Stale bread sticks. Chicken wings were tough, small but spicy, like chicken jerky. Pizza was under cooked. All was delivered at room temperature. No napkins and no utensils or plates. I was on the fence between giving Sal's three stars vs. four stars. I get that companies rely on their reviews, it's a pandemic, we've only ordered from here once, etc. But I'm gonna be honest. We ordered a large Greek salad and a large cheese pizza on a Friday night in late March '21. The salad was fantastic and had the typical components like olives, cukes, feta, pepperoncini, as well as a few bonus ingredients like carrots and peppers. Dressing was great. Everything was fresh. Portion size was better than average. We were very happy with it. However, our pizza was underwhelming. To me, NY pizza is floppy and foldable, with oven marks on the bottom, maybe some bubbles in the dough, and some chewiness to the crust. Sal's dough was crispy, almost like a cracker. And if it was "good crispy" I would give them credit. But it wasn't. Everything about the crust was average. And the sauce was average. And the cheese (amount, flavor, etc.) was average. Maybe we didn't order correctly or maybe we got a bad pie? The place looked cool, the people were nice, the salad was great, but the pizza was meh. Bottom line, this is not NY pizza. As a NY'er who moved here a few years ago we finally decided to give them a try and were severely disappointed. They drew me in with the possibility of actual garlic knot's and based on that alone I was severely disappointed. Not just rolls like most they had the shape and texture correct, what they were missing was the garlic. We got naked knots with some parmigiana Reggiano melted on top. It was bland and pointless....not to mention highly disappointing. We also ordered wings and found 6 (garlic/herb) drowning in grease and the other six (picante) lacking flavor and texture. I really feel like they barely cooked these wings and when they did the oil was under temperature which made them absorb the oil. In the end, the wings were trash much like the knots. Now on to the part that actually matters, the pizza. Wow, what an abomination, this is in no way NY pizza. This is, at best, bad NJ pizza trying to be NY pizza. Over cooked with a cracker style crust and with cheese/sauce of the lowest quality. Take NY out of your name, this is not even NY Sbarro quality, much worse. Note to owner: The food was bad. Being more upset by a few jokes than you are about sending out poor quality is not a virtuous. Small business or not my review won't sink you and I will not be guilted into changing it. The looks of Sals from outside doesn't look like much, however, they are always packed & always have business! Pizza is obviously what they're known for but I'm personally not a pizza person so I got pasta while the rest of my group got pizza. The pasta was good however I had maybe 4 thin pieces of chicken & was not a huge fan of the garlic knots. These are all my preferences but definitely give Sals a try! Staying in OBX this is your pizza spot! Pizza was amazing, we got the large sausage and mushroom. Dough was perfect balance, fresh, toppings where flavorful and plentiful. Nice foldability and not greasy at all. Looking forward to trying all their specialty pizzas. Tater tots where a last second add and wow, crunchy but not dry, yet not greasy. May actually be best tots ever. And what makes this place a solid 5 star restaurant is the fresh next level salad. My wife is a hardcore salad lover, I am take it or leave it. We got both the caprese salad and house salad (see pictures). Caprese came with fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil over flawless spinach, arugula and romaine with an added bonus of cherry tomatoes and red peppers. House was the same salad blend with cucumbers and carrots. All super green and nicely arranged. Order was ready exactly when they said. Service was friendly. Really enjoyed my meal at Sals! We started with the loaded bbq tots, which were unreal. The house made bbq pulled pork is sweet and tangy, and the tots are covered in ooey gooey cheese. We also had a classic Caesar salad which was tasty, and a personal margarita pizza. The owner makes the mozzarella in house and it is delish! We also tried the plain NY style pizza which is a super generous (and tasty) slice. The house made wings are awesome as well- they come a few different ways. We enjoyed the picante wings which are mildly hot, as well as the Vesuvius wings which pack a hot punch! Lastly, the cheesecake was so good! Rich and creamy and complemented well by the strawberry sauce and graham cracker crust. We got the four cheese pizza, a regular pepperoni and cheese with fresh mozzarella, Caprese Salad, Pizza Canes, garlic knots and cannoli . The pizza was just okay. Not what we're used to do it was a change. Not bad just not what we like so I won't knock them there because it wasn't bad. My husband said the pizza canes were really spicy I didn't try as I don't like spicy. He said they were good just very spicy. The cannoli was my favorite part. They were so good. The caprese salad was good I just wasn't crazy on the types of greens used. I think I would have preferred the app. The dressing on it was really good though and the tomatoes were fresh and tasty. read more

During our recent OBX vacation, we decided to order out for pizza due to long lines at some of our normal favorites. After looking for close and convenient, we chose Sal's. Ordering online was easy and quick. I was pleasantly surprised when the pizza I ordered arrived in 25 minutes. After paying and tipping the driver we checked out the pizza and were pleasantly surprised. My wife really loves the "floppy" NY style and was not disappointed. The pizza was hot and perfect. It was large enough for 4 of us with a few slices left over. We enjoyed it so much that later in the week when my grandson and family arrived, we used them again. Leaving 4 stars because we DO like Sals pizza, however, I came here to write about the "Ny Subs" which I would leave no stars for. Absolutely do not get their subs, ESPECIALLY if you're from up north. I was sooo ready for my Italian NY sub with a little oil and vinegar, but as soon as I picked it up and felt the weightlessness of it, I should've known and never took it home. We went back to the hotel just to see that there's was no meat on it. Couple pieces of pepperoni and a couple pieces of salami. That was it. Found this gem after day drinking by the pool at my outerbanks hotel. My inebriated state craved hot cheesy pie and this place delivered and fast. Pizza arrived in under 30 minutes. The food is very good. Pizza is competent, pasta dishes are actually quite good and all big enough for two. If you're looking for delivery/pick up, this place is probably 5-star worthy. If you're looking to eat in, well, don't. That's a 3 star review at best. You'll get served in the same paper trays used for take out. If you order a salad and a pizza, or a soup and a pizza, they will come out together. You see, they clearly don't know how to do dine in, the orders go in the same queue with take out/delivery where you want everything to be done at the same time. If they could figure out how to get some real plates for eat-in, and interleave the orders so its possible to get an app/starter BEFORE the pizza, it would be awesome. read more

This place is amazing! We normally eat BBQ when down south, but having our fill of it we decided on a pizza. Got a Caesar salad too; it was fantastic. Had a hankerin for some pizza, even after having eaten a "seafood combo" at another local joint. It left me wanting more and I saw Sal's. Popped in, the dude at the counter was nice, made some jokes, small talked about the menu and I made a decision. It was just me so I opted for a small. When I sat down to wait, I noticed that he started with fresh dough to make my pie, which was cool. And then he said, "hey man, imma make ya a medium, cool?" Of course I was like, "heck yah!", even though my alone-ness situation had not changed. Set up: I grew up just outside NYC in the 70s. Partner has lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn almost all of her life. Been vacationing in OBX for decades. I don't come for the pizza, which is good because I've never found anything better than 'meh' here. That's changed as of this week. This is it. NY style. Like 'grabbing a slice after seeing J Geils at the Garden' NY style. The Brooklyn pizza snob gal said out loud several times: this pizza is really good. Chicken parm, eggplant parm all tried, all NYC deli worthy. The OBX loaded tots? As one at the table said: OMG these are so dank! (I think that means they're amazing, rest of us thought so anyhow.) Sal's Pizza apparently recently changed ownership, but our family tried them for the first time tonight while vacationing. We were able to be seated immediately and were waited on by very prompt and friendly staff. Our party of eight enjoyed the appetizers - the antipasto and garlic knots if I remember correctly. When the main dishes came out relatively quickly, our reactions were a little more hit-and-miss. One of my family is a vegetarian and tried the spinach and artichoke dip, yet supposedly it was rather poor; blended to a very mushy consistency and relatively tasteless. We aren't exactly pizza connoisseurs, but while half of us shared a margherita and the other a regular cheese and pepperoni, a few of us thought they were kind of bland. I enjoyed my sausage and peppers sub with a slice of regular pizza at least. It was a fine experience for me and I think I came out the most satisfied out of my group. I'd say to experiment a bit outside of the pizza if you're thinking about making Sal's your frequent stop, otherwise you can take a chance to see if their staple suits you. read more
