I've been a Sam's Club shopper at multiple warehouses across the country. The one in Champaign IL has to be the worst one. The customer service is poor; their system is often "down;" prices at the register often don't match the advertised prices; but the worst thing is check-out. You'll have to load all the contents of your cart onto the conveyor yourself, as checkers have no assistance and it must not be part of their job description. Bathrooms need more often cleaning, and could definitely use updating. I now see why most of my friends and family prefer the Champaign Costco. Avoid at all costs! read more

I love Sams. You can get all sorts of food items, clothing, kitchen appliances and many other random things.

A four item grocery list and $200 later we left Sam's Club feeling satisfied and defeated all at the same time. We scored some great deals on foodstuffs that we hadn't intended on purchasing, but were too good to pass up. I also found a few clothing items that were marked down and worth the price. We shopped on a Saturday and all of the checkout lines were open. When did Sam's start replicating Costco's checkout procedure? There are now two staff people at all cash registers and you no longer unpack your own cart. Interesting. As a family of 2 we really only come here a couple of times a year at most. Gas prices, Kleenex, paper towels, and toilet paper are worth the membership price alone. This store was super tidy and had a lot of great merchandise. We'll definitely be back. read more

Fine store great staff so why the one star. I called 3x to customer service 45 minutes,disconnected or hung up on each time. So i called the store no answer. Customer service is awful. Im cancelling my membership and rejoining Costa. All of this because of a half empty Container of yogurt. Warehouse clubs have become ubiquitous and Sam's Club and Costco are the two players that are by far the largest across the county. I've shopped at several Sam's Clubs here in Illinois and in other states and they've generally offered a similar experience with layouts and service varying between stores. Champaign doesn't have a choice so Sam's Club is the only game in town. The highlights of this location are that it is usually well stocked and clean. It seems a little smaller than some of the newer stores but I've never had a problem finding what I need. However, the customer service leaves much to be desired. Staff often treats me as if they're doing me a favor rather than trying to earn my business. In particular, I had a bad experience with the auto shop purchasing some tires. Without going into all the details, the problem (including Sam's Club damaging new wheels through a careless installation) took over a month to fix and I ultimately had to take my vehicle to another tire shop to get all of the issues resolved. In the end I did get a credit from Sam's Club but given grudgingly as if I was cheating the store out of their hard earned money. The tire shop here is frequently overbooked and although you expect it to be busy in the holiday seasons, you should have your installation appointment honored if they give you the time. Tire staff is very unhelpful. I limit my store purchases now to just the items I can't get elsewhere. read more

This is our local Sams club. It is clean and pretty well stocked. It's a bit frustrating though when you walk in and they've totally rearranged the store. It's not just Sams that does this, but it's frustrating when all retailers do this. At least make a couple of signs or something. I do really like the Sams club app for my phone. Scan and go makes the check out lanes and the wait for those less frustrating. read more

It's a darn shame that there's no Costco here in Urbana-Champaign because the service of Costco is vastly superior than that of Sam's Club. First off, they don't bother mailing you a hard copy of the monthly coupons the way Costco does. Second, sometimes the gap between monthly coupons can last longer than a week. Third, the customer service people sometimes give false information about which coupons are available and they don't even have the hard copies of coupons on them at all times. Not all of us possess smart phones. Lastly, note that they don't accept American Express or Visa. Some other problems that I have found in this Sam's Club that I don't find anywhere else: -Their eatery will not give you a free cup of water when you ask for one. -Their gas station is the only gas station I've ever seen in my entire life that doesn't have squeegees (I like to wash my windows while my gas fills up). -Unlike Costco, they don't have ink refilling services. -Their official website does not have an autofill option and is also not user friendly. read more

Store review: When you don't have a costco settle for second best Sam's club. I am surprised that this location has quite a large selection, ample food samples, and friendly staff. I don't usually stock up on house hold items here, because it is cheaper to get them on sale elsewhere if you wait, but some high points of sam's club include 1. Lots of free food samples even on weekday 2. The free sample machine that dispenses a sample of the week item 3. 4.99 rotisserie chicken, delicious and cooked well 4. Random frozen food items that make great family dinner including most recently jim beam plank salmon, cod fillet, and clam bake kit 5. If you need things in bulk like chips, condiments, etc than this might be a good place to visit. 6. Food court for your cheap all beef franks, pizza, etc. Some of the quality of food items are not so good i.e.e the mix of different ice cream bars, sandwich, cones from the generic company that sells to walmart as well was simply terrible. The ice cream tasted like water. This is for the order online and pick up at the store. I would highly advise against this. The last 2 orders I have picked up have been sub par items. Did not even think to check them. They gave me a gallon of milk that was already opened, rotten onions and worse of all a cleaner with a loose cap that spilled in the trunk of my car causing the computer system to short out leaving me stranded on the road for 2 hours. The car is now in the shop to assess the damage. Never again will I order online and pick up at the store. read more

Pretty much the only bulk shopping available in Chambanavoy. Sam's stocks all the basics for your produce/household needs, along with a rotating seasonal stock at prices that justify the $40 membership fee. You might be able to snag a few items at a slight discount by checking out the clearance section - household in the back of the store, & electronics clearance over by bedding. They also sample on the weekends, which has suckered me into buying stuff I normally wouldn't have. (Got to sample Pinnacle Cake Batter Vodka one time - ID required!) THINGS TO NOTE: -Photo, pharmacy, optical, bakery, tire service, & cell phone representative available. -Forms of payment: cash, check, all debit cards, Sam's Discover card, Mastercard credit card. NO Visa or American Express accepted. -Fuel Center: Membership is required to pump, but gasoline prices are consistently 10 cents+ lower than competing fuel centers. Shopping on bulk! Woot! I don't come here often, but it's always fun to make a trip to Sam's Club! You have to become a member to shop here, but as I'm currently using my sister's card, I just see it as a hella cheap place to shop! Their produce section has grown over the years, and the quality is actually pretty good... my only qualm about shopping for produce at Sam's Club is that I'm only one person, and am never able to finish all the fresh stuff before they go bad because they sell in bulk. Here, you not only find hella cheap food, but also some clothing, electronics, office supplies, etc... really pretty much anything. I especially like how they have their own little food court at each location for just in case you get hungry from all that shopping, but really it's not necessary. I've found that every time I've been to a Sam's Club, there're free samples down every aisle, so you could probably get full just trying some of everything. I suggest you try one of their pre-made pizza's. Take it home and stuff it in your oven. They're huge, cheesy, and you pay less for one pizza than you would from a pizzeria. Never have I seen such a variety of different items in one store. The store is huge and looks more like a warehouse than your typical store, but it has everything that you need. They also have pharmacy, vision, photo, and auto departments. Prices are great, especially for how much you get, and really saves you money in the long run. My only issue is the backups at the checkout line at times, but that's nothing that any other store goes through. Overall, it's a nice option in C-U for those who want to buy bulk and stock up on the items they use most. read more

I am happy to say that Sam's Club remains very consistent no matter where you find one. I always wind up over in the fruit and juices section stocking up on huge bottles of Naked (or similar) smoothies. They have decent prices on bulk household items if you have a large family or just the room to stock up and save. I usually opt to go to Sam's Club once in a while for things like toilet paper and paper towels since they never go bad and I will always need them. One negative I have found is that some simple items they offer online are not found anywhere in the store. I was looking for rubber bands on my last visit and an employee informed me that they had literally no options that I could walk out with that day. I can understand that there are simply too many products to stock them all, even in their warehouse of a building, but I think it would be wise to have at least one brand/quantity of useful items like office supplies. Overall, it is never a bad experience and it is really nice to get some savings on things that I am always going to need to buy. The employees are pretty friendly, but beware the Direct TV sales people and others who relentlessly try to tear you away from your money. The gas prices are only a couple of cents cheaper than other gas stations in the area, hardly worth a membership if you are just looking for cheap gas.. Inside, the building looks pretty much just like every other Sam's Club. Furiously hungry, I decided to eat at the Club Cafe. My family ordered the Supreme/Deluxe pizza. The pizza was under cooked, quite unappetizing to eat. This was likely because the pizza wasn't put in the oven until ten or so minutes after we ordered, so in an attempt to get it to us faster, they gave us the unfinished pizza. We asked for it to be put back in the oven. This is apparently against policy, so they cooked us a new one (of course, trashing the old one). This second pizza was hot and crispy, although still lacking in any sort of flavor. It was also very greasy! A very "budget" pizza. As far as bulk shopping goes, they have most things, although not necessarily at a cheaper price than buying "individual" packs at a typical supermarket, e.g. strawberries. A membership card has to be shown at the entrance, the cafe, and obviously, when checking out. I felt the card check at the entrance and cafe were unnecessary, as this is the first Sam's Club in several years that has asked for it anywhere other than checkout. read more

I went in to buy a mattress. The mattress was fantastic. But the experience of getting this mattress was the worst. I went to customer service to ask if they had any mattresses in the back(there was a particular model/size I wanted that wasn't out on display). The woman I was speaking with firmly told me that what was out there on the shelf was what they had. I asked if she was sure and she defensively responded by saying she had worked there for for so long that she knows this store inside/out. There is nothing in the back. But she did point out that there were some in the middle of the store. I went there, but on my way, wasn't sure where it was exactly so I asked another staffer that was passing me and I asked her, "Do you know where the mattress display in the middle of the store is?" She rudely stated defensively that the ONLY place there are mattresses are on the north end of the store. She emphasized it and walked away like I was in her way. I spent a minute more looking around and found that display the rude woman at customer service said it would be. Strangely, the customers were very nice. In the parking lot, an older couple on their way in helped me load the mattress set into my truck. They were so nice. Customer service is horrible! Management needs to train their staff to emphasize friendliness and to have them keep their personal issues to themselves rather than take it out on the customers. read more

Some serious customer service training would be in order for their customer service department, one person in particular, Susan. Sorry to say, she is just an unfriendly person. It seems people are a bother to her when she helps you. She doesn't say hello even though I said hello to her or thank you/you're welcome when I said thank you at the end. Sorry I was such a bother. I was told to go to the desk with my two items because I had forgotten my Sam's card and that they would also ring up my two items while there. Susan tells me that they don't do that and she didn't know why they said that. I pointed out the person who said it, who I'm assuming is a manager since she had a green vest while others had blue. She begrudgingly rang my two items up and handed me my receipt. Nothing said after that. And I was the ONLY person in line. read more

There are so many items at Sam's Club that are NOT any sort of discount considering you're buying slightly in bulk. Several times I have found that their prices are higher than other grocery stores for the same item. Prices have definitely inflated on some items drastically. This used to be my go-to for certain food items and now it's just not worth the trip and the long lines. I also used to prefer their store brand paper towels and tp, but they've also gone down terribly in quality. I would never pay for a membership here. I feel that's a bit of a joke considering most items are not discounted enough to make it worth it. It's still nice to peruse the huge store and try to find a deal or an item that you can't find elsewhere. read more

The organization and cleanliness of this Sam's Club is on par with others however the customer service I received was iffy. After ordering a whole pizza at the counter the workers forgot about my order for 10 minutes despite there being no one at the line. My pizza then came out completely undercooked and when I complained the lady was unapologetic and made me feel like it was my fault for not liking the pizza and it was a shame that we would have to have a "whole new one". The second pizza was cooked properly though I don't appreciate being villified for having an honest complaint. My second star is knocked down for the gas prices. The only reason that I signed up my first membership at Sam's is a Groupon deal which brought me unpleasant shopping experience that made me never want to revisit. I went to customer service desk to set up my membership. The staff there is incredibly... unfriendly. You might think that new members will receive the best service (because they want to hook you in). Unfortunately that is so wrong. I was told that I have to present a proof of my current address. An online bank statement doens't work. Then I had to drive back home to get the paper work. Would you believe it? An hour after, I was finally able to shop in the club and sadly found everything there was even more expensive than the local walmart - which is just 1 min drive from the club. Btw, parking is terrible. A couple of days later, I seemed to forget the terrible service I received there and decided to drive by Sam's club for its cheap gas. When I was at the pump, holding the nozzle, and getting ready, I can't find my membership card in my purse, it was 8:29. The gas station employee was standing nearby telling me I have one minute left. When I finally found my card, went to insert it into the card slot, the employee nearby MANUALLY shut down the machine, telling me: it's 8:30. I was very upset. I wonder how hard it is to give me one minute to just finish fueling. How much trouble would that bring him? What is more annoying is that: he was actually laughing at me? There are so many choices out there for good deals. I will never set my foot near Sam's club again. read more

I came into this location with a flat tire for repairs in the tire and auto center this afternoon. Unfortunately there were no close spots or carts in the nearby return areas, so I had to carry the tire in, which was fine. Upon reaching the first door, struggling since I'm only a little over 5 feet with very little upper body strength, Laura snapped at me informing me I couldn't enter the exit. I stood there, struggling to hold up the tire while she very rudely informed me that she would not get in trouble for me entering the wrong way. I could have gone around and struggled with the tire some more, but she was just so rude and dismissive about it, which made it an incredibly unpleasant experience. Thankfully another customer was kind enough to stick up for me and say that they should let me walk in or at least give me a cart for the tire if she was going to make me go around. It's sad when the customers have better customer service than the actual employees. Thankfully the tire and auto center staff was very helpful and delightful to work with, but no thanks to Laura, I will not be continuing as a Sam's Club customer. read more

I had an awesome experience in the Tire and Auto Center! I wish I knew the young man's name. He was friendly, professional and efficient. It was a very busy Sunday afternoon. I needed two batteries. They are very heavy!! He came to my car and hauled the old batteries in, then turned around and hauled the new ones that I had purchased to my trunk. He was friendly, quick and professional, when he dealt with the long line of customers. He greeted some with a "welcome back!" I went to the store for specific batteries. They wee were listed on the website as "not avalable" at the store, but I decided to try, anyway. He knew exactly what I needed and there was no problem! Thank you! read more

I am a frequent shopper at Sam's and I am never disappointed. The store is very clean and well organized, it is easy to move through and it is usually very easy to find the things that I need even though it is such a HUGE store. If there was one thing I could recommend from the store it would be the rotisserie chickens! They are incredibly flavorful and never dry. The only difficulty that comes to mind is the check out process, there are sometimes very long lines, but the great service of the checkers almost always makes it more bearable! read more

I'd like to recommend the Sam's Club Pharmacy. The staff is fabulous, which is why I continue to use Sam's. It's inconvenient that they don't have Sunday hours, but I'm willing to work around that because of their staff. If there is a coupon or other discount that they can dig up, they will do so. Sam's Club is one of my primary grocery-shopping destinations, due to its well-known absurdly-large volume buying deals, driving down my food bills to incredible lows. The drawback is that since I don't have a whole household to feed yet, the large volume sometimes leads to boredom with a certain product before you run out of it. The Champaign location also seems to have a habit of rearranging items, leading to frequent (short) searches for certain items. Wal-Mart bashers should note that Sam's Club treats its workers much better, particularly in terms of wages, than the main-line Wal-Mart stores. read more

Sam's Club is a big disappointment. Today I went all the way across town in weekend traffic with a half closed bridge so we could have one of the few things at Sam's club that we enjoy and that is an actual bargain.....a rotisserie chicken. They were completely out of chickens and the one rack that was cooking still had more than an hour to go. The meat dept. is the main reason I am a member, so I was very unhappy today to leave without my chicken. Also, the Sam's in Champaign doesn't carry some of the items that are often is the sale catalog. Many, many items that Sam's sells are cheaper at other stores where you don't have to pay a fee to shop. I can't believe how many people buy bottled water there, there are many places in town where it is cheaper. Paper towels, toilet paper and other paper goods when on sale at grocery shops without a fee are also cheaper, especially if you use coupons. I have a few months left on my membership and then I sure will miss those delicious rotisserie chickens. read more
