awesome and should make even the creative director at Vidal Sasson BH blush. I have a short bob style which requires special hands, and without having to over explain anything, I walked out with the most quality cut I've ever had in LA. She has got a client for LIFE and I would recommend her to anyone who wants perfection. Yeah, so I just called to see how much an estimate would be to cut my hair: about 4, 5 inches in length, wanted an inch, inch and a half cut, so basically just your old-fashioned scissor trim. "Alright, well it'll be about $50, but for your first visit it'll be $46." Uhm... no thanks. I guess it's cuz I'm used to getting pretty sweet cuts and trims for about $10-$12 from this stylist down Adams Blvd & Harcourt (Mid-City). Unfortunately, she's not open on Mondays and this is my only day off in the week (working six days a week sucks nads), so I guess my search continues... But yeah, $46? For a men's trim? Amy is the only hairstylist who hasn't made me cry after my haircut...she is amazing! I recently was injured and hospitalized and couldn't do anything with my hair, i had spent years growing it out and after my surgery and inability to even brush my hair I went to Amy and said cut it off and not only did she give me a great cut, she made me feel stylish and cute again! I've been going to this salon for over 3 years now. Chandra usually cuts my hair, but sometimes she isn't available. When that happens I just get it cut by another stylist. Everyone who works there is an awesome stylist, so I don't question their abilities. I've loved every haircut I've ever had at Salon Pure. My only complaint, which can be a big deal to some people, is that the prices can be expensive. I have no idea why, but I've paid between $70 and $120 for a haircut, so i don't always know what I will be paying. I have long hair, so I know that can raise the price, but a little bit of regularity would be good. read more

I made an appointment based on the reviews here and am very pleased with the results! I went in for a full color (I had severely faded ends) and Chelsea worked quickly and efficiently. I didn't elaborate too much on the color I wanted but she made a great choice and it turned out to be exactly what I wanted. Total was still in the double digits with the first timer discount.
