Good people working there - so helpful - many cute dogs that need homes - young and old - adopt don't buy !

My husband and I went there to adopt a kitten on Friday 7/24. I had seen the kittens the day before and wanted my husband to see them to make sure he also wanted that kitten. First we went and looked at them all and nobody came by. A woman who sits at a desk and unfortunately we don't know her name was going by and we asked if somebody could show us the kitten we wanted. There were 2 snuggled together in the back of the enclosure and all we could see was a ball of white fur. She said they are not allowed to take them out. My husband said how can that be, we want to adopt one of them but we can't tell which is the one. She was very rude to my husband, saying it was there protocol but would not answer his questions. My husband was upset, said we want to pay $200 for a kitten we can't even see, That's ridiculous! She walked away from us not offering any help for us! I wanted to leave and I have adopted prior and donated tons of stuff. Not to mention I do rabbit rescue of euthanasia, abused and dumped bunnies for over 30 years and Thursday this same woman gave 3 young children around 3-5yrs each a treat to give the bunnies. I was shocked that she did that being bunnies will bite little fingers. A vet tech appeared to care for some kittens and he was extremely nice and went and got a girl Emily who came over, checked the microchip, picked up the kitten. all with gloves and took care of us throughout the adoption, She is the type person who should be working there! A person named Alice I think also was rude telling me the same BS as the rude woman. Being in the rescue circle and well known in HRS I feel that I will definitely let people know about your so called protocol. 2 years ago, our neighborhood senior feral kitty was badly beaten up by a neighbor's indoor/outdoor cat. Her tail was stripped, and I was concerned it would be amputated. Another neighbor had previously had her spayed. I took her to SDHS's Oceanside location. They were able to treat her tail, shaved her belly to confirm the spay, and trimmed her ear (we now refer to her as lop eared Lucy). Considering her advanced age of at least 13 at the time, I brought her home and rather than releasing her back outside she retired from feral life and now enjoys her days basking in the sun, eating as much as she wants, and ruling the roost. The kind people at SDHS gave this old feral girl a second chance. She's a funny little kitty and very low maintenance after years on the street. I love this silly little girl. Staff was friendly and organized. One thing to note is that although there were several staffers working on a Saturday, it did take a while to actually get a viewing time. It makes me sad that anyone could write a bad review about this place. It's made up of extremely compassionate humans who are just doing their best to help these animals. And they are phenomenal at what they do! The SDHS Oceanside campus quite literally saved my cats life. Bilba was attacked by another animal (most likely a coyote) and was brought into their care in horrible shape. They ended up needing to amputate her back leg, and she is recovering now and sooo much happier as a tripaw girl! I am forever indebted to the medical team and all staff at SDHS. No amount of thanks is enough. When my kids get a little older I am definitely going to become a volunteer as a small way to give back. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to SDHS Oceanside for not giving up on sweet Bilba and going above and beyond for all of these animals. Three weeks ago our beloved fur baby passed away. My heart has been shattered. I wasn't sure if I wanted another cat/kitten. I've been talking with my fur baby asking him if it would be ok. That we weren't replacing him but giving our love to a fur baby who had no home. Honestly felt we were getting signs that it was ok. We first went to the Escondido site. Felt it was a little chaotic. Didn't really click with any of the cats. Decided to go to the Oceanside site on Airport Rd. When you first walk in, we were greeted by two really nice people working the front desk. We told them we were there to look at cats. They directed us to the room where they were at, along with bunnies and guinea pigs. You walk through a little store that has basic supplies. We walked around and looked at all the cats. A few caught our eye. One very handsome fellow, Diego, would have been our 1st choice. Unfortunately he doesn't like other cats. We had decided we wanted two. So we had to pass on this handsome guy. Oh but his purrs were so charming. My husband found a pair of sisters that grabbed his attention. Needless to say, Lulu & Pinta came home with us. Checking in to adopt was super easy. The wait was a little long. But there were short staffed so we waited. We were able to meet with Lulu & Pinta. And we for sure decided to bring them home. The adoption process was very thorough and pretty quick. We were told a little bit more about the girls and their heath. We were also given a bag of food for them. All through the month of November, adoptions for cats are $20. I just wish when people got a pet, that their lives are as long as ours. Keep them and love them for their lifetime. read more

Had a wonderful experience adopting our newest kitty! The staff was beyond helpful and the volunteers were kind. The staff was extraordinarily patient as we took our time finding the perfect match. Obi (previously Spielberg) has already adjusted so well to us as his new family, and really enjoys following his big brother around 24/7! When I think of humane society they always fills my heart with love without the humane society there would be a lot more animals being killed and a lot of families would miss out on some incredible dogs cats birds and otherwise without the humane society and in fact I have the pleasure of knowing an incredible female pit her name is Mo now but when she was in the Oceanside humane society her name was cookie a black and white pit mix she's an incredible dog she's lovable she loves hugs and kisses and I love her and she loves me most people think of pitbull of being aggressive but not her so lovable I don't know what I'd do without her in my life she's not actually my child that I consider my child to without the humane society I would have never met such an incredible dog thank you very much humane society I wish I knew names for the people that help rescue her because I give them all a big hug mo it's such incredible dog/daughter never think that the humane society doesn't have anything to offer to you you might go into the with a certain animal in mind when you go in and meet these incredible animals and there different personalities you almost want to take them all home my name is Thomas Sager and I thank everyone at humane society for all of there great work that you do read more

This review is long postponed! About a month ago, we adopted guinea pigs from this shelter. It was quite simple unlike other shelters. We just told them we were looking to get guinea pigs and they put us on a waitlist to see an adoption agent, we waited while browsing all the available guinea pigs. We waited for about ~30ish minutes which gave us a good amount of time to see which ones we liked and could see having for 5-8 years. Then an adoption agent got to us and took out the guinea pigs we asked for and gave us a little paperwork. We then had to pay 30$ for Both (2) guinea pigs!! Which is very little money considering they cost each 50$ at petco, we were so happy we even donated 20$. Thank you for our pigs! Just want to add they don't label their guinea pigs breed correctly, they said they were both American crested but turns out one was an abysinnian and one was a sheltie. read more

However, you did not mention the actions of the front desk receptionist's behavior and how THAT would be addressed. This organization has been a blessing to all animal lovers and I fully support your mission to assist all animals in need . Plus all the volunteers -cheers and bravo.! But, rude and disrespectful employees are not what you expect being greeted at your facility. This attitude was highly inappropriate and, I felt like she could just care less I was waiting. When I left too, just could not be bothered to help me! Her training, and customer service skills are extremely lacking and reflects in the negative on your business. Our vet directed me to go online to the San Diego County website to upload paperwork to pay for the girls' licenses... I was about to make copies of their rabies certificates (I was planning to mail copies with a check instead) when I mentioned my numerous tasks to a friend. She told me to just come here. The whole process was SO easy! The clerk did everything on his computer; I simply had to bring the proof of rabies vaccinations and pay by cash or credit card. Their tags will arrive in the mail in 7-10 days. A huge plus is, this place has its own parking lot with a security guard. The street was full of homeless encampments and parking was minimal along San Luis Rey, so I was pretty grateful. Overall, a very awesome experience. I've also visited numerous times to look at the dogs, but have never adopted one from here yet. I have never had a pet before. Now that I am an empty nester I decided to get a cat. I searched the internet for info and found the Humane Society in Oceanside. The staff were very helpful and kind. I told them what I was hoping to find and they showed me the kittens. I chose one and began the adoption process. They gave me a lot of resources for caring for a kitten. They provided a carrier box with a blanket for me to transport my kitten home. They gave me a bag of Purina cat kibble. And to top it off they waived the adoption fees because I am a military veteran. I was so grateful for the help in going through this process. The staff even clapped and congratulated me as I left the building. If you are feeling intimidated by the process of adoption, because it's unfamiliar, then this is the place to go. They will help you every step of the way. They won't judge you, question your choices, or try to push some other pet on you . I left there feeling very positive read more

I was not due to me as an adopter, they were willing to find me another cat in their system, but they decided this was a hostile cat. deigning her to be released to a good home who would work with her on her terms. Clearly a power grab by people with a limited chance to control events taking it out on the cat who has been at the shelter for 6 month, return twice with no one really working on her behavior issues. think twice before supporting them. Never bring stray animals here, they are a high kill shelter. We brought in a stray cat and it was euthanized the same day, they didn't call to warn us or give us a chance to bring it to the vet despite telling them we would. I called a week later to check on the cat and they lied to me, saying it was still alive. I called another week later and was finally told it was killed the same day I brought it in. The cat was eating and in good spirits when we brought it in and they wouldn't tell us why it was killed. I also will never understand why I was lied to on the phone. Please do not bring stray animals here, there are other responsible shelters that care about animals and do not euthanize. read more

This review is for the Oceanside Small Animal Campus of the San Diego Humane Society. We had a wonderful experience with the Humane Society when my daughter and her boyfriend adopted a cat from their San Diego animal shelter. We were incredibly impressed with the high level of care and concern shown to all the animals up for adoption. We even called the San Diego campus the Ritz-Carlton of animal shelters due to its beautiful decor and impeccable cleanliness. So, when it came time to find a home for two cats belonging to a family member who could no longer care for them, we immediately contacted the San Diego Humane Society. We were directed to the Oceanside small animal campus (there is another campus in Oceanside for dogs.) The staff at the Oceanside campus (especially Deborah, Bree and Kaylin) were incredibly helpful in arranging our appointment to relinquish the cats and ensured that euthanasia is not an option *at all* for their organization (the only excpetion being terminal illness of the animal). Every animal in their care receives veterinary exams and immunizations, as well as room and board. (There is a nominal charge for relinquishing the animals.) The staff took a very thorough history for each cat to ensure that they find a good match for adoption. They asked about history, preferences and personality of each cat. Every single staff member at this campus showed a very high level of professionalism and concern for all the animals in their care. We can rest assured that our cats will find a happy home and be well taken care of in the meantime. While we were waiting for our appointment, a gentleman came in with a stray cat he had found in the neighborhood. They were able to take the cat in right away. So if you're looking for a cat to adopt, found a homeless cat on the street, or have to find a new home for your cat, San Diego Humane Society is the cat's meow. read more

Animals are great... but conditions for them are terrible. Especially the poor bunnies. But I adopted our newest family member there. He loves attention and I felt bad I couldn't take his sister... but he was dying for attention and still is. The staff that did help me were nice. Made the process easy. And honestly for those who complain about adoption fees, especially for the kittens and young animals, you gotta understand they get their vaccines, are microchipped, and spayed or neutered. All that cost money regardless of how old they are and get. So honestly you're saving money and a life. If only they kept the cages and spaces clean. Our little guy has dried poop all over his back legs and I can't really wash it yet because he was just neutered and can't get him wet. But he's a cutie and we couldn't love him more already. read more

Visited several rescues before finding our new fur babies at the Oceanside Humane Society . Besides finding the purrfect kittens we met the most wonderful staff. Donna listened to our lifestyle and what we were looking for in a bonded pair of kittens. She knew exactly which kittens we needed to meet and we fell in love! The facility is incredibly clean and spacious. The animals are well cared for and loved. Everyone we met during the process clearly loves the animals and cares about where they are placed. There is TWO incidents in the last TWO weeks where SD Humane Society was called to pick up 2 stray dogs. They never showed up. They DO NOT CARE. They get 16 million dollars A YEAR, and they clearly do not care about animals or their wellbeing. Not to mention, the 400 small animals the CEO and COO shipped to a live BREEDER for profit. As I just called to make a complaint about SD Humane Society not picking up both stray dogs the last few weeks - SHE HUNG UP ON ME. She was also very agitated that I was concerned why they are not doing their job properly. She claims they can't capture dogs - they did not' even attempt! I am so upset I even have to write this. My boyfriend and I came in yesterday morning with the hopes of leaving with a cat. We luckily got along with a cat name Beatrix and decided on adopting her. While in the adoption process, a on site vet noticed what looked like a hernia on Beatrix. We were informed she was going to get X-Rays to see the severity of the injury. After what was literally 5 minutes, they came back out and let us know Beatrix was ok and she just had some inflammation around her incisions from getting spayed. The vet informed us that with some anti inflammatory medication she would be okay. We proceeded to adopt her due to the vets assuring us that this was just a minor inflammation and would go down within a few days. Flash forward to today at 5:30pm. My boyfriend notices her incisions are swollen so bad and bleeding. By the time we called the Humane Society they were closed and unable to assist. Now she is currently in emergency surgery as I write this. With a diagnosis of a hernia, inflammation, and potential tissue damage. I am disappointed that the humane society vet took so little time to properly asses my cat and ensure she was healthy and ok. They down played her injury and seemingly just wanting to get her adopted and out of there. I don't wish to return my cat. But I do wish to be compensated/reimbursed. Not only has this cost well over a $1000 but also caused me emotional trauma. I hope the humane society can adhere to their "adoption guarantee: love your pet..or let us know. We'll make it right" because this is just unacceptable. read more

Used to be a great place to get your pet vaccinated. Not anymore. Appointments were running 30+ minutes late. You're not allowed to go inside to get an update. They'll make you stand outside with your pet in the scorching sun waiting to get called in. That small canopy is a joke when there's multiple people with big dogs waiting for their turn. While waiting I saw pets run away from the staff squeezing themselves between their windows and blinds while staff was scrambling to catch the pets and set up foldable plastic tables as barriers. A few people squeezed out the main door looking like pets were about to run away at any second. Guess that's why they make you wait outside and won't allow you to open the door. A complete mess, after waiting for half an hour we left and took out pet to a private provider who knew their stuff and didn't waste our time. read more

I adopted a kitten that they told me had no fleas. I found fleas on the kitten and immediately gave her a flea bath. Unfortunately, the kitten had already met my resident cat and passed the fleas along to him as well. I called the humane society to let them know I would have never adopted a kitten with fleas for the sake of my resident cat. My resident cat is a strictly indoor cat and fear of fleas is one of the reasons. The woman who answered was not helpful and said that fleas are common and all their animals are checked for fleas (apparently with the exception of my kitten). She mentioned that my kittens vaccination plan should have included information about getting her flea medication. There was nothing of the sort included in the plan. I'm very disappointed that they would let me take home a kitten with fleas and were not helpful at all over the phone. read more

The location is easy to find with lots of parking. Appointments are for cats and small dogs only. I usually only come here if it's the only available location with an appointment because it's too far from where I live. I haven't had major problems here, but it definitely could use some improvements such as better customer service and care for people's pets. I felt like the employee taking care of my two cats today didn't want to be there, and completely overlooked that my cat pooped in the carrier. She told me she tried to clean most of it, but there was a whole poop next to my cat, and on top of the carrier (that wasn't there before I dropped her off). I wasn't sure what she meant when she said she cleaned most of it because I didn't see any evidence of that. But overall I'd come to this location if I had to. read more

I called to ask regarding rabies vaccination appointment and after being on hold for 12 minutes she answered, heard my question, then hung up on me. I called back and was on hold for 25 minutes. Same associate (Sasha) answered and I said: Sasha, do NOT hang up on me again, ok?. She didn't deny it. She answered my question very shortly and then hung up. I have been using this location for years and have never been treated like this. Sasha, I don't know if you were having a bad day or something else but you don't need to take it out on others. I just hope you treat the animals you care for better than this because they cannot complain like I can. read more

We adopted little Pepper from the San Diego Humane in Escondido. All the people were great in helping us to find which pet would a best fit for me and my daughter. They supplied us with a nice bag of puppy food and all the back ground/medical information on Pepper. For the cost of the adoption ($200), little Pepper is spayed and all the shots for for her age. read more

Went in for a dog and found one with nothing but positive things to say from the staff. Take him home and take for a walk. Introduce new and old dog in a neutral area. Separate at night for sleep. The next day, dog charges my wife and attacks her and injured old dog. Very sad about the situation, but feel like dog was not represented truthfully by staff. Update: when on the phone with officer to tell her about how the dog acted, she laughed after and showed no empathy while I was at the ER waiting on my wife to get stitched up. read more

I have not raised a kitten before, so I had a lot of questions, but she was very knowledgeable and answered them all. Overall it was a great experience and I love my new furry companion! Their urgent animal distress line is terrible. I called this morning because a dog had been crying/yelping next door from one small spot in the yard that'a not visible unless I hop their security fence. No one is home. Dog's been crying ALL day (8 hours now), and although the dog's cries are much weaker, its still crying. I'm concerned it's caught or trapped in something. The first agent I spoke to told me that because I couldn't see the dog, they wouldnt send anyone because "it's against the law." He then hung up on me. I called back, got another agent who took the report and placed a welfare check. Hours later, the dog still crying, I called back. I spoke with the same agent I made my report to. She said that someone had come out a couple of hours ago, didnt hear anything, and left. Idk how they couldn't hear this, perhaps because they went to the front door and the cries are coming from the back of the propert. Regardless, they haven't done a thing to check on this dog who's been crying for 8+ hours. This is where our local tax dollars are going. Shameful. read more

DO NOT TRUST THE ANIMAL PHYSICAL REPORT! I adopted a dog from here, he had itchy skin and missing patches of hair, he is missing the ENTIRETY of his front bottom teeth and all the report said was "chipped tooth". I should've posted something when I first got the dog and sincerely apologize to anyone that may have been bamboozled prior to me posting this. He is a super sweet boy though and i'm glad that he is finally in good care. read more
