I was passing thru Newport this past week a couple times and was hoping to find something special…read morefor ya, but due to meetings both days I was passing thru, everything would be closed by the time I got into town. I passed PB&J's Cafe the first time thru and thought, I bet that place is a gem. Not sure why, I just had a suspicion it was gonna be worth a future trip. On day 2 I was running behind again and was gonna arrive 10 min before they closed. I refuse to do that to a place, but I just had to try it out. So I did the courteous thing & called ahead that way I could just grab it to go. Ran in and paid and picked up my bag of food. Nice, clean, little joint. Looked like brand new tables and chairs and nice decor. Got out to the vehicle after pick up and just could not wait to see if this was gonna be as good as my suspicions had gotten my hopes up to be. This picture doesn't do it justice, but here it is! I always test a burger joint out by ordering the DBCB on my first visit. This puts em all on an equal playing field to make something simple into something special. Plain & simple....we have a new member of my Arkansas Top 10 and my NEA Top 5! It is exactly what a burger should be! Hand patted thick patties, juicy, and tasty. Hit em up! They had the sweetest ladies in there just working their tails off. Treat em like you wanted to be treated, and TIP EM WELL! They close at 2pm each day, so if you are gonna be late like me, call ahead. They get there very early each day to serve it up for their community, so don't make em stay late.

From the moment you walk in, the service is next-level; the staff treats you like you're part of the family, remembering your usual order and always greeting you with a genuine smile. The food is just as outstanding as the hospitality: classic Southern cooking done right, with every plate hitting the table hot, fresh, and full of flavor. Nothing fancy, just consistently excellent comfort food that never disappoints. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the food comes out lightning-fast even when they're packed. If you're in Newport and craving real Southern goodness with service that makes you feel at home, PB&J's is the place. Can't recommend it enough!

The mustard potato salad was the best that I've ever tasted. The Parsonage Club Sandwich was fantastic, with its flavorful aioli! They had a nice Nora Jones soundtrack playing. The prices were imminently reasonable. This is now on my to-go list of eateries. I shall return!

The inside decor was very eclectic with art, paper stars hanging from the ceiling, and mix-matched furniture. It felt very fun. We chose to sit in a booth by the window around 1:00. There was only one other table of patrons when we arrived. It was very cold inside, but it looked clean. I ordered a ham sandwich with chips. My mom ordered a pick two with half BLT and a half cup of chicken and wild rice soup. The wait was slow for some cold sandwiches and premade soup. My sandwich was good but it just tasted like regular deli meat on white sandwich bread. The chips came from a basket with two different types of sun chips, which were not my favorite. My mom's soup did not have any chicken or meat in it, just the broth and lots of beans. It was also very spicy, which unfortunately didn't work with her dietary restriction. She wasn't able to eat much of it. We both got drinks, as well, but never refills. Our waitress didn't come back to check on us. Together the bill was in the mid $30s + tax and a tip. It just felt overpriced for mediocre food and service. Cute place, but I probably won't go back.

The old school letter menu is awesome. It brings you back to an old school diner / drive in feel even more. I was amazed at the amount of chili and cheese I got on the footlong hot dog. At any of the large chain restaurants, you wouldn't even get enough to barely cover the hot dog, but this was completely covered and the cheese was freshly hand shredded. I definitely recommend this place.

When we walked in it had all the indicators of a good roadside diner. There were lots of local people who seemed to know one another and the counter staff knew many by name. The burgers and strawberry shortcake came highly recommended. The burgers did not jump out of the menu so I asked and received an enthusiastic response so I ordered a double cheese. We took a seat in the well-worn but clean dining room. It was nearly 100°F outside with humidity in the 80s. The A/C was giving its all and the room was comfortable. Some of the humidity was condensing at the HVAC vents so there were a few drops here and there. Lunch arrived and somehow my double cheese was thinner than the fish sandwich. Upon inspection, it was a hamburger, single, no cheese. I took it back to the counter and they immediately made me another. Back at the table it was again a single. Back to the counter for another patty and some cheese. I checked right out of the kitchen and it was now a single cheeseburger. They turned around and added a patty. Now I had a double burger with a single cheese. It tasted great and another slice of cheese would have been perfect. I still haven't decided who had the off day, the burger guy or me. I dropped a star each time I had to do the "walk" to the counter. All the locals watched both times intently. I do recommend the burger. The staff was wonderful and helpful and worked through. And get the strawberry shortcake. It is delightful. Tip If the burger comes out wrong check the replacement at the counter.
