As a longtime Costco member, I recently visited Sam's Club with a friend to see how it compares. Both stores operate on a similar warehouse membership model, with Sam's Club's standard membership currently costing $60 per year compared to Costco's $65. The overall layout felt very familiar, with bulk groceries, frozen foods, clothing, household items, a pharmacy, and a food court. The food court even offers similar staples like pizza and the $1.50 hot dog combo. One thing I enjoyed was seeing ICEE drinks available, which was a nice change from what Costco offers. Prices and product selection were generally comparable, and we found some good deals on sparkling water and chips. We also checked the gas station and noticed fuel prices were essentially the same as the Costco in Sugar Land. The staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful throughout our visit. One difference I noticed was that Sam's Club seemed to offer fewer free samples, although that wasn't a major issue for me. My biggest disappointment was the electronics section. Compared to Costco, the selection of laptops, computers, and electronics felt much more limited. There were a few TVs and desktop computers, but not nearly the variety I typically see at Costco. Overall, I had a positive experience and can see why people shop here. However, the differences weren't significant enough for me to jump ship from Costco. Store was a mess. Every aisle seemed to have items from other areas of the store that people just dumped anywhere once they decided they didn't want including food. Check out lines were all based on self check and a number of people just had struggles with no support. Just has two items and it took me 49 minutes to get through checkout. read more

This was my 1st time shopping Sam's Club. Sabrina in at customer service is wonderful. The rest of the store gets zero.The A/C wasn't working. Things like that happen. My worst experience was when my wife walked into the fair cooler and I waited in the isle in across from the cooler entrance. It took her a while to look around, maybe 3 to 4 minutes. All the time she was in there a employee stood there staring at me. Originally she was pushing a flat cart with something on it. She stopped what she was doing. When my wife walked out and joined me, the young lady who was staring walked away with the cart continuing on to do her other duties. I was her target, and it was obvious as an African American male, standing by myself, I needed to be watched. Not just watched but in your face type of watching. We are members of the other warehouse club and have been for years. We will happily stay there. read more

This place is terrible some days, especially on Sunday with grumpy employees and everyone milling around, getting annoyed if you ask for help. Then there are days that you can come here and get great service from people in specific departments. Probably checking out and those Sam's Club employees milling about aimlessly are the worse part of Sam's Club. I also hate how trashy the parking lot is and the state of the floor in certain areas. Hell, get one of your own mops and oversized pine-sol with bleach knockoffs and have at it. The loss of what 30 bucks, 50 if they go for the oversized industrial mops they sometimes sell, is nothing compared to how much better the place will look. I come here, because some of the food prices are great and love their floral department. You can get better wedding flower deals elsewhere, surprisingly, but if you want basic flowers, this will do. For best experience avoid Sundays and one day before a hurricane is meant to hit Houston for optimal service. read more

Was at Sams when I picked up a pack of sardines. The strap broke and one can was open and absolutely RANCID! I bought some cigars and when I got to the car noticed the box and some cigars were cut . Wanted to exchange it but was told I'd have to get a refund and re- purchase. Didn't want to get in line again due to to raw meat in my purchase. Clerk in tobacco told me I should've taken them to her with no wait. Some customer service. I had to drive about 30 mins with my shirt smelling like a septic tank. It was a lost cause and it took me about a week and A LOT of baking powder to get that scent out of my car. Did a recent visit survey and NOTHING. No response or reply at all. Another survey later and they want to know why I let my membership expire. Why do you think?I was a member for over 20 years and when I write about a lousy experience,pitiful customer service, and my shirt destroyed by your defective product I get no response? This is how you treat your long term customers? A random store is one thing but I was a member. A PAID member. I hope you like the word "Sorry" because when you walk in here that's all you'll get. I'm so happy I'm leaving this part of town so I can have a different Sam's to shop at. The litany of issues I've encountered at this store are flabbergasting. A couple of times I've done online ordering for pick up. I'll show up to pick up the items and there's no one in the pick up area. One time there was someone and he just looked at me, ignored me and kept on working. When I did get my items he forgot a box. I noticed that night while cooking dinner. Had to go back the next day and there it was in the cooler still. Then they run out of stuff constantly that's listed as available online. That's if your order is even pulled on time. I've had my order be ready 25 hours after the promised pick up times. All you hear is "Sorry!" Now the pharmacy. I'm pulling all my scripts from here. A mess. Every time there's an issue. The script wasn't filled, they got it wrong or it's just not available. The Asian male tech is a mess. The main tech always looks stressed and keeps the ship running. Customer service goes to Sam's to die. But I shouldn't be surprised. It's Walmart and we all know Walmart doesn't care. Don't even bother with this place anymore. The people at the entry and exit are great, but pretty much every other experience we had was mediocre to terrible. I used to have a membership but I let it lapse a few years ago. Now that I moved nearby, I went in to get a new membership. The member services line was long and the sign was turned the wrong way, directing us somewhere else for membership. We ended up waiting behind eight people in the returns line for over half an hour just to get our membership done. It was only when we got to the front of the line that they figured out the sign and turned it the right direction so the arrows created two lines and didn't point people to the wrong end of the store for membership. It took surprisingly long to get the membership set up, but the lady behind the counter was apparently having computer problems. We finally got the membership after 6:00pm (on a Sunday) at which point the front door was closing, but they indicated that they don't close the exit for another 30 minutes because people are still shopping. We made our way to the back to pick up the items, maintaining a brisk pace. We were immediately stopped by an employee telling us that we needed to go because the store was closed, despite what member services had just told us. I told them to refund my membership so we could leave. The lady said she couldn't help with that and stormed off. We managed to grab two of the items we came in for, but not without getting multiple side-eye looks from employees who obviously wanted to go home, but it's not like we were intentionally keeping them after hours. Their own bad store organization had us waiting for a membership for about 45 minutes. If this was Costco, we'd have been in and out by that point. We gave up on two items we needed in the back of the store and came around to the front to grab the last item on the list. A lady named Angela interrupted us while we were looking for it, barking that we needed to leave and that if we wanted to shop we should have done so earlier in the day. She was unbelievably rude. My fiancé kept looking for the item we needed since it was our primary reason for coming to the store, so Angela made a point of calling to an colleague for a "police officer" as if we were going to be arrested for trespassing or something for trying to buy what we came in and bought a membership for in the first place. We took the hint and walked up to Member Services and demanded a refund for our membership if we were . We let them know everything that went wrong, and they meekly apologized for all the mishaps. Hell, I've never even had a neutral experience here! Every department will find some way to screw up whatever it is you need them to do. It's kind of amazing, really. When I lived right next door to it I still avoided it. I have been to this location on several occasions, mainly because it is the closest to where we live. There are a few pharmacy techs here that are not customer friendly, or properly trained in customer relations. I waited at the pick up window on this visit for 2 1/2 minutes before being addressed. No one else was in line, nor was anyone waiting in a seat. There are 3-available techs that I can clearly see behind the counter, and though they may have been busy with doctors, nurses or previous orders before I walked up; it would have been nice to be acknowledged and inform me that you would be with me shortly. I am not a negative poster, though I do understand it is more likely that someone will post negatively about an unsavory experience, rather than take the time to post about a pleasant experience. read more

3/7/17- original date of incident. If I could give zero stars I would. Long story short, goto Costco for much better service. I have been a long time member of Sam's Club and had enjoyed my membership throughout the years, but as time has passed, I feel that the enjoyment has become less and less. The customer service had once been great but I cannot say that any longer. The staff persons who man the sampling stations have not been pleasant and appear uncomfortable to greet guests and offer the samples being prepared. Making the customer feel as if they are an annoyance and a hassle is not what my family and I expect when shopping and spending money as a consumer. At the Stafford, TX location, I was appalled by the staff member who refused to speak to me and my family as we made our transaction at the self check-out lane. The self check-out lane during the time (12:37pm on my receipt) was extremely long and seemed very slow as well. With regret, we waited for our turn to complete our transaction, especially after noticing that there were several persons in front of us with more than twenty items in their cart, when there is a sign that explicitly indicates the self check-out line to be for those with 10 items or less. I had questioned why these customers were given a priority and able to check out while those with the correct amount of items had to wait several minutes until their turn. No wonder why customers have to wait so long...because staff members are not enforcing the item limit and do not care about other righteous customers. The female staff member who was working at the self check-out lane at the time did not acknowledge me or my question. It is extremely upsetting to have a Sam's Club employee treat a customer the way she did. As she looked at my receipt and marked it so that I could proceed to leave the Club, she continued to limit her eye contact and ignored me. I am not sure why she chose to treat customers that way, but am sure that it is not right or her duty to make us feel less than other persons. In addition, we were given attitude upon leaving the building when we showed our receipt to the staff member manning the door to exit, and had to explain to her that out receipt had already been checked and marked at the self check-out lane, although she was able to visualize our receipt in hand. The rude behavior is certainly not welcome and my family and I no longer wish to patronize a company that does not respect us. At the end, we recognize that there are other companies such as Costco amongst several marketplaces that value our business more than Sam's Club. It is a shame that my family and I have to share our experience at Sam's Club with friends, relatives, and other customers so that they know to avoid a business with poor customer service or the lack of. This Sam's location needs to learn how to connect with customers and the team should reflect on their current practices. *On 3/14/17 I had contact with a customer service rep who said would forward my info to the store manager, and would be in touch with me. No wonder Costco is winning the wholesale membership war! NEVER going back to support SAMS!! Purchased membership online that had a promotion. Promotion expired without even activating the membership so went to cancel which they did. Never used the membership or had an ID card made. In order to get a refund they said call online customer service for refund. Rude online guy said no refund because in store already canceled so they can't do anything about it. Went back in store and they said they can't refund because it's already cancelled and would either need to pay a new fee if needed a new account so I can cancel. Told them either give me a new membership or $45 back and finally came back with they can only give back 25. How did you come up with that number? I've been here many times, and what can I say - it's a Sam's Club. But, my review is based on buying a new set of tires today. I arrived, and the guy asked me, "What size are your rims?" I looked at him quizzically and gave my make, model, and year of the car. The guy asked another guy to go out and look at my car to determine the answer. I guess you're supposed to know this information when you arrive, so take note. Nonetheless, the guy who returned from my car looked in the inventory for available tires. I have to admit that based on name brands, I had originally wanted Michelin, but the guy instead recommended a set of BF Goodrich tires. Not only were they much cheaper, but he said the Michelins tend to actually wear out faster. I was surprised to hear this [Shouldn't more expensive tires last longer?], but given I know nothing about tires, I took his word for it. My Goodrich tires were about $85 each compared to the Michelin tires for $116 each. I wrote a check (AmEx & Visa not accepted) for $461 for a set of four. The guy said the installation would be done in about an hour. This seemed fair because there were about 6 cars in the garage when I had arrived, so I knew it'd be a somewhat long wait. I hadn't made an appointment (not sure if they take them), and walking around Sam's for an hour didn't seem like a bad thing to me (hadn't been in a while). In an hour on the dot I returned. My car was being reversed out of the garage into the parking lot just as I walked up to the window to check on the status. I have to admit I was impressed. I am so used to Firestone lying about their wait times or taking 1.5hours to do an oil change (wish Sam's would do these!) that I was pleasantly surprised. At checkout, one of the guys told me to hold onto my paperwork for warranty purposes. "Put it in the glove box - that's the best place," he instructed, and he's right. Per my dad's request, I asked what they did about the stems, since my dad read somewhere the #1 problem with Toyota Corollas is that service people damage or try to replace the stems, but shouldn't, since Corollas' stems have sensors in them. The guy immediately responded, "They've got sensors; we can't do anything with the stems." Promptness, service, knowledge, and the fact I automatically felt the difference as I reversed out of the parking lot gives the Tire & Battery department four stars! read more

It had been a few years since I'd been in a Sams so I thought I'd check it out. Walking into Sams I could tell it was the "Walmart version of Costco" just from the clientele. Children running around screaming is not the shopping experience I want. I'm not even sure why people would bother coming here instead of Walmart... sure there were some neat products that were pretty cheap, but why pay for membership here? I felt that the majority of stuff here you can buy in bulk at Walmart directly and sure it might be a tad more expensive, but likely off set by the membership cost. I went in for the experience, that's what I got. Perhaps other locations are better. Costco is for sure! read more
