I am in a wheelchair and I was discriminated against at Salon Sophia. 99% of the time people are so incredibly kind to me. I don't expect anything from anybody, but most people will go out of their way to ask me if I need something , if I can get the door for you etc. It makes me feel good and I think it makes people feel good as well. Just being kind. I moved here from out of state and was looking for a place to get my hair done, so I thought I'd try salon Sophia. I should've known what was in store for me the minute I entered the salon, I could feel their uncomfortableness with me being there. The guy behind the desk barely acknowledged me. When it was time to wash my hair, I stayed in my wheelchair and leaned my head over the sink, which I've done many a time at other salons. It usually takes me a little bit of time to get my chair in the right position until I get used to their sink. I thought I did a pretty good job. My leg fell off my wheelchair platform which happens sometimes. My service dog actually can lift my leg back on, but he wasn't with me that day. So I needed help getting my leg back on which requires lifting it about 2 inches onto that foot platform. I asked if they wouldn't mind please helping me get my foot back on. They seemed uncomfortable with my request. The man behind the desk did come over and lift my foot back on, but he wouldn't even look at me and interact with me. They made me feel like it was a real inconvenience to help me and their behavior towards me was disheartening. People are usually so nice and willing to help with something so small, I was really taken aback. Anyways, I liked how she did my hair so I thought I'd go back. And the third time I was met at the door with them demanding that I have somebody stay and help me. It was a different man behind the desk this time. He was intimidating and aggressive, yelling that I needed help and I kept asking what kind of help did he want me to have and he wouldn't answer the question. It's too bad because I liked how she did my hair, I kind of felt bad for them because every time I go there, there is nobody in the salon but me so I thought I'd give them my business. In Salon Sophia's response below they wrote that they had to lift me into my chair and it's not their responsibility. First of all, they never lifted me into my chair. I never left the chair so that is inaccurate. Secondly, yes, it's not their responsibility to help me, nor did I request them to help me. But how about just being a nice person. There was nobody else in the salon except for Maggie and that man. read more
