Soula, the owner, is a stylish petite woman of little words. Lady is a no-nonsense hair artist. I called early one holiday morning and she set me up with an afternoon appointment right straight. I wouldn't say Soula is the warmest personality. She's kind of aloof and wispy - comes off as a seasoned practitioner who's seen and heard it all before. She asked all the right questions to give me a 'good' haircut that is growing in nicely. The haircut was like a dialogue. She queried; I answered; she responded with her scissors. The salon is tiny. Housed in the first floor of a Davis Square three-decker, you can get a peek at the space through what would normally be the living room bay window. Maria of Salonika has solved all my hair woes!!!! I went in with long, straight, dry, brittle and bulky hair. And you could actually see the lines of my layers. (not cute!) By the time I was done, my head was half the size as when I walked in, there were no lines, and I felt like a new person. Maria was great! We sat and studied my hair for a minute to figure out what to do with it... we tossed around a few ideas and then she went to work. She explained everything she was doing and why she was doing it while she cut away. Also, she pointed out to me that I have a tendency to run my hands through my hair, and thats why it gets so oily! She was also very sweet and we had a nice little chat. Now I have fun and funky hair AND a new hair stylist! And I didn't even have to shell out astronomical $$$. Price was very average. read more

I have been going here for about 2 years now and Soula is definitely the best hairdresser I have found in Boston. She asks a ton of questions before cutting to make sure that she knows exactly what I want and I have never been disappointed. I've been here three times now so I can safely say you will get a good haircut here. I have a lot of straight fine hair and I've had a tough time finding salons that can give me a good haircut. To add to the difficulty, I don't like to use products and I need a haircut that will look good to go with no effort. Soula uses a razor on my hair and apparently, that is the best technique for me. I went for my first appointment with Maria at Salonika. Before going in, I was a bit hesitant. So many stylists have no idea what do to with long hair on a man. My hair was down to almost mid-back but I wanted to try something different - perhaps shoulder length and ... not sure what. Maria listened to my ideas, suggested some of her own, then got to work after actually listening to my feedback. She did something neat with "long layers" and subtly framing my face. My hair once again has a healthy wave and looks better than it has in a long time! I highly recommend Maria and Salonika. The only downside is that they website appears to be off line. read more

I have huge, curly, thick, dark hair which for some reason I was always afraid of cutting. I had gotten a trim here and there, but I decided I wanted to go really short, which I hadn't done since I was 6 years old (I'm 29). I had read good reviews for Salonika and decided I would try them out. I came on time for my appointment, but the sister I was scheduled with took one look at my hair and advised me to wait for her sister, since her sister was better at curly hair. I didn't mind waiting, and I picked out a doo from one of the magazines. The sister who cut my hair was great! I felt like a new person and was SO glad I had done it! She made me look amazing, like a new person! Months later I am still super happy with the cut. I will definitely go back for touch ups. I spent about $80 including the tip (and I'm the kind of person who buys clothes at the Goodwill), but she cut off a LOT of hair and I felt and looked great, so it was worth it! GREAT salon, and very nice people. Two sisters, Soula and Angie, serve as the primary stylists, with sometimes help from other folks. It's a locally owned, non-corporate, family type of business, but quite chic and professional. Their clients are very loyal, I see the same folks there again and again. They service both men and women. I am a guy, and Soula has been cutting my hair for about 4 years now. I wouldn't let anyone else cut it at this point. They also cut our baby girl's hair for the first time (though they don't specialize in kids, they do a great job with them). My wife gets her hair colored and cut by Angie, and loves her. I made an appointment with Soula after reading the great reviews here. I was full of hope that she'd be able to cut my wavy hair to perfection. Upon entering the salon, not one person turned to say hello; the two hairdressers in the front (one of which turned out to be Soula) just stared at me and didn't even offer a "hello" or "I'll be right with you". In this uncomfortable silence, I sat down to wait. I'm not a big fan of bringing a picture to a salon, but thought that since this was my first time with Soula, I'd offer a pic of what I was looking for...nothing drastically different from my current style, just a bit of a change. She cut my hair in about 20 minutes...faster than it has ever been done...without precision and definitely without any personality or humor in her demeanor. I wanted to jump out of the chair. Upon seeing the final result, I wish I had followed my instinct and jumped! My beautiful wavy hair had been blow-dried into a wild mess that stood out about 5 inches from my head. Fortunately, I had a hat with me and was able to jam it over the mess as I headed out the door. I would **not** recommend this salon or this stylist to anyone. The mood was unfriendly and the stylist definitely did not have the skills. My search now commences to find someone to fix the mess she "designed". read more

Overall, I am very disappointed with my experience with this salon and would not recommend it to others. I just moved to the area and used the Yelp reviews to find a new salon. I have curly/wavy hair, and I am always wary of finding new stylists since I have had some seriously bad "triangle" haircuts in my life (anyone with curly hair knows how terrible this can be). I checked all the reviews on this site, and I chose Salonika, scheduling an appointment with Soula, the owner. From the moment I arrived, she was relatively curt with me and while she seemed to listen to my requests for my haircut, she didn't actually follow them - at all. I had even shown her a photo of a previous haircut I had that I liked. I asked not to lose too much length and ended up with hair so short that I can't even get it in a ponytail. Even worse, I had to make two visits to the salon to get a marginally decent haircut. The first haircut was cut poorly and choppily with blunt, unfinished-looking layers. To make matters worse, one side of my hair was cut in a completely different style and length than the other. I called to have my cut fixed and at least the receptionist was great about scheduling me for another appointment. When I returned, Soula was borderline rude and confrontational when I explained my dissatisfaction with the style - if I'm the customer, I expect to be treated better than that. She fixed my haircut in the end, but it's still nowhere near one of the better cuts I've had and I will definitely be on the lookout for a new salon once my hair grows out. Perhaps the other stylists are better but I will never go back to this place. read more

Soula is fabulous. Felt like she really got it when I wanted a slightly unusual new cut, took time to bring out photos and talk through ideas she had for adapting my hair to the cut. She was especially good at making the style bring out my best features, both my thick wavy back hair and my facial characteristics. I love the ambiance, the whole two-sister family vibe and the cost of an okay cut. However I would say having been here a few times that at least when it comes to my hair I always leave with an uneven haircut. Soula sort of styles your hair as she cuts it which makes for an uneven cut and it just is simply not as precise or careful as she should be (even after telling her to redo parts and noticing one side not exactly like the other). I would say she is actually better than her sister and both are incredibly personable but still not good enough as a stylist for me. read more

I was initially very excited to try out Salonika since I had heard great reviews and it seemed less intimidating than salons in Boston. Boy do I wish I had taken the T ride into town; I walked out of there looking like David Bowie from the labyrinth. I have very healthy, straight, long, easy to manage hair. I've never needed to use product or blow dry it unless it is subzero (which I guess happens often around here, but moving on...). I explained to Soula that I wanted an inch taken off the bottom and that I was growing out my chin length bangs and only wanted a tiny trim. Without even touching my hair, she immediately said "You have Asian hair. You should get a razor cut, all people in Asia get razor cuts". I tried to explain to her that my hair is very thin and that though I am part Asian, my hair texture is European. She reassured me that a razor cut was best. Being open to experimentation and not knowing any better, I reluctantly agreed, reiterating that I didn't want too much cut off. 20 min later my hair was all over the place, completely lop sided, and my bangs, my lovely bangs, barely touched my eyebrows. It was so over textured that my hair looked like an upside-down triangle. I think Soula realized how terrible it looked because then she used tons of hairspray to matte the hair down. When I walked out my hair felt crunchy and I couldn't move my hand through it. Afterwards she coldly expressed that it looked "great" and charged me for the cut. I have no idea how this woman confused one inch for 5, but I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. read more

Returned for a cut and it was even better this time! I came back to new york city to get compliments all over the freakin place on my stylish, badass haircut. it's growing out pretty nicely too. I walked in here straight from the T with my work scrubs on and my boots all snowy and wet asking for my bangs to be trimmed. I'm not sure who it was that cut my hair (if anyone knows please let me know/comment), she was blond and there late by herself. Count me in as a fan! Turns out I had gone to Salonika more than 10 years ago at its old location, but was not a client of Soula's. I read the reviews here with interest - I have to say, I understand why some people might interpret her professionalism for coldness, but I had a fabulous time with Soula. She is not a bubbly, smiley personality and certainly starts off all business, but we ended up talking and laughing the whole time once she got started. And, more importantly, she gave me the best color (full foil and root color) and cut I've had in a very long time at a very reasonable price. Will definitely go back. My experience here was great. I had been recommended by a friend after having several mediocre and frustrating cuts elsewhere where people don't listen (or worse, pretend to listen and then follow their own thoughts and inspirations). I had my hair cut by Soula, the owner of the salon, who took time to listen to what I was looking for and what mistakes others had made in the past. She then went on to do exactly what I asked. This was the first time in about a year I'd left content with the cut i'd received. About a week or two later there was a section I wanted cleaned up, so I called and Soula did it free of charge. Overall, great experience. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because too many yelpers only do extremes. Once I'm sure this is the best place ever, I'll up it to 5. read more

After having stopped 5 random girls with cute, naturally curly hair that was cut in a funky, no-nonsense fashion in and around Harvard Square and asking them where they got there hair done THREE of them said, " You must go to Soula, at Salonika, she is a goddess of curly hair styling". I am happy to report, that, yes, she rather is. I have since sent my husband and two daughters to Soula and her sister Angela and we all love love love them. Given, I am pretty lax about hair, and I only cut it once or twice a year, but the mark of a good cut is in how it grows out, and 3 months into my new do' I am still very happy. I went to Soula for a few haircuts. Got a basic cute cut once but she totally botched another cut. I showed her a picture of a cute bob and the cut I got was so terrible I cried (I haven't cried over a haircut since high school). It was nothing like a bob - short, shaggy, with awful spiky bangs. Hair color horror? Go visit Angela and do yourself a favor! Angela is the best color stylist in the Boston/Somerville/Cambridge area. She and her sister helped me pick the color and it really turned out well. She will also do a wash for the tips after your hair has grown out. The price is affordable. Highly recommended! read more

I first went to Salonika because my stylist Maria moved there. I love this little spot in Davis sq. Everyone who works there seems very nice. It's a nice, clean, well-lit, modern space. Maria is great! I'm a creature of habit and usually just stick with a wash, cut and blow dry (very reasonably priced) and Maria always does a great job, and has given me new and great hair styles. As a person with frizzy coarse hair that is also very thick, I am very skeptical about anyone who cuts my hair, which leads to very infrequent hair cuts. I met someone else with hair just like mine, and they recommended Soula. When it came time to cut my hair, I called Soula. She was very nice and has a flexible schedule. When I went to see her in Davis Square, I told her basically that I wanted something I could wear curly or straight, wanted my hair thinned, and simply styled. I have two children and very little time to style my hair most days. She created a cut that was so manageable and efficient that it is now December, and my hair is just now showing signs of needing a trim. She is the first person that I have met without my hair type that is able to actually cut and style my hair. I highly recommend her. read more

WON'T GO THERE AGAIN!!! I showed angela a picture of the hairstyle I wanted and picked out my colors and then she got her sister, who also owns the place, to ompletely talk me out of the colors. The result, 100% departure from what I wanted. For $175 in Somerville I should be dancing in the streets. Instead I'm asking everyone I know for a place that will be able to fix this a do what I want. I wanted light red shaggy hair. I got a chin legnth bob that is uneven on both sides and dark burgundy auburn. If you want a hair stylist who will not listen to you, and not look at what your showing here then go there. If you want what you want and you want something cute and trendy, this is NOT the place to go. read more

I would not recommend this salon. When I came in for my appt, the stylist (i forget her name), was on the phone for a good twenty minutes with some personal business and made me wait. She did apologize and I tried to keep an open mind but when she cut my hair it was absolutely not what I asked for. I just wanted it trimmed with subtle layers and instead of layering it like I'm used to, she used some type of scissor brush that totally thinnned out my hair. I have to preface this by saying that I am a hairdresser's nightmare. I ignore it, don't keep up with color or cuts and never know what I want done. I've been looking for a new stylist for a while, had a random day off and they happened to have an opening. Even called me to let me know I could come in earlier, which worked out great. Soula was friendly without being over the top or fake, which I can't stand. She didn't feel the need to chat just to fill silence. Instead of just asking what I wanted done, when she realized I didn't have a plan, she gave me choices to shape my answers, and I ended up with exactly what I wanted, but had no idea how to explain! She also picked a fabulous color. She also didn't scold me for not having gone to a hairdresser for the past 8 months, which is so annoying to me when it does happen. I have been going to Salonika for about 6 years now. Angela and Soula have always been friendly and wonderful. They always manage to work with my schedule and are more than pleasant to be around. They are down to earth and have always made me feel welcome. In fact, I love visiting the salon so much sometimes I just stop by to eat my sandwich on the couch and chat with them. I even turned my husband on to the salon. Angela has always cut and colored my long, thick hair and I don't trust anyone else to do as good a job. I tell her what I want that day, we discuss it, and she does a nice job every time. If I ever move I will have to fly back to Boston for hair maintenance. My husband (and now my daughter) gets his bushy hair cut by Soula and he has never looked better. He used to go to a barber shop, but Soula has made him look infinitely hotter. I have never seen someone who can cut super thick wavy, almost curly hair, so well and make it look hip. My daughter's curly hair also looks very cool for a 2 year old and people always tell me how cute her haircut is. read more
