A quaint good old fashioned cafeteria with a a moving paddle wheel out front. One server takes your entree selection and puts it on a plate for you. Today there were six selections including St. Louis BBQ Ribs, Chicken Fried Steak, and Fried Chicken which they have every day. They have fish on Fridays and shrimp on Mondays. The rest of the food is buffet style meaning you serve yourself. I like it this way better because I don't eat large portions and I don't like to waste food. For desserts they offered three varieties of cobbler, peach, cherry and apple. I have never seen three kinds offered at once and cherry cobbler is very rare in restaurants. I went with the ribs, green beans, corn, and the cherry cobbler. All of the food tasted great. They have rover that will come by your table to pick up your tray and offer you home made whipped cream. I'm positive I'll be back soon. This is a nice surprise.

Visited Underwood's in Brownwood Texas and it did not disappoint. It brought back the m memories of eating at Underwood's as a child. Still taste the same. It was well worth the trip. And the workers there were just great. And the restaurant was very nice. My family as well satisfied.

The best place to stop for home cooking goods in the whole city. Great value for the amount and quality of food you get. Super friendly staff work here also. Never leave here less than full.

I think it's supposed to be brisket .I'm not sure I'm grossed out

We always travel from Austin to lubbock for family. On the way we stop by here everytime to get the cobbler. This time coming back from lubbock we got the bbq sampler. We were really excited to try their bbq. We get to austin couple ours later and opened up the lid... so disappointed. I mean if this is brisket it's old old old. This is so sad and disgusting. I wish I can drive back to get a refund. I mean 70$ for the meal plus 2 cobblers

    All the fixins

Underwood's Cafeteria is a true American treasure. Choose a meat and then load up with all the fixin's. Plop down into a booth and go to town. My favorite part of the dining experience were the vats of cobbler. Of course, I tried them all. Peach, cherry and apple were all delicious. Antique guns and historical art pieces lined the walls of the dining rooms. Underwood's is a must visit for all who visit Brownwood!

My fried chicken dinner feast. This is not a Yelp photo. It's a cry for help.

Super tasty ribs, Cole slaw and mashed potatoes! Convenient drive through. The only negative was that I got no napkin or plastic ware.

My go to place when in town from out of state. A true throwback to when restaurants cared about the food and the diners.

Service was good, food was okay. The plates weren't the cleanest, and the food looked like it had been sitting out for a minute.

I originally ordered the Turkey and Dressing but after being informed the dressing would have to made from scratch after a morning catering job, I decided not to wait for it and changed my order to the fish. The fish was excellent. It was lightly breaded and tasted so good I didn't add any condiments or tartar sauce. I choose the seasoned rice for my side. It was good too but a bit too wet. There were a few more menu selections I'd like to come back and try sometime. I ordered the Funnel Fries for dessert. They were good but I would have preferred more powdered sugar than the icing provided in the cup.

Once we were done we headed toward our personal objective of picking up our new kitteh. Flash forward to Stephenville for a one nighter. Blast down I-20 toward Abilene. Tiny package picked up. And then, Texas. Just a little over an hour to nowhere Brownwood for lunch. Three hours to home after that. And just like that we dined bringing our second spynx home. We arrive to a small wait. A few minute later kitty carrier on the same table from a few years ago. You'll want to start with the cornbread even though your server will bring rolls minutes later. Regular butter for the purist on both. Both excellent bread bites. I guess that's an appetizer if you ever need one. I suggest you don't order anything more. As for entrees my first choice was the Shiner Bock fish and chips but no beer...boooo. Went back to my first pick from my initial visit. The dish had changed a bit. The sorta cream sauce has been replaced by a remoulade sauce. I omitted the rice and hoped that the squash casserole was as good as old fave from Black Eyed Pea. Good bites and the most of the staff stopped by to see the new little one. She liked her chicken and dumplings too.

This is a popular place. I ordered the Filet which is 6 ounces along with a Baked Potato and Steamed Broccoli. The potato was pre-buttered plus there was a basket of butter patties on the table. The steak was delicious as was the baked potato. I cleaned my plate. The TV screen was across the room and the closed captioning was in a large font and easy to read from the other side of the room. So many times I've seen ESPN talking heads on a screen with no captioning and too small of a font making it hard to read. But this place was very accommodating.
