Salonica is a very basic plac( interior, food & service). It really does not have great food. The service is very unprecdictable and the food even more :good, bad and ugly! Basic diner with NOT great food. Greek owned, but not good Greek food at all! Eat here when you are desperate for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Cafe Florian was a better place. The people in Hyde Park need to really start to expect more from all different kinds of dumpy places and tell proprietors that they are wanting better food, service etc. People that work here are nice.....Go to the Pancake House it's better! When I walked in and waited to be seated, the man at the front counter just stared and did not say anything to me. Someone else finally came to the front to seat me. I then ate my meal that came out cold and stale. The man then came up to me and asked me if I could move from my seat to the counter. I'm not exactly sure why I had to move. Sure we paid a little extra for french toast and sausage, or the waitress took forever and barely got our orders right, or the small yet expensive orange juice... but the meal itself....amazing!!!!Plus i left my cell phone here and they found it and kept it without asking for a tip. I work on the University of Chicago campus, and places to go for lunch are scarce. This place served a good variety of items, hot, fresh, and FAST, time and time again. Try the Monte Cristo!!! It's always a bit crowded, but they have a big back room too. Cash only. They deliver. Menu consists of breakfast (night or day), gyros, sanwiches, burgers, meat plates, appetizers, and drinks. I do not recommend this restaurant. It does its peak business on the weekends when it is I'll equipped to handle it's customers properly. The food is rushed out of the kitchen and is hit or miss. The wait staff is rushed . There is no management apparent and the guy taking your money is gruff and totally resistant to anything a customer has to say. Salonica exposes the social tensions underlying historical Mediterranean conflicts and the effects of the American culture industry by providing both theoretically authentic Greek food alongside stereotypical American diner food. Like all things, the "normal" American diner food (eg. tuna melt) is executed to routine perfection, whereas the so-called "ethnic" is prone to issues in quality. I love Salonica! If you ever notice, behind the counter they sell olive oil from their own farm. WHAT!?!?! I just thought that was noteworthy. Aside from that thought. I've only ordered breakfast here, because I can't bring myself to come here and not order breakfast, but I also can't handle more than breakfast in one sitting. It's always up to my standards! It's a nice place, with a great diner atmosphere, not the cheap feeling atmosphere you'll find at many places, and it's clean. The service is fast, but varies in quality, although the food more than makes up for it. Friends have ordered dinner here before and it was great, but I really only come for my b-fast. It's always greasy, and something to keep in mind is that greasy-ness is necessary if you want to stand out in my book (of breakfast joints). The only thing that keeps me from coming here EVERY weekend is the prices. It's not too pricey, since you can get the frenchtoast and coffee for $5.25 or $6.25, can't recall, but it's when you add the eggs or OJ or potatoes that it starts to add up. I have been eating at Salonica for over 15 years. They have a warm and friendly environment. I enjoy their breakfast and burgers. They have a dish called "Nick's Delight," I order it when I can afford to splurge. It is Gyro and Roast Beef on pita...To die for! The soups are good and everything is inexpensive. The owner John is the most kind man, he's very personable. I've been around for his wedding, and the births of children. Salonica is the requisite Greek deli in Hyde Park. Its long hours make it a relatively popular spot early in the morning or late in the evening when you're likely to appreciate the standard fare, gyros, lemon soup, or kabob platters. The booths are great for long conversations or study sessions and the restaurant has he advantage of being relatively quiet. The food is not exemplary and though it is enjoyable, most of the regular patrons I know go for the atmosphere. read more

My family stopped here on the way to the museum of science and industry for lunch. Our server was so kind and helpful without being intrusive . There were 7 of us and we all got something different. Normally a restaurant specializes in a certain type of food and the rest is just ok but we all got something different and loved it. Our table got a breakfast burrito. Greek salad, cheeseburger, club sandwich, chicken tenders and fries, mashed potatoes and buffalo chicken sandwich. It was all amazing especially the mashed potatoes, fries, tzatzki sauce and the fluffy naan/pita bread it came with (not sure of the name of it) and we were surprised that the price was so reasonable! read more

They could serve me top ramen for breakfast here and I'd still be happy. A quaint, cozy diner on a street corner in an old, attractive urban neighborhood serving cheap, comforting and unpretentious food. Stroll past historic architecture (including Frank Lloyd Wright's home) on an early Chicago morning and pop into Salonica. Admire the antiquated cash register, the fuzzy old TV set humming in the background, and the old men at the counter reading the paper while drinking black coffee out of plain white ceramic mugs. Have some pancakes or a greek omelette; spread the little packets of grape jam on your toast as you look out the window at the dog-walkers, university professors, and neighborhood delivery people going about their day. I was planning on getting a gyro since I was going to be in the area, so I stopped by Salonica, after reading some Yelp reviews. I'm from the southside of Chicago, so there are quite a few gyro places where you can get them for cheap. I ended up ordering a gyro and a souvlaki. The were both good, though the gyro had more meat, i expected as much. I will say that I think they make the tzatziki in house, because it was a bit saltier and thinner than a store brought brand. A lot, actually. I wouldn't recommend that if you have high blood pressure. The people working there were very friendly. My final order was the gyro and souvlaki with fries (for both) and 2 extra sauces, which cost me about 20 some odd bucks, which is a bit more expensive than what you could find at a typical whole in the wall. Everything was okay, not a big fan of the fries, but I do love a good diner atmosphere with friendly staff. Side note: I believe the owners are of the restaurant are Greek (what the lady told me), but I can't affirm to the "authentic-ness" of the food I ordered. 4 star service, 3 star food. read more

I went to this place once and that was it. I am from Turkey, I live right across from Greece and I spent my childhood in Greek restaurants. I know what Greek food should taste like. I had mediocre expectations but uh-uh. This place was straight up disgusting. Everything was drenched in oil, and all the food items they had were fast food style. As a pescetarian, the only thing I could eat was fish and chips, in a so called Greek restaurant... If I was Greek I would be ashamed of this place. I was here not to long ago. I was peacefully eating my meal, when I believe it was the managers/cashiers daughter that came up to my table, and said "you have to go we are closed I want my daddy and I to go home" I thought it was really rude of her to say that to a customer! Yum! My friend has been talking about this place forever and I just have not had a chance to connect with her yet. I got home after a long day and really wanted a gyro so I went to grub hub. I saw that they had them here so I figured why not give it a try. Something about this gyro was the best that I've ever had. The bread wasn't great actually but the meat was seasoned awesome. I didn't even eat the bread. Save a few calories since I inhaled the gyro meat ha! The fries were pretty good. Wish they were crispy, but that is pretty impossible in delivery mode. read more

despite living only 2 blocks away, i've only gone to salonica twice and both times were very satisfying! i went for breakfast the first time and ordered the denver omelette with hash browns and wheat toast. the omelette was HUGE and extremely tasty, and the hash browns were nicely crisp. the next time, i got the egg lemon soup and it was surprisingly delicious??? i had made egg lemon soup at home before, but salonica's version was far creamier and the tartness of the lemon mixed well with the undertones of the chicken broth. also, unlimited bread with a HUGE bowl of soup for just 4 dollars??? that's my type of meal. though, i can't say everything at salonica is as tasty as what i've eaten as the sandwiches that my boyfriend has gotten have been Underwhelming. i think salonica has decently priced reliable breakfast and pretty great egg lemon soup, and i think that's all i'll really come back for, but overall, p decent option with really nice booths!!! Greek diner - Located near University of Chicago in the Hyde Park area of the south side of Chicago. I've been going here since I was a little girl taking ballet classes upstairs. The prices are very reasonable and the food is the best in Hyde Park. You can get a full meal for under $10. I always have the sagnaki (flaming cheese). Anything you order here is going to be good. It's got a local diner vibe, with basic level food and some underwhelming "Greek" dishes like soggy spanakopita. Unfortunately you also have to wait quite a while for that basic food.
