After checking in our hotel we asked the hotel staff for restaurant recos and they suggested The Exchange. We parked in the small parking lot in the backlot. Space is limited but there is also street parking. First of all I absolutely appreciate the architectural design of this historic building. The building was originally Shraders Stable and Livery built in 1875, then became a poultry company in the 1930's, then a tire warehouse in the 1980's. There are indoor seating as well as outdoor patio seating... and high top tables in between where the bar is located. This was where we sat, open air under a roof. The menu was small but it had a lot of good options. I ordered the PORK CHOP (braised greens, herb fingerling potatoes, cherry bacon chutney) and hubby chose the NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN (fried chicken breast, creamy slaw, smoked gouda mac & cheese, habagardil pickles). Atmosphere and service great, until... Same stuff, different day. Charged double for Old Fashioned. I know the service industry and what some people do to pay rent. I had every intention of leaving a big tip, but this killed the vibe. When my mood turns, I go from happiest guy in world to 'no way back in.' I left $5 bill on $48 tip. I should have left zero. I went here for lunch today and had a great experience. It is a wonderful reprieve from the bright, hot sun. I met up with a friend, and I liked the fact that we could hear each other when we spoke. I ordered the goat cheese appetizer and Moroccan meatball appetizer. Both came out hot. The goat cheese balls had a crispy outer shell and were very yummy. The meatballs were in a unique tomato-based sauce which I also enjoyed. I ordered the Voodoo pasta with blackened shrimp. I am not usually impressed by cream based pasta, but this time I was. The pasta was bursting with flavor as were the grilled shrimp. There was a generous amount of crunchy shrimp in the entree. I also had tried the Drink With No Name. We were seated quickly but it was a good 25-30 minutes or more before we were even asked about a glass of water (which never came) or any drink much less a menu. We were so close to walking out after seeing others seated much after us receiving meals. Again, I still had no drink and still waiting for any type of service. It was like my table was in a void. Just a really disappointing visit and I brought a friend that made the drive from Louisville, he wasn't impressed by my usually dependable business. Atmosphere was a bit on the loud side and add in a live music on a Saturday evening (while nice) made it rather a strain to converse with table-mates. There was live music that was really nice and the host even asked us how close we wanted to be to the music. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share among the 3 of us and every delicious bite got eaten. The Brussels were crispy and packed with flavor. The wings were a sweet and spicy treat I won't soon forget and the tots were a flavor explosion with sweet short ribs, spicy jalapeño, and savory cheese sauce. We were seated quickly on a Saturday which was great. My husband's steak frites were way under cooked (he asked for medium well) he normally doesn't say anything but this was too rare. It took quite a bit of time to come back & His first couple bites were cold. I got the wings & a wedge salad with ranch. I was not a fan of the wings. Almost a little rubbery in spots. We visited the Exchange in the heart of New Albany's very vibrant area to meet up with friend/entertainer for the evening during the dinner service. Great food, atmosphere was fun and vibrant. Bar selection was top shelf and offered craft beers. Service was prompt friendly Smiling face. Drinks I will certainly recommend is the "Grocery" yes not a typo and it's delicious! As well as my Old Forester bourbon. We shared plates of the tastiest wings and pasta Voodoo, a dish I couldn't stop myself. Highly recommend Must visit day or night. Street and lot parking. We have been here a few times, but the last time we dined here made me want to post a review finally! We were seated in the bar area at a high top table so we had one of the bartenders as our waitress - I didn't catch her name, but she was such a delight. She was quick, attentive, and very friendly. Our drinks and food were out in a timely manner and everything we had was tasty! The only downside was that one person in our party ordered a medium rare steak and it came out well done unfortunately. We let our waitress know who let her manager know. He came over to our table and apologized immediately, offered to have a new steak prepared (our party member was okay eating the current steak), and comped their entire meal. We appreciated this very much and thought it was great customer service. We had their short rib tots for an appetizer which we really liked! They had onions on them and we thought having pickled onions on them would be even better. I had the fish and chips and I literally gasped when it came out because the fish filets were huge!! Tuesday, 4pm. I walked in and saw two servers standing around. It's empty. I said, "Sit anywhere?" "Check in with the host." I guess the door I entered was a side door with no host? There's no indication. The host seats me. Five minutes pass. Nothing. It's empty. The servers watched me walk to the host and get seated, and saw me looking around not at the menu. I walked out. I was going to get the specially-featured $8 burger, but I was also looking forward to the $10 brussels sprouts and $15 goat cheese fritters. Server, you lost a very easy tip from a generous patron. At we showed up during lunch time, the service was a little bit on the slower side, but I believe that is to be expected for lunch time at any place. My favorite is always the goat cheese fritters which o usually have as an entree with a fresh delicious side salad with raspberry vinegar ette. It's a great place to meet with friends and family . On this final visit, our food came out cold, the buns weren't fresh, the sautéed onions on the burger were freezing and gelatinous, the chicken in the chicken sandwich tasted like a reheated chicken breast, & was rubbery from being overcooked, and the service was sub par. I finally had the opportunity to try out the Exchange, it's been on my list for a few years now but I don't get over to New Albany very often. I was meeting a friend at 5:30 PM, and the traffic from Louisville on 64W was awful, that's beside the point but try to avoid rush hour. When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find a parking lot behind the restaurant and open spaces! You do have to walk around the building to get in. I was immediately warmly greeted by several staff! Since I was meeting a friend I just walked around until I found her. The restaurant is very nice, high ceilings, brightly lit and inviting inside. Also, it was well patronized. Our server was amazing and kept checking on us even though it took a while to figure out what I wanted to order. The wine list online is different than at the restaurant, just as an fyi. I settled for a cheap glass of red wine and then started to peruse the menu, which had a ton of options. We started with the pretzel and cheese ($13) and side of garlic Parmesan frites ($6.5). The pretzel was okay, nothing remarkable about it. Wasn't really that soft, but cheese was good. The frites were very good, crispy and well flavored. The menu items are on the pricer side, so I opted for the twice cooked wings ($16) with Korean gochujang sauce. They were fried very nicely, but the longer they sat the drier they became. Also, wasn't very spicy. It would be a good shareable app, but might skip as an entree. My friend ended up ordering the verlasso salmon ($31), and said it was very good. Overall I really liked the ambience and service. I'll be back to try something different. read more

AWESOME venue! We stopped in on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for a quick snack and a couple of beers. This place was so cozy and had such a wonderful vibe. The exchange is a whiskey bar with several craft beers on tap!! The restaurant was very clean, well kept, with a nice variety of seating. Came here for lunch while visiting the area. Cute spot! Not the best food I've ever had but definitely a good option in this area. The portions were huge, especially the garlic fries. Everyone in my group had leftover food to take hope. I appreciated that they had a large variety of options on the menu including vegetarian food. Her burger came medium and we sent it back. Came back medium again w pink. Manager came over and said the pink was the way the burger is. Wow. Not. Sent it bank again and no burger for 20 minutes. The dish I got was horrible. Bad presentation and a mess. Short rib was good. Needs to be served on a plate then layered with the cheese n short rib. After being there for a hour we decided to go somewhere else. Told them to take the burger off and we left. They did bring it out after we decided to leave. Poor concern. Me and the Wife were out on a cold night seeking a warm delicious meal, when we decided to stop at the Exchange, as we walk up to the counter the hostess says they have a seat out in the tent area.. I then proceed to ask is it heated and warm, because my wife doesn't like the cold, they reassured us it was warm and then decided to set us next to the door to the tent, which was insanely drafty, I was freezing so I knew my wife wasn't in the best mood. I stopped in late on a Friday evening to visit The Exchange for beer and conversation with me best friend. Its location in downtown New Albany puts it in a livelier space and it was easy to find street parking. Pulling up to the restaurant, I was immediately impressed with their large patio and glass storefront that gave you a peek at their interior. A gentleman played music on the patio and it was also piped through the restaurant. Service was a highlight. We were seated immediately in a booth, as requested, and we had a great view of the restaurant. Our server, Sophie, was friendly and talked us through some of the draft beers, even bringing us a few to try. Our appetizer came out quickly as well. Overall though, the experience here was a bit of a miss. We'd purposefully sat inside because even at 9p the air was incredibly thick and humid; however, the inside of the restaurant wasn't much better. Doors to the patio stayed open and you could feel the hot air coming in. Thank goodness for the large fan! The beer samples were a miss too, and I think it wasn't completely about flavor. They temperature wasn't cold and it made it difficult to think about drinking a full glass. We actually passed on the draught options. And, while warned the beer cheese was smoked, it was extremely smoked and we left most of it on the platter to munch on the plain bread. Last, it is a loud environment so consider this based on your mood or eating group. Not sure I'd come back for awhile to The Exchange. Driving there I spotted so many restaurant and bar choices, and after this first impression I'm more inclined to try other spots before a return here. read more

Visited here with my Hoosier ladies lunch group on a Tuesday afternoon around 1 PM and was shocked at how packed the restaurant was this close to the end of the lunch hour. We each had trouble finding a place to park, but eventually made it inside. There is also the option of outside patio dining, but it felt too swampy today to enjoy it. One of my friends suggested we dine here due to the variety of dishes, and It has probably been over 5 years since I last stopped in. I do remember the roasted Brussels sprouts being top notch, but I wasn't in the mood for anything that warm today. At the suggestion of another friend who'd visited more recently, we all ended up ordering the Laguna Blanca salmon bowl, which includes edamame, red onion, mushroom, carrot, broccoli, Korean bbq sauce, spanish rice, sesame seeds, and scallions. The bowls arrived fairly fast and we each ate about half and took the rest to go. The dish was just as tasty later when I polished off the rest for my dinner. Service was attentive. Parking is a difficult task. Noise level was extremely high with hard surfaces and a full house of other diners all conversing and trying to be heard. We were also placed next to the drink station and it was disconcerting when waitstaff chose to dump buckets of ice into the bin right next to our seats. Prices also surprised me a bit, seeming a bit high for what we received, and also comparing to similar restaurants I typically frequent in Louisville, notably in the Highlands with a similar vibe. read more

4.5 As a Louisville native, it's a bit embarrassing to admit that I've never spent time in New Albany -- much less anywhere near the famous corner of State & Main.* But I was looking for somewhere in the general area with outdoor seating, super high ceilings in case we ate inside and a generalized enough menu to satisfy picky non-adventurous eaters as well as those who call themselves f00dies. It had been a while since I was in the market to eat out in Louisville so a quick check of the Jelps led me to Indiana. Naturally. We made the drive over the bridge on a Monday in mid-Spring and I was happy to see the restaurant. Located in a converted historic Downtown building by the river, you got the sense of what the area used to look like way way back when. The weather turned so outdoor seating was not an option. However, the booths/tables are spaced out and the ceiling is sky high (converted historic building, remember?) so no apparent/potential respiratory illness worries. Before too long, Jada stopped by to check on us and continued to give fantastic service throughout our stay. I started with a half wedge salad. If you are getting a main, order the half. The portions at The Exchange are generous. A very large wedge of Romacrunch lettuce came slathered with bacon pieces, cherry tomatoes, red onion, bleu cheese crumbles, and bleu cheese dressing. The taste, size and presentation was equal to what you would find in your favorite nice steakhouse. For my main, I went with a chef signature: fish & chips. Again, I was pleased to find a HUGE portion of thick cod pieces, steak fries, just-creamy-enough cole slaw, and enough tartar sauce to accompany each fish piece. I had to huff & puff to finish.** The beer batter was light and crispy and added to the fish without overpowering it. The fish has flavor of its own that combined nicely with the tartar sauce and lemon. Since I was driving (and crossing bridges), I drank Arnold Palmers but Jada kept 'em coming. I was never thirsty. The meal ended with a surprise sundae for the birthday girl. Prior to coming to The Exchange, I never would have thought about crossing the river for dinner but I am so pleased that I did. I'd do it again and would recommend that you do the same. Great food and service on a beautiful October Saturday evening on the patio! Highly recommend!!! The evening was warm and I left my favorite sweater at my seat. I didn't realize I had left it behind until we reached our hotel in West Virginia. I called the restaurant and the manager Samuel Adams very kindly mailed it back to my home. Wanted to like this place. Attentive and friendly service that means well. The food is another story though, IMO. My salad was underdressed, and imbalanced. The side of pickles was much too sweet. The quality of the Mussels was good, but the curry broth they came in was oddly viscous and far from convincing. Bucatini Pesto Pasta ($17) was highly touted by the hostess and waitperson - unfortunately it had way too much cheese in it - it was all clumped up and dense. I almost needed a knife to eat this as attempts at stabbing a forkful would inadvertently nab a big sticky tangled nest of this linguine-like dish. I ordered an Oberon, received a $7 beer with a $3 "XL" upcharge. The waitress never asked me if I wanted the huge beer. Not a huge problem. read more

And I would've given a 5 star review, but we had the misfortune of ordering dessert. Which was dreadful. The absolute driest brownie skillet I've ever had. I mean it looked like this thing had been sitting in the cold oven for hours. It was advertised as a "warm" brownie skillet with a scoop of ice cream and a chocolate covered strawberry. The ice cream melting slightly on top was the only thing giving this dessert any kind of moisture. I could hardly get the spoon through it. Super disappointing to say the least. Also crazy expensive for how bad this brownie was. With such high end prices I really expected more in the dessert department. But that's clearly not their strong suit. Stick with the apps and the entrees. GOAT burger was phenomenal. And the grapefruit cocktail was fantastic. Be warned though, do NOT order dessert. read more
