The staff--from the receptionist and nurses to the anesthesiologist and surgeon--were all incredibly helpful, professional, and caring. I am writing this review as a previous employee of San Antonio Surgical Arts. I took the position as a stepping stone into a surgical facility. I had previously read the reviews of the management and employees but did not want to judge a facility off that solely. Unfortunately I was able to confirm those bad reviews were 100% true. The management is literally ran by one of the dentist own mother...and she happens to manage her employees very similar to the way a mother would manage a child. I have never worked with a company that has threaten to fire me over following the procedures they taught me. The quality of management and customer service is beyond poor. This is a prime example of you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and what momma says goes. Miss Margaret (mom) seems to care nothing about knowledge and experience in the field. Her main focus consist more of how she can bash her new employees and glorify her old employees that seem to run the facility with minimum care and effort for years. If your looking for a friendly, knowledgeable, equal opportunity position in the dental world please look else where...you will not get any of those attributes working for San Antonio Surgical Arts. They require payment in full the day of surgery with no payment options available when paying in cash or out-of-pocket. The estimate of the 4 wisdom teeth extraction was a little over $5,000. My son needed 4 wisdom teeth extracted and was told by the receptionist that payment in full is required the day of the procedure. I asked if any discount was available for paying cash and was told no and she said that no payment plans are available either. I asked her if all patients pay in full the day of their procedure and she said "Yes, all of our patients pay in full the day of their procedure." . The day of the consultation, my son was scheduled to be seen at 8:30 am but wasn't seen until 10:30 am. We were charged and paid $120 for the initial consultation. read more

Take this as a cautionary review. I needed to write this review in response to the number of unfortunate events that ensued after my daughter had her wisdom teeth removed at this office. She had had an initial evaluation done by Dr. Maclave at San Antonio Surgical arts office on SW Military on 03/23/23 (weight, height and xrays were taken). I decided not to have the procedure done until 06/28/23 at the office on Blanco Rd. at which time no updated weight was taken. In my mind I thought they would have needed to redo to ensure proper amount of anesthesia is given to her or any patient for that matter but was not done. The procedure per nursing staff would take 45 minutes to an hour. At an hour, I asked for a status update. Stated was in recovery, 15 minutes later, ask again. She once again checks and tells me in recovery. When in fact had her already outside in the hot sun versus letting me know immediately. That same day I was told by the nurse, Ashley, that she would be groggy and given instructions about after care. Something was still off about my daughter hours later and decided to take her to the Children's Hospital since she was unable to swallow the pain meds and antibiotics she was given. They were unable to give me much information and just switched the pain meds to liquid form to help ease the pain she was in. So, I made a follow-up visit with the doctor the next day (Thursday, 06/29), Dr. Parker, since he was the one available at the Blanco location. He gave me further instructions regarding care and switched the antibiotics to liquid as well. Furthermore, he reassured me that the incision was fine but that she was still under the effects of the anesthesia. This to me was odd but chose to trust that it was just part of the process. That same afternoon after giving her part of the medication, she started trembling. Had to call EMT to have her checked out. Once again, another group of professionals reassured me that it was just that she was in pain and had an anxiety attack. After what occurred I decided to not give her any more meds for that day and waited till the following day to attempt meds again. On Friday (06/30), I called the Blanco office and spoke to Angie which informed me that the meds used to sedate my daughter were - midazolam, Demerol, and ketamine. And advised that they always give their patients the same dosage and meds. Angie took the call and advised me once again that my daughter's reaction was not normal and that I just had to talk to her to snap out of it. That same day, she is taken to get labs that were ordered by her pediatrician for a different reason and was advised by her pediatrician and nursing staff to take her immediately to the Children's ER. Being that she did not look like she looked on Monday's medical visit with her pediatrician. After having assessed her, they felt it necessary for her to be taken to a hospital being it was not normal for her to have not metabolized the meds that were given to her the day of the surgery by now. She spent 3 days in the hospital recuperating and only then was she able to process what was given to her. The ER pediatrician mentioned that the 'cocktail' of meds that were used were outdated and no longer used to sedate based on strength. This caused a lot of damage and left my daughter with trauma and fear of doctors and nurses and was more than evident when she was in the hospital being treated. I feel that much of this could have been avoided if she had been weighed again and proper dosage given since she was unable to eat and react for days after the procedure. read more

They were able to help me extract my wisdom teeth with short notice. Always will be grateful. The only thing I didn't appreciate was coming in for more medicine and they forgot to tell me my results that had been in. Since I hadn't gotten the bill at home for the labs I didn't think they had the results at that time. read more

Our consult was scheduled for 9:30am on Monday. I was called Friday and told the doctor asked if instead we could be here before 8:00. I said yes, to be accommodating, and went about rearranging my schedule around the doctor's request. I've been here since 8:00. It is now 9:30 and I have yet to see the doctor. I worked in a doctor's office for years, and kept him on a tight schedule out of respect for his patients. In a million years, I would not ask someone to change their appointment for the doctor's sake and then keep them waiting for over an hour and a half. It's rude. My father was a doctor and used to tell me that all doctors are Prima Donnas. IMO, being utterly unconcerned with your patients' time, schedules and livelihood is a hallmark of a Prima Donna. read more

Dr. Gissel is one of the best dentists I have ever had! I was very nervous about my wisdom teeth extraction. My fears were calmed upon meeting Dr. Gissel. The consultation was very thorough and I could tell that he was very knowledgeable about the procedure. During the consultation he placed an x-ray image of my teeth and explained my case and different complications I may experience, such as the proximity of my teeth to my nerves on the bottom and sinuses on the top. I chose to do same day surgery. The surgery itself was very fast and lasted only 45 minutes for all four teeth. I was prescribed ample pain meds, the office did a nice follow up call to ensure everything was going well and now a week later I am nearly back to normal! Highly recommend! read more

1st Dr Casillas prices was higher than all other surgeons around. 2nd i was willing to pay $1000 in cash and asked the remainder $560 to please be billed to me. I was suffering from a potential life threatening abscess traveling into my neck. When i asked to speak with the Dr Casillas about possible payment plan he sent his MOTHER into tell me they demanded full payment at time of service. Goes to show no care for the human being just his $$$!. Never have i felt treated as less than a person as when i was forced to leave his office in severe pain and concern for my well being. read more

I was very pleased with all staff and Dr. Gissell was very patient and kind throughout my procedure. I went in before Christmas 2016 for a procedure and it went well. The doctor called later in the day to see how I was doing. A couple of days later, I was still feeling the pain, so I called the office and they saw me right away. He checked the socket and it looked good, so thankful for no dry socket ...prescribed an oral rinse to dull the pain and within a day, I was feeling better ..... How awful! My sister went in to have ALL four wisdom teeth removed. Her appt. Was at 2, & She sat in the waiting room for 3-4 hours before she was even seen. On top of that she even WOKE UP to them drilling in her mouth. She's been in a crazy amount of pain for SIX days. We never got a follow-up appt. which I think is awful.. I mean, at this point- It should be getting better at this point, not getting worse!! DO NOT take your loved ones here.. read more

Dr. Casillas is our oral surgeon. My children have needed many extractions and Dr. Casillas and his staff have always been attentive and caring. Recently, my son had 4 extractions all at the same time and was very nervous. The nurses were wonderful and took great care of my son. I would not recommend this horrid place. Very unprofessional and not so clean. This location or the southwest military location is NOT where you want to be when your having teeth issues. We were told that I needed to be sedated however after getting a second opinion, it was unnecessary. This second opinion saved me $300!! Talk about trying to swindle us out of our money! In turn Dr Casillas was rude to his patient by saying since he was late (15min) he refused to see him and proceeded to leave the office to go to the Blanco location. Just plain rude. The only reason I gave them 1 star is because ONE employee was nice and sweet. You have been warned. read more

I had outpatient surgery today in the office on Blanco road with Dr. Haverkorn. I had been to two dentists previously trying to get 3 wisdom teeth pulled but they wouldn't touch them. I was in so much pain last week I found this place and called. They made me an appointment for today and 8:45 am with consultation and possible surgery. They accepted my BCBS plan so I went with it. I arrived with low expectations because I figured it would be the same, sorry that they couldn't do it. I was pleased to find out they could! I waited in the waiting room for maybe 15 min. (Doing forms and insurance benefits) They took me back did some X-rays and consultation. Dr. H was great at answering all of my questions and explaining exactly what he would do. They gave me IV sedation I was out in a min. Woke up what felt like one min. Later with a light pressure in my face. The technician said total treatment was 35 min. (Amazing!) i like people who get to the point and get it done. I am now at home with a bag of pain killers and anti nausea medication no longer bleeding 8 hours later writing this review. Best experience I've ever had! The office is beautiful as well. The treatment room had a huge window wall to see outside. I would highly recommend! Dr. H and the technician that prepped me and helped with it did awesome! Thank you! read more

The consultation was wonderful. I felt comfortable and assured of my well-being. I have never had any type of surgery before - only one other sedation, so this may be a little biased. It would have been nice if my doctor was not in a foul mood upon arrival to my surgery. It would have been nice to know I would keep waking up during the procedure. It would have been nice to know that my decision to forego the steroids for swelling was a bad one. I decided against them because of complications with another medical issue and the nurse just said "Okay! We won't use steroids." It would have been nice to know that this inch-and-a-half-long hole in my cheek is NOT supposed to be there, would further irritate the swelling, and I would be spending 15 minutes after every meal washing noodles or bread out of my wound. It would have been nice to know the possibility of a high fever, chills, and swollen lymph nodes during the following days. It would be nice to have a doctor that is up-to-date on other medications their patients are on that will slow the recovery process. I knew more about my medication than he did. I would still like to know how long my lower lip, chin, and ears will be numb. I was not made aware of bruised nerves until I called the rudest answering service ever. It would have been FANTASTIC to have even had a follow-up call, now 5 days later, after I was already referred to the ER from Urgent Care as the weekend on-call nurse was rude and unhelpful. The ER was appalled. Still no call. No recommendation here. read more

So where do I start? Yesterday my husband went into this office on Blanco, to see Dr. Casillas. Just to give a quick history, he was in pain for two months on the side of his face. He went to several Drs and specialists and was mis-diagnosed with several different disorders, from TMJ, to trigeminal neuralgia...was put on anti-convulsants and nerve medications. The day before, his face swelled up to the size of a baseball. It was then, after ER visits, and going to the facial pain specialist, that someone was finally able to tell us what is really wrong with my husband. He had an abscess in his molar and it had been building up for months, and he needed the tooth to be extracted! So I was relieved to finally have an answer, Our dentist referred us to Dr. Casillas. We got there, and filled out the paperwork. They were a few minutes away to sedating him for surgery, and a woman came in and demanded payment. For $1500. This is the week before Christmas too by the way, and we informed them that we could give them $1000 cash today, and we would pay the remaining $500 the following month. We also explained that we cant put anything on our credit cards, because we are in the middle of re-financing our houses. She didn't seem to care one bit. I think the lady was the Dr's mother. We also requested to please speak with the Dr but he was too much of a coward to come in and talk with us. The office manager was extremely rude to us, no one seemed to care that my husband was literally on the verge of death, if this infection spread any further down to his heart, and in excrutiating pain. They just wanted their money. So we walked out, and an angel answered the phone at another dentist office and told us to head over. They only asked for the $1000 cash we had and they performed the surgery immediately. Not to mention every staffer there was so kind and caring and helpful. So glad we walked out of this place and will never have to go there again. They are clearly about the money there and not the patient. read more

I had called at the beginning of the month to get two teeth extracted.I set an appointment for a certain day. 3!dats before the apt I call to verify everything was set to go to find out they had me at a different location that I did not agree at & a different day. No stars!!! My son saw Dr. Parker at the wurzbach location... Dr. Parker is a great physician however his staff is incompetent and Will tell you anything you want to hear just to get you in the door. Consultation was great.. We were given an estimated of surgery amount however a week before surgery it jumped up $1100 and was told it had to be paid in full before the px could be done. Had I known this 1 month in advance, no problem! I then asked to speak to the practice manager (even asked to speak to Dr) I was told by PM that Dr Parker really had no authority to make policy decisions and basically had NO say in this matter. I wonder if Dr Parker would like to know that his PM speaks so highly of him? Anyhow, I decided to go through with procedure but never did I receive a call on a time to be there. Here it is a day before surgery with NO pre surgery instructions from anyone on what to do/not to do before going under anesthesia! What kind of surgery center does this? How can I allow this type of facility to have the best interest of my son? I have cancelled the surgery and this dr is now out $2000! Rather put the $ towards a facility that will do it right! No telling how the service would be had we gone through with it and have to have post op issues! read more
