A little more than I am used to, but it had been a while since I had gotten my hair done, so not pressed. I am happy that April was able to get me in and out by 3:15 which was great as I had an event to go to and needed to be on time. Went to this salon because it was close to my work and had positive reviews, plus I really liked April's boutique next door. But after my horrendous experience at Head Trip, I will no longer be giving my business to either. First off, I booked my appointment two weeks in advance for a simple haircut. When I got to my appointment ten minutes early no one greeted me in the salon, which was awkward because I was the only guest waiting. After about 30 minutes of waiting and almost walking out, April finally greets me and calls me over to begin my hair. After washing me hair, another client walks in. Apparently April double booked her appointments. She sits me under the drier for 45 minutes while she completely does another person's style. After pulling me from the dryer, she sits me at her booth and begins to rewet my hair..... and like clock-work, another client walks in. She asks me to wait while she washes the clients hair. She triple booked my appointment time! All I wanted was a trim and April ended up giving me the $175 deva cut!! I did not ask for that and ended up leaving the salon with wet hair. You would think for $175, you would at least get a blow dry. Worst and most unprofessional juggling act I have ever seen. read more

Tamieko has been styling my hair for the past year and she is absolutely amazing. Her crotchet styles have seriously made rocking natural hair quick and easy! I used to sit anywhere from 9-12 hours on twists but now her crotchet styles (like twists and locs) only takes about 1.5-2 hours. And her braiding is clinical!! They last for a long time and her parting is very neat. Besides being a great hair technician she is also a great listener. located in the pasadena antique district, this little boutique seems warm and inviting amid bronze vases and figurines. seems is the word. the minute i walked in everyone snapped their heads in my direction with a glare in their eyes. WTF. i had chosen this salon because of its close location to my work and the fact that they have experience with ethnic hair (read: curly as hell). so why is everyone looking at me like im a millionaire shopping at walmart? all i said was "I'm black too you know! stop looking at me like my money isnt good here!"... but that was just internal dialogue. how does someone get past an underlying prejudice like that without making a scene? you cant. so i just waited for my stylist to be ready for my consultation. i needed a color correction after completely messing up doing it myself. so i asked some questions about the process and cost. she suggested that i dont use bleach for the health of my hair, which i agreed with. but the rest of the conversation sounded like "its whatever you wanna do" and "its possible that can happen". no guarantees or solid advice. i was slightly hesitant, but i was desperate to get my hair fixed. it took 8 hours, on two separate days, with a week in between processes to finish... and i ended up disappointed after the first wash at home. i thought that if i was patient thru all the time that it took it would turn out effing fabulous, and it didnt. i mean, my stylist was a beautiful lady inside and out, but to pay $150 for a correction and have my hair not-corrected is unbearable. i didnt even want to spend more time (and possibly money) to get it re-fixed at the same place. not only is that embarrassing to the stylist, its a waste of time for me. so maybe their specialty isnt color... it seemed like it was hair weaving and pressing. if i actually needed any of that done i'd probably walk out a gorgeous new me, but i didnt. and my pockets felt empty. read more

I have been a loyal customer of Head Trip and April's for over 20 years. I am not one of those African American women who believe in going to the salon every week. I actually wash my hair at home and do most of my hair care at home. I have had several services at Aprils. I used to get relaxers for years. Then I decided to grow out my relaxer by using a weave. We weaved my hair for 30 months and the plan was to get a Japanese straightener. During that time, April found a better product for my hair and I have been using Brazilian blowouts since. My hair is healthier than it has been in years. It's the longest it has been too. Throughout the years, April has always counseled my on the correct products to use, the right utensils to use styling and maintaining my hair. I am active. I like to swim, surf and doing all sorts of things. To some women of color, this is not typical. However, April has gone through it all with me. How to maintain my hair after swimming, after being in the ocean, after big sweaty workouts. And, yet, I still I have healthy hair. I owe that to April. April also always strives to continue her education in cosmetology. She maintains classes on cutting hair, using new products and up to the minute trends in hair care. It's very rare that she does not know a product on the market and if she does not, she will seek it out and use it, then tell you if it's good for your hair. April works fast. If you are African American and you've spent hours in a salon. April has an assistant and depending on the processes you are having done on your hair, you will get out in record time. Of course, April does all the cutting, styling and major hair items. I love going to April because it's like going home. I love all the stylists in the shop and their customers. Since it's a largely African American clientele, the age range spans from young girls to women who are senior citizens. Oh the dialog that happens in that salon! We cover everything from politics to fashion ,music, relationships, finances, current events or just cool restaurants. I am not an amateur critic like Tasha H and I have not written over 200 reviews on Yelp to feed my ego. I am, however, probably one of the most discerning and critical customers of services out there. And, The Head Trip Salon is a mecca of knowledge, beauty and perfected hair services for women of color and women with kinky hair. I have to agree with all tht Dana has said. I've been going to Head Trip since 1998 and really appreciate the service that April provides. She and all of the ladies in her salon are professionals. I appreciate how timely April is and how beautiful my hair looks after I leave. I've tried several shops in the past where I've left wondering if anything special was done to my hair. At Head Trip, the ladies truly style your hair. Traditionally, I've had a relaxer in my hair and a length that was just beyond my ears. I wanted to grow out my hair and April suggested I try a weave. We chose one that was just past my shoulders in length which was a big step for me (but that is another story all together). I also get colored cellophanes. April is excellent in consulting with you to see what the best options are for your hair goals. After having it in for one year, I opted to take it out and see now that my hair grown over 5" in that timeframe. April pressed it and it has grown so much so that when I went home, my family did not even notice that it was my own hair. They thought I still had the weave!!!! Thank you April! We are now on the road of continued health and care for my new locks. I also combine home care with her salon care. I've tried other stylist that are closer to my home but I keep coming back( from Corona) to April because of her knowledge, skills, professionalism and care. April, the owner of Head Trip, has been doing my hair for over 3 years. She is the best stylist that I have ever had, as she has made my hair grow. I get a press, but I have also had weaves by April. Her weaves are VERY natural looking and, more importantly, she does not braid or sew your hair tightly so the weaves are not uncomfortable. Perhaps the best part about her service is that it is fast without compromising quality (including a great conditioning with every service). I am always in and out in 2 hours (3 hours if getting a weave - yes, only 3 hours!). Her salon also has a wonderful boutique with beautiful clothes, scarves, and jewelry.
