I know it is time for my hair to be relaxed (applying a chemical solution to my hair that straightens it) when I cannot comb straight through my hair from root to tip or I have excruciating headaches every time I try to comb my hair. Yep...it's time! Walking into the hair salon to get my hair relaxed was like preparing for hair warfare. I came prepared with my phone fully charged (in case I need to abort this hair mission), snacks in my handbag, and fully prepared to sit patiently as the process was activated. My stylist, Naana, took one look at my hair, nodded slowly, and said, "Ok...it's time. Exhale! I told Naana I needed a relaxer. She had previously sent me an emoticon stating, "maybe yes or maybe no." I need my kinks gone...quick, fast and in a hurry! At the point where she said yes, I wanted to do a happy dance. The base and then relaxer had been applied. The big guns were out pointed at my head. No burning...good sign. Then like magic my hair goes from super coily, i.e. kinky to relaxed and straight. Naana rinsed out the relaxer solution and applied conditioner. Then I was off to the dryer for a deep conditioner. Then conditioner was rinsed out, my hair dried and flat ironed. There is nothing like having your hair flat ironed. Sleek. Glossy. Wind ready. I walked out of the salon feeling brand new, like a super model. Ok...maybe not a super model...just a grocery store model. Smile. That confidence lasted two seconds until I walked into Texas humidity. The good news was that the kinks were gone. The bad news was that the curls were back, just not kinky this time. Look forward this process in 8 weeks...Naana is actually an amazing stylist and love get my hair done with her. read more

This is what a stylist named Veronica Vela did to my hair. And my hair was virgin before she touched it. It cost me 500$ to get it fixed. She is a horrible stylist, did not follow anything I asked for and did whatever she wanted to my hair. She lightened the base of my hair when I asked her not do that by my roots or bleach them. And she had no reason to lighten my base since I asked her for a balyage. She left me with stringy and splotchy work all around my head. The worst stylist I have come across in my life. On top of that I sent her these pictures and she said this was fine. DO NOT GO TO HER. read more

I had been looking for a new stylist that was closer to home, more affordable and someone who could not only handle but master the super thick, kinda curly, really frizzy and obscenely picky beast that is my hair. The review by Yelper Dayna E. led me to Danica Hughes who is a magician with hair. What I loved most about her--in addition to her sweet personalty and talent behind the scissors--is that she wasn't afraid to give me her expert opinion. I've asked too many stylists for their opinion but all I get is, "Whatever you think..." I love that Danica said, this is what we should do and this is why. By the time Danica was done with me, not only did I have healthy, happy hair, but I walked out of the salon feeling like I have known her for ages. Danica does the cutting and her husband Michael does the color. He has been in the business forever and it shows. Getting highlights normally feels like such a chore to me because I hate sitting in a chair for 3 hours. Until now, I have never had someone foil my hair at such a record speed all while telling many "colorful" stories. That being said, I need to place a warning about Michael. While he is a total sweetheart once you start to know him, he can come off as straight-forward, blunt and completely "politically incorrect." He basically says the things that most of us think but don't say out loud. I'm telling you this because I think he is wonderful at what he does and I wouldn't want anyone to write him off before they get to know him or see his talent. I have extremely curly hair. My nationality is Puerto Rican so if you are familiar with the kind of curly I'm talking about then you understand that frizzy, unmanageable curls is an understatement. I read here that Danika was amazing with curly hair so I decided to give her a shot. Normally when I let down my mane stylists shutter at the site of my frizz in all it's glory! Most of the time they even tag team to try and tame the beast. Except for Danika. She saw and conquered my curls. My hair was cut and styled, curly, to perfection. I needed some TLC for my curls badly so turned to Yelp for their reviews. I selected Danica Hughes. She is a delightful person with a thorough knowledge of how curly hair differs from straight hair. She helped me decide on length and style. She made good suggestions and since she's the professional, I allowed her to see her vision. I am so glad I did because even though she didn't cut more than 2 inches off my length, my hair feels and looks so much healthier than it did when I walked in. She gave me nicer layers and showed me tricks of the trade on how I could train my hair to curl all over.. I have several areas that were just plain straight. I am going to see Michael next week for heavy highlights as I've been transitioning back to my natural hair. The colorings and bleachings have dried my already dry out terribly. As mentioned before, this isn't one big salon but rather a bunch of individual businesses under one roof; kinda neat. So this review is for The Glowing Diva Massage by Karla Lopez. I came by The Glowing Diva by way of Groupon. My boyfriend purchased a package for my birthday and I was finally able to use it after my final round of exams. After a lot of stress and time spent hunched over books, this full-body massage and mini-facial combo hit the spot. While I informed Karla that my upper back and shoulders needed the most TLC and this is where she focused, it was definitely not to the neglect of the rest of my body. She was attentive and thorough--I was blissfully relaxed. I should also say that if you're more of a newcomer to massages like me, you'll appreciate how professional Karla is. The idea of getting a massage used to seem a little weird to me, but after great experiences like this I'm a believer! And it's an added bonus that her services are completely affordable. Came here to see Mindy (Bless your hair by Mindy). I've seen her twice, once for a hair cut and once for highlights. She did great both times! When I went for my hair cut i didn't really know what I wanted except I knew I wanted short hair. She talked to me about different options that would be good for me. I chose to go with shoulder length with layers and a face frame. I loved the way it turned out! My cut was only $65. Then I went back week later to get highlights. She gave me 2 different colors, both blonde. She was very fast and careful. Didn't skip anything. It turned out so great. I loved the way the colors blended. I got a lot of compliments on both the cut and color of my hair. I loved the pricing of both the cut and color because they were both cheaper than the prices I was paying at a different salon and honestly Mindy did a WAY better job. She's also fun to talk to so no awkward conversations. She'll definitely be my new permanent stylist! read more
