I was nervous going to get a haircut because I haven't been really satisfied with my last few. When I arrived, Jessica immediately explained how the DevaCurl process was going to work! I showed her a few pictures for inspiration and she was excited to start. The whole process was very relaxing and stress-free considering I was a bit worried to chop my hair off. I was informed of how to take care of my curls and what products to use at home. I absolutely LOVE my new haircut and recommend that everyone with curly hair - ethnic or not - goes to New Creations! Tavia is just wonderful. Super sweet woman and did a really good job on my hair. I came here specifically for a Japanese hair straightening and it was worth the 3+ hour drive. All the women here are super sweet. Not to mention the entire place is just very classy and has a good vibe to it. Japanese straightening takes hours and is hard to find someone to do it. I called the day before and they had an opening the next day for me. Very accommodating. I'll come back again. This place is known for curly hair, not just straightening - so for all my fellow curly hair girls out there, this would be a good go too. Also I learned that you aren't suppose to put your hair in a ponytail in the same spot every day. Change it up - that's how you get bald spots. I didn't really want to write this review, but I feel a bit like I owe it to people who might be looking for a salon in the area. I had a wax here two or so weeks ago. The place was walking distance from my bf's and had great reviews on citysearch, so why not? I got there 15 minutes early...unfortunately, they were running an hour behind schedule. I wrote it off to it being near Thanksgiving and hectic. She was really nice...however, less than two weeks and I've got a lot of regrowth where there shouldn't be any this soon- I've had waxes before, so I know what's typical and what isn't. I also noticed one other thing that I didn't really think about until later...she reuses the same wooden spatula in the same pot of wax over and over. I looked closer at the citysearch reviews- a bunch of glowing ones that sound the same, and a couple of 1-star ones with people complaining of hour-long waits. You can read between the lines. They must be padding their reviews on other websites. I'm canceling my next appointment...I'm not interested in patronizing a place that's so unprofessional that they feel the need to plant reviews about themselves. read more

Tavia was da bomb! She was fun & personable, as well as having some serious stylist chops. This is a salon that specializes in curly hair; specifically, the DevaCurl method. Wavy, kinky, spirally hair is its own unique challenge -- you curly girls know what I'm sayin' -- the stylists here will be happy to educate you on ways to help tame the mop & fight the frizz. I am happy with my hair for the first time in a loooong while. The standard service is a dry cut & a cleanse/moisturizing treatment. They also offer some other salon services (brows, mani/pedi) but I haven't been here for that. I expected a fairly aggressive upsell on products (since it's always that way when you switch to a new method,) but surprisingly, the product sell was pretty low-key. Tavia suggested the one thing I really ought to have, and some other things that I might want to think about next time, which seemed considerate of my wallet. The cut itself was priced fairly, $42 at this writing, which is in line for the type of service & the area. Parking is a hassle, but they said you can park in the liquor store lot across the street. I've really been debating about writing this review. I've gotten my hair cut here a couple of times and was quite happy with my last haircut. I called post-COVID to make an appointment and discovered the salon is now under new management. I decided to go ahead and try one of the new stylists and made an appointment for a Devacut. The new manager and stylist were perfectly friendly, and I have absolutely no personality qualms with them. However, it became pretty clear as the haircut went on that the stylist really didn't know what he was doing, had never done an actual Devacut, was only familiar with the method, etc. I've been getting Devacuts for the last nine years, so I'm pretty familiar with the process. When he first asked me what I had in mind when I got there, he didn't remember that I originally made an appointment for a Devacut - that set off immediate red flags. Usually Devacut stylists are specific because they've had the training, and I began to doubt he was actually one of them. After he finished dry cutting my hair (the usual first part of a Devacut), he asked if I wanted to shampoo/dry it. That was another red flag - Deva stylists, again, know the process which involves dry cut, shampoo/condition with Deva products, and then diffuse/air dry. I chose the shampoo/dry to see how he would perform the rest of the process to confirm my doubts. I'm fairly certain he used the Deva shampoo because it smelled the same, but I didn't recognize the conditioner he used and I'm fairly certain there's only one conditioner. (I absolutely could be wrong on this) I told him I typically use the Arc Angel gel, and instead of flipping my head over, scrunching it in while it was soaking wet, and drying it with the "special towel," he just kind of rubbed it/scrunched it in my hair while I was still lying on the hair washing chair. Then he had me stand up and walk back over to diffuse without squeezing out the extra liquid with the towel like I mentioned. He had me part my own hair and proceeded to diffuse it with me sitting straight up for about 5-10 minutes. I never mind air-drying and by this point was ready to just leave, so I was fine leaving the salon with it pretty wet (which it was). The only reason I mention such detail is to simply make the point that I have strong doubts that this stylist actually knew how to do a Devacut. I also never saw the Deva stylist certificate by his styling chair that I've seen with all other stylists in the past. As I mentioned, I debated about writing this because I don't want to take work away from people with a bad review after the previous months of no work. This stylist may be perfectly capable of and awesome at cutting other hair! My haircut isn't *horrible* - just a lot shorter than I wanted and maybe a little uneven (I'm still trying to assess the situation). I was just pretty upset that he seemed to pretend to be proficient in the Devacut method. If the salon had been honest about which new stylists are/aren't experienced in the Devacut method, I absolutely would have still gone there. Perhaps it's unfair of me, but I didn't express any disappointment or frustration with my haircut at the time - I wasn't really sure how to tell the stylist I suspected he didn't know what he was doing, especially since the haircut was well under way by the time I was pretty confident. I hope they can forgive me for not speaking out at the time. The last thing I'll mention is that the salon only takes cash or Venmo currently. I didn't find that out until after my haircut. I understand it's new management and they're still probably trying to get their feet on the ground, but this would be a nice detail to tell customers when they make the appointment so they can prepare in advance. read more

I was really excited about the idea of curly hair experts - and the gal I got (Jen) did a decent job with my haircut. The color on the other hand is HORRIBLE! I went in asking for a root touch up to cover a couple grays and wanted an all over tone to neutralize the red tone in my medium chocolate brown hair. I was VERY clear that I did not want to go darker - just to neutralize the red tone. I explained I'd just 8 weeks before had a color correction to lift the color - because it had been too dark, and that I really didn't want to undo all of that work (and expense!). She seemed to understand, and brought out several swatches - we chose a medium neutral brown color and got busy. Well - my hair is now black. BLACK! It's so so dark - WAY darker than I wanted. And when I told her repeatedly that it was too dark, and not what I asked for - she just had excuses. "Oh - it'll fade, don't worry". "Try washing it a lot". "well you have to go darker to cover the red." Are you kidding me? What a disaster. She obviously had no idea how to treat hair that had been previously color corrected - and had no idea what the result would be. I am so disappointed - I don't think my hair can handle another color correction so soon - I may have to just walk around looking like a goth. :( I have a call in to the owner to see what she'll do to resolve this - I will update this review with her response. ---- UPDATE ------ The owner asked me to come back in to see what they could do to fix my hair. Saturday, I went to this salon and had 4 inches of my hair cut. Mind you only my dead ends were supposed to be trimmed and cut off. My appointment was at 10:00 am. She was currently working on coloring two other ladies hair. She stopped them and started on me while their color sat. I was out of there by 10:15ish am. I came pre washed and dried. Skylar assured me my hair would be even and cut all the same. Before leaving I mentioned how my hair looked uneven. She stated it was the way my shoulders were that moment. I have attatched a photo of my cut. As I'm on Facebook I see that the SAME two women who were there that morning made a post about how terrible their hair coloring and cuts were. The stylists refused to refund the money without extra fees. Mind you, I reached out today to the salon. I had already decided I wouldn't go back and was terrified to allow them to cut more of my hair. I told them I'd be going elsewhere. There responses were that two other stylists would fix my hair free of charge or I was welcome to go pay full price at another salon for my hair to be fixed. I already paid $50 + $5 tip. For literally less than 10 minutes. When I asked for my hair to be straightened Skylar wasn't eager to do so. I am over this salon. Beware!!! read more

The best color and cut I've ever received. She was friendly and informative and really passionate about her work. I left happy with my hair and happy in my heart. She is a true artist and I'm thrilled to have found her. I fully trust her with my hair and highly recommend her. She also cut my husbands hair and it's the best cut he's ever had. They specialize in curly hair here! You start off getting a dry cut, then a condition and styling. Totally comparable pricing to other salons. I had Lindsey who was personable, but more importantly an excellent stylist. My hair looks great! I got some subtle low-lights in funky colors put in here a few months ago, too. Again, reasonable price, lasted three months or so. Only complaints are it's tricky parking, and a little lonely when they leave you to dry/process etc. No big deal, really. Could not ask for a better salon experience. They are the most warm and genuine people and you always feel welcome when you are there. I honestly stumbled upon the salon out of pure luck when I moved back to KC. I was wearing my hair straight at the time and they are known for their curly Deva cuts. I was honestly so confused by my curls at the time and had no clue how to care for them, let alone how to wear them. It had really been a struggle my whole life, so I always just straightened them. The crew at New Creations are so amazing and patient! They taught me how to care for, style, and love my curls. I love letting my curls shine now! It is just so nice to be comfortable with yourself and I could never have gotten there without New Creations. But I use their salon for more than just hair cuts.....color, waxing, and having them style my hair for a special occasion. I have always walked away more than happy with their work. My first experience at the Salon was with Tavia and I really liked it. I went back the second time and got a different stylist and she has no idea how to do my hair and the salon owner charged me extra because it took her so long. I called back to speak to Tavia to ask her why it was cheaper when she did it and overheard a conversation about them overcharging me.
