I'll start by saying that I am very low maintenance when it comes to styling or taking care of my hair. For my entire life, I have had long hair that doesn't require much maintenance at all. So, when I get a haircut it is usually the same trim and I'm used to the less than $20 charge I pay at home in Upstate NY. This time around I needed a haircut badly. I wanted something differently done with my hair and was willing to pay the extra money to have it cut and styled right. I scheduled an appointment at this salon with Liz. The space was very clean and the staff very friendly. I walked in thinking I would get a long bob which would require about a 6 inch cut. Liz showed me what it would potentially look like from the back with a clip, and I'm glad she did because my heart stopped when I saw how short it actually would be. She recommended a different cut that wouldn't be too dramatic for my comfort level. She cut about 4 inches off and did a great job incorporating the long layers while styling it in a way that was different than what I'm used to. Thanks to Liz, I walked out of the salon very happy with the change and not in tears. Maybe one day I'll go shorter, but this was a great first step and extremely positive experience. This review mainly pertains to Alex. She's an esthetician there. I've been getting my brows (and other parts) waxed by this woman for around 6 years or so now. I wouldn't go to anyone else! I live in Cambridge and work near Huntington & Mass Ave. but I travel to the Financial District to see Alex. Reasons why Alex is the best: 1. Brows look perfect every time. 2. She chats you up and remembers the things you have in common and lots of details about your life. 3. She comes to see my shows! Alex loves theatre so we talk about the local theatre scene and shows in general. 4. She gives me hugs on days I'm feeling down. Also, when I came in for the first time after a few years away on the west coast. 5. You can ask Alex her opinion on hair- and hair removal-related issues and she'll always give you an honest answer. I totally trust her. 6. Did I mention my brows are perfect every time I leave? Honestly, "Stayin' Alive" is playing when I leave the shop and walk down the street. I always feel like a million bucks. I'm ALWAYS a little nervous about a) trying new places and b) changing my hair completely... but Advantage Hair Salon helped ease both of those nerves. I had been scoping out the yelp reviews for the past few days trying to figure out where I could go change up my hair style for the summer during my lunch break. I settled on Advantage due to the reviews, price, location, and that they allowed walks-ins. As soon as I arrived, the receptionist greeted me with a smile, and introduced me to Liz who would be cutting my hair. While we waited for the shampoo station to open up, I showed her a picture of what I wanted, and she played around with my hair asking further questions on what I wanted. Once the shampoo station was open [only waited a couple minutes] we proceeded to wash/shampoo/quick head massage/ and condition my hair. This is always one of my favorite parts, and its included in the overall price [$50]. Then it was to the cutting chair.... Liz proceed to get right in and started, and instead of just going too short right off, would ask every few inches to make sure it was the length I wanted, or if I wanted it shorter... I was cutting off 5+ inches, so this was reassuring. My main concern was being able to still pull my hair into a pony tail, another detail she continued to check throughout the haircut. [I was having her cut/style in a long bob, like Jennifer Aniston's recent cut] One major detail I loved is that she really looked at the style I was going for, down to the edges of my hair. She used the razor cutter to get the edges just right, and added some volume to my pretty thin hair, which I loved. Once the cut was complete she styled it exactly like the picture, leaving me completely satisfied and happy. Going from LONG hair to a SHORT hair style, let alone a style I've never had, I was ecstatic with the results and will definitely return for future hair-cuts. read more

This was my first time with a wax. You know, THAT kind of waxing. So naturally I was nervous, shy, embarrassed and worried! I read the reviews on this place and heard Alex was a pro. And thank god I listened. I felt at ease even before I stepped in the front door. They saw me same day and Alex instantly put me at ease. She distracted me from the painful parts, was a great conversationalist and made the whole experience and extremely positive one. YAY!! I found a great waxing place in a super convenient location!!! And I didn't have to wait 2 months for an appt?! LOVE IT. I made a next day appointment after reading all the great reviews for Alex. She immediately made sure I was comfortable, and told me I could stop at any time, and to let her know if I need a break, so niceee. She really took her time, I used to go to Karen's, and I always felt rushed because she always had another appt. booked immediately after and they were always already there. Alex did small pieces at a time, which helped with the pain, ALOT. We talked the whole time about life and she made me forget I was in small amounts of pain with every rip. The best part...she used tweezers to get the ones that resisted the wax, then we went over some spots again...THEN she told me to check and make sure I was happy. When does this ever happen??...NOW IT DOES. SO SO happy I found this place. Its average priced like any other place you go in Boston (that isnt some sketch hole). This review is solely for Alex and her amazing waxing skills. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to bite the bullet and get my first waxing...down there. I researched what to expect, the pain, after effects, etc. What I didn't expect is how pleasant (maybe pleasant isn't the right word?) the experience was. Was it pain free? Of course not. But Alex is so wonderful that she chats and distracts you so it doesn't seem as painful as it actually is. I will definitely be returning to see Alex for my waxing needs. read more

Alex, this one's for you! I have only visited Advantage to see Alex, so I can only comment on the waxing. To say she's the BEST is an understatement. The salon is right by my office so when I got a recommendation from a friend to go see her it was a done deal. She actually said "OMG, GO SEE ALEX. I heart her, tell her I sent you, she's the best!" So that's what I did. Since moving to Boston, I have only, and will only go see Alex for waxing. My brows look amazing every time I walk out. She does a consultation to make sure you're getting what you want, and somehow makes it relatively painless...even places you KNOW should hurt. So I used Yelp to find this place...it's only fair I add my own review now. I've been to see Stacey Z. 2x now and am so happy with my haircuts! Hair Advantage is small little place located in the Financial District which makes it awesome for me to pop in at lunch and get all pretty. I've was left hanging when my old stylist moved out of state. I've gone to several other salons (and paid more) and just been like, meh. No more. Stacey listens to what I want and I come out with lovely long layers and hair smelling fabulous. (Moroccan Oil products, yum!) It's an efficient, no frills place and guess what? I love it. Before moving to Boston 4 years ago, I was fortunate enough to only have 2 different (and great) hair stylists in the previous 14 years. Despite having another 2 fantastic hair stylists while in Boston across multiple Aveda salons, they had a lot of drama surrounding them and their respective salons. I had to find another place pronto this past winter, and relied on Yelp reviews to do so. I'm glad I did, because Stacey (and her numerous glowing recommendations here) at Advantage Hair Stylist has been awesome. The first time I came for a wash and cut was this past December when the entire city shut down early due to the impending snowstorm. I had a 3pm appointment, and she made no stink about me being the last one in before they shut down early. Most of the time, I let the stylist decide what to do with my hair, and I'm glad I've put my trust in Stacey doing so. She doesn't screw around, getting me in and out of the chair in less than 30 minutes (not to say I don't mind a longer cut and chat). $28 is very reasonable for such high quality, especially after shelling out $45-$50 at Aveda. Make sure to bring cash to tip accordingly, as they do not do CC/Debit Card tips. Bottom line, for men and women, Stacey is a can't-miss! read more

I started going to Alex because she had availability and I needed a brazilian that day. A few months later, I am still going to her each month because I find that I have way less irritation than I did with my old person (who I still love) who used traditional strip wax only. Alex uses hard wax, which is better for sensitive areas. She was quick but thorough, friendly and professional. The next time I came in, I wasn't fully "ready" for a brazilian but she waxed what was there and only charged me half. I would've paid full price but I appreciated her fairness. I would recommend Alex to anyone who lives or works close to the downtown area...she's great! I almost welcome the days when I spend the afternoon with my suit pants stuck to my crotch b/c that means I've just had a fantastic wax! FYI - it's nearly impossible to find tend skin in the financial district/downtown area (both equilibrium and advantage no longer have it) but I have found something comprable--and maybe even better--called PFB Vanish that they sell for around the same price at Marc Harris salon on Broad St. read more

I made an appointment with Sandy and told her I wanted to cut off 12inches of my hair to donate it to locks of love. I was so scared because ive always had long hair all my life and was so scared of a dramatic change and she did an amazing job. I came here for a haircut thanks to Groupon. I was a little nervous because when I stepped in, there were several businessmen getting haircuts during their lunch break... but no lady customers. However, my fears were soon allayed by Liz. The questions she asked about my hair showed that she knew what she was doing. She made me feel very comfortable about discussing the haircut with her and kept me in the loop about what she was thinking. She had to deal with the aftermath of a Chinese hairdresser who thinned my hair out way too much, and she did a great job. She did spend a little longer blowdrying my hair than I am used to, but I really appreciated her attention to detail. Thanks Liz! Would definitely come here again even without the Groupon. I went to Advantage based solely on Yelp reviews and was lucky enough to get in, same day, with Alex. Yes, she is as good, if not better than you guys say she is. This was the least painful wax I have ever had in my life and I have VERY sensitive skin. She chatted with me the whole time and made me feel at home. We talked and I laughed, yes LAUGHED, during a Brazilian. She had me check everything out when she was done (20 minutes? unheard of!) to make sure I was pleased. I was heading on vacation and needed to get a wax. So I searched around and found Alex from Advantage Hair Stylist on Yelp, and figured I'd see what all the fuss was about. Well, the fuss is real! I was looking to get a Brazilian (my first) but ended up settling on getting a normal bikini wax after Alex explained to me how I needed to prep for the wax (2+ weeks of growth, right after your cycle ends, etc.) I had no idea there was such a science to getting your lower half waxed! I loved how straight forward she was--"I'm not going to charge you $60 for something that won't come out good. It's not going to be worth it to you, honey!" So we agreed to do a regular bikini. I've had bikini waxes before, and the banter can be hit or miss (it is a bit of an awkward situation) but Alex was kind, warm, and generally interested in learning more about me. She told me all about the shop, asked me about my upcoming wedding, and what I did for week. She was so sweet! I wanted to just keep talking to her. After about 15 minutes, she was done. She even waxed some of my stomach--"I see hair, I wax it. I made an executive decision."--and didn't charge me a cent more. She even let me look at the finished product and plucked some stray hairs with a tweezer. She takes pride in her work! Alex is all about keeping her clientele and making them happy. I would move to Boston permanently for this woman! She is, by far, the most talented wax technician I have ever been to. She always puts the best layers in. Well I followed her when she moved to a salon near South Station. Then I made the mistake of letting a friend do a home job on my hair. My hair had gone flat so I made a last-minute appointment at Advantage as it is super close to my work. I was fortunate enough to get Sandy! Seeing my long hair, Sandy assured me that she liked long hair and would not chop it:) Sandy was super friendly and FAST - shower, cut and blow dry under 40 minutes. She promised that after this cut and blow dry, I would not have to wash my hair for three days -- so I'm holding her to it! Absolutely recommend, especially if you work in the area as you can pop in on your lunch break and come out looking fabulous! My cut was 60 bucks, but keep in mind that my hair was probably mid-back length. read more

I found this place on Yelp after being so fed up with my previous stylist and I can't explain how happy I am with my hair color. They had to cancel my appointment on the day since one of the stylists called in last minute but they immediately booked me with someone else. Luiz was awesome and I was actually glad that I was rebooked. He listened to what I wanted carefully, took notes, thought thoroughly about how to achieve the hair color I wanted and in the end it was exactly what I wanted. Reds are very tricky but he understands the science behind it very well and discusses how the color would look in the light or fade in time. He was very nice and polite. I loved him and his work. Best Brazilian I have ever had! I went to Advantage because I had to re-schedule with my regular lady and she wasn't available until a month later. I yelped Advantage and saw the reviews on Alex. I was not disappointed. She did my Brazilian in a half hour at the most. She took her time, tweezed and made sure I checked for any stragglers. She is so professional and makes sure you feel comfortable. She even gave me a little intro in making her client's feel comfortable. I really don't care. It's a Brazilian there's no comfort in that but she was adamant. She's funny,whitty, fast, detailed. Love love love love love Alex. This review is long overdue... I have been coming to this salon for the past two years to get my hair done among other services. Liz is one of the best hair stylist I've ever had. She always takes her time and I never feel rushed. One of my favorite parts is when she washes my hair. She does this nice scalp massage that is so relaxing and the cut is always the way I want it. She also blow dries my hair beautifully. Not a lot of stylists can blow dry hair and I mean REALLY blow dry hair. My hair always comes out bouncy and silky. Love it! It's also a nice perk to be able to talk her in Spanish !! I highly recommend Liz for any hair service. She's one of those hair stylist that are hard to find. I was new to the Brazilian a month ago, and I just came back from doing another one today. Alex is so nice and friendly, and even though she probably has a ton of customers, she remembered several things we talked about last time. She definitely does not make things awkward at all, and we had a pleasant conversation while she was working. The price is really good for a brazilian, and she uses hard wax, which is a definite plus! I'm not sure about their hair services, but if you're going to wax, definitely do it with Alex! read more
