I've road-tripped from Colorado to the Bay Area numerous times, and usually just barely sustain myself at the usual fast food suspects. This time I was determined to get off the beaten path using Yelp as my guide. Half-day 1 was a bit of a fail when I had no cell phone signal through most of western Wyoming, so when I got to Salt Lake City for the night I planned ahead ... my next gas stop was going to be in the environs of Wendover, NV and would be a good time for a late breakfast. The Salt Flats Cafe looked like the most promising of my search results -- a cafe and a Sinclair gas station in one stop? Yeah, I'm all for efficiency when I'm on the road. This is pretty much your last stop before you're assaulted by the neon and cheesy glitz of the casino town after you cross the state line, and I have to say that I prefer the stark, desolate landscape you will find on the Utah side of the border. The cafe was full of Spanish-speaking families when I walked in, with what I'll call ranchero music (Spanish-language country) playing in the background. I was quickly invited to take a seat and offered a basket of tortilla chips, then perused the menu. I could have ordered pancakes or some standard American breakfast plate, but what was the point of that? I opted for scrambled eggs with chorizo, one of my favorite Mexican breakfasts. I was given a choice of hash browns or rice & beans -- again I was all-in for the more authentic rice & beans, and corn tortillas, please. Within minutes a huge plate came out. The chorizo seemed to be the cured variety, not the fresh that turns your eggs all spicy and orange, but was tasty nonetheless. The rice and beans were well-seasoned, too -- not spicy, but flavorful enough to be enjoyed by themselves or combined with the huevos in a tortilla. I thought I was pretty hungry, but barely finished half my plate. A great deal for about $6, and probably just as fast as the Golden Arches. I'd definitely stop in here again. read more

When we pulled in, I was skeptical. When you walk in its obvious the owner isn't putting on any airs. The food is good, the service is friendly, and the cost is really reasonable. Be warned: the salsa is delicious but it will melt a white girl's face off! It's super divey, but it's covered in memorabilia and signed photos. Worth the stop. read more

I love Mexican food. I grew up in AZ and there is nothing more comforting than fresh, cheesy, delicious Mexican food. This place was a huge disappointment. I ordered a chile relleno (my favorite) and received a soggy grease drenched thing that tasted terrible. The steak in the enchiladas was hard and tasted old. I seriously took 3 bites and couldn't even have anymore. I am the youngest of 10 children. My dad made $12/hr until I was 15. I am not a picky or fussy eater. I can ignore dirty walls, dirty windows, and dirty tables. I can even ignore poor service. But I cannot ignore greasy gross food. And that is what I was served here. No beuno. read more

Although the locals refer to it as "The Metro", the actual name is the Salt Flats Cafe. If you're in Wendover, take a break from gambling and casino food. This place is a hidden gem! Worth the visit if you're travelling past. We called in to grab a bite and were pleasantly surprised at how delicious and authentic the food is. The chicken fajitas were awesome. You could taste the smokey char on the capsicum, onion and chicken. The place was constantly busy. The staff were accommodating to two Aussie girls needing advice on the menu. I love out of the way "dives" with incredible food and this place did not disappoint! Exceptional Mexican food in the middle of COVID. Fun pictures of races at the Bonneville Salt Flats (hence the name). First stop in Wendover. Found some good reviews and we were excited to dig in. The place was divey, just like any good joint. Chips came in cold and a day away from full-stale. The salsa was tasty, just too loose for my liking. And I mean loose like tomato soup consistency. I like my salsa right. We both got the special. I think it was called Panchos special. Regardless, it wasn't that shabby. The tostada was pretty good. Beans and rice were like meh. The burrito was la frontera style, nothing screams tasty here. The price was decent though. And that counts for something. 2 meals for under 20$. I feel like that's a good threshold for a decently priced lunch. read more

Perfect little dive off I80. Mexican and American food with a kids menu, and serves breakfast too. Good prices and adds a little local culture to the drive across the salt flats. This place will be a must stop on future drives, just for the salt flat racing pictures on the walls. Take exit 4. No signs exist for the cafe. read more

I came to this restaurant with my husband last week. After 2 Hour drive through the salt flats. We were driving around looking for the restaurant and realized it was kind of like a shock. It had 4 1/2 stars with over 200 reviews. It was not what we were expecting. This is a cash only family owned restaurant. Once we sat down and ordered our food we realize they only excepted cash so I had to run to the store get money out of the ATM and leave my husband there. It's been a really long time since I haven't been able to pay with my debit card at a restaurant. The food came it was mediocre definitely wouldn't come back. Maybe try eating at the casinos or the steakhouse. read more

I cannot understand high marks for this less-than-ordinary Mexican eatery. Service is slow and the food worse. The chili verde platter, while loaded, is bland. The homemade chips are good but the salsa is thinner than water. You have to walk through the kitchen to get to the restrooms. Copper Kettle is much, much better. read more

Some of the most authentic Mexican food I have ever had. Ride For Water is riding our bikes across the country to raise awareness about the global water crisis and the manager was more than happy to host us! Great staff, great service, great food! You will seat yourself and most likely need to grab some menus from the podium. Once the server sees your looking at the menu, they will bring over some chips and salsa. After reading 300+ positive reviews on Yelp I was truly disappointed in this cafe. We were bombarded with many, many flies during the whole time we were there. We sat in the front of the cafe and I could look further into the cafe and see multiple fly strips hanging from the ceiling. The chips and salsa were terrible. Chips were stale and the salsa was liquid with little flavor. I ordered a tostada with ground beef and all the fixings. The ground beef had no seasoning at all. Tostada shell was also stale, the guacamole fair, it was probably the worst tostada I ever have had. So between swatting flies and eating a terrible tostada then they only take cash. I noticed another traveling couple come in after us, who my guess read the same positive review and were disappointed too as they swatted flies as well. read more

Excellent Mexican restaurant with a large menu. I've eaten there numerous times and I've never had a bad selection off the menu. All the entrées are outstanding.
