Off of Route 2A on Lexington Road in the heart of Minutemen country, I arrived at the Hawthorne Inn, my favorite bed and breakfast in Concord, Massachusetts. The owner of the inn, Marilyn, greeted me at the entrance and showed me to my room. The inn is furnished with furniture, art, and artifacts that are representative of colonial New England of the 19th Century with other kinds of art, such as Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Haitian voodoo masks, and 17th Century Persian helmets, scattered about here and there. Walking into my room, I noticed a cat on the 4 poster bed in my room. It was very comfortable, very cozy. I hung out in my room with the cat for a while before going out to downtown Concord for dinner. After dinner I sat in the sitting room downstairs where the fireplace was blazing and I met some of the other guests in the inn. We talked some more in the morning when we ate breakfast in the communal dining room together. Breakfast included your choice of coffee, tea, muffins and other baked goods, a seasonal fruit plate, yogurt, or granola. Rooms at the inn range from $125 - $325 per night depending on the season. After breakfast, I went into downtown Concord to look for an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance, which I found in a book in my room. In the essay Emerson emphasizes the importance of avoiding conformity and trusting in our own ideas and instincts: "Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string...." This spirit of individuality and the belief that there is no problem that we can't handle if we apply ourselves to the solution is what attracts me to New England, to Concord, to the Hawthorne Inn. There's a sense of history there where our country was essentially founded, a creative energy burns there also where so many creative thinkers and writers lived. Walden Pond, the Minutemen Park, the old North Bridge where the "first shot heard round the world" was fired are all in Concord. It's worth visiting to remember that "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles."

A true, traditional, historic B and B can't be beat, and that is what Timber Post is! She dealt with my questions very helpfully over the phone before arriving, and then the moment I arrived. Vivian has every little beautiful or welcoming detail covered, and the place is immaculately clean. There are intriguing antiques and pictures everywhere to add to the ambiance. The breakfast is sumptuous, but despite all that work, she was kind enough to make me something I preferred. I stayed two nights, at the start and end of my road trip, in two different parts of her lodgings. Both were lovely. It's quiet, for a light sleeper like me, and also important for a woman traveling alone, I felt safe. Vivian even has done the genealogy on the Inn from its early years, and discovered she's descended from the some of the original owners! She said how the community there has been so kind to her. Now that's real sense of place. I highly recommend Timber Post for a true New England Bed and Breakfast experience, in rural Hollis. A delight.

Entirely misadvertised and the woman who runs it is defensive of these small things, making it even…read moreworse. - advertised as having a private bathroom and it does not - breakfast listed as 7:30-9:30am in the booklet that is in the room but it is not, it is at exactly 8am only which we were never notified about - the noise is terrible - I was woken up to people talking downstairs that sounded like they were in our room, and that continued until we left - woman running it just got defensive when trying to address the bathroom and breakfast, just saying "but we've had a lot of people stay without any complaint" - for every person who says something, though, there are a hundred who don't say anything. - we had to "prove" to her that the listing was wrong bc she just tried to say that she didn't realize and blamed it on booking.com, though it is not the fault of booking.com, it is the fault of the business and it is illegal to do this kind of bait and switch - she offered a 10% refund while asking "are you going to write a bad review either way?" - well, I wasn't planning on it, but the fact that she tried to bribe us to not write a review means I sure as heck am now - on top of all of this, the bathroom was out of toilet paper with no more rolls available I suggest avoiding this place unless you want to have no idea what you show up to regardless of what you booked, then want to deal with a defensive woman who won't internalize or listen to the issues. Note: I deleted and reposted this, bc her response illegally posted some personally identifiable information. The response also showed the inability to internalize feedback, and misguided perspective on that feedback. Example: We SHOWED her the booking.com website where it clearly stated private bathroom in multiple places. I had to travel to the area for business and…read moredecided that I wanted to stay someplace with some charm and character so I chose the Fletcher Tavern Bed & Breakfast and I am so glad that I did. I would have really missed out on the experience if I had stayed at some cold, indifferent corporate hotel next door to a fast food restaurant. I booked the upstairs Tavern room which has it's own a detached bathroom with an antique clawfoot tub. The bedroom was comfortably furnished with two cozy sitting areas, a fluffy double feather bed and lots of interesting antiques. The plush feather bed was so fluffy that for the first time in months I woke up without a backache, which was also glorious benefit to my stay. The room also came with amenities like gourmet snacks, beverages, reading materials, WiFi access, and a television. (Although I had so much to see and do between the 2 Tavern rooms and the surrounding area that I didn't even bother turning on television!) The house itself is a sight to see, as it dates to the early 1700's and is lovingly furnished with beautiful antiques and the hostess, Elizabeth, has classical music playing softly in the background at all times. Elizabeth is also lovely, and just so gracious. In addition to beautifully channeling her inner Katherine Hepburn (minus Katherine's famous acidic quips) she goes above and beyond to make sure your needs are met and your stay is memorable. She either stayed up really late, or got up incredibly early, each day that I needed to leave early for work to set out a separate breakfast for me in the main dining room which overlooks the flower filled garden. She made sure that the hot items were hot and the cold items were cold, and it was all delicious. It was served with a bouquet of fresh flowers, under the dimmed chandelier, on the most delicate bone china serving pieces while Chopin played over Bose speakers faintly in the background...now THAT is the way to start a work day. The final day that I was there I was able to have breakfast at a decent time and she served me assorted tropical fruits and whole grain pancakes with butter and real maple syrup and French Press coffee on the flower ringed back patio. It was glorious. Nobody wants to travel on work for multiple days, but if you find yourself needing to travel and in this area, do yourself a HUGE favor and stay here instead of at the corporate hotel chain down by the highway. It's right in town so it's the same distance geographically, and you will likely pay about the same, or maybe less, and your experience will be 100x more memorable.

The reservation was cancelled the morning of my arrival due to overbooking. I contacted the owner by phone once I was notified by Orbitz. After speaking the owner determined she could accommodate me since I was a single. I confirmed check in until 10 pm. When I arrived @ 9 pm. I got no answer at the door or by phone, when I Repeatedly called & rang the doorbell. The owner had obviously found someone else to rent the room to and I was left w no place to stay!!! At 9 pm at night! It seemed she had trouble operating modern technology . She had contacted Expedia not Orbitz which added to her confusion. A TOTAL DISASTER! Don't book this place!

If you're considering an event here, book it now and you won't be disappointed. First off, the property is stunning. The house has beautiful rooms to get ready in with great light; the facade of the house makes for beautiful photos; the barn is iconic and warm; the gardens were stunning in full bloom; there are fences and paths through the woods galore. We had our ceremony at the top of a hill overlooking a scenic New England field and pond. The reception was in a beautiful field under a big tree for shade. And for those worried about unsteady grandparents, there were easy ways to help them get around. Everything was beautiful, a real classic New England farm. Then, the decorations! Every small detail was perfect. All of the flowers were fresh from Wendy's garden and the arrangements were PERFECT. The signage and table settings were gorgeous and involved freshly stripped bark with calligraphied names of all of our guests. There were blankets on the back of all of the chairs for when it got chillier at night! Seriously, Wendy thought of everything. And last, but certainly not least, Wendy! You couldn't ask for a better planner, friend, and kind soul. She has been a wedding planner for decades and now she and her husband run the Phineas Wright House. I didn't stress once on the day of the wedding because I knew Wendy had it all under control. From the moment my husband and I started planning the wedding, she was alongside us supporting and cheering us on. I would often say "I'm so grateful for Wendy!" We had started our wedding planning with Wendy when we were going to have a 100 person wedding elsewhere, and by the end we had a 12 person, socially distanced wedding at her home, and honestly it was absolutely perfect. I still dream of the Phineas Wright House and our magical wedding day. I wish you the same joy!

The owners (an adorable old couple) are incredibly sweet, and will let you wash your mouth with anything. The food is terrific and the service second to none. But be aware: the refrigerator looks like a pantry, and the pantry looks like another room. One final word of advice: the "dog" is awesome, but I think he may actually be an unregistered horse of some kind. Also: don't forget to have your parking validated (not the cost of it... just ask them to reassure you that "you did a good job").
