    Wally's Automotive and Repair

It has been over 4 years since I last reviewed Wally's Automotive and Repair and since then I've…read moreused his services many more times on my van, car and truck, transmission, brakes, engines, catalytic converter and other issues. He has even helped me sell cars when it has been time to get rid of them. I have a lot of older vehicles which get a lot of mileage and not as good of care as some of them should get thanks to my wife who won't even tell me when she runs low on wiper fluid, or ask the service station attendant to check her oil level, or told me when she's getting close to the mileage on her oil change sticker. Still, Wally has never let me down. He has always fixed my cars right the first time, and saved me a lot of money over dealership prices while giving me better service. There's something else you should know. Wally doesn't work because he needs to. He has already retired and sat at home for a few months, got bored, then opened up his shop again just because he loves to work on cars and loves to help people. From the moment you hear Wally's voice, you'll see that he really undersells himself. He's just not interested in trying to impress anybody. But don't be fooled. Give this guy a chance. Choose him to work on your car and you'll see that he'll do a great job at a fair price and do it right. He's got decades of knowledge and experience. I have yet to see him misdiagnose anything or even be off a little bit. You know how sometimes you take a car in and it turns out there are two or more things wrong that are creating a problem and the mechanic fixes one of them but doesn't catch the others and so the problem goes away for a while but comes right back? For example, a bad battery and a bad alternator. If you put in a new battery, the car is going to run fine for a while, but in short order it dies again with the same problem because the mechanic didn't find out that the alternator needed to be rebuilt or replaced as well. So now you need another battery. This kind of problem has never happened to me with Wally. He's always thorough. Catches everything.

I met Wally by chance when ordering an alternator for my Trailblazer at Advance Auto Parts. I…read moreneeded someone to install it and he said he'd do that day for a very reasonable price. It's was done quickly and lower than he quoted. We got into a cooling issues with the kids car and he did that as well, again excellent work. I'm a history nut and Wally and I have shot the poo on that subject as well when I'm down there. He's a great guy, great wrench and an asset to the community with his personal knowledge about things. I highly recommend Wally if you need work done.

I got better service than I've ever received anywhere! I had gotten stuck over night in Salem due to car issues and had found him in Yelp the next morning. I did have to call many times, but Doc is a husband and wife operation, so they are busy. However, he called me back and fit me into his schedule, problem solved my bent hood and pushed-in front of my car, and gave me super helpful advice on topping the oil in my very old car. My dad had followed me out to Doc's garage because I wasn't sure my car would make it, and we listened to what Doc was telling me. Dad said I had received such great service and was fortunate to have such an experienced mechanic take the time to explain what was going on with my car. I'm a little embarrassed to say, I didn't know that many old cars need to be topped with oil between the 3,000 miles mark. That explained the sound my car was making and how it felt driving. Though I was embarrassed, I never felt talked down to by Doc. (Ladies, take your car here!) The other problem with my car was that I had gotten into a fender bender on my way to Salem and was unable to unlatch my hood. We left Doc's for an hour and came back after receiving his call. Doc had somehow managed to smooth the hood and get it to unlatch and latch again. This was amazing because the problem wasn't just with my hood, but with the whole front of my car. It had been pushed in 3 or more inches pinching the radiator. What Doc charged for his work was so reasonable, I was dismayed. I would drive from Portland to Keizer to have Doc work on my car. He was great.

I was able to take my car in, in the morning, and have it done in a few hours. My daughter recently needed brakes on her VW Rabbit, and I took her car to Doc Brown's and had her brakes replaced. Again, the brakes were done quickly, and at a very reasonable price. If you're looking for an honest, dependable, and knowledgeable auto tech, this is the place to go. Just be aware that this isn't like a regular garage or dealer's waiting room. There's nowhere to sit and wait for your car, so you'll have to have someone pick you up and then take you back for your car when it's finished. But I'll take a little inconvenience for good, competent work and price anytime.
