this is a fun little pizza spot, definitely not fancy and very casual but has a nice chill beachy vibe to it. the waiter was very nice and we all enjoyed the salads/garlic knots. we ordered two pies, and one came out about 20 minutes before the other. my grandparents got a little impatient with this and asked the staff what was going on, to which they let us know that they'd made a pizza wrong so they had to remake the whole thing. this ended up prolonging the wait, and I do wish they'd given us the heads up about it, as it wouldve given my grandparents a chance to be more patient. other than that, the pizza was delicious and we really enjoyed! read more

We ordered carry out and the pizza was excellent. The dough was a pleasant and the toppings were fresh. It is in a nondescript strip shopping center and the lack of ambiance is more than made up for with the quality of the food. It was our last night at our rental house and we wanted a change of pace from seafood. Stopped in Sal's and ordered a mushroom pie and a margherita pie. Usually I go for a pepperoni or sausage but I decided the change would be good. I was not disappointed, the basil was fresh and very aromatic which enhanced the experience even more. The crust was thin and crispy like it should be. The sauce was unbelievable, someone's mom is in the kitchen with her secret sauce for sure. The waitress was great, seated us as soon as she cleared the table. The place is small with only a few tables but I suspect they do a lot of take out because of where they are at. Definitely a New York feel in the best way possible. I'm from NY and this pizza was terrible. The crust was soggy and flavorless. We felt like the entire thing was not seasoned whatsoever. The pizza was super greasy and they charge a lot for each topping you add. Also, if you order after a certain time they have a menu that is limited to pizza or wings only which they don't disclose on their website. Expensive and disappointing. read more

Recently wanted to get pizza, but our "regular" places were closed so thought we'd give Sal's a try. What a find! This is a classic joint, which is exactly what you'd find in NY - and this is a good thing. The pizza did not disappoint. The crust had a great chew to it, thin and crispy, and generous toppings. We saw others there that got the lasagna or baked spaghetti and based on their reactions it was as good as it looked. The only disappointment is that we didn't try Sal's before now. We ate at Sal's tonight. They do not have a lot of seating space but accommodated our group for our son's 16th birthday with no hesitation. I was so impressed with their professionalism as they answered phone orders and walk ins with estimated wait times. It is a Sunday and a huge cottage turnover day - pizza and subs are no brainers for tourists and they non-apologetically gave honest answers. I loved this! The atmosphere made me so happy with tons of Frank Sinatra music. We ordered wings, garlic knots, a 18 inch pepperoni pizza and a deluxe. Everyone was pleased with the tastes. Wasn't a fan. For starters, the online ordering system is a joke. While they did accept our order over the phone, it wasn't the same. We were told 40 minutes. Which ended up being 70. The pizza was...meh. Yeah, it's pizza. But, it's not pizza you'd purposefully order again with other options available. On a soggy night, Fat Man Reviews stopped into Sal's New York Pizza in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Sal's is New York style pizza joint serving pies, beer and pasta dishes. We started with the Specialty Topped Tots - classic. This comes with bacon, cheese, House made ranch, and we added jalapeños. The tots are out of a bag, but they were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The bacon is crispy and chewy and adds texture. The melted cheese was great, and the jalapeños added a kick of spice. The ranch was creamy, thick and great with this dish. We ordered a half Pepperoni and half Sausage pizza. This has a hand tossed crust, it 2as thin and crispy, and I believe cooked in a wood-fire or brick oven. The pepperoni was high quality, thin and had a nice flavor. The sausage was ground with a light fennel flavor that wasn't overpowering. My one issue is I would have like a few more toppings per slice, especially the sausage. The sauce was traditional tasting marinara that was flavorful but subtle and the cheese was melted well. I think the crust to sauce and cheese ratio was about spot on. Sal's makes their pizza dough in house, and they also offer beer and wine. They have a large menu that includes salads, sandwiches and desserts. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The Fat Man says that Sal's New York Pizza is Fat Man Approved with 2 chins. read more

I was very surprised to find quite an abundance of NY Style pizzerias in the area. NY style is a favorite of mine and had to try at least 1 pizzeria while visiting the area. So it was a rainy and windy evening and I figured why go out in the messy weather and they deliver to my location so I placed a order for delivery. So the reviews indicated their chicken parmigiana grinder and caprese salad was really good. So I had to order them, as well as a Margherita pizza and a Italian sausage/mushrooms pizza. Food arrived as promised in the estimated time frame. Caprese salad was really good The chicken parmigiana grinder was a huge disappointment. The chicken was pounded or sliced so thin that the bread crumb coating was pretty much what you really get to bite down on besides the bread itself. The chicken it self was the thickness of a slice of cheese on a sandwich. But the pizza is what really matters to me and the 2 pies I ordered was on the money. I'm so surprised that the pie it self weighted nothing In the box and I ordered the large pie. And you almost think they forgot the pie inside the box. But 3 slices in I'm getting full and the 4th slice was a fight to the end. All said and done, I still think this pizzeria is solid and will order again. read more

My husband and I both really enjoyed our delivery order from Sal's. I got a caprese salad, and was amazed at how big it was. A bed of soft greens and halved grape tomatoes was topped with shingled slices of fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, accompanied by balsamic dressing. The dressing was very good, and the salad itself was big enough to be a whole meal. We also got a large pizza. We were impressed by how cheesy the pizza was! The crust and sauce were good, but the star was the cheese. We ate pizza leftovers the next day driving home from vacation, and it was great eaten cold out of the box too! Food was delicious. We ordered the meatball appetizer. The order comes with 3 meatballs covered in red sauce with melted mozzarella... yum! To make it even better it came with soft white bread and your choice of butter or oil and parsley. Then we had a NY style pizza...cooked perfectly with ooey gooey cheese and a crisp, chewy crust. The table next to us ordered a chicken Cesar salad that looked fantastic... huge with thinly slice chicken breast on top... I wish we had ordered it!! The wait staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant has a decent size bar, ample seating, they also have desserts, sandwiches, entrees and sell pizza by the slice. We have eaten at many places in Kill Devil Hills that have been ok but Sal's is delish and we recommend eating here!! Plus they were playing music from the 80's... We showed up here because of a mishap at slice with the manager actually getting a huge attitude with us over food we never got. So we popped across the street to Sal's and they had JUST opened. We enjoyed two beers and two slices of HOT fresh pizza before we headed out of OBX. I mean it was done in a couple of mins! One of the employees talked to us in between phone call orders coming in. They were BUSY with call-ins for sure (the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend) but still made us feel VERY welcome and a priority. Can't say the same for slice (to be fair we've never felt that way at slice). So Sal's it is for all of our pizza and sandwich needs from here on out for us. We've had their pizza before and decided to try their dinner menu. I had the penne vodka and my wife had the eggplant parmigiana. Excellent.

This was our first visit to Sal's after the change in ownership. We liked the old product enough to try again although it needed a little work. It still needs a little work. This was takeout, so as has been true with Dare Devil's and Max's, the pizzas are not baked enough to keep the crust from getting soggy on our short drive (~ one mile) home. The cheese also does not get browned. The cheese on pizzas needs to be baked a little brown, not just melted. It's not nachos. The browning adds a richer, nuttier flavor to the mild cheese. We are Italian sausage fans and always order it. Sal's is link style, sliced. It is weak on the fennel as Ms T could not detect it and I only could by picking a piece of the sausage off and eating it separately. We liked the sauce. It was not sweet and also was not tomato paste. We order either calamata or green olives to add the briny saltiness that they bring. Sal's offers neither. So for us, this is a semi D-I-Y pizza. We bring it home, add calamata olives, broil the cheese and crisp the crust on a griddle. After all that, we still don't have great sausage. I won't say we won't do this again, but there are still a couple of places to try; New York and Pizzazz (not holding much hope, they both look so commercial). We have already ruled out Max's, Slice, Cosmo's and Lucky 12. We may have to forego pizza while staying here, or we might have try Sal's or Dare Devil if we get hungry enough for it. read more
