Salty Dogs Cafe was the closest open restaurant to where we were staying, so we tried it for a weekday lunch. The inside of this modest restaurant is a bit cluttered but there is space for a few tables. You order at the counter, serve your own beverages, and clean up after yourself, but that doesn't stop them from suggesting all sorts of generous tips for themselves. I tried the "Wild Birdie"; consisting of turkey, slaw, provolone, cranberry relish, and 1000 Island, on a dark roll. It was ok, but the sandwich was definitely on the small side, so I left hungry. The menu notes that it comes with bacon, but I don't recall having bacon on my sandwich. My dining companion tried the burger and didn't like it. The beef patty seemed like it had been cooked in the past, then reheated to order so it was served barely warm. The bun was cold. We've had better. The restaurant heavily markets their $25 Maine- and Connecticut-style lobster rolls, so maybe that's a better choice than what we ordered? read more

So they were having a Sunday special of spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, tea, and Keylime pie for $13.95! The spaghetti was very good, not overcooked. It is baked but with plenty of cheesy meat sauce, topping and delicious. The garlic bread was OK. The salad is a bagged salad and they give you a choice of dressings. Then, when you got to choose the pie, you could have Keylime or any of the other flavors which were pecan, chocolate, coconut, peanut butter, or pumpkin. Sorry, no pictures of the spaghetti. I guess I forgot that one. The owner and the girls behind the counter are super friendly & the service could not have been any better The only reason for four stars instead of five is it's on Styrofoam with plastic utensils which I do not care for. This deli puts out some really good food. I was excited to try it out and I am happy that I did. This little shop is located near the road taking you over to Holden Beach. It has ample parking and is easily accessible. I ordered a BLEST sandwich. Bacon Lettuce Egg Salad and Tomato. It was an elevated version of an old time favorite. It was delicious and fresh. My son ordered the Roaster and his friend ordered the Reuben on Rye. One of us ordered a sandwich called the Holden Beach. We ALL enjoyed our meal. They have a refrigerated case displaying an assortment of pied and salads. The pasta salad looked divine. I also want to go back for a slice of Key Lime pie! The place is spotlessly clean. We enjoyed lunch from here while staying at Holden Beach RV park just less than a mile away. I had a Connecticut style lobster roll and my wife had the Crab Soup. It was all very good. The lobster tasted fresh and came with drawn butter for the roll. It was served with lays potato chips. I have gone to this establishment twice and I am never going back! The first time I went was during the summer of last year(2023) and I ordered the lobster roll because I've heard it was good. When I received it, the "roll" seemed that it was a un-toasted hot dog bun with chunks of lobster meat that had a refrigerator/freezer taste to it. The second time I have gone I got the Italian at first glance I was disappointed at the little bit of meat on the sandwich About 3 slices of each meat absolutely not filling or tasteful I had to stop by Hardee's on my way home after that. The sub roll was tough and almost stale. But the one good thing about it was the I believe it was a mustard vinaigrette ,not bad only a little bit mustard tasting to me and I hate mustard. Even though not a fan of the food, the I'm guessing owner wasn't rude or too friendly, a bit bland didn't feel welcoming though. Although, the employee I talked to was really nice though I didn't get her name, I think she was the one that made my sub. Ambience of the dining room isn't great very cramped for me and my friend. Now I ride by almost daily by this place and I see flags up. My family and I have been coming to HB for nearly 20 years now, and Archibald's is and, so long as it is open, will be a must visit for us. If you're there on a day when the shrimp burgers are being served. Bam. So good. If you're not there on shrimp burger day, ask when it is!! Same applies for the crab cakes. Nothing else much to add. The owners are two of the nicest business owners in this entire region. They keep threatening to retire, but thankfully have still been there when we return! And, thank goodness, we are back for more! UPDATE*** So the folks who ran this place finally followed through on their retirement plans This is my first visit back since they sold to a new owner, but the folks who have taken over are super nice, and that was always a draw about coming here. The food hasn't fallen off. The only difference I can see if that the cooler of bottles/cans is gone. Just fountain drinks now. Oh well hahahah. I'm glad they went ahead and retired. Archibald's Deli should definitely be on your list of places to eat when you visit Holden Beach. We placed our order from the beach and it was ready for pickup within 15 min. The food was wonderful! My husband had the shrimp burger and I had the wild birdie ( highly recommend making it dirty). The staff is very friendly and COVID precautions are in place.
