I was referred to John F. at Salon Xia by a friend who always gets amazing cuts and color! I came in to get a color and hair trim. I had been on a color fast for over a year, trying to make my hair healthy and more natural. Well, I got sick of that, so I decided to go a little lighter than my black tresses with some left over light brown at the ends of my hair from a while ago. I was aiming for a natural looking dark brown.. something fun for summer. I told John what I was aiming for, and left it all completely up to him. The color came out AMAZING.. it was light enough, but not too light so that it didn't look natural, or made me look like some asian import model hood rat from up the alley. I don't think he put any red in the dye (I think I have some natural red tint in my natural hair.. I'd seen it!).. but he did put a tiny bit of peroxide (usually used for highlights), which gave my hair beautiful pigments in natural light. Heavenly... As for the cut, all I wanted was to trim off some split ends, accentuate my layers and bangs, and he did just that. I've gone to so many salons that almost ALWAYS overtrim my bangs and make them way too short! ARGG. Everyone there is very nice, down to earth, and very easy to talk to, and fun to converse with! The salon is actually a very warm and inviting cottage. Not one of those super modern, cold salons that seem to turn their nose up at you and look at you like you just crawled in from the gutter (or is that just me?). Love the setting, feels like you're at your friends house, getting your hair did. I would highly recommend John. He analysis your face shape, and skin tone and gives you the best hair cuts and colors. Definitely will be going back. read more

Much like Carla F (see review), I thought really hard about writing this review because my stylist is very sweet. Unfortunately, I had a horrendous experience there a few weeks ago and will never return. Since I picked this place based on Yelp reviews, i decided I should put this out there for others to read. I had been a client for about 9 months when I decided to really cut my hair. Up until 2 weeks ago, I was a satisfied customer. My stylist was always very nice and pretty quiet which I happen to like. In the 9 months prior, she would only give me trims and do my color. BTW, I loved the results of my color, and I will definitely miss her skills there. Back to the bad haircut I received, and I mean bad. I sat in her chair and we discussed the haircut I wanted for about 10 minutes. I asked her lots of questions because I tend not to trust stylists with cutting my hair. I had a bad experience over 10 years ago and it has stayed with me. I showed her a picture of the Jennifer Aniston cut and asked her opinion. I asked her if she thought it would look good on me, and I asked her if we could modify. She said yes to both. I told her I wanted to keep my hair longer than Jen Aniston's and I asked her to show me where exactly she would cut it on me. She showed me and I felt satisfied we were on the same page. I even went as far as to ask her how confident she felt in her ability to cut it like that (trust me, I am very cautious). She said, without a pause, "I can do it. Oh yeah." I asked if she had cut this style very much over the last few months because it was so popular . She said yes. i felt comfortable giving the go ahead. Keep in mind that this cut was chopping off about 8 inches or so of my hair so I was being anal. She cut my hair wet which I never like, but who am I to say? I don't cut hair for a living. I could tell she cut off too much, but I didn't say anything since the damage was done. Plus, I decided that I could live with it if it looked good. Then, I kind of noticed she was cutting way into the hair. Like she was cutting layers, but the cut we discussed did not have layers. At this point, I get really anxious in the chair. Fast forward about an hour, and she shows me the final product. Oh goodness...I try to keep my composure. In fact, I do. Inside my head, I wanted to cry. It was UNEVEN. One side was longer than the other, and I told her so. "It is?" was her reply. It was very obvious. I started getting worried that she had no idea what she was doing. She cut the longer side a bit more and kept saying "I swear, they're the same length. I don't know why it looks longer on this side". After 2 hours of being in her chair, I had to get out of there. I said okay and decided I would assess the problem at home. I go home and immediately recognize the problem. She cut one side of the back too short because she gave me layers on the right side. The problem is that she did not give me layers on the left side!!! Seriously? How did she not see that or at least feel the difference? I was upset and had to wear my hair a certain way to work the next day so no one would notice. I had to wait until the weekend was over because I had a big volleyball tournament and could not cancel to get my hair corrected. I saw her on Monday. I worked out the best way to approach her that would yield the best results with my haircut. I really wanted to go in there and scream at her, demand my money back and go home crying. Instead, I went in and was very polite. I told her I found the problem and that it seemed that I had 2 haircuts going on. One on the left side and a different one on the right side. She did not apologize or offer to refund my money. Instead, she said "okay. I'll fix it.". OOOOOKAY? I wanted to scream. She started cutting the shorter side, and I asked her if she realized that it was the other side that was longer. WTH? She then proceeds to cut the other side and even out my haircut, but not before she cut even more into the already too short side. What is wrong with people? I just kept thinking that as I left the salon wanting to cry. Pertaining to why she didn't cut my hair anywhere near what I asked for, I think it's because she only knew how to cut one way that was close to the modified bob I asked for. Instead of trying to do it, she went with something she knew and thought it would be acceptable. I think the issue with the uneven hair cut came because she made a mistake and accidentally cut layers in my hair. Maybe she realized she did wrong and tried to hide it by not finishing off the other side. I'll never know why, but she gave me another learning experience. Not that i needed it. I don't want to release her name, but I'm guessing if the owner reads this, he will know who I'm talking about. I would implore him to approach her and get her the help she needs so no one else has to be traumatized by another bad hairdresser. read more

After a month or two, I'm finally writing a review. I recently moved here from Florida and needed a new hair stylist. I did much research and found this place upon reviews and location. When I first came in for the hair consultation, the first thing I ask the stylist was if she could match the blonde streak in my hair (it's a platinum blonde streak against a very dark brunette color) and she said she could. I even offered to get the color formula from my hair dresser in Florida and she said 'no, it's okay, I can match the color no problem". I was stoked to finally touch up my hair and cut it. When I came in for the hair appointment.. I was getting really anxious as my hair had to set for almost 2 hours! Never had it taken this long.. After the wait, I was excited to see the color.. And I honestly almost broke into tears.. It was NOT platinum blonde but orange. As she started cutting it, I reminded her I did not want layers yet she proceeded to razor and layer my hair! Ugh! I finally said.. Okay that's it.. And told her to leave it. I paid and left. I got home and felt so unhappy with my hair! I had 2 different colors of blonde against my brunette hair. I felt so ugly! Upon going to work.. My friends were even telling me how off the color is and the cut was just uneven and that I shouldn't have paid the ridiculous amount! Finally 2 weeks later, I flew back home to Florida for a quick visit and the first thing I did was book an appointment with my hairstylist. As she looked at it.. She was mortified and her words were exact "I can't believe she let you walk out like this!" An hour and half later... The color was ONE correct color and my hair was styled. I was so happy we did the happy dance together. When I came back to Pasadena.. Everyone said it was MUCH better. I gave Salon Xia a try and I was just disappointed. I won't be coming back. read more

Highly recommend Gillian if you are looking for an amazing colorist. She does a fantastic job with balayage, ombré, and lived in highlights. She creates an amazing look for each client which appears natural, sun-kissed and brightens up the face. The process can take a long time- but it is worth it. The best part is the highlights last for a while, so no need to go in every month for touch ups. I think I have converted 6 of my friends to start going to Gillian! read more

I recently found out about the owner, Mark by accident when I noticed a friend's myspace friend's beautiful curly hair! I also have naturally curly hair and it's very difficult to find a good hairstylist that can successfully cut and color/highlight your hair. Mark is AWESOME! I highly recommend him and you won't leave disappointed! I have medium length hair and for a cut, color and highlight I am usually there 3-4 hours but he does MOST of the work, and has his assistant wash you out, etc. So I believe that is why it takes so long. But the salon is nice, cool and laid back. If you have curly hair look no more and call Mark! read more

I decided to try out Salon Xia when in town for a friend's wedding, as it was near where I was staying and had good reviews for curly hair. My appointment was with Stephanie, and I had a cut and a blowout. Pros: The space is really pleasant, with a lot of natural light and a really soothing atmosphere. everyone is friendly, and it seems like the clientèle are loyal and are friends with the people who work there. They offer you drinks, which I guess is standard for boutiquey places but is also nice. Stephanie was sweet and pleasant to talk to. She listened when I explained what I wanted, and seemed like she knew what she was doing. While overall the cut turned out unflattering, she actually did fulfil the couple of specific requests I made about making sure it looked healthy rather than trendy. The blowout turned out pretty good, which is probably why I didn't notice the issues with my haircut until later. The one amazing thing was that it kept shape for the rest of the night, which never happens. (The humidity gets up to 20%, and my hair usually goes back to curly.) Whatever technique and products she used were incredible. Cons: Street parking is only an hour, which is not a big deal if people are on top of it. Stephanie was about 10 minutes late, which is normal but shouldn't be happening when you know your clientèle don't have a lot of parking options. Also, a man who I assume was the owner pulled her aside in the middle of my cut to chat about salon business. It was totally not her fault and lasted only 5-10 minutes but at that point, the timing was already cutting it close and I didn't want her to rush the style as a result. The reason I feel compelled to write a review is because I'm constantly on the search for a salon that can cut curly hair, and I was hoping that I would find one here. Unfortunately, while my haircut isn't bad per se, it harkens back to a time in my adolescence when I waged chemical warfare on my hair not realizing that it didn't look good because no one I went to could cut it the way you're supposed to cut curly hair. The cut was professional (even, clean lines, healthy looking), and actually looks okay (though not great) when I straighten it, but the layers don't really work, and when it dries curly I get this mushroom look: short and poofy on top, with a longer layer hanging down at the same length. Not so bad that it's worth the trouble to go somewhere else to try to fix it, but I'll likely get my hair cut in a month or two instead of my usual 6-12 month schedule, which is especially frustrating given the cut was not cheap. If you're paying for a high-end haircut it shouldn't remind you of a childhood full of bad haircuts at the local salon. If you go to the salon for a chill experience, don't mind paying for it and aren't dealing with parking, it's not a bad option. But if you have curly hair and want a cut that will last you a couple of months, I'd search for alternatives. read more

After oggling her hair through the entire lunch, I finally asked "who styles your hair?" We had a long conversation about Mark (the salon owner). I'll tell you what she told me then: Mark really listens to what his clients are looking for and his color is brilliant. All of the stylists at his salon are friendly, respectable and skilled. I have very short hair, and sometimes it is hard to find a hairdresser who knows how to cut it. I have been to numerous expensive Beverly HIlls stylists to try to get the right cut for my problem curls, but always left unsatisfied. After my last horrible $175 cut with a "curl specialist" in Beverly Hills 3 weeks ago, I decided to stray from the supposed best of the best. I'm so glad I did, and actually FOUND the best of the best at much lower prices and without the attitude! First of all the salon itself is super cute with friendly and helpful front desk people. It was clean and stocked with beverages. Parking was easy. Nora could not have been better! She listened to my issues, apologized for my past butcher job, and fixed it. She gave me an incredible cut and partial highlights and a great blow out, which lasted for 4 days. I just finished washing and drying it for the first time since the cut. It looks fabulous. I've been seeing Gillian for years - first when she worked in South Pas and now in Pasadena at Salon Xia. She is really a fabulous stylist. She takes her time with every service and then always makes things look polished for me with a beautiful blow-dry and flat iron. I just had a marathon coloring correction. Going from dark hair to light involves stripping the hair of old color, neutralizing it, washing it about 500 times (or maybe 5 times - I lost count, but it felt like a lot), putting in color and toner, and then blow-drying and flat ironing for the shine. Maybe there was more involved than this, but these are the basics of this torturous color service that I will never undergo again. I'm embarrassed to say how long I spent at the salon as DH cared for baby; suffice it to say I got numerous texts asking for my ETA and I had to keep revising the estimate. Had o'dourves not been laid out for customer appreciation month, I would surely have fainted. As it was, I left a couple pounds heavier with some lighter locks and a grateful, but slightly exhausted smile. read more

I have been all over Pasadena, Glendale, and even sometimes the greater Los Angeles area trying to find the right place. John did an amazing job on my hair. The hands down best cut and color I have ever had. When I first got there, I sat down and explained to him how my hair is very difficult to color, never turns out right, and normally I have to go to another salon to get it corrected. (way expensive) John listened to everything I said, and made sure he understood exactly what I wanted with both my cut and color. He used a variety of different colors when highlighting, and really spent a lot of time to get my cut just right. I was completely amazed with the end results. He gave me beautiful, natural, and perfect blondish highlights, while keeping my hair long with great layers in both the back and front. Mark (the owner) is a genius! After trying numerous hair stylists with disastrous results, he saved my poor, super thick mane from the perpetual ponytail. He knew exactly how to cut my hair to reduce the bulk without hacking into it (like the previous stylists), is friendly, and just all around the best. And his assistant gives great head massages while she's shampooing you! I absolutely love Salon Xia! Tatiana does an amazing job every single time I've come in to get a haircut. I'm kind of clueless about exactly what kind of haircut I want so I don't give her that much input (I think one time I literally went in and said something along the lines of "make it look nice"), but she always cuts my hair in a way that not only looks great leaving the salon, but also over time without much styling. It even grows out nicely (which is rare since I have super thick hair that often looks poofy when growing out). She does an awesome job, whether it's cut, color, or highlights etc. I've done it all and I never leave unhappy. I am so happy to have found Salon Xia. I discovered it because a woman came in to where I was working and she had amazing layers, so I asked her who did them. She said "Stephanie at Salon Xia." I had her write it down for me and miraculously didn't lose that information. Months went by and I needed a haircut. I was afraid of trying someone new, so I checked in with the guy I was going to already.He was out of town, so I went for it and tried out Stephanie and Salon Xia. (Also, Salon Xia is a lot closer than where I was going before.) I was so happy with my haircut! I have thick, curly hair that needs proper layers and it is very hard for me to find someone who does them right. I left there elated with a perfect cut and scheduled a little color, which I never do. A couple weeks later, Stephanie did my color and it was just what I asked for. Very natural, honey-blond highlights. This week I desperately needed another cut, so I went in today and Stephanie did exactly what I imagined I wanted, and even better. I think she is an artist, and has an amazing sense of what needs to be done. She is also slightly conservative in that she would rather err on the side of caution than do too much. She is also very nice! Lastly, the salon is a hidden gem off of Mentor. It's in a charming bungalow which is exquisitely maintained. It's very tidy and has lots of beautiful customized features, such as the beautiful floors. And they always offer you a beverage when you arrive. Hope that helps someone. read more

I was looking to grow out my hair, so she kept the length but gave me some layers so it wouldnt look so drab. Finding a great stylist is hard...I was lucky enough to have some co-workers refer me to Mark about a year and a half ago. Mark, the owner, is an extraordinary stylist...I was anxious about cutting my waist length hair so I had a consultation with Mark who explained how he would cut (then donating the hair to charity) and style my hair that would match the photos I brought in and my lifestyle (needs to be simple). He is very experienced (knows what will look best on you) but also accommodating to what you want. Also, his cuts last a long time and grow out beautifully until it's time for the next trim. Lulu is absolutely amazing! I had to find a new hairstylist on the Eastside after we moved and I accidentally found Lulu and have never looked back! She is such a pleasure to spend an hour with - not only is she extremely talented with hair, but she is wonderful to chat with and has a really amazing positive attitude all the time!
