Sam's has been around a long time and in the restaurant business you have to respect that length of service. My wife used to live close to Highlander Point so she was a regular at Sam's years ago. My 40 year old son-in-law used to work in the kitchen for one of his first jobs. While they are in a different building now, she said it was wonderful to see their food and service is better than ever. In recent years, we were frequent patrons of the restaurant off Charlestown Rd that burned down so this was my first visit to the original location area. She ordered the Cold Water Whitefish Dinner with Baked Potato and a Side Salad. The whitefish is the best you will get anywhere.... and I mean anywhere. It is light, crispy, and absolutely delicious. Their side salad is large and includes cut up cucumbers, onion, radishes, and cheese. I ordered the Fried Seafood Combo with Slaw and Onion Rings. Wow, I had forgotten how wonderful those onion rings could be and shared them with everyone at the table. The clams, scallops and shrimp were excellent. We're so happy that Sam's was able to weather COVID. Now that we are back in Indiana, my better half can't wait to try the chicken tenders and the bread pudding.

Carry-out salmon which was small, overcooked baked potato and dry/flavorless biscuit.

We ordered carry-out from Sam's Food & Spirits a couple of days ago. I tried the salmon which was good, but small portion size, and baked potato that I could only eat half of because it was overcooked and burnt with a side salad that was fresh, but again, small portion size. As you can see in the photo, my meal didn't look appetizing as presented either. I'm glad we had sour cream at home because the restaurant forgot to include it. My husband ordered a fried seafood platter and enjoyed the small amount of fish as well as scallops, but he said everything else was just "okay." I didn't try the biscuit, but my husband said it was dry with absolutely no flavor. He was firm in his opinion that he'd rather go to a Red Lobster than give Sam's another chance. Unfortunately, I'd agree.

Potato skins are perfect pillows of soft inside and crisp edges with good real bacon bits. Potato soup was extra creamy, loaded with bacon and cheese on top. Blackened fish sandwich was not overly spiced, but tasty and flaky. Sweet tea is sweet. Desserts are a nice collection from a nearby bakery. The bread pudding is made in house. Eat at the bar side, nice small open space with quick service

Food and service were both lousy. Will not be going back. Had an undercooked dish and it was not removed from the bill.

However casual dress was welcome. My wife and I both got free deserts. Lava Cake and cheesecake. Both were delicious. My wife had a filet mignon which very tender. She got the Brussels sprouts and she reported they were good, but could have been sautéed a little longer. I had the NY strip, medium rare. I was very good, with nice seasoning. I had au gratin potatoes, they were so creamy and delicious! All the stars for this place. Please check it out! We'll be back, it's in our back yard!

Some aspects were good but several were really bad. We stated with the Fire appetizer, grilled season shrimp, escargot, broiled oyster, and scallops. The escargot was not done in any sauce, basically just cooked in the shell., no butter or garlic. The scallops were gritty and the oysters were terrible. The shrimp were pretty good but different seasoning. We had the Caesar salad which was pretty good. My wife had the special of lobster and filet. The lobster was way over cooked and the filet was a salt block. She could not eat it. We tried to cut the seasoning off of it to eat it. Definitely not worth $80. I had the charred octopus. I must say it was very good and I shared it with my wife and ate some of her steak. We also had the lister Mac and cheese which was ok. The service was hit and miss. The waiter liked to talk to other tables and took awhile to get back at times. Will not be going back.

This was the best experience and these two gentlemen made sure of it. The drinks Brian made for us were top notch and some of the best I've ever had. There were many seats at the bar as well as couch and chair areas. They also have bathrooms down there. Service was outstanding. We had a bourbon flight and some cocktails. Our server even took group pics for us. He also provided menus so we could be prepared for dinner. When our table was ready, we reconciled our check and headed back upstairs. Upstairs, we had amazing service also. I ordered a cocktail that they had on the downstairs menu, and not the regular menu. It did not faze our server. He said he would figure it out- and he did! After a round of drinks, we stayed with appetizers: meatballs, fritto misto, piatto di frutti di mare and the crab cake. Everything was devoured. I loved the crab cake and the meatballs. The fried calamari was pretty standard and the cold seafood platter was fine- I had an oyster off of it. For dinner, I had the "Pappardelle" : short rib ragu alla bolognese, grano padano, and added two seared scallops. Wow. The pasta is homemade. It was phenomenal. My husband had the "Maiale" : 16oz pork chop, cauliflower puree, chard, stone fruit, bourbon glaze. It was a large portion and cooked perfectly. So good. Our friends had steaks and sides, so I was able to try the Mac and cheese- which did not get congealed! The corn was delicious and the mushrooms were a variety. Of course we had dessert. I asked for cannoli and they had it! They weee not soggy. I had three different favors. I love cannoli. These were really good. We also shared the millionaire's tart and some sort of apple crumble with ice cream. Yum. We had more round of drinks throughout including some fun ones - see the treasure chest video. I would recommend this place. They have a great menu. Drinks were awesome. Service topped everything. They went out of their way for us multiple times. Thanks so much. We can't wait to come back again.

However, the older man at the cash register (perhaps the…read moreowner?) overcharged me for everything, and when I pointed it out to him (at first I thought it must be an accident), he threw dollar bills at me while hollering that he knows how to run a restaurant. Well, maybe that's true because most restaurants fail and this one has been around for a while, but maybe it's because they're overcharging their customers instead of increasing their prices on the menu, and hoping the customers don't notice. I've never been so nickeled and dimed at a restaurant! I was so insulted that I handed his few dollar bills back to him and said I just wanted him to be transparent about what he was going to charge me, before he charged me! I asked for a Tilapia sandwich (menu price $8.95) and a Haddock sandwich combo (menu price $13.95 for the sandwich + cole slaw + fries). I asked if the sandwich came with anything on it, and he said no, but he could add pickle slices. He didn't tell me about an upcharge. I asked if I could substitute the fries in the combo for fried mushrooms. He said yes, but there would be a slight difference in price. I said that would be fine because the side items showed it was only a $0.45 difference in price (on the menu, french fries are $3.50 and fried mushrooms are $3.95). I asked if I could pay with credit card, and he said yes, but didn't mention a card fee. What I thought I would be charged: $8.95 + $13.95 + $0.45 = $23.35 + 6% tax = $24.71 total. Instead I was charged $30. When I asked him about it he said there was a $1 credit card fee that he had neglected to tell me about prior, and that instead of charging me for the difference between the price of the fries and mushrooms, he rang each item up separately instead of ringing it up as a combo (first of all, why would he do that??? and second of all, why wouldn't he tell me he was going to do that???). Then he told me he also charged me for the 5 skinny quarter-sized slices of bright green pickles you get from the jar. When I said, "you charged me for pickles?" He said, "of course I charged you for pickles!" So he charged me $8.95 tilapia sandwich + $9.95 haddock sandwich + $2.50 cole slaw + $3.95 mushrooms + $2.00 pickles (TWO DOLLARS FOR 5 SKINNY QUARTER SIZED PICKLE SLICES) + 6% tax + $1 credit card fee = $29.99 (AND OF COURSE HE DIDN'T GIVE ME THE PENNY NOR ASK IF I WANTED TO KEEP THE PENNY; HE KEPT THE PENNY FOR HIMSELF AND CHARGED ME THIRTY WHOLE DOLLARS FOR A $24.71 MEAL).Which isn't a big difference, but in this economy, adds up, and the LEAST they can do is be TRANSPARENT ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE GONNA CHARGE YOU. AND THEN WHEN YOU NOTICE THE DISCREPANCY AND KINDLY & CALMLY ASK IF THEY MADE A MISTAKE, THEY SHOULDN'T GET DEFENSIVE, RAISE THEIR VOICE AT YOU, AND THROW DOLLARS AT YOU IN FRONT OF A LINE OF CUSTOMERS. This was my first time here and I was excited to go back and try everything else. Instead, I'm never going back and I'm telling everyone I know.
