a sweet little old diner in hyde park! the interior design and service are nothing to call home about, but that's the type of no frills diner that can be expected. pretty packed here on a weekend lunch. souvlaki sandwich was excellent, very hearty! the breakfast omelette with hash browns was only alright, pretty bland

I grew up in Hyde Park and I used to frequent Salonica quite a bit. I haven't been there in 30's years so I decided to take my kids down memory lane. The ambiance is still the same so that made me smile. Cozy, old school restaurant. Not a lot of seating. The service was nice. Nothing to brag about. The disappointing part is the food. I had the corned beef hash breakfast. I posted a before and after photo. I couldn't finish my meal. I don't think my food was cooked thoroughly, especially the hash browns. The corned beef hash was mushy and I don't know what to say about the eggs, just horrible. The food was bland. I tried to power through because I was hungry but I couldn't. My kids said the pancakes were a 5 out of 10 and the french toast a 7 out of 10. Needless to say we will not be returning.

I go here at least three times a month either for lunch or for breakfast. They have a great Gyro. The service is always quick and I love the booth by the window. You get the sun on your face.

Been coming here for many years I always enjoy the food... I have been wanting pancakes for 3 months and finally chose to come here! The only downside was the bacon was cold cold made for a weird aftertaste. Overall food and service was great!

I love Salonica! It feels like such cozy family friendly restaurant. It's an old school, no frills type of place, but it is perfectly nestled within Hyde Park. The menu has a lot of variety to choose from and the items are fairly priced. The food is also very good! I've gone several times and haven't been disappointed yet! Each time I've gone in I've had the same waitress and see the same staff each time and they do a great job taking care of their customers. I would recommend this place to anyone, but be mindful of big groups. It's not large on the inside so groups of more than 4 might struggle.

Food and service is immaculate! Also, the portions are so big for the price! The side of hash browns was massive and definitely good for multiple people to share. The French toast was also very filling and I couldn't finish it. The wrap was great too and we added avocados which elevated the dish even more! Overall, this place has great breakfast food for a great price. Only downside is that the place itself is very hot as there isn't any air conditioning and it also isn't very fancy. It's a tier below diner style. There's seating, but nothing more and nothing less. A bit of a homely ambiance, but it does feel a bit hot in there. Other than that, food wise it's great!

It was my 1st time ever dining in Salonica Restaurant. This restaurant is nestled in the well known area of Hyde Park in Chicago. It's quaint and it's clean. Closed on Monday, the restaurant offers daily specials of Greek eats and American comfort food. I was there for lunch and enjoyed the Gyros plate with a salad.

The food came out cold and we were confused as to how we were supposed to seat ourselves. Other than that, the service was good and the hot chocolate was very delicious. Standard flavors.

Side salad, nothing special and not bad

They were a bit short-staffed that morning, so service was slower than usual, but we weren't in a hurry and the staff remained friendly throughout. I ordered the daily special French toast, added fruit and pecans, plus a side of bacon. The French toast was absolutely massive and could easily be shared. My only complaint was the $3.75 charge for pecans, which felt a little steep for the amount included. Overall, the food was good, the diner atmosphere was exactly what I was hoping for, and there's something special about dining in such a historic Chicago institution. If you're visiting the city and don't mind a bit of a wait, Lou Mitchell's is worth experiencing at least once.

And this is on top of the city parking you have to pay to eat there. It's just craziness. I will say that the toast was pretty delicious. The server was nice enough. The bathrooms were downstairs and needed attention.

I had the corned beef hash, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, while my husband ordered the Mexican omelet with taco meat, and he couldn't stop talking about how good it was. We also enjoyed an iced coffee and a chocolate shake, both of which were fantastic. Of course, we couldn't resist trying a few extras, so we ordered the chocolate-covered pancakes and potato pancakes for the table. Both were incredible and the perfect addition to our meal. Between the delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and friendly service, this was such a great experience. We will definitely be back the next time we're craving an amazing breakfast or brunch. I would assume a place where the newest thing since the 1980s is the security camera would have vinyl with more cracks and patina than my trusty old leather jacket! But no, it's in fantastic shape. Especially given that, the vibe in here is awesome! It's like stepping through a time-portal. For food, I ordered an old favorite: Pigs in Blankets. The food came out fast, though, to be fair, there was only one other person dining in at the time. The sausage links were crisp, and the pancakes were lightly sweet and fluffy. All in all, great! While perhaps not enough to summon the Michelin Guide inspectors, it was better than the average greasy spoon. Finally, I really appreciate that the prices are reasonable, and that there is parking! Final verdict: I've had a small handful of spectacular breakfasts. I've also had criminal breakfasts, where two unsalted eggs, two bacon strips, and a tablespoon of potatoes costs $14.95. Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House finds itself in that sweet spot in between - it is neither a spectacular spot (often have prices to boot), nor is it an overpriced, underwhelming greasy spoon that stays in business thanks to regulars who have been coming for decades and don't want anything better.

From the moment we sat down, our server was amazing. He was incredibly attentive, walked us through the menu, and explained that the "single" cheeseburger is actually a double patty, while the "double" is actually a triple. He also recommended ordering the bone marrow and saving the jam that comes with it to spread on the burger, a little "Au Cheval hack" that many regulars apparently swear by. We tried it, and it made the burger even more flavorful. I also highly recommend adding the fried egg to the burger. It gave it a rich, creamy texture that brought everything together perfectly. You can also add a fried egg. We opted not to get the egg as it can get messy. The burger is a hearty, meaty burger especially with the bacon. It is for burger purists who want meat, bread, and cheese. There are a few toppings and sauce inside but it gets overshadowed with each meaty bite. The meat patties are perfectly cooked and the bun is sturdy enough to hold up to the meat and toppings without falling apart. The side pickle is a must have and is included because you will need some acid to cut through the meatiness of the burger. It was worth it because we did not wait very long. However if I had to wait an hour or two i would say come back another time. We did not try the bone marrow which is what seems to be very popular here but given the order of 4 hamburgers and fries we knew it would be too much food for a group of 4. Service was great. Interior was great. My only request is that the music be turned down just a little bit because it is quite loud inside.
