Stopped by here because we were waiting for a show to begin. It adjacent to the Medici Deli so I went through the wrong door initially. This place has a lot of personality: old wood finishes, "graffiti" on every reachable wall and sill. I wanted to follow the other reviews and get the calamari and the chili. The calamari was very good, but has a short shelf life. The chili was nice, but a little toothless. Also had the cubano which was rich in pickles which is always a plus. I guess, since it's claiming a deli in-residence, I'd try the deli sandwich specialities. I don't know when I can get out here next, but it looks like the pizza is supposed to be the next thing we try. read more

Unfortunately, our experience fell short of expectations. We accidentally spilled some water at the table and ended up cleaning it ourselves. Several staff members walked by and noticed, but no one offered assistance until I was finally able to get our server's attention. Our lemonade never arrived, and my meal came with pickles despite specifically requesting none. The food itself was underwhelming. We stopped in because we were already in the area, but it's not somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit again. What a great little spot! I had just flown in to Chicago the day all the Verizon towers went down. It was...a lot. Between finally getting to my friends new place sans phone and going to pick up a mattress from someone in the city, by the time dinner rolled around, I was starving and I was exhausted. Luckily, my freshly relocated friend found Medici and we went over. We kept it cute, a sandwich and a pizza. She didn't have a microwave yet and her stove wasn't working either so leftovers were not something we wanted. It was not only delicious, but so reasonably priced. Medici on 57th was there for us when we had a busy afternoon. We had counter service near the bookstore where we had just shopped. Some people in my party needed coffee or food. Most notably they are known for their pizza. They have wide ranging menu ranging from comfort food, burgers, and sandwiches. I ordered a Cesar salad and a hot chai latte during lunch rush. They have no searing but table's while you wait. It didn't take long for my barista to make my latte. The salad took a little longer than I expected considering it was just chopped lettuce, croutons and some finely grated Parmesan cheese. It came with 2 oz. Cups of salad dressing which was adequate. A Solid institution in Hyde Park. Came here on a nice summer to dine on the rooftop patio. Nice plantings with exposed brick. The hard seats discourage lingering by those with a sensitive tush. :) I had the arrabiata sandwich with a reasonable upcharge for potato salad along with a glass of cab. The sandwich was excellent, featuring capicola ham. The salad was ok. The cab someone should have tasted first as it was plainly from an open bottle that had been allowed to breathe too much or sit in the sun. But that's the Medici for you. Always something. read more

Two experiences here while at U of C Hospital. Last night was delivery and it was a HUGE Home RUN - wow the pizza 1/2 cheese & sausage was terrific, as were the ceasers and chicken fingers (for the victory). Goat cheese looked well terrible but everyone liked it. We also did pick up a few weeks ago for steak sand and chicken ceaser - neither were very good and too much bread. But fries are outstanding (and we're w chicken nuggs). Trends in right way, guess you need to know what to order! Everyone at hospital loves them!! We stopped by Medici prior to an architectural tour in this area. The atmosphere is eclectic with a variety of religious symbols throughout the restaurant. Food was fairly typical American influenced fare. We were there during brunch, so we ordered a variety of both breakfast and lunch items. My companions enjoyed the BLTs and I found my breakfast burrito to be a very healthy size. My bloody Mary was also much better than expected. Service was a little bit on the slow side and we went long stretches without seeing or interacting with anyone. It is usually bustling but food always arrives quickly. The servers are quite attentive. There are quite a few vegetarian options, though the food tends to be quite greasy on the whole. The desserts here are underrated - I like both the plain and chocolate cheesecake, as well as the cookies and milkshakes. The Mexican hot chocolate is delicious too. The quintessential spot for UChicago affiliates! This family owned restaurant has two floors with high ceilings. Our server was absolutely the best and the sweetest!! We were able to be seated despite our party not being entirely present, and she was so patient with explaining to us the menu and letting us take our time in ordering. We got the pesto chicken pasta, the garbage pan pizza (basically for meat lovers and deep dish), calamari, and the Caesar salad. The pesto chicken pasta was so refreshing, I loved it!! The chicken is a dry though, but they're generous with the portions. The garbage pan pizza was so delicious, not too wet, and had SO many toppings! We were SO full by the end, in the best way possible. Ours was the family size, enough to feed a table of 7 with extras! The calamari was fried with a light batter and came with an addicting marinara sauce that I just wanted to spoon into my mouth. We were visiting U Chicago and stopped by Medici for lunch. There was a short wait to be seated. The restaurant looks like an old tavern, and they have interesting wall decor that is eclectic. The appetizers were really good! We scarfed down some onion rings and chili cheese fries. The loaded fries were stand-out amazing! The main lunch orders were a little underwhelming. I really liked my personal pie of veggie pizza, but my hubs thought his roast beef sandwich was "just okay." Our friend got a fried chick sandwich that looked good! I enjoyed the food! The service was fine. Everyone was pleasant. I would come back again. Of note, I got a latte next door at the cafe side of medici while we were waiting to be seated. And the latte was not good. There are two institutions smushed together at "THE MED": the bakery and the restaurant. They're two very different creatures; this review will try to do justice to both. The bakery is excellent. The pastries are reasonably priced and baked fresh daily. Whether sweet or savory, they are by and large DELICIOUS. I've never had their bread, but I see lots of Hyde Parkers coming in for their weekly loaf, so it must be solid. An hour before they close, all baked goods are HALF OFF. This is a great deal if you live in the neighborhood. The bakery also sells deli sandwiches: these, unfortunately, are OVERPRICED and TINY. If you're craving a 'wich, just go down to Subway down by the Metra tracks, honestly... The restaurant is solidly MID. Some of their dishes (like the margherita pizza) are excellent, while others are straight-up TERRIBLE. I recently ordered a steak there, for example, that was COMPLETELY UNSEASONED. I am by no means a good cook, but I KNOW I could have made a much more sumptuous feast at home. When I mentioned this to the staff, I got comped a free desert. I appreciated that, but come on now: if your chef can't cook a steak right, what is going on in the back rooms of "THE MED"? I also think the restaurant charges too much for the quality of their product. The ambiance is nice. Indoors is pleasant and homey, and the second-floor outdoor patio is a real treat during the summer. The servers are friendly! The bakery recently added a street-side seating area that is also very pleasant in the warmer months. Overall, I could take-or-leave the restaurant. The bakery, however, is solid. read more

I've been here a few times but felt the need to go out of my way to leave a review because of the truly exceptional service. Right when we walked in with two young kids, everyone on staff was super friendly and accommodating. Our waiter instantly appeared and asked what he could get going for our 4-year-old, having a delicious quesadilla to the table within minutes to avoid a meltdown. He also read his mind, bringing both a short and long straw for his water (since he inevitably wanted both sizes). Later, our one-year-old threw a strawberry shake across the floor and a team of staff were there to instantly clean it up and assure us it was ok. This could've easily been a disaster meal but the staff went above and beyond to make sure it was a happy memory for us. The food was also great. Thank you! read more

What a great place ! They pretty much have everything! I appreciate their separation of take out and eat in. Such super friendly service. I love their lattes! We often get take out. Their turkey sandwich on Asiago bread is delicious. I also enjoy their quesadillas. My husband likes the arribiata Their fries do decently well from the restaurant to our home particularly the wedges. That surprised me. Nice staff, food was ok. I had a chopped salad I was really excited to eat but it fell flat for me. There was barely any chicken and bacon in it. Few of the other toppings aside from the lettuce. It was served with bread on the side with two very small pieces of bread. There is only about 3 or 4 standing tables inside with no chairs. On Dec 3rd : I had a very disappointing experience at Medici. During my visit (takeout) , I was served a burger that had multiple hairs throughout it. Naturally, this was incredibly off-putting and unacceptable. When I brought this to the attention of the staff, I expected a professional and empathetic response. Instead, the short, female manager on duty displayed a terrible attitude and outright refused to honor a reasonable request for compensation or to have the meal comped after we had sent an email per request of the employee on duty. Her dismissive demeanor and lack of accountability only added to the frustration. A restaurant should prioritize customer satisfaction and proper hygiene standards, but this experience showed a lack of both. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND this place to anyone unless significant improvements are made to both their food handling and customer service practices. Incredibly disgusting. read more
