My husband and I had the pleasure of dining at Salt on one of my work layovers. There aren't enough positive things to say about BOTH the service and the food. Well I am not sure what to say. The premise of the restaurant is being able to add different types of salt to your food which come out on a tray. Because of this concept the food is left deliberately under seasoned and bland when served. The ravioli was really good, but the portions are very small and the location is in a shady part of town. For some reason they choose to serve canned beer without providing a glass. I'm not a college student so did not understand the canned beer being dropped on my table. If you want much better food go to House Wine about a mile away that has the same owners and much much better food. read more

I came here with a friend. We sat at the bar until we could be seated. They have a really cool open-kitchen layout, and we chose to sit in that area. It's a super classy restaurant. It's no secret that there is a lot of good food in the Rio Grande Valley. So to say I had my best meal here is a big deal because I eat so well here. We were going to get the 30-day aged New York strip but they ran out right before we ordered. Bummer! But then I made the good decision of ordering the butternut squash ravioli and a cucumber sip. I didn't think I was especially hungry but I didn't leave a bite left of the ravioli. It was that good. And the cucumber sip was incredibly refreshing to be so boozy. Having just come off of a four year assignment in Singapore and eating at some of the finest restaurants in Asia, I've been somewhat bummed out about some of the cuisine that's available in the States. A biz trip took me to the RGV recently and having visited McAllen about 10 years ago knew that the restaurant selection was fairly slim back then. So when I arrived in McAllen I immediately start asking every local I see where are some new fun places to eat at in McAllen. Just about everyone I asked said the same thing; "You gotta try Salt!" It was a Wednesday eve and I arrived just after opening and was a offered, and accepted, a seat at the "Chef's Bar." I must say it was one of the better experiences I have ever had at a restaurant-anywhere! The service, food, vibe, decor were over the top. I've been to several restaurants (a few even in Los Angeles) that subscribe to and boast of this 'farm-to-table' craze sweeping the country and IMHO at times, don't seem to really pull if off very well. But at Salt, the people working there live and breath it with incredible passion! It shows on the creativeness of the menu that most if not all items are obtained from within the region. I found it fascinating watching the chef's prepare the meals; like a well tuned symphony. While sitting at the Chef's Bar, I was offered a few 'samples' of the dishes on the menu. And sometimes, when the chefs just happen to prepare a tiny bit too much of an entrée, I found the remainder of the dish sitting in front of me ready to try. What really topped off the experience was when I asked the bartender if they made brandy ice there he very sadly said no. But then he told me to wait a few minutes-he'll be right back. Well, he returned with a most delicious ice cream drink that would beat out any brandy ice I'd ever had! Salt is quite a gem for the city of McAllen and I can only dream about the next time I will be able to go there!! read more

The ambience is cozy and nice. You can come in a jacket or jeans! The food is fresh, local, and prepared with unique combinations. We got the fried chicken, which sounds very boring and safe, but it is anything but! It had enough crunch to satisfy that craving but not enough to annoy my teeth, crisp. It was moist and SO flavorful. The jalapeño infused mashed potatoes are a recipient I MUST recreate at home. Priscilla, our server was great, friendly, and helpful! Ok, back at Salt. Probably better the second time around. Sat at the Chef's Table, which is a bar and watched all of the food come out. It all looked amazing! My eyes were bigger than my stomach. Pork belly lettuce wraps--to die for, literally. Chef overheard me asking about a salad and presented us with a taste. Lemon, EVOO, basil, salt--simplicity at it's best. But salad had pecans, Bibb lettuce and green beans and heirloom tomatoes--so good. It's not on the menu, but maybe they will add it. We went here to celebrate our first date anniversary. A few thoughts: - Hands down the best service we have ever had at a restaurant. Everyone was so friendly and being new to the area, they were quick to make us feel welcome. I never had an empty water glass and our waiter Matt made excellent recommendations to us. - They have gourmet salts for you to try on the table. The house salt was definitely our favorite! - Although a bit ironic, our one complaint about the food was that it was too salty. The fried chicken was very moist, but the batter had too much salt which kind of dampened our love for that course. In addition, the jalapeño infused mashed potatoes didn't have much jalapeño taste to them. -The Mac and cheese has a very heavy Smokey and bacon flavor. I wasn't expecting that -- fortunately my husband liked that aspect. -TWO WORDS: Dragonfruit Lemonade. YUM!!! If they are still making this, make sure you try it! Such a delicious twist on a classic. Overall, a great little dining experience in downtown McAllen. Will be going back, but definitely gonna ask them to go light on the salt! read more

Great atmosphere in downtown McAllen. There is a chefs bar that you can sit at in addition to a traditional bar as well as restaurant seating. Their signature drinks all looked very intriguing to me. It's a place you'd expect to find in a San Fran, Chicago etc. Great menu, very unique selections, awesome wine list, although priced like you're in San Fran or Chicago. Service was outstanding, we got there early and had a seat at the chefs counter and watched all the magic that was going into all the different dishes. I had the scallops which were awesome and my co-worker did the pork shank which he enjoyed as well. We split a mac and cheese...wow! Great vibe to the entire place. We came to town for a church conference and had dinner here--what a happening place!! It was a bit loud for serious conversation, but the pure energy was catching. The shrimp appetizer was excellent, as was the pork shank. Service was a team effort and I found them to be a cut above the norm. I never tip more than 15%, but tonight I left 20%. My gimlet was one of the best I've had. If $60 is within your budget, no need to search further. read more

The experience was amazing from the sweetest hostess Selena, to the personable jack of all trades bartender Milton, to the most accommodating manger Anna, to my very knowledgeable and patient server Dan. And not to forget the charming Devon. I sat at the chefs bar which was an experience on its own. I started off with Crudo, a cold tasting of walu sashimi, absolutely melts in your mouth. The chef sent out a small tasting of shishitos, local peppers pan seared with nori and gomasio (toasted sesame seeds w sea salt). I then ordered a 1/4 of two salads: the heirloom and green goddess. The heirloom consisted of heirloom tomato, basil, dried figs, onion, pistachios, cucumbers w a balsamic drizzle. The green goddess was a soft bib lettuce, tomato, green bean, roasted rosemary potato in a tarragon emulsion. I followed this with an order of Coulotte, a certified Piedmontese sirloin strip, cauliflower purée, sweet potato hash, and wild mushroom jus. Definitely did not disappoint. Cooked to perfection. Delicious cut of lean meat. I ended the night with a dessert made by the very talented Milton, the bartender extraordinaire. He's quite passionate about his creations and you can tell he put a lot of thought and effort in making it just right... Drum roll- a coconut & white chocolate panna cotta. It's made with organic butter cracker, caramelized coconut crumble, topped onto a cardamom & maple paint, with a garnish of dragon fruit and mint salad. The texture was on point, the sweetness was not too much and just enough. The dragon fruit paired well with the caramelized coconut. Needless to say, I left a happy and full customer. I will be back to try more of this restaurants delicious dishes and warm hospitality. Thank you again to the above mentioned people of Salt! One of the best experiences I have had in my life. I was showered with little samples of sriracha shrimp, sweet bread wrapped in bacon(drizzled with a habenaro honey) and Mac & cheese bechamel. All of them unique and outstanding in flavor. I ordered the braised rabbit with ricotta gnocchi. Superb flavor and the meat was very tender. To make the experience even better I was seated at the chefs table and throughout the meal I was able to watch their culinary expertise and have great conversations with all the chefs.
