YOU MUST HAVE RESERVATIONS. We attempted to eat here on a Friday night without a reservation. The hostess informed us that it wasn't possible. We made reservations for the next day and finally made it happen. We ordered pizza, pasta, and sandwiches. Everyone enjoyed their food for the most part. It's nice and clean inside. We live less than 2 miles from Max's so have been there quite a few times. Everything we've ever ordered has come out hot and delicious. The Alfredo sauce is to die for, pizza thin with a good balance of crispy and chewy crust, pasta sauce always yummy. The only thing is that the servers, at least during lunch, spend more time chatting with each other or people at the bar than they do waiting tables so we always have to go to them if we need anything. We have been customers of Max's since before they moved to this location. While we claim we have not found any really great pizza at the outer banks, Max's has been as good as or better than most. (we have not yet tried Madison's). Max's being acceptable and very close to home is generally our choice. It had been a while, actually, but we decided this is what we wanted recently and I have to say, I think it is improved. We had very good quality cheese and plenty of it. The sausage actually had some fennel flavor. We almost always get sausage and olives and forgot to ask if they had Kalamata or green olives, so settled for ordinary black olives. However, we really enjoyed this pizza. Mazes remains our preferred pizza joint in the area. read more

I was kinda bummed out by the mediocrity of this Italian place. First of all, we had to wait for 30 minutes for a table in a seemingly not-so-busy restaurant located in a shopping plaza next to Food Lion. When we did get seated we overheard the table next to us complaining about waiting over 45 minutes at the table for a pizza. 'Ugh', we thought. Luckily our meals came out in a reasonable amount of time. The fried mozzarella was pretty good. The beer was cold, and the service was friendly, but he did seem like he was a bit stressed. I had the chicken parmigiana entree and it was just ok. Not piping hot and the meat was slightly underdone for my liking. The sauce was good, and the pasta was average. For one of the seemingly only Italian restaurants in the area, I had set a higher bar for Max's. I don't think I'd go back though. read more

If you are looking for a Pizza Parlor while on the go or on Vacation , Max's is a good option. A few of the Pizza Places in the Outer Banks claim to be "New York Pizza" or use Fake Italian Business names to attract attention to their Pizza Parlor despite not having a single Italian Worker or Owner. They also have fake vouchers to support their business despite it being disgusting and not authentic. Good news is that Max's is an actual legit Pizza Parlor. They have a nice thin crust with Good Mozzarella and Decent Sauce. The closest thing to New York Pizza you will get on the island. Customer Service is decent along with an actual Italian worker who speaks Italian. 4 out of 5 stars, definitely better Pizza out there but is a good option on the go or while on Vacation. read more

Came to town planning to hit our usual seafood buffet but arrived a little late and decided to leave that for tomorrow. So we headed out about 8pm and ended up at Max's. My sister ordered veal parmigiana while I opted for the chicken parmigiana. Both were fantastic and heaping helpings. I could say the chicken was just a tad overcooked but it would be nitpicking because it truly was just a tad. Not even enough to cost them a star. If this were a ten point scale I would give them a 9.7 or 9.8. Our waitress was attentive and quick on the soda refills. Coming in so late we only had a few other customers so it was a nice quiet dinner, though I suspect at busier times it could be very active. Considering we were on the Outer Banks, the prices were pretty good, especially taking into account the huge portion sizes! read more

This entire experience was absolutely fantastic! The food and service were both amazing. We started with the bruschetta, which was fresh and flavorful. Best I've actually had! For dinner, we enjoyed the Alfredo and the three cheese ravioli--both dishes were perfectly cooked and delicious. To top it all off, we had the triple chocolate cake and the lemon blueberry cheesecake for dessert that we took home because we were so full! Our server even sent us home with plates and silverware because he knew we were traveling Both desserts were heavenly and the perfect end to a great meal. So this is our second visit..... the first was not very succesful. We started with Mozzarella sticks which were homemade and were a 4.5 very nice sauce as well, we also has the cheese garlic bread which was very good and the same sauce which was very tasty. Entrees Spaghetti and meat balls with meat sauce....be careful its a separate charge for each so the above was $23 total which is way over priced in my opinion. The sauce was entirely different than what was used on the appetizers which was great! But on the spaghetti it was not that good..... 2.5 on that plate meatballs were tasty but were not cooked in the sauce which is a BIG no no in the italian world. Sauce was not very good . The white pizza with sausage was a complete winner! We added sausage and the crust was NY perfect! I would gi e it a solid 4. We will go back again but may focus more on the pizza. I placed order at 5:30, after numerous phone calls, to find out why we had not received our delivery, we were told our food was on the way, only to arrive 45 minutes later, now over 2.45 hour wait, which was never mentioned when order was placed. Food was cold and had to be reheated. $70.00 meal and all management kept saying was we are busy. Then sarcastically said sorry they didn't have a helicopter to get it to me faster. All of the food we ordered was above par. Wings, Linguine w/White clam sauce, chicken Alfredo, pasta w/red sauce. The Alfredo was probably one of the best we've had in a while, excellent flavor. The Caesar Salad dressing was overwhelmed with balsamic vinegar, so skip that. It shouldn't have it. Overall the Service and the Food were Great. The only issue we had was that the restaurant itself was hot, like the AC couldn't keep up with the warm temp. It was probably 78degrees, and not very comfortable. We will be back. read more

Update: For the record I worked in a restaurant for years, I do understand having to give the kitchen a break. However, I still feel it was handled poorly since my call/hold time was essentially wasted. I was also being kind by saying we were on hold for 15 minutes because I feel it was longer than this. The order could have been taken and held for the break. -- We loved this place last time we were at OBX. It's good as long as you can get an order in. We were disappointed this time after waiting on hold for at least 15 minutes we were told "we're giving the kitchen a break, call back in 20 mins". We had already waited on hold, couldn't you have taken our order and given it to the kitchen in 20 mins? We ended up giving up. read more

The hubs and I satisfied ALL of my Italian pregnancy cravings and they even sell pizza by the slice so you can get a little bit of everything and save some money! Amazing calamari, bruschetta is to die for, Alfredo was great, penne with very moist great meatballs, and cannolis with fresh strawberry and chocolate chips were the best I've had IN YEARS!! Stopped here and got takeout. We were on vacation and were staying in a hotel. The lasagna was real salty. Spent over $80. I asked for black pepper. Was told they didn't have any to go. Really you couldn't put some in some aluminum foil. After spending $80 they should've went next-door to the dollar tree and got me some pepper. Have tried Max's a couple of times, overall not quite a 4 but awfully close. Max's has the unfortunate situation of being next to Little Caesars and Duck Donuts, the point being their sign just does not stand out...been coming to OBX for years, saw their sign from the road but it never really caught our attention. For a appetizer, the "Crusties" Pizza Rolls are great! Hot, with sauce on the side, cheese, pepperoni, you really can't go wrong. Pizza is solid, comes out hot, lots of toppings, not over sauced, good crust. If you are out looking for dine-in pizza or Italian - give them a try. read more

Even though they advertise delivery and to-go orders, they do not take them. The phone does not route you to a person but just dumps you into a queue which they still do not pick up.. I even drove in to the restaurant to order and then wait, but they refused to take my order. I can't vouch for the food, but unless you are planning to eat there, find another place. read more
