My wife and I looked at quite a few BnB's when we had business to attend to in Boston. Many were cute but over priced, some had cats that were allowed to roam into guests rooms at will. Lyttleton Inn was absolutely delightful! The room was clean, cozy and welcoming. Bed was confortable with down pillows and throws. Everything we possibly could need was present. Mary, the Innkeeper served us a wonderful breakfast consisting of fresh made Blueberry Scones, Yogurt w/ Granola and Apple Slices, Freshly squeezed Orange Juice (love pulp myself) and Poach Eggs on English muffins and canadian Bacon with a Champagne Grape garnish. Mary was very warm and personable, we had a nice conversation about several subjects. You can see that she genuinely loves what she does. The area is very quaint, and homey. Would surely make this our destination when returning to the area.. read more

I contacted Mary at Lyttleton Inn, and she seemed nice and responsive. She told me that there would be an apartment available after the end of February. I heard nothing else from her, even though I kept in contact with her with emails. She finally answered and said that my emails "must have gone to spam" even though I replied to her emails. I don't think that can happen. When it came to the end of February, she said that she didn't know when the apartment would be available, and that I should "drop her place from my list for available rentals." She seems to be inconsistent with what she says..maybe some mental health issues... read more

Had the most wonderful and comfortable stay there recently. Got to see the Fall leaves and enjoy a beautiful and enjoyable stay in the nicest bed and breakfast. Mary is a most gracious host and we loved her breakfasts. We had a cup of tea and homemade biscotti in the evening sitting in the front room. Our bedroom was perfect and we even slept in much later than normal because the bed was so comfortable. Thank you Mary and we will definitely return! read more

I stayed here in June 2018 and unfortunately, didn't have the same positive experience as the majority of the other guests who wrote reviews. I arrived much later than expected because I got lost resulting in a delay of ~ 2 hours. I was on my way to an important event for my best friend and was very stressed about being late. It was extremely hot and humid. I was disheveled when I arrived and I was in desperate need of a shower. Because of all of these things I am sure I didn't make a good first impression and it was obvious that all interactions thereafter with Mary, the Innkeeper, were an annoyance to her. I didn't fold the newspaper in the common area before going upstairs to charge my phone even though it should have been obvious I was returning because I left my keys on the table. Initially I unwittingly sat at the wrong table at breakfast and I couldn't get the window shut in the dining room when Mary needed help. Last but not least, the fact that I asked if there was someone who could assist me getting my suitcase down from upstairs was something that was a big deal to her. The stairs going to the second floor are very steep and narrow (be aware of this before booking). I have a disability with my hands and was worried all night about how I would get my very heavy suitcase downstairs when leaving. I decided to remove some items from my suitcase to make it lighter and take them to the car separately and evidently that was a mistake too. I get the fact that we didn't get off to a good start but surely the proprietor has had other guests in similar situations. For some reason she was not able to get past that with me. Needless to say I would never stay here again and certainly wouldn't recommend it to friends and family. I had a lot of very sad things going on in my life at the time and was looking forward to escaping them for a few days but this experience only made me feel worse. My husband are big fans of B&B's- especially the ones that are affordable (moreso than many hotels!) and offer the best of amenities. Mary was incredibly welcoming and helpful. The room (The Naturalist) was incredibly comfortable and cool for a hot summer day (window AC) and the public spaces were so welcoming. We were (at first) disappointed that there was no TV in our room (we look forward to cable when we are out, since we don't have it at home) BUT found the parlor so nice that we played cards, did crosswords, and generally enjoyed ourselves sans television, making for an even more relaxing night. The Inn is located in a very small town, with restaurants and shops galore in the surrounding area. There are also several museums and things to do (Concord and Lowell are just a few miles away) in the vicinity. Absolutely delightful! read more

The Lyttleton Inn is a wonderfully quaint New England B&B. I stayed here during my wedding and had a wonderful time. The breakfast was so delicious and fresh. Between the beautiful decor and cozy trimmings of every space in this Inn and the warm and welcoming inn-keep, Mary, the Lyttleton Inn is guaranteed to leave anyone who stays there with wonderful memories to last a lifetime. My wife and I stayed here this weekend for a Valentine's Day getaway and will absolutely be returning! We stayed in the suite on the first floor, which is not only spacious but full of antique charm with wide-planked hardwood floors, a beautiful mantle, an amazingly deep jacuzzi, and thoughtful details placed throughout the room including a window display of orchids. COVID obviously had an impact, leaving the communal areas understandably closed, but when they claim that their breakfasts are award winning I absolutely believe it -- this morning we were served a lovely spread of DELICIOUS freshly made waffles, sausage links, and other fare served in portioned out dishes to comply with COVID safety. All in all, I cannot recommend this place enough, and I hope that everyone who reads this eventually has the opportunity to stay at the Lyttleton Inn! Very cute and clean B&B. She made us a beautiful, delicious breakfast, starting with yogurt & granola parfait to poached eggs with fried rice to cookies for coffee. This was our first visit to the Lyttleton Inn, and definitely will not be our last! Mary, the innkeeper, fed us farm-to-table delicacies each morning, such as poached eggs caprese over risotto and peach parfait with shortbread. Each evening we were able to have any of a hundred different teas in the Tea Room or partake in some port in the Library. There are no TVs, making this an ideal place to unplug and recharge ( there is WiFi, so you can keep connected if you need to). Mary has amassed hundreds of books, all of which are available for you to curl up with in a cozy corner. Relaxing and welcoming, we recommend it without hesitation. read more

A wonderful experience. The Lyttleton Inn is perfectly located for all sorts of day trips. The room we had was really clean, well maintained, comfortable, and the bed was great. Every morning before breakfast, coffee and newspapers were waiting downstairs in the parlor. The breakfasts, well, I wish I'd taken pictures. Three mornings and each breakfast was a total treat. And Mary, the innkeeper, was friendly, amazingly helpful, and had a smile no matter what time of morning or evening we ran into her. She directed us to great dining and sightseeing. After a warm afternoon, Mary brought me a frosted mug and a beer in the downstairs parlor. This was probably the top B&B experience we've had. read more

Mary, the innkeeper, is extremely sweet, a great cook, and has taken care of all the details. The house is a wonderful old gem, filled with books, antiques, and comfortable chairs and sofas to sit on. Everything you could need is always within arms reach: cookies, coffee, tea supplies, books, throws, corkscrew, Port wine, chocolate, small candies, everything. We found the Innkeeper, Mary, to be very rude and inconsiderate most of the time. We were refused breakfast when we failed to notify her the night before that we were having breakfast that morning. We were often told by Mary that she was "too busy" to get us some ice or fresh coffee and had to wait at times over 40 minutes for it. One time after waiting so long we left and bought coffee across the street. The rooms are ok but cluttered with knick-knacks all over the dresser and tables leaving no room for our personal items. The "private bath" was a small shower with no vanity and a very small sink. Again there was too much clutter on the sink for our personal things. The shower curtain rod fell down each time we used the shower. The linens were worn and thrify store quality. There were no amenities that we usually enjoyed at better inns. No TV, coffee machine, microwave, refrigerator nor access to ice when we wanted it. The food was unimpressive and a 3 course breakfast was too heavy for our busy day ahead. We did not like the store bought "everything" bagles that we were served nor the dry tasteless muffins. No butter or jam was offered. There was no "choice" for breakfast, you get what they serve, period. The stairs are very steep and it was diffucult to carry our bags upstairs with no help offered. We were given a discount that amounted to about $20 less a night as recommended by a friend of the owner but that did not make up for the rudness and lack of professionalism that we experienced. Innkeeper went into our room and turned off the A/C and opened the wodows when we were not there. My husband has severe allergies and this caused a problem with his breathing. She also went into our room once and took most of the gifts and souvenirs that we had purchased off the dresser and table, threw them in a box and put them ON THE FLOOR under a chair. We were paying customers and we were treated terribly. She also took most of our bathroom items and rearranged them to suit herself. She compromised our privacy by telling 3rd outside parties of our stay there and complained about us behind our backs. The parking was limited towards the front entrance with the Innkeeper reserving and parking in 1 of 3 prime spaces located close to the door. We had to walk in the rain up the hill and around the side of the building with packages in hand while the innkeeper parked by the front door. We observed the family of the innkeeper parking in the handicapped space on one occasion. We ended up leaving 5 days early and when we notified the innkeeper of this she would no longer speak with us. She refused to serve us breakfast although it was part of the cost of staying there and refused to check us out when we were leaving. She later reported to family members that we had taken the keys of the inn which we had left on her desk when we left. If you want to stay a place where the innkeeper is unprofessional, rude, violates your privacy, is overcontrolling and thinks you are there to please her,not the other way around, then this is the place to go. We WOULD recommend this place to our worse enemy! read more

Some say that a B&B is reflection of the innkeeper and this is certainly true here. Mary is warm and friendly and she went out of her way to make us comfortable. Knowing that it was our anniversary, we found a small bottle of bubbly in the room. The room itself was quite spacious. The furnishing were a mix of antiques and what appeared to be newer locally crafted furniture. We were very comfortable here. Breakfast was a real treat. Homemade pumpkin scones, a wonderful yogurt and cereal dish followed by eggs Benedict. After breakfast, Mary talked with us for some time and gave us lots of sightseeing tips for the area and tailored to our desire to be enjoying the fall weather. I stayed with a friend at the Lyttleton Inn while attending a wedding, and I can't say enough good things about it. This B&B is exactly what the stereotypical B&B is supposed to be like, but so few are - homey, friendly, warm, and relaxed. I loved lounging around their sitting room/library, reading one of the owner's books while listening to comfy classical and being plied with fresh-brewed tea and hot cookies straight out of the oven. My friend loved that she came in on the commuter train at 11pm (she had missed her intended connection), couldn't get a cab, and the owner's husband volunteered to drive out himself and pick her up. We both loved their adorable rooms (sweet but not TOO cutesy!) and their fantastic multi-course breakfast. The owner seems both to be very good at running a B&B and genuinely enjoy doing it. All this, for a lower price than the soulless Marriott down the road! read more

My husband and I originally booked a room for June, but had to cancel our reservation for personal reasons. I called and emailed the owners to request a cancellation and all seemed well. They said they would refund my deposit. They told me that they would have to issue a check, which seemed fine. This was months ago. I emailed again, and they said they would send a new check....a month later, still nothing. This is my third time trying to contact them for my refund. The service has been terrible and I'm not sure what is so difficult about sending a check to someone. Though I have never been to the actual inn, I can't imagine how it's managed since this simple task is taking months to get straight. I'm so disappointed and frustrated. read more
