I come here for fountain pen ink. Yes I've returned to the 1700s and this is my go to for ink for my pens. The staff is always informative and able to make suggestions. This is an artist dream. They have probably whatever you need for whichever medium your craft is. My gentleman friend took me on Valentine's Day and I found a fluorescent pink 7mm mechanical pencil. I never knew I needed a pencil so badly. They carry the Ferris Wheel Press inks and a few others but I can't remember the name. Most of the inks cost the same as they would online but you don't have to pay shipping and you can view the swatches to get a good idea of the color you're buying. It pains me to write this review of an Atlanta art supply store that I've loved for decades. Most of my waking hours are spent with a pen and paper in hand. I work in the news business, and would, in fact, run to the Peachtree Rd. location between newscasts some days to buy a new "ballpoint" to make it through the day. (Pens really cheer me up! Don't judge. ) :) Recently, I've become a hobbyist of "Fountain Pens" (I'm addicted to them, and loVE the way our personalities are revealed on a page while using) -- and could not drive anyplace near Northside Drive without considering stopping in for a new ink or writing instrument. There was one that I'd been crushing on that was quite expensive (for what it is) [...the Ferris Wheel Press Brush] and I literally budgeted to buy it! I got home and there were unfortunately some nib issues (cold starts and skipping.) I returned it the next day hoping to exchange it for the exact same thing. They didn't have another - so I opted for another color which I wasn't pleased with. The first was a perfect match to my company's logo. I called and the 'manager' said that she'd switch it, come on over! But when I arrived (if you're in a minority population, you'll understand this) the 'script' severely switched. I was told after a wait that (quote) "You can have the first one 'we've FIXED it,' you can keep the red one, or you can HAVE your money back!!" [My request was to not have to take an expensive "repaired" pen after owning it for less than a day. Just wanted converter/nib switched.] After all of that, I opted for a refund and said that I'd shop for it online. The manager took a "WHATEVER" posture. :( There is no other real pen store in Metro Atlanta after the fantastic ARTLITE closed - so now all of my pen/stationary shopping is done online. Is it nuts to miss a business? I'll never go back. I was a frequent, fun, 'inspired to purchase' customer, and shopped at Sam Flax often. Art stores make me feel good. The new owners should be ashamed. I don't believe the mean spirited 'manager' understands what she's lost yet. I love supporting LOCAL - but I'll never EVER return. It's too bad. And I'm going to have to cut and paste this line item of a lie: SF: "You then wanted to be refunded for the full retail price of the pen when you purchased it at a discount and we can only refund the actual dollar amount paid." Sam Flax is an artist's paradise. They have everything. And more. It is heaven. It is even more heavenly with 15% off from a MODA membership. (And if you spend a lot, march down to MODA and get a membership card now). Ok ... why the low star rating? They charge $100 more for stretching a canvas than Binders. Binders was $175 and Sam Flax was $269. Ok - that is more like $94. My bigger beef? The estimate they gave me at the framing desk was only $182. Then at the front desk for checkout it was $269. I was like "huh"? And by this time, my art was already being worked on ... It isn't like I could walk away. Explanation ?Supplies were $182 but the miscellaneous were another $80+. I feel taken. I recently took a fantastic trip to Greece, and came home with a beautiful canvas painting of my favorite place I visited, Oia. Once I got it home, I had no clue what to do with it to get it on my wall. After a few google searches I learned I had to get it stretched, and again... clueless. Luckily, the framing group at Sam Flax knew exactly what to do. The guy I consulted with, Ron, was very nice and explained all of my options-- there were surprisingly many. Less than 24 hours after dropping it off, I received a call that it was ready. For $55 (my painting is 24x30) they took care of it. It is now a beautiful piece of artwork hanging on my wall. Since I never get things professionally framed, I have no idea how the cost shakes out. But time is money, and they did what I perceive to be a fantastic job in a short amount of time. Apparently they are under new ownership and recently moved. I don't know how it was before but it is well organized and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable. I was welcomed when I walked in, and offered assistance. I took them up on the offer and I was taken directly to what I was looking for. Another impressive feature is they have a place for you to test out their high quality paintbrushes! No more paying for a brush that doesn't work the way you want it to. I just love shopping at Sam Flax. Over the years, I've made the drive over to Northside Parkway from wherever I lived at the time for all kinds of good stuff. The new location on Peachtree is even closer to me! Invitations. (So perfect if you've got a good printer and you are willing to do them at home yourself!) HUGE selection of photo albums. Awesome array of art supplies if that's your thing (or you like to romanticize about what it'd be like to have *real* artistic ability). Super fun selection of gifts, from stocking-stuffer types to housewarming or MIL treats. Lovely array of stationery (a weakness of mine). Fun magnets, mugs and the like. Nice and helpful staff. I really wanted to love this place, honest. I am very picky about my art suppliers, and at first blush I thought this would be a good fit for me. On my first visit nearly three weeks ago, I found what I was looking for with ease and the assistance of a helpful staffer. If this was the case with my second and final visit, I'd be coming back again. However, two weeks ago when I was in looking for a drawing board, the experience was completely different. First of all, the staff all seemed to be half asleep and pissy when I asked for any help. Second, the price point for the drawing boards was misleading, and the one I was looking for was conveniently out of stock. The cashier go an attitude with me when I mentioned the pricing, do I just dropped the board, drawing pad, and pens I was also planning to buy and left. Thankfully, I found what I was looking for at Blick Art Supply in Roswell, which is more convenient for me anyway. So, sorry, Sammy. Knocking off a star for staff and management. Maybe I randomly rubbed them the wrong way. Sorry if so. That aside help or knowledge in some areas can be hit or miss based on who you speak with nowadays. Not all staff are bad. The younger staff are usually friendly but frequently rotate out it seems. Older staff hit or miss. I often come here to buy frames and mat board or foam core. Sometimes they're out of particular things for long periods of time.. I get stocking maybe every 2 weeks or so but sometimes it's a month to even more that they'll be out of a product or multiple holes in shelves. Then again I'm not here all the time so maybe it stocks and sells out quickly. I eventually end up purchasing the items online or at another art store. All in all, still really like the store and it offers some nice discounts on canvas and paint and you can earn money back toward future purchases which does give me incentive to buy from here, but if they frequently don't carry items I need it makes it harder to choose this store over the others in town-- probably only to splurge on new art supplies! read more

I wanted to love this place. I'm not much into art, but I adore calligraphy and a good fountain pen as a matter of course. If I were writing a review based on my first visit, it would have been a 4 to 5 star. I received plenty of quality assistance finding what I wanted and needed. The second trip two weeks later was a different story: no assistance to be found, items mislabeled with the wrong prices, and one very curt employee at checkout. Great selection of silkscreening inks (my profession), although available elsewhere I feel good about buying from a smaller chain. Now the con: I've been at least 4 times and every time i check out I'm treated like a sheep being herded to slaughter. I'm guessing the rules for being a checkout clerk there are as follows: ** -Give the customer as much attitude as possible -DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE make eye contact with the customer -Talk to the customer like they're retarded because they haven't been to Checkout Lady College. - If they can't understand you with a mouth full of food and ask you to repeat yourself; YELL THE INSTRUCTIONS SLOWLY AT THEM then roll your eyes, remember not to make eye contact. - If the customer takes longer than 40 seconds to checkout, always sigh loudly and strike up a conversation with your fellow register ladies to let the customer know they are wasting your "precious" time - OH-KAAAAAY. Do your job well and we will send your daughters to Check Out Lady College for free! ** - that's pretty much it. yet i still subject myself to it cause I want to support a smaller company rather than a michael's or utrecht but damn, those ladies really don't want that place to succeed. read more

I love Sam Flax. I am a stationery junkie and I always come here to get my fix. They are one of the few places that carries Snow & Graham. They also carry many other brands of stationery. There's also lots of cute unique gifts if you are looking for that. Even though I have absolutely no creative abilities, I still walk down all the aisles and drool over the art supplies. One of these days I'm going to buy some and pretend I can paint. I also come here to get stuff framed. They are super helpful and I love that they are even willing to show you more economical options like using a pre-made frame and creating a custom matte to save you money. It has separate rooms and it almost feels like you're shopping in a big house! a quirky and welcomed touch =) especially for a creative space. I like colored pencils and they have a wonderful selection of open stock, which is important to me. If they don't have something they can order it, and they are more than happy to put your information and product(s)and give you a call when it arrives! I live about an hour away and it's totally worth the drive. Free parking (unlike Blick), and plenty of space. Most definitely you need to give this place a try. Prices? Well you know the industry. AS an artist, inspiration is so important. That's what I love about this store. There's all types of stuff to be intrigued by from bags, to paper, to paints, to novelty items, to furniture, Sam Flax has just about all of it. The paper section is probably the best of it all...you can get ideas from colors, textures, and shapes. You'll find some of the papers cheaper elsewhere, but their selection will beat almost anyone else. The staff is always extremely helpful and will go out of their way to help you find what you need or help you decide if you're not quite sure about technique. I always go to the back to find really good frames and mats and one day I'll actually buy (not just drool over) the metal portfolios and great bags they have for carrying just about every art supply and computer thingy you can find. The clearance section is also a good place to experiment with new mediums as well. Definitely a place to spend a lazy Saturday and Sunday. We ended up buying all the materials we needed from Sam Flax and making everything ourselves. First, I have to admit that I'm ashamed. I don't know when this store opened -- my memory tells me that it's been there for a while -- and I can't believe I'd never entered. After joining Yelp and seeing all the rave reviews, I had to check it out. I couldn't believe my eyes when I entered the store. The store gets five stars on selection of product alone. You could wander the ATL and have to hit at least ten stores to combine the variety that this store offers under one roof: art supplies, scrapbook supplies, office supplies and furniture, printing services, inspirational design books, exotic wrapping paper, custom frames, portfolios ... Everything I could think of, it had. I picked up a 2007 Logo library book for some inspiration when my freelance clients start bugging me. I wanted to bring home some sheets of papyrus, but I wasn't sure what I would do with them other than attempt to donate them to a local Gwinnett museum (surely they hadn't actually seen papyrus this far out in the burbs). I happily showed off the same Aeron chairs that we have in our Turner offices to my wife and she complained about her office ... we spent two hours just walking around the store and looking at everything. Of course, extra star for the staff -- for being so obviously out of our depth, they were very helpful and asked us if they could be of assistance numerous times. Maybe it was just our blank, awed stares, but it was appreciated given how busy the store was on a Saturday afternoon. Sam Flax brings out the artist in me. Or lack thereof. But I still adore this store! From unique cards and stationary to a wide variety of colorful pens, I love it all! Being in this store makes me want to major in art and pursue a career in art. Their professional (and gorgeous) drawing tables make me want to become a cartoonist; their selection of watercolors and easels make me want to become a painter.
