Grand Crossing and Avalon Park are two areas on Chicago's South Side that have restaurants that serve up good food, but you don't think of those neighborhoods having good options. I hadn't been back towards South Shore, Grand Crossing, or Avalon Park for a proper sit-down at a restaurant in years. Glad I went to The Lawn Breakfast Bar. I ordered fried green tomatoes and fried chicken sliders. I have had fried green tomatoes at restaurants that I liked, but I haven't had unpretentious fried green tomatoes until coming here. No micro salad on top. No arugula for a garnish. No lobster, crab, or fancy meat on top under a specialty drizzle. Although a nice sauce that had a honey mustard flavor came on the side, the light crust on the tomatoes made them nostalgic. My grandmother used to fry hers lightly and to a crisp like these. On the chicken sliders, these were a hit. The chicken wasn't mostly seasoned crust but rather seasoned chicken. I had scrambled egg and Swiss cheese on the sliders with a light sauce that didn't overpower the sandwiches. And the buns were like buttered rolls. It's a small cafe with nice seating for solo, tables for two, and maybe one or two parties of 4-6. It is not for a party bus brunch crowd. And with the owner/chef being a one-man operation, this is a spot I recommend for chilling while waiting for food to come to the table. read more

It felt warm, welcoming, and inviting. Now, let's get into the food. The grit flight was incredible, but the pot roast one took me by surprise with how good it was. The pancakes, hash browns, and and salmon cakes were all delish. I am very paticular about my egg - I like them soft and runny - and these were about as close as any chef has come to making them the way I do at home. Stopped in after church and I was pleasantly surprised. A quaint spot, perfect for one or a party of two people. Love the artwork and the bright yellow color! Makes you feel welcome. Wow, this restaurant surprised me. The pancakes were absolutely delicious. You don't need syrup on them. They're nice and fluffy, soft, buttery. They melt in your mouth. I ordered the grits flight as well. The pot roast grits were amazing! The ambiance of the place is BYOB, it's a bit hood but that's expected from the location. The service is not the best. Man, after seeing the amazing pictures here, I could not WAIT to sit down and eat! Photos of the food looked phenomenal and this was the spot I wanted to spend my last meal at while visiting Chicago. I arrived at 1:44, restaurant was empty except for one patron picking up his food. Soon as I walked in, I was told I could not dine in and could only order out because they closed soon, at 2:30, 46 full minutes from when I walked in. His reasoning was that "people like to stay a while." Mind you, there was no one actually sitting in eating. I've already checked out of my hotel and it's about to rain AND I Ubered here, so disappointed and frustrated is an understatement. I understand it's a business but being someone on vacation, who wanted to check out this seemingly amazing food restaurant, it's sad when business ruin their own opportunity before it even starts. Their blueberry lemonade taste like kool-aid. I ordered a side of salmon corquettes with remoulade sauce. The salmon corquettes were cooked so long it was hard to break them apart with my fork and the sauce taste like Italian dressing. I had the The Lawn Big Boy which is a ribeye with egg, potatoes, and pancakes,toast, grits, or rice. I had the pancakes. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium well and my eggs to be cooked over medium. My steak was cooked well done and it was tough with no flavor and came out cold. The eggs were seasoned well but cooked over hard and the potatoes were Idaho diced potatoes out of a bag, also seasoned well. My only highlight was the delicious pancakes. Service - 4.5 stars: Amazing, warm, and friendly servers! Ambiance - 4.5 stars: Beautiful aesthetic and vibe inside. The music was fun and not too loud. (A couple songs weren't family-friendly, but overall fine.) We received our food promptly and were checked on throughout our meal. They were out of a few items, and the server had to ask questions about some menu options, but the young men were prompt, responsive, and very courteous! Summary: Attentive, prompt service, delicious food, and amazing ambiance. What more can you ask for? Overall, I highly recommend this spot. It's a hidden gem on Langley, just past 67th. Me & my Wife went there for breakfast today. My Wife ordered the steak, eggs, grits & toast. My order was basically ala carte, since it was'nt on there menu as a meal, but it was catfish, eggs( over easy), hash browns, & toast. The eggs were not easy, matter of fact, they were dirty because the grill was'nt cleaned. The hash browns were out the bag and super salty, and the gave us 1 slice of toast. The catfish was good, my Wife's grits were cold as well as her steak. When I voiced my issue about the eggs, the cook seemed antagonistic about it. Although the place is extremely small.. I went yesterday with the wife and our 3 children and we couldn't even sit together, kids had to sit at a separate table.. Customer service was good only one waiter/server but he did a good job.. and the food was really good.. only problem I had was I asked for a side of salmon croquettes and it's 14.99!!!
