Good East north Carolina vinegary sauces and bbq sauces. Loved my pulled pork but my partner loved his roast chicken and Turkey pieces even more. Happy the beans were with beef not Burnt end pork (although that's my fave) but then my friend could eat it too. Totes know what someone meant by the cornbread is "interesting" o. The first second of my my bite but it was Yumm! They did forget to take my wings order when they were trying to fix the order when they out they ordered up the wrong meal , and I guess she deleted the wing order too. Yeehaw Yee haw. This is no five-star restaurant. Tables are not covered with white table cloth. The barbecue is delicious. The turkey was amazingly moist and tender. The drinks, both of them, each of them frozen we're both so good. I prefer the white one. I can't remember the name but it's a kind of piña colada. The wait staff was friendly. We were looking for a local spot for bbq and we're told the family that owns skylight inn own this too so we had to try it.. we like whole hog bbq so we were very pleased with it. You go to counter and order and take number and they bring it out to you. The staff are helpful and very nice. They come around to tables checking to make sure everything's ok and refill beverages. I ordered a bbq sandwich wit slaw with side of loaded baked potato! The potato was bigger than the sandwich and that was pretty decent size! Omg it was delish!! Then we tried the nachos.. they are store bought pig skins with queso and bacon and chicken and omg it was good! The reason for store bought is because they chop the skins into the pork bbq so nothing left to fry up lol.. it was fine and sprinkled with a very nice seasoning too.. never had anything like this before and boy was it good!! You can sit in booths or at tables or even at the counter! If you sit at counter you'll see picture of the skylight inn.. oh and this location has beer selections where skylight inn did not allow alcohol.. this would be my Greenville go to for bbq from here on out!! read more

Some of the best tasting bbq I have ever had. I love the whole hog cooking method. The only critique I would have was that it was a little dry. Very hard to critique such fabulous food. The Smoked Turkey was moist and delicious. The only dark point on the meal was the Mac and cheese. It was good, not great,, with fabulous proteins like this, the sides should be able to hold their own. I would eat it again but I would not come here specifically for the Mac and cheese. Wow, really really good pulled pork here! The smokehouse is attached to the restaurant, so you know they're doing this right. I also had chicken, it was amazing too. The sides I had, collards and black eyed peas, were very tasty. Only minor ding would be I didn't care for the cornbread here, I'm more used to sweet cornbread, and this was a little plain and dense. Food was OK. Chicken was flavorful and had a good crust however was tough. The turkey was the best. It was moist and very flavorful. The ribs were decent kind of dry however, the bark was very good and the barbecue pork was slightly dry. Service was horrible, immature and rude personnel. Openly talking about customers and what they dislike about them. Overall, six out of 10 would not come back because of the service. I experienced Sam Jones BBQ before as they cater an annual event at school. I wasn't a fan of it then but decided to give it another chance about a year later. I came here today after perusing the menu. It all sounded good. I wanted to give them a chance, so I ordered a few things to get a sampling of what they had to offer. I ordered the six wings with two plain, two barbecues and two buffalo and the Jones Family Original with mac & cheese and cornbread And a sweet tea via drive-thru. The wait was longer than what you would expect for a drive-thru, which wasn't a problem given that they don't make fast food. I was famished from traveling, so I pulled over and ate the food immediately. I started with the wings. They were perfect. If ranked the flavors, I'd say barbecue then plain then buffalo, but all of them were great. The sweet tea was also well-executed. Unfortunately, that's where the compliments stop. The barbecue was cooked perfectly, but the lack of seasoning squandered all that technique. The mac & cheese was also very bland and not at all cheesy. The cornbread was by far the biggest disappointment and quite possibly the worst I've ever had in recent memory. I ended up trashing all three of these items. I'm giving them three stars because the service was on point, the wings were right, and the tea was excellent. I would probably come back here for the wings and tea but not anything else. It's a real shame because whole hog barbecue is a hallowed thing here in Eastern North Carolina and I was hoping that they would deliver. read more

We decided to ask for to go containers shortly after we discovered that all meats were cold when someone came to our table & asked us if everything was OK & we proceeded to tell her our meats were cold & did they serve all meats that way? She said no & said that she could get us another order, she said hold on I'll be back. After waiting about 10 minutes of her not ever coming back to our table we just left. We took a detour on our trip home from Myrtle Beach, SC to Maryland after researching (on YouTube) some of the best BBQ in North Carolina. This place definitely lived up to the hype! They have the infamous Jones platter that is just as good if not better than the original. Sam Jones BBQ is a spin-off of the original Eastern North Carolina style (whole hog BBQ) Skylight Inn BBQ that's more commercialized and has a wider menu with more options. It's located just about 10 minutes up the road in a more commercialized part of middle of nowhere NC. Unfortunately you have to drive quite a bit out of the way for a stop at these few places, but it was well worth the drive. Sam Jones BBQ definitely has its own brand while keeping the family tradition alive and true to its roots. This location has an outdoor dining area, an inside dining room, a bar/diner area that serves beer, and a drive thru (almost Chic-fil-a esq). They try to do it all and succeed pretty well. You can drink beer, watch football, and eat barbecue-and this place would be able to oblige pretty successfully. Now to the food. I got the Jones family platter-mine came with cornbread and slaw. I also happily ordered the exclusive Sam Jones IPA brewed by Pitt Street. The pork was juicy, warm, and delicious. It was flavored well and could tell the smoke brought a lot of the flavors through. I believe it was pretty close if not the same flavor profile you can find just up the road. You can also add the Sam Jones sauces and they're pretty tasty. The IPA was very delicious and mellow. I could drink that one all day. My only complaint was that I didn't get any "pork rind" skin pieces in my pork. I am not sure if that's a thing at this restaurant or if it is exclusively owned by the other restaurant-but I loved it and I missed that here. I would say something about the cornbread being weird like a lot of others think, but I don't think it's about the cornbread-I'm convinced it is served like that for other reasons like keeping the moisture in and not the taste or being a main part of the dish. My cornbread was too dense and I was only able to take like 2 bites of it before I gave up. It's about the pork... not the cornbread people. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and was well worth the drive. The food was great, the beer was good, and I felt the dining experience was exceptional-customer service was top notch. I love what they are trying to do here. If not having to drive all day, I would've loved to drink and watch football and this would be a great experience for that. Can't do that at many of these other bbq places.....Keep up the great work! read more

Sam Jones BBQ have really amazing food. My grandparents on the barbecue restaurant in Goldsboro North Carolina for close to sixty years and the taste resembles theirs. Sam Jones chop their skins into the barbecue and it really makes it crispy,juicy and tasty. They have Old time cornbread and witch you would either love it or hate it but it is really good to me. I was expecting excellent pork bbq. I got the pork bbq, smoked chicken and smoked turkey. The chicken and turkey were both great. The pork was tasteless. No Smokey flavor. No flavor at all. I tried their NC vinegar sauce. Still not great. I tried their thicker sweet savory sauce. Still not that great. My suggestion is go with the chicken and turkey. The collards were excellent. The food is absolutely amazing. My favorite BBQ place in Winterville by far, and possibly the greater Greenville area. There is one other BBQ joint that may be better, but they close notoriously early. I love that they cook the hogs on-site. The smell of the wood burning right beside the restaurant lends itself to the atmosphere. I often sit outside whenever I bring friends for the first time and talk about how true to the spirit of pig-pickings this place is. The only thing missing is my whole family and a downed tree to feed the fire. The service is also great. They bring your food to you, and often I have too many people asking if we need anything. Sometimes the ambiance inside is a bit loud, but it's nothing unique. Every popular restaurant in Greenville/Winterville seems to be loud. They have a craft beer specific to the restaurant made by Pitt Street Brewing Company, another quality business here in Pitt County. Definitely give it a try, and get the BBQ plate to pair. My ribs and turkey lacked the smoke tastes I was expecting. Especially since it was so strong outside. The BBQ sauce was very vinegar oriented. For me this was a below average meal given the price to taste. My guest throughly enjoyed the chicken tenders. Full is taste and cooked to perfection. This is an order at the counter and take a seat type place so it makes sense to check out the menu before you show up. We had ribs with Mac n cheese and beans as well as a pulled pork baked potato. The ribs were absolutely delicious. They were tender and tasty and didn't need anythIng to make them perfect. Sides- beans were a bit too sweet for my liking but my companion enjoyed them. The Mac n cheese was dry and didn't have much flavor. The baked potato was quite large and topped with goodies. The sauce was a bit sweet but was good. The pork was again fantastic.
