I am not by any means someone who goes out of their way for a burger, let alone craves one. I would equally be pressed to give an establishment 5 stars solely for a burger but this place defies all odds. Au Cheval was recommended to me during a work trip and I am SO glad I gave it a shot. Easily the best burger I've ever had, so much that I ordered it twice during my stay. Would highly recommend, their burgers are life changing.

We were heavily recommended this place by a friend and boy it was worth it. We showed up on a Sunday around noon, only had a 45min wait, which was not bad at all compared to our original attempt on Friday night! We were seated near where I could watch the line work, which I appreciated as someone in the food industry. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, explaining the quirks of the menu as well as his own suggestions for us to try. The burgers themselves were amazing. Easily in my top 5 favorite restaurant style burgers of all time. The tender peppered bacon is the perfect touch for these burgers. If you can withstand the wait, it's truly a wonderful time at Au Cheval.

It's burger time! I was so excited to come experience the Au Cheval burger. I must tell you, I love burgers, but I love big juicy flavorful burgers. The patties here, are very thin. They put a double patty, with the delicious caramelized, bacon and egg. It makes up for the tiny little patties that you experience with your burger. The service is outstanding. I'm gonna tell you, quick and very efficient. I really wanted to like these thin, tiny patties, but I just couldn't. However... I always like me some skin on french fries.

Best.Burger.Period! You need to come here as soon as they open, no reservation.. you need to get in line/waitlist.

Amazing burger! The vibe is so cute and even though there is typically a wait there are so many cute bars around it to have a drink while you wait.

Au Cheval does not need anymore positive reviews and is a classic staple of Chicago, and one of my favorite burgers of all time. You will need to either come off hours for a shorter wait, or be prepared to wait for several hours. It's nice that you can be texted when your table is ready, because there are so many other restaurants and bars you can kill time at before coming back for your beloved burger. A warning that the standard burger already comes with two patties, so if you get an extra patty it is a total of 3. Definitely add the delicious thick cut peppered bacon to the burger (and I am not even usually a bacon person), and the egg if you want a bit of extra goo. We've also tried the fried chicken which was delicious, but if your mind is set on just burger, I'd recommend sticking to that. If you are with a small group that wants a bit of variety and is willing to share burgers, I'd recommend adding the chicken.

Enjoyed lunch here when we touched down in Chicago. The restaurant was quite busy, which is always a good sign. The inside of the restaurant is a bit compact, but super friendly. Great music was playing the entire time, which had me rocking in my seat. Our server was super nice and helpful with the menu. We went for the single cheeseburger and the bologna sandwich. Both were good, but the burger waa wAaay better in my opinion. A must try, and you only need a single. We added bacon, with the egg, Soo good. I took off one star because I think the burger is a bit pricey, and the bologna wasn't all that. Otherwise this place was legit and I'd definitely return.

Went to Small Cheval and Au Cheval back to back on consecutive days. Both were fabulous. We went to Au Cheval when they opened on a Monday and only had a 15-minute wait. I don't know that I would wait 4-5 hours to eat here, yet it was delicious! We each ordered burgers, as well as shared fries and hash browns. The hash browns were a bit too crispy for my tastes, but still good. Others in our party loved them. The burgers were cooked to perfection and the taste out of this world! As busy as they were, the food is served fast and the portions filling! Isa was a great server and made sure our drinks were always topped off.

Au Cheval was solid overall. The burger absolutely lived up to the hype, and the fries and root beer were great as well. I deducted a star because of the service. Our waitress forgot to put in our appetizer order, which is understandable and mistakes happen. After we finished our burgers, she brought us our check. We kindly reminded her that we were still waiting on our chicken to come out. She apologized and said she would bring us an order of chicken to go. She comped the chicken, which I appreciated. However, as tourists, we were looking forward to enjoying the full meal in the restaurant. Since there were several open tables at the time, it felt a little strange to be encouraged toward takeout instead of being able to stay and enjoy the appetizer there. Having to walk to the hotel with the chicken also noticeably affected the quality and overall experience. Overall, the food was great, but the service experience kept it from being a five-star visit.

One of my students, who was from Chicago, highly recommended Au Cheval to me. He actually recommended it for their cocktails being that it was one of the best places he's had a bourbon drink. After doing my own research I found that it was recognized as having one of the best burgers in America. For that alone I had to try the place. Au Cheval was my first stop after flying into Midway. I knew that the place didn't take reservations, so I gambled with the fact that I was dropping by on a Monday night. No way that the place would be busy. Boy, was I wrong. I arrived around 7:30pm and the place was packed. I put myself on the waitlist and thankfully they add you to an automated system where you get texted when your seat is almost ready. I went to the bar next door thinking I was going to be there for a while, but I really only waited for 15-20 minutes. When I checked in, one of the front desk hostesses kindly offered to hold my luggage for me. They must get that a lot, because they have a whole ticketed coat check system. I had a seat at the bar where service was great and vibes were everything. I was feeling the old school hip hop instrumentals while waiting shortly for my food and drink. My server was friendly and helped to offer modifications that worked to my dietary preferences. I don't eat pork, which I understood was a very popular add-on to the burger, so he suggested I try it with foie gras as the next best thing. I got a single cheeseburger (comes with 2 patties) and added a sunny side egg and foie gras. I thought the burger was delicious. It was so flavorful and well seasoned, and the egg and foie gras gave the burger extra richness. The burger sans add-ons was $30, so it came out to ~$44 with everything. Was it really worth that price? Debatable. That said, I would still recommend this place and want to try their chilaquiles!

Stopped by Au Cheval in Chicago this past weekend for my birthday trip with my girls and it was honestly one of the best burgers I've had. The Single Cheeseburger comes with 2 patties with the addition of their bacon and egg. Highly recommend this spot for a quick bite! It is a small bar spot with tight seating but it really wasn't a bother.

    Christopher V.

While still a four-star burger for me, subtle changes have made it not quite the best anymore. The patties are smaller and the bun is different now. I was even there the day the bun changed and the cooks and manager were impressed I noticed--it's like McDonald's changing the Big Mac sesame seed bun! There's some things you just don't do. The bologna sandwich is very salty and garlicky, not quite as balanced as the original. On the plus side, service is still pretty good, and the fries are excellent, along with the well-made cocktails and tasty chicken. While three-hour waits will ensure a disappointing meal, I've noticed the wait has been more reasonable as the hype has died down. 3.75 stars overall

Best burger in the city (so far) - definitely recommend adding the eggs + bacon, which was the highlight of the meal. Meat was cooked perfectly. We just walked around West Loop while waiting for ~1.5 hours on a Saturday afternoon, so the time went by pretty quickly. Definitely worth the wait!

How long is the wait in the evening?

It was about 35 min for a party of 4. But outside seating was available immediately.

    Do they have Gluten-Free Buns?

    I am unfortunately not sure!

What's the dress code? Thinking about dining in before a baseball game

No dress code, honestly. I was wearing a tank top and shorts and they seated me

Is it wagyu beef and can lettuce and tomatoes be added to the burgers?

You won't even need to do any of that...it's incredible as it comes. And no x 3

If I go on a Monday with a table of 7, what time should I get there for minimal wait?

My suggestion, put your name in anticipating a 1-2 hour wait, and then walk around the west Loop. Go to Levian cookies, etc..

Do you have any non beef items?

Yes. They have French fries and they also have chicken.

Does anyone know if their meat is kosher?

Not sure but, our waiter ASKED if we had any allergies to certain foods .

What's the best time to go for minimal wait?

    Right when they open!

Is there a quiet bar near here?

Haymarket is a great option. It's not necessarily quiet but not super loud.

Which oil do they use to fry the fries? ETA: they use beef fat per the fry cook.

    They use beef fat

Since no reservations are taken what happens to guests during the wait period during the cold months? About how long would the wait be for a single guest dining alone midweek.... I will be in Chicago in early March !

There's a couple bars in the area, give them your number...go grab a couple of drinks and they'll text you when your spot is ready

    Do they lettuce wrap burgers?

    Yes!

Do they seat a party of 5 or more together?

We had a party of 8 and they just had us split up into groups of 4 in the booths. They could probably accommodate 8 at the tables but the wait will be very long

Is this restaurant okay for well-behaved children (8 and 14)?

it's kinda old school, a bit dark, low ceiling, I've ate inside once don't recall children, this was around 2pm on a weekday. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be OK, my opinion ....it's not a kid place. They have outdoor dining as well as… Read more

Do they take reservations? Note: answered my own question. they do not. called them and asked.

You have to go in person to be put on the list and they page you with two hours usually for seating.

    Cómo puedo reservar mesa?

You have to go to the restaurant

Do fries come with the Single Burger or does that need to be purchased separately?

    Everything is a la carte

Is the outdoor seating dog friendly?

    Yes

Has the wait time gone down due to COVID? Have they started taking reservations online?

I don’t know. My friend was the one who picked up our order and he called in advance. My only suggestion is to either call in advance or possibly ordering online if you’re doing takeout.

    Do they have outdoor seating?

Pre-Covid they did not have outdoor sitting. Now I'm not entirely sure if they've set something up for outdoor seating. I honestly couldn't imagine where they would seat anyone outside as it's in a busy intersection

The fish was so flaky and tender that it was falling apart. The breading was perfect. I also loved the fries it came with because they were crispy on the outside and had a good amount of potato in each bite -- Crispy Fried Chicken: 9/10 the breading was also perfect but I do think it's missing a good sauce. the dish is included with a bottle hot sauce but because I don't do spicy sauces, I did find the fried chicken a little dry on its own. Loved the coleslaw and mashed potatoes that came on the side though -- Lobster Mac and Cheese: 8/10 very creamy and cheesy but not much lobster flavor. wasn't a bad dish at all but I probably would skip this for next time because the other dishes were more of a standout -- Sticky Date Toffee: this is the dessert they're known for and I have to admit I was reluctant to try it at first. I don't really like dates or toffee and I had read a few reviews who mentioned it was a little salty. I'm not sure if they adjusted the saltiness based on feedback but I didn't find the dessert too salty at all. It felt so balanced- the warm sponge cake, the toffee sauce, the cold ice cream and crumbs for a little bit of texture all came together perfectly In the future I hope to try their vodka pasta with spicy sausage, their chicken pot pie, their cornbread, and Bella Punch or Cosmo In terms of service, our waitress was extremely attentive and sweet -- multiple wait staff were keeping our water filled and checking in with us But outside of the food and service, I will say I was a little disappointed they charge for reservations here - it's $2.50 person and even though the cost isn't that high, I think the concept of charging for a reservation versus taking a deposit or charging a no show fee is hard for me to get behind Keep in mind they also have a 3% surcharge included in the bill as well But overall I loved my experience dining here-- I think the have so many amazing dishes to try and it was so hard to choose so I definitely would love to come back to try more

When I asked about the wait time, the host joked that it was two hours. Under normal circumstances, I would have laughed and played along. Given what had just happened minutes earlier, it did not quite land... but to their credit, the moment I explained the situation, everything shifted. They sat me promptly and turned what could have been a lingering bad night into a completely different experience. Julio, my server, set the tone immediately. Julio was professional, attentive, and generous. He brought out meatballs on the house, which were excellent. I ordered calamari, rigatoni alla vodka with shrimp, and what I believe was a chocolate torte for dessert (also on the house, which I was not expecting). Everything was spot on. The rigatoni in particular stood out. It was made in house and had the kind of texture and quality you notice right away. The Manager (Lance) also stopped by, having been present when I explained what had happened earlier. That kind of awareness and follow-through matters more than people realize. It what separates a place that serves food from a place that understands hospitality. By the time I was finishing dessert, I found myself watching pizzas go out to nearby tables and immediately reconsidering my menu choices for the evening. That's usually a good sign. The host who initially joked about the wait time also came by at the end of my meal. She was polite, thoughtful, and clearly intentional about making sure the experience landed well. I appreciated this gesture. When the bill came, I asked what the total would have been without the discounts and complimentary items. Once I had that number, I tipped Julio the difference. It felt like the only appropriate way to reflect the level of service and generosity I received. I'll be back (for the pizza). Overall: Food (yes) Service (yes) Ambiance (yes)

Once we got seated, our server took our order relatively quickly and we ordered the House made for Kasha with a goat cheese and honey topping, the grilled octopus appetizer, and because we were enjoying our conversation so much we ended up just skipping Wright to dessert and ordering the gooey butter cake. For a light meal, this was relatively satisfactory. Our server said they come to the octopus because we waited so long, so it was nice that the staff was acknowledging that we waited a little bit for our table and we're willing to compensate us. As someone who lives in the river north area, I have actually been here, probably a dozen times, and it's always a good little spot but a little bit pricey for what you're getting. After doing a search on Yelp, I decided we should check out HIDE+SEEK. Ding ding ding! We have a winner folks. We decided to go with the Brunch Party. First let me start off saying that Brunch Party is one plate, one side, and endless mimosas. The entire table participation is required and there is a strict 1.5 hour time limit. That said, Angelique (was our server) was on point during that time period. Our glasses never got pass the half-way mark and a good time was had by all! HIDE+SEEK has a pretty chilled vibe and the décor was cool, a very nice bar area, booths on the east side of the restaurant and tables in the front. I think there was a back area, but can't for sure as I didn't explore as we were seated immediately in our booth. Angelique was very cool. She welcomed us and asked if it was our first time there (it was) and began to explain the menu, focusing on Brunch Party and that everyone at the table had to participate, which we did. For my entrée I got the Short Rib Hash (Sunny side up egg, piquillo pepper, red wine jus, rosemary mornay) and my side was Eggs Your Way (over easy). I got an order of the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes (honey-whipped ricotta, blueberry compote, maple syrup) for the table. Both dishes were very nice. I am a sucker for anything with short rib meat in it and this hit well with me. The pancakes were good, nice and fluffy, and the compote was very good. They weren't as lemony as I have had at other restaurants. The flavor was there, but in a subtle way, almost like an afterthought, but still nice. The pancakes themselves were nice and fluffy, just they way I like them. The Doctor got the cheeseburger and fries, which looked nice. He cleaned his plate so I have to assume it was good. The Queen got the Steak and Eggs. I had a bite of the steak and it was tender and had a nice flavor to it. Overall we had a great time and while it was only an hour and a half, it seemed longer. I will totally come back here again for brunch, but want to check out their happy hour and dinner as well. The menus looks interesting.

She also had no idea about the wine, so my friend just rolled the dice on what she wanted without knowing much about it. She wound up liking it - but more clarity would've been helpful (or even seeking out someone else working there for more info!). Minor environment note: The largest artwork there is a triptych of photographs - three famous women: Princess Diana, Sharon Tate (I think?), and Marilyn Monroe. There is a horizontal band going across where their eyes all line up, and the band replaces their eyes with cartoon eyes, likely of Disney princesses. It is supposed to be quirky but I found it creepy, especially since it featured three famous women who met untimely ends.

The ambiance was perfect for a sunny day with a mild temperature, making it the perfect brunch spot. Once again, I cannot emphasize enough how much Cat made our time at Oakville so special. Thank you, Cat, for being so wonderful at your job and going above and beyond to make my special day even more special. 10/10 would definitely come back!!!

I actually come to Oakville pretty often and every time it's amazing!…read more For this visit, we just did a few apps: fries, tostadas, and spinach dip. All were good but i will say that the dip was missing a little extra flavor (we added the lemon to elevate which helped). The truffle fries dipping sauce is next level & in my opinion a must try for all. The staff is always super welcoming and kind! Plus now that the patio there's not a bad choice for seating inside or out. Additionally, I attached a photo of the tuna poke bowl from a lunch visit. Easily my favorite lunch menu item they offer.

The layers of beef and cheese made it feel like a little party in your mouth. The golden, crispy fries went perfectly with it and really completed the burger. The place was quiet when we went since they just opened, so we were basically the first ones eating there. Right after, it got packed. The staff was super nice too, even gave us a homemade cookie, which was a sweet little extra. Honestly, everything just worked. The burger, the fries, the vibe, and the friendly staff made it a really solid experience. Definitely coming back next time I'm around.

I've lived in Chicago for my entire life and essentially grew up on smash burgers. My love for them…read morecarried over into my adulthood and I've tried just about every "best burger in the city" for the last 15 years. For about a year I've heard people raving and hyping up the burger here like it's the best thing that's touched a flat-top and rested on a bun. When I say that this is easily the most underwhelming, "franchise" burger that I've ever had, I mean it from the very depths of my soul. There is absolutely no love in the burger. It's a hot mess of flavors that only equate to a watered down Big Mac sauce clone on top of patties that were unbelievably mushy like they were frozen and thawed for service. The fries, although crispy, were clearly prepared from frozen (Lamb Weston brand to be specific). You can always tell because they have the same exact consistency, color, and flavor as the ones you can find in a cafeteria, or in the frozen food section. This was easily one of the most disappointing burgers that I've ever had in my life. I don't think this should even scratch the surface of the "best burgers in the city" list. Go here if you set your expectations low and your hunger high.
