With very few computer stores in the UT campus area, went here looking for a webcam, wireless adapter, and a monitor. The webcam turned out to be at least $20+ more than retail price (Logitech Communicate STX) and the store's abysmal return policy (7 days only, no refunds, only in-store credit) makes you wonder if they sell anything at all other than cell phone plans and Time Warner Cable. No luck with the wireless adapter, and barely a selection of boxed hardware. They also stock a huge collection of 3rd party brands that I was very suspicious of. A store that is exploiting less-knowledged consumers and should be avoided at all costs. Even though the UT campus computer store might feel pricey, they actually have better prices there. And the staff there is a lot more friendlier there too. read more

I took my computer here after I accidentally spilled coffee on the keyboard; they were so nice and didn't make me feel like an idiot like some other places tend to do in these situations. They literally fixed my computer in 5 days (Took it in on Friday, they had it ready by the next Wednesday afternoon) and they even cleaned it for me. Also, they were $310 CHEAPER than Best Buy would've been, and they're on campus so their location is perfect. Love this place and if I ever have issues again, I refuse to go anywhere else! read more

Very over priced. Went there looking to buy a micro usb charger for my android phone and it was $20 for a cheap off brand charger that was worth around $5. When I asked the guy why it was so over priced, he very rudely told me to either buy or get out. Would NOT recommend, stay away. read more

I really needed a DVI cable so I bought one here asap. It worked...then I noticed the screen turns off for a couple seconds every now and then. I also discover the screen turns off when I plug in and out my laptop power cable. I suspected it was the crappy overpriced cable from this place so I ordered one off Amazon. As I expected with the Amazon cable the screen doesn't turn off for a couple of seconds when I plug in/out my laptop power cable. I thought I was imagining it so I tried the cable from Sam Computer again...the screen problem came back. I'd give 0/5 if possible. I overpaid for something that doesn't work correctly. It's a DVI cable...how do you screw that up. read more

Came to get my Mac fixed. Took longer than expected, the gentleman running the place never called to update me, I always had to call him, then the day I get home with my newly fixed laptop, it dies and won't come back on! After paying $200 that shouldn't happen. Brought it back and he took a MONTH to fix it, and again I had to call to get updates weekly because he never called me. Every week he said it'd be fixed and every week it was not. He claimed it was because he had to get parts. Well, CALL ME TO INFORM ME OF THAT. Then he told me HE was out $150 (because I refused to pay for him to fix the laptop he claimed he already fixed). I'm glad to finally have my laptop back so I won't ever have to return here again. read more

Sam was an absolute diamond in a somewhat unassuming store. After the campus computer store could not help me, I left in a huff. Frustrated and unsure what to do about my laptop when I absolutely have to have one for school, left me feeling defeated. Luckily (somewhat), I left my phone sitting on the store counter on campus. I asked a girl if she was in my position where would she take it? She suggested Sam Computers. I had a few hours to kill so I walked up to the store with little hope. He said it would cost only $35 for a diagnostic, much less than the $99 at Best Buy and a 7-14 day wait for repair. My laptop had gotten a drink spilled on it and I was sure it was toast. He wasn't busy at the time so I sat across from him as he unscrewed my laptop and revealed the horror underneath! It looked like a car battery had exploded and sat for a year! Corrosion explosion! I knew it was toast. However, Sam wasn't so reluctant to give that diagnosis. I sat for an hour and chatted with him as he did magical genie voodoo on his side of the table. Eventually I had to run make a campus meeting but was back an hour later. My laptop was running and he had reinstalled all the drivers for me. He even took the time to install Chrome and chat some more about the importance of quality products and customer service in the retail industry. I would recommend this place before taking your laptop on campus if your a student! This guy has been doing this since 1992, probably before some of the techs there were even born. Not hating, just spilling the truth. I will forever be a customer of his and recommend him to any friends. Five star service, Sam! *And many people may not know this, but he stocks iclickers! Don't even think about this shop! Completely a rip off. 1st time I went there, I was student at UT. It was for iphone Screen repair. The guy told me $130 for iphone 5 screen. I decided not to repair it. Got it fixed from other shop for $70. Couple of days back my iphone Charger cable stopped working, So I went to get a new one, The guy offered me three types of cables, the first two mainly local brands made out of cheap material for $20 and $15, then third one claimed to be apple original. It looked wrapped in some kind of plastic wrapping, so I thought must be original. He tells me the price is $25. It worked in the store, and I bought it, 2 days later it stopped working. Then I decided to go to apple store instead to buy an actual original, I see that the original packing is completely different. Also you can tell whether its opened before you or not. Moreover, its price is $20. So first I was offered by this guy a screwed up cable and later at a hiked price. I would recommend you to avoid this shop even if its an emergency. STAY AWAY for your own good; they are best in giving HORRIBLE SERVICE. There are very unprofessional, and the charges are exorbitant. The hinges that connect the motherboard/keyboard to the screen came off for my laptop. The wires were still connected, my laptop was 2 yrs old and was in working condition despite the loose connection. I paid them $200 for that, took my laptop to my office which is just 10 min walk from their location, turned on the power, and found a HUGE CRACK ON MY SCREEN. Yes, they fixed the hinges and broke my pc's screen. I cursed myself for not having checked it there in front of them. I immediately returned to their shop, they denied that it was caused by them (though I could easily sense they knew what they actually did to my pc) and asked me to pay $300 to fix my laptop screen. I was not ready to pay another $300 for their nuisance after having already wasted $200 for the repair which was to be undone if I agreed to change the laptop's screen. I bought a new pc instead. Very unprofessional. I hate them, and would not recommend them to anyone. They are robbing in broad daylight. Don't take any chance with them if you really care about your device. read more

This is by far the worst business I could possible imagine. I can only guess they get their things from a junk yard back in 2005. Their no return policy makes a lot more sense now, the equipment is terrible and the staff are unpleasant and rude. Do not go here, I thought that I might give a local business a shot, but by the way things are run here you are probably making a more ethical choice with amazon. These guys gave me a 50-50 shot at cleaning my laptop motherboard which had got some crap on it. When this did not pan out, they gave me a more than excellent deal on (quickly) downloading the data from the old hard drive to one in a replacement laptop. I thought this was fair, and am happy with the service. read more

I've been using Sam Computers for a few years now but have just come around to writing a review when they brought my phone back to life today :). The staff there is always helpful and go out of their way to give you a good deal and give you different options. I really appreciate all the times they have helped me fix my phones and family member's phones. You always get a better deal here than at the Apple Store. At about 12:30 AM last night, I was studying for my finals. I unfortunately spilled water all over my four year old MacBook air. My roommate had a coupon for Sam Computers, so I decided to see if it was salvageable there. After about four hours, my laptop's good as new! Prior to going there, it wouldn't even turn on. He was very quick and called me back about it promptly. Prices are reasonable and he is a very nice man. 10/10, this place is a great spot for electronic repair, and convenient for UT Austin students! read more

BEWARE. This place must be surviving on the constant influx of unwitting UT students purchasing their junk. I've been to Sam Computers twice and was burnt both times. The first was when I was finding a house before moving to Austin for school. I'd left my phone charger and my phone was dying as I was trying to contact people to view houses. I picked up a phone charger on the fly only to find later that the charger did not work - waste of money. I flew out the next day and never had the chance to return the bad charger. More recently I purchased a cable because the computer lab at school said they didn't have the adaptor I needed for a project. The cable was not in stock at Radio Shack and, in desperation, I paid twice the price for a sketchy looking cable at Sam Computers. When I got to the lab the TA had found an adaptor, so I never opened the package. When I tried to return the cable in its original packaging the guy refused to give me even store credit, pointing to a small sign on the wall that states that they don't take returns. read more

This store should be avoided at all cost! I brought my iphone that had suffer from water damage and asked for a simple diagnostic. The manager told me it was going to be 3 or 4 dollars but 2 days later he asked for 25 dollars and he even stole some components of my iphone!! If you want to be ripped of, go here! What an awful business; as an international student I'm lied to twice. The man who runs the store (owner?) is very rude when you question the huge amount of money you have to pay for simply no reason. He only tells you about the 'extra costs' (like a $60 'activation fee' for a plain simcard) when you can't go back. I am in the area for a conference and realized I forgot my laptop charger. After numerous calls to other stores, I found Sam's which was just a few blocks' walk away. I was greeted on the phone with s friendly manner and told they could probably help and gave a price estimate. When I showed up I was helped in a kind and courteous manner - I brought my laptop with me and he took the charger w adapters out to make sure it worked with my machine before charging me. The service here is generally fast and good. It is just across the street from the UT campus, which makes it perfect for students and faculty in some IT pickle. I bought my smartphone here, and will probably buy my next one here. My only objection is that it doesn't open until 10 AM. But it does stay open until 8 PM, to partially make up for that. read more

Sam's Computers is a great little shop located directly on campus for the University of Texas students. It's the perfect place to take you electronics for clean or fix. Last time I was in their I notice Muhammad restoring a broken IPhone with the highest of technical skill. Every student or campus area resident needs to stop by and check out the tech mecca. read more

They opened up my computer for diagnosis and when closing it up they forgot to connect the wires onto the wireless board, so I came home I couldn't get connected to the wireless network and I was traveling. I had to look at a video on you tube to see how I can fix it myself! waste of time and money! read more

OK, so my macbook screen got cracked and my laptop was useless. I ordered a replacement screen on Ebay and needed it installed asap. I was planning on using a place next door to where I worked near 29th and Rio Grande. They were supposed to be open until 8 pm, but when I showed up at 6 on a Saturday they were closed up! I'd hauled my MACBOOK with me on the bus and was hoping to get this done before my night shift. I had only an hour to get this done, or i'd be waiting until the next day. After quickly googling campus area computer repair I found... SAM COMPUTERS!!! I called at 5:15 and was told he closed at 6 but I could come on in. I came in at 530 and even though he was already working on a laptop for another customer, he took care of me and did a quick and thorough install! He even cleaned up the crud that was inside the laptop. He also charged me the EXACT same price i'd been quoted from the other shop. And, BTW, the college kid who he helped before me was thrilled with the service as well (he even got a discount for selling him his broken laptop for parts). Worst computer store ever been to. DO NOT GO HERE...my itouch was completely fine before coming here besides the fact that the port was messed up and would not charge correctly. After having to open it he fixed it in the shadiest way where i had to keep half the port still out for it to charge...ok W/E, fine with me. I step out of the store and the wifi has no signal ANYWHERE...oh wait except for his store. the most terrible place ever, absolutely their rate must be zero, I gave them my laptop to fix only camera, they broken my LCD and cannot fix my camera properly. after 3 weeks they charged me 162$ absolutely for nothing. Great service! Went on a Sunday and it wasn't busy at all. My headphones got stuck in my MacBook port after I tried pulling them out. Took the guy like less than 2 minutes to get them out for me. Please do not ever come here. Save yourself the trouble. They are unreliable and definitely overcharge you. I came here because I am a UT student with not many options. The prices they give you seemingly appear to be cheaper than other places but it is not they will give you a low estimate then increase the price. I came to get my keyboard fixed. Fry's told me the manufacture keyboard would be $40. Their keyboard coming in from China was $70. I asked if I could buy my own keyboard and they replied yes and upped the service fee to match the original price if I had bought from them. I decided to get it fixed here because it was closer to campus. I had to come back at least 10 times to the store lugging my laptop around because they were unreliable and unavailable every time they told me to come. Nothing was ever ready on time. Once they finally called to tell me the keyboard was here I called and double checked a time because they were unreliable every time before that. I confirmed the time and once I got there the next morning they were CLOSED even though the door showed it was during business hours and the owner on the phone told me to come in at that time. They also refused to give me a refund because they had "already ordered the keyboard," then ended up ordering a different one. Please save yourself the hassle and stress from coming here. This is a privately owned shop and they have no regulations at all and do not care about customer service. Once you give them your money and you figure that out it's too late. read more
