I recently got married and my fiancé and I had our wedding party come in for a manicure and pedicure party. We also came in to get our hair and makeup done the day of our wedding. I knew from the time I got engaged that I wanted us all to come into Salon Spa W!!! We worked with The bridal specialist Alex to get all of our appointments booked. We had the majority of our party coming in from out of state so it was a lot of logistics to handle. Alex made it so easy for us to just show up, relax and enjoy our day!!! To start off our day we relaxed in the lounge with mimosas and pastries from the local bakery across the street. Next, my wife and I had hair done by Lance and makeup done by Jackie. We felt and looked like the beautiful brides we were!!! I felt like our whole wedding party took over Salon Spa W. They were so accommodating and made us feel like princesses on our wedding day. Our photographer took amazing photos of us in the space and the salon was such an artistic and beautiful backdrop. I was in dire need of a haircut after moving to Des Moines and my fellow Yelpers suggested Salon Spa W. I made my appointment online and received a call the following morning to confirm an appointment. The day of, they sent me a text message reminder! When I arrived, it was busy with plenty of people getting their hair done and a group of women having a party with white wine and appetizers. Despite how busy it was, Joey was able to attend to all customers while remaining calm, friendly, and professional. I filled out the form and questionnaire, and my S/O and I were offered either white wine, tea, lemon water, or cucumber water. Joey then took me on a tour around the whole salon! They offer other services besides just hair cut and color, such as massages, grooming, and manis/pedis! I really enjoyed all of the complimentary services that came with my hair cut. A hair cut comes with a complimentary scalp and neck massage, hair wash, hand massage and paraffin wax, and a makeup touch up at the end! I also enjoy how they have different specialists for cut and color, as you can trust that the individual is educated in their specialty! I was introduced to Amber, who is a colorist, and she gave me her card if I ever wanted to color my hair. The card was actually a $20 discount for when I book my first hair color appointment! I didn't get my hair colored this time, but it is something I may consider. Corbin was my stylist and I highly recommend her!! I went into this appointment not really sure of what cut to get (I knew I wanted it shorter, but past the shoulder), with side bangs and volume. She asked me questions such as what I wanted in terms of maintenance, how often I wash my hair, if I wanted my face shape to look slimmer or wider, etc. Then she showed me photos on an iPad and to point out anything I liked! She visualized a hair style on me and discussed it with me before cutting, which I really appreciated. Corbin taught me many tips to recreate my look, such as product suggestions to prevent damaged hair, boost volume, and provide "hold" for when I curl my hair. She also taught me how to properly blow dry and curl my hair to achieve that same look. I left looking and feeling glamorous, with hair that was super voluminous! I love that Salon Spa W stylists style your hair after your cut so you look and feel your best! I was the last person in the salon (the other employees were cleaning up), but I did not feel that my appointment was rushed at all! They messed up! Made two appointments for the same day, haircut and a facial, 2 PM and 5 PM, respectively. The haircut went well at 2, stylist was adept, talkative as probably trained to be and offered good styling suggestions. Didn't try too hard to sell "products", which is a big put-off for me. She even said that I could pay when I came back for the facial later. I spent more than two hours wandering around, which I didn't mind as I was new to the area. Showed up a few minutes before 5, was seated and soon after approached by a manager who told me that my appointment was at 4. When I sternly but politely told her that several of her staff members, including the one who made the appointment and the one who did my haircut, had told otherwise, she backed off from the strategy of trying to confuse me and "apologized for the miscommunication". Then she offered me an "abbreviated facial" which I declined because I didn't want to pay for a rushed service. After several more apologies, she offered me a 15% discount coupon. I paid for the haircut, added more than 15% tip in spite of the fiasco, and walked out in the cold of the Iowa evening. read more

I always have a hard time finding a new stylist when I move to a new city. It usually takes me a few tries and a few bad haircuts before I find someone I trust with my curly and wild hair. I got very lucky when I scheduled an appointment at Salon Spa W. The stylist was truly fantastic! She knew exactly how to cut and style my hair (i.e., she didn't try to blow dry or straighten it - which inevitably creates a frizz ,monster). I had a pedicure here & was extremely disappointed. The whole thing was very rushed and NOT relaxing. I was not even allowed to sit and let my nails dry, given they had a group waiting for the chairs. There are so few chairs to begin with, I'm surprised they even allow groups. If you sit in the bench seat, if moves every time the person sitting next to you moves. Very annoying. Also, you constantly have to move your purse, drink, etc to get in and out of your seat & to allow the other person in & out. It's not a very convenient set up. I was also extremely disappointed with the polish selection. It is a bunch of random, jumbled mess of old polish. Most of them barely have anything left in them in. The color selection is poor & honestly, they look like they should have been thrown away years ago. The spa person was telling the client next to me that they take polish donated from people!? That seems disgusting. The bathrooms are very dirty & gross. The only positive would be that the pedicure area is clean. read more

Love this place! Blakelee is just the best for color. I am blonde and it was impossible to find a colorist in Des Moines. She gets just the right blonde tone for my base color and highlights every time. Anna is awesome for cuts and updos. She goes out of her way to make sure everything is perfect. I flew in from out of town and had a super stressful flight. My skin felt super dry and puffy so I went straight in to get a facial to get back on track for the holidays. Abby was my Esthetician. She gave me such an amazing facial my skin felt completely renewed and hydrated. She was super informative yet I didn't feel like my relaxation was broken at all. Her massage was also incredible, she took away all the soreness from the long flight. OMG, I wish I could fly this girl home to New York with me. I've been here three times for blowouts while on business travel. The staff is incredibly nice, and appointments are on time. You have to make sure you tell the staff if you don't want a lot of product in your hair, FYI, if you are a person that doesn't like a lot of product. I had a formal event and my hair held up the entire night in the heat and humidity. But it required product and the blow out didn't last as long as I normally like. The stylist offered a treatment called olaplex to strengthen my hair and I tried it the last time I was in and love it! read more

Even after moving to Washington DC, I try to schedule my appointments around my visits home because Salon W is my favorite. Every appointment starts with a consultation followed by a scalp and shoulder massage. The colorists offer great advice and are always going to trainings and taking classes on new techniques. I've never left without loving my hair, whether it be for highlights, haircuts, or keratin treatments. The appointments finish with a complimentary paraffin dip and makeup touch up. I have been going to Salon Spa W for years. As you walk in they are always so friendly. They offer you a green tea, hot cocoa, water, or even a glass of wine! The stylish I see is Elle, she is amazing! She always greets me with a big smile and is easy to talk to. She gives the best scalp massage before she starts to cut my hair. I do not have as much hair as I used to have, but that doesn't matter. She always makes me feel comfortable with my hair and even gives me new tips on how to style it. Great, first time experience this morning with Liv! The consultation before getting started was a breath of fresh air. I have never had a hairstylist give me recommendations and help me decide what I wanted to do based off what I was explaining. They give you a complimentary shoulder and neck massage AND hand wax before washing your hair. The new salon is beautiful and reasonably priced. I have been loyal to a long time hair stylist but lately feel like she doesn't care about doing a good job- Liv made me want to switch hairstylists today. I will be back for sure. I got a blowout and my makeup done for a wedding today. All of the staff at the salon truly went above and beyond for me. The blow out and makeup turned out amazing and exactly as I wanted. What set this salon apart though was the staff. Due to a more demanding client they were running behind. I could tell that was not normal for this salon. This is hands-down the best salon I have ever been to in my life! I presently live in the northern suburbs of Chicago, and Chicago should take notes! The service here is impeccable. My daughter had her haircut by Liv, who gave her a wonderful consultation. She showed her pictures to make sure she was comfortable with what they were discussing. Liv gave her a great haircut, paraffin wax treatment, touched up both her and my make up as well as trimming my bangs! She further explained exactly what products would be best and precisely how to use them. Michelle, the receptionist was incredibly thoughtful and helpful. She gave us a wonderful tour, an overview of the salon and continually offered wine champagne or flavored waters along with dried fruit and nuts. She even offered to run and get me an hors d'oeuvre at the restaurant next-door! Rian gave me a wonderful pedicure. Even though she was new she did the best job I have had in a long time. Excellently executed services by a very knowledgeable staff. Not only does my hair look fantastic--and the way I wanted--but it is also healthier after I received the Olaplex treatment. Your consultation is extremely useful because the staff isn't just a "yes" staff that will agree to whatever service you think will look good. Blakelee tailored the look I was going for by taking into account my complexion, my beauty regimen and my time for maintenance. She also had a few pictures suggestions herself and I ended up choosing one of those over the one I brought in! (It didn't hurt that the photograph was of Mila Kunis ;)) The Salon itself is beautiful, clean and professional with good aroma and a "chic" vibe. You can price out your desired services during your consultation and you have a "mini consult" right before your color/cut to make sure you are still down for what you are going to get. I was able to get a time that fit within my hectic attorney schedule and within the week of my consultation. I tend to be over agreeable with my stylist when in the chair, but Blakelee and Corbin made certain that this was the direction I wanted to go. I was asked what, if any, troubles I had with my hair and I mentioned that curling is a particularly difficult thing with my very straight hair. Corbin took the time to ask me questions, show me how to do a soft curl (and what products to use to keep it), and even suggested I try myself while in the salon. Only suggestions would be--be prepared to have product suggestions throughout your visit. Truly, this is pretty typical for any salon. Additionally, there is limited parking--However! I am not particularly familiar with East Village and there may have been more convenient parking than what I was aware. Overall excellent. read more

This place is amazing! I am from out of town and was in Des Moines for a wedding. I woke up the day of the wedding and my no chip that I had gotten at home somehow was turning from pale pink to a weird beige brown! It looked terrible!! I called in a panic hoping at 8am someone could help me. Of course they were fully booked but told me to come in anyway to see if they could do something. The front desk staff was awesome and the nail tech was able to quickly file off the top coats, repolish, and put on a new clear coat. They were so accommodating and friendly! Salon W is truly the best. I have been seeing Blakelee (colorist) for 5 years and she is outstanding. She listens to what I want, offers feedback/advice, and then she does her magic. I always walk away feeling revitalized and so happy about my hair. Mollie has been cutting my hair for at least 3 years and whether it is just a trim or something more dramatic she does a fabulous job. My hair is difficult to work with and Liv was very patient and took the time to listen and work with me on what I wanted. I had been struggling for many days, months, and years to get my hair to the exact style I've been striving for without any luck, until I went into Salon Spa W. When I first got there I was greeted by several friendly and eager employees of the salon who offered me a free beverage and checked me in. After I enjoyed my glass of water & took in the awesome atmosphere the salon provides I was given a tour of the salon by the general manager, Joey. He walked me around and showed me all the possible services and choices the salon has to offer and let me tell you they have a service for just about anyone that will leave you feeling awesome, beautiful, and renewed. After I got a tour of the salon and all of the services I was greeted by yet again a very helpful and eager employee who helped prep me for my haircut with Katie Jo. I was treated like royalty by Katie Jo and her helper which was the first time a salon has made me feel this way.The girl helping Katie Jo took me to get my hair shampooed and also dipped my hands in the paraffin wax which my dry cracked hands needed desperately from the long cold winter. After I was done getting my hair shampooed and my hands dipped I went to Katie Jo's chair and thats where the magic really happened. For the longest time I have been struggling to get the hairstyle that I desire. I explained to Katie Jo the hairstyle that I wanted and even showed her a picture. Within what felt like seconds I started to see my hair transform from the frustrating mess I knew to a beautiful hair cut that anyone would die for. Katie Jo gave me the EXACT look that I was hoping for and truly made me look better then I even knew was possible. She was so talented at cutting hair but was also still very friendly and fun to talk to. She took the time to help explain and teach me how to style my hair to get the desired look I wanted, which I have never gotten from anywhere else! Katie Jo offers me current trends mixed with the classic, casual style professional's demand. She is a true artist in how she evaluates hair and determines what will work with your facial features. I have the luck of a couple of quirky cowlicks and waves with their own agenda. Katie Jo makes is all work! The evaluation throughout the cutting process allows Katie Jo to make adjustments. She begins each style with a pleasant scalp massage and shampoo. She then uses her skills to create a style in the wet hair and then blows the hair dry. Often, she works her magic a little further with the dry hair to assure the hair falls in to place. I am not one of those people that primp in the bathroom for hours. I need a style that I can blow out and hit the road running. Through the years, I have had stylist come and go.
