Well, we went to eat there last year. We ordered chicken quasidias. They were huge. Filled the plate. Came with beans, rice, and a salad. Service was good. Now, we went back again. Sorders ders. We told the waiter " no pico" because i can't eat the spicy stuff. When they brought the order, there were only 3 quarters. And they were small. Unlike last time. Someone with us had ordered the pico. Looks like they brought a regular salad with maybe more the hot seasoning. I asked the waiter about it. He said salad and pico were the same thing. The food was not that good. It was something to eat. That's it. I don't know if this place has changed ownership, management, or what. But I sure wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

Today was our second trip back to the La Batana and this time the service was not any better than the time before. Previously the waiter took our order and then we never saw her again after that. The kitchen staff brought out the food and we could not get anybody to wait on us while we were trying to eat to bring us more tea fill our glasses or anything. Today we went back and got beef fajitas and they brought out the set ups about 20 minutes before the fajitas arrived so everything was cold including the flour tortillas. And again our wait person who was an older Spanish lady could not speak English and kept saying she would get the manager for us. Three times we summoned the manager and no one showed up we never hgot our tea glasses filled we never got hot flour tortillas yeah we finally got up and left disappointed again so I don't know whether we will be back again or not. Surprisingly the beef fajitas were pretty good although not to the standards of a nice restaurant like Papacitos It's such a shame that I know a lot of the problem is the fact that they just can't get help but this is twice in a row within a couple of weeks and the service was not acceptable and there were problems with the food and disappointed at the very least to spend that much money and to be in a tizzy through the whole meal wondering where they were going to get service or not so it's such a shame to have that an establishment and have such a disappointing experience Thought we would give La Botana another chance and went back on Sunday September 20,2025 simply because it's one of the very few Mexican restaurants in town and on occasion, we had had a guy pretty good meal but again white staff with not a smile on their face and consistency in service and food and order the fajitas again because I was so hungry for fajitas, and when they came out very quickly, they were not really even hot ordered the chicken and beef. The beef had a little heat on the bottom of the tray. The chicken was laid across in large pieces and was not even hot so I guess we got the end of a session or something because fajitas that came out to the tables next we're boiling, hot and smoking again we got screwed again at Latana manager was rude. Service was not good and the help cannot speak. Good English and really don't even understand what you're saying so stay away from this place. If I could give no stars I would. Went there for breakfast Sunday with a group of 13. I realize it's a big group but I've worked in the industry many years ago even training several thousands in food service so this is not to be rude but to hopefully help the restaurant understand where they can improve and do better. We were the first patrons to arrive at 8:00 am and we were quickly sat, given menus and drink orders taken promptly. So far yes this was great things were going pretty good with the main exception that the waitress didn't seem to be so excited about a large group or to even be at work maybe. She was short and with no smiles or genuine welcoming feeling of having customers so leaves you wondering about how the experience from here forward will go; trying to be kind and nice to her and get her to smile or seem happy to be waiting on us proved to not be useful. She couldn't remember who ordered what and had to go back and forth a few times to get all the drinks to her everyone settled with a beverage so she really was lacking in consolidation and memorization of things in which case she should have had better written documentation of what each person ordered to allow for her to swiftly get the drinks and return with a more organized and professional service vs asking who had what and everyone passing around until it found the patron who ordered. Next it was impossible to get anything quickly when asked and had to even get up to approach her for extra napkins. Kind of something all servers with big tables need to learn to do is bring extra right in the beginning and it's one less hassle or thing to leave guests needing especially if your starting to get more tables. She didn't have a lot more and there were several other wait staff but we're set apart from the main dining or shall I say sat behind a barrier so the only help she got from her teammates was when the food was delivered, yet again out of order and bit chaotic. I did hear her explain to the teammate where she started the orders but unfortunately they didn't have the food in their hands in any order to actually deliver it without asking who had what. Many orders were most likely what was ordered but there were several issues with the entrees for example burnt bacon (yes greasy black bacon, not crisp slight burnt which I can sometimes tolerate but my 7 year old said it was the worst he was not about to eat it). The toast was not toasted just sliced bread thrown on a plate so they had to retrieve a plate to take all the pieces of those whose bread wasn't toasted back to toast it vs just going back and fixing more and bringing it they wasted time going back and forth to get plates to take them back to toast them, kind of concerning about upsetting the kitchen staff as if they had just asked for fresh toast it seemed like the proper thing and then collect the bread and toss it, it's not like it's an expensive food item. Several their eggs were already cold and those who ordered over easy were cooked to well past such. The hash browns were super greasy like the bacon and to boot the coffee being served initially was cold So most likely not a fresh pot which seemed odd considering we were the first guests. There was no timely check back after food was delivered to each/all so some were looking/waiting for her to return. After the meal and guest were finishing their meals, there was no pre-bussing but luckily the check out service with multiple checks was fairly sufficient and quick. However, still no thank you or feeling of being welcomed or that the staff was engaged in their job of service. My family has been there before and had fast good service with better tasting food so it was quite surprising this was the experience we had Sunday morning. Hopefully, next time I'm visiting from Georgia I can give it another try and they will have improved their service and quality of food. read more

My coworkers and I were greeted promptly with smiles and sincerity. We decided to sit at the bar since we know we can be a little loud sometimes and that's more appropriate than the dining area where people are trying to enjoy their food and privacy. Melissa helped us at the bar with a beautiful smile and an assortment of drink options. The tequila line up is abundant. The beer selection is still recovering from the weekend, so I will let that slip... this time. The food took me back to a few places in Mexico that are hard to compete with, however the Molcahete was a surprise I was not expecting. You can feed two to four people with the plate. The steak, chicken, shrimp, and ahhhh... the cactus marinades with the juices of the meat left me wanting a desert drink that is still smothering my taste buds. Melissa was a delight to have as our bartender/waitress. So if you want a chill atmosphere with people trying to disconnect from the everyday task and enjoy some food, drinks, and good company. A big thanks to Ken over at the Railroad Museum for the recommendation, Hubby and I are scarfing down homemade Mexican dishes for a late lunch/early dinner on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Mini chicken tacos to start with- they're so good (or we're so hungry) they pretty much disappeared right off the plate! Hubby ordered a large jalapeño marg, I ordered a frozen triple berry (both were great in theory but bad in execution. For mine: the muddled fruits all stick to the bottom of the straw, for hubby's the simply cut jalapeño doesn't impart the flavor the way it would if it was muddled instead) Fish tacos and steak fajitas came out quickly. Ordered the fajitas- great. Ordered the verdes enchiladas- disgusting. The server was making awkward remarks about her cook, cussing and being inappropriate. Brought out my husbands food and took about 5 mins after that to receive my food. She stated it was because they had to go get the sauce from the fridge. But when I received my food I took two bites and realized it was over microwaved. First bite, cold as ice, second bite too hot to eat. And then I moved my rice and noticed the sauce was literally microwave burnt to the plate. She claimed that it was microwaved for one minute and 40 seconds to melt the cheese. First, you don't need to microwave to melt cheese if the food is hot and who puts an Italian cheese on a Mexican dish? The menu stated it would have mexican cotija cheese and it was mozzarella. Beans were disappointing and cold. 10/10 do not recommend. Looks like it is trying to be an authentic Mexican restaurant but really just trying to be a "cool" bar with crappy food. read more

Brownwood has very few Mexican restaurants, so options are limited. Always Gomez fans, there is nothing that has replaced it. La Botana is certainly not about to. We ordered Carne Guisada. It looked great, but was so tough and chewy! Also tried the queso which just fell short. And the chips? A pile of crumbs from the bottom of the bag. Staff seemed disinterested. Our dinner today was definitely not the best. We've been coming to La Botana for awhile, and it's really a hit or miss. These new "birria" tacos are NOT birria tacos at all. Hidden gem is the best I can describe this place. Family recommended we try for their drinks, queso and specials. Yes, yes and yes. Not only was everything so good but it was a pleasant experience. The establishment is well cared for and super clean. Everyone from the lady welcoming us in, to our server, to the gentleman brining our dishes were on it, nice and so quick. Great place. Wait staff was excellent. Food was great and prices were reasonable. The sour cream enchiladas were perfectly portioned, and didn't leave me too stuffed or not satisfied. They were also simple but very delicious. You also can get liquor here so enjoy some of the numerous tequilas on the shelf here. Restrooms were clean and comfortable. Will definitely eat here again. I always look at reviews and for some reason I pay attention more to the negative reviews than the positive. To me the cust service is the most important part of eating anywhere. So when I saw some reviews no help, waited for 20 mins, but when we showed up there service was great. The host did her job a little serious but our waitress was awesome always made sure we were good and helped to choose a good drink from the menu for my wife. However, over-serving is over-serving and the restaurant needs to rethink its responsibility here Our server was a young pleasant, very young fellow who needs a lot more training. While we were waiting for our food, he and a female co-worker were flirt-chasing each other with brooms through the restaurant. Fun, cute, totally off-putting though. (Also off-putting was him setting the broom down to deliver our plates and drinks. We survived, but ick) The food was so-so. Gosh I sound like a grouch, but honestly, did the spice budget fall through? My fajitas were greasy and bland, bland, bland. Awful little dried out strips of beef... My sister and I went there to eat for the first time and it was a memorable experience but not in a good way. The customer's always right policy doesn't apply here. Waitstaff - Terrible - We found ourselves looking around for her most of the time. She didn't hardly ever come around. Well the for 2 surely isn't the drink because the empty pineapple only holds about 16-18oz. Though, the fresh pineapple is cut and put on a plate and that's enough for 2 people. It took a long time to get the drink. My sister asked for a margarita on the rocks and asked for it not to be sweet. She was given a blue drink which wasn't what she ordered. They were so burnt that the peppers and onions had basically been cooked away completely and there was a black stringy mess stuck to the skillet. I received my rice and beans. The beans were cold. Not room temperature, but cold like they had been dipped out of a container in the fridge and not reheated long enough.
