Absolutely unacceptable experience at Surfside Animal Hospital. I brought my dog in with a BROKEN LEG and paid good money for what I thought was professional care. After taking X-rays, I was told she would be fine with just a splint and that surgery was NOT needed. I trusted that advice, because that's what you're supposed to be able to do when you go to a vet. Days later, I get a voicemail from Dr. Goren admitting that after "really reviewing" the X-rays -- including images they already had but somehow didn't properly review -- they now believe my dog actually DOES need surgery and that it may not heal correctly without it. So my dog was sent home in pain with the WRONG treatment plan because they didn't even fully review her imaging the first time? That is not a small mistake. That is negligence. This delay could have serious consequences for my dog's recovery, all because of a lack of attention to detail. What makes this even worse is the emotional stress and complete betrayal of trust this has caused. As a pet owner, you rely on professionals to guide you during scary situations like this, and instead I was given false reassurance that directly impacted my dog's care. I paid for professional care and instead got careless decision-making and a complete lack of thoroughness. Now my dog may have to go through more pain, more stress, and more expense because of their mistake. If your pet has anything serious going on, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else or get a second opinion immediately. I would not trust this place with my pet's health again. read more

Gary Siebert was my dogs Vet for a few years and he was wonderful. Unfortunately he retired and when my dog had a cyst that got infected I took her to Surfside and Jessica Laemmle was available that day. She told me my dog needed surgery because she thought her cyst was cancer. I told her that 3 Vets including Siebert had told me that her cysts were all benign. Furthermore, she just needed antibiotics for the infection. She gave me antibiotics and my dog healed within a few days. Even the Vet tech knew Laemmle was incompetent and untruthful. read more

We've used Seaside Vets for years, the vets Dr. Colloca in particular and, technicians and even the reception staff were all brilliant during every visit. While not inexpensive, one gets what they pay for. We've spent $XXXXs on our labradoodle Kona and every penny was well spent. The expertise of Dr Colloca during routine examinations discovered pancreatitis (resolved), a cancerous tumor on her anal gland (resolved via specialist referral), a torn knee ligament (resolved via specialist referral), etc. etc. Brilliant, professional and friendly/passionate towards our doodle. To save a few $ we always had prescriptions for Kona filled via Costco pharmacy but, since our last refill, the clinic changed its policy towards its customers and now requires the use of a Surfside they apparently have a business arrangement with. "We don't work with Costco any more, you have to now use our pharmacy.". I asked that Kona's prescription be sent to us as an attachment (they did this before with 2 prescriptions) but no, we had to use their pharmacy or, come in and get a written prescription to give to Costco personally. We drove up to Oceanside (nightmare Monday traffic), got the prescription and I asked that all of Kona's medical records be sent to me via email attachment which was done. For a stupid $140 prescription, Seaside just turned off a revenue stream with a history of $XXXXs in the past. There are so many veterinarian options in North Country (and San Diego). Surfside is now History. Oh, the receptionist mentioned Dr Colloca isn't at the clinic any longer. I can't imagine why. read more

They have done a flawless job at taking care of my dogs. Both have had their fair share of ear infections and Dr. Nicola does a fantastic job with providing me medication that not only helps cure but soothe the pain. Not to mention she loves my fur babies like they are her own. My Yorkie always looks forward to visits with her! The receptionists are always friendly as well. Highlights: let's starts with what's important! They are great with handling our anxious, temperamental, and sassy fur family members. They listen to you and are just as nice to the humans as they are to the furry friends. The office does not to charge you just to charge you. They explain all charges BEFORE they do anything and welcome any questions you have. Every time I have gone in they were very upfront on how and when to have services done so our pup would be healthy and so would our bank accounts! It is a very clean office. They even leave out bags in front in case your pup overuses the potty. Note the candle at check in. There is a note that says to be mindful if the candle is lit as someone is saying goodbye to their fur baby. I have never seen this anywhere else and it such a respectful way to support their clients and their families. read more

Ok how do I start, I have two dogs one is a rescue. My budget is limited like everyone these days. I was refilling the flea and worm pills on their website which was $200 and the denied my refill to get another stool sample that was all ready done 3 months ago that was negative. This place is horrendous. We've been going there for 20 years as owner of 3 cats. We are senior citizens & live on a limited budget. Every visit the prices go up & the customer service goes down. We can't even get flea medication for our 2 cats without expensive appointments. My husband was actually threatened on the phone, 'we won't take care of your cats anymore ...your weeks late for your annual check up' Yes we do have to schedule around our budget (because they raise the prices so much & add so many charges.) Today we tried to get summertime flea medication for both cats & they said No only one cat, the other has to wait for your appointment next week.' We had to make an emergency trip last month for my reactive Australian cattle dog, Dash, who needed stitches. It was a scary situation but the front desk lady (Lisa?) was so helpful and got us in right away. Dash is still working through leash-reactivity and terrified of strangers so bringing him in is a stressful situation that I try to mitigate by keeping distance between us and other patients, muzzled, a cocktail of downers, and all the treats. The staff was so sweet and he ended up being very trusting of his vet tech, Ms. Catherine! It almost brought tears to my eyes because building those relationships with him usually takes multiple meetings. I have been taking my animals to Surfside Animal Hospital on Mission and Oceanside for at least 25 years. I felt compelled to put a post on yelp because of the warm and sincere care that they give to my dog Oliver. It starts with Jessica who my dog just adores so much it almost makes me jealous. She is so kind and loving it just warms my heart. It doesn't stop there, though the rest of the staff were also very kind and efficient. Danni @ the front desk, Kristin, who took my dog for his shot and Dr. Brennan, who was very patient with my excited boy. I can't thank you all enough for making my visit such a pleasure. Those were just the names that I knew, but there was also a young lady that I can only describe had some great tattoos that also showed special attention to my excited boy. I have been living here in oceanside for about 4 years and thought that the vets here were very expensive. After taking my 2 dogs to La Habra vets in Orange County, where I lived for 35 years. Now I see how much la habra was charging me for halie my shitzi's ear infections snd other allergies. Continously back for alot of the same things. Her ears got black because they were so infected that poor baby was not comfortable. Then I found Surfside vet decided to try them. Im glad i did. Dr. Nicole Garcia, who is now taking care of her ears. Dr. Has done an amazing job in getting the black out of halies ears and now I can say they are the best vets. No more driving to Orange County. Staff is very friendly and professional. Senior or military discount given. One thing I don't like is that if a technician gives my dogs a shot, clean their ears etc. Not only are you paying for the shot, cleaning etc. You are also paying the tech for their service. High staff turnover They are never on time I always arrive early for our appointments only to wait sometimes up to an hour My puppies on a medication for allergies normally they take blood and then they give her a year prescription. We were out of refills so I scheduled the appointment for the bloodwork with the understanding. If everything was OK we would get our prescription well everything's OK but they want to see her in three months for her yearly checkup so they gave me a three month prescription for the Allergy medication. I called and said no I want my year. We did the Blood Work and they said no we have to do her yearly to give her another prescription and I said well it's kind of funny how the prescription last time was for a year and it just expired so obviously something is a little different this time around they wouldn't Budge. I had a LONG review typed out but deleted it all to keep it simple. Surfside saved my younger cat in 2020 during the pandemic. She had surgery to remove a blockage in her intestine. She had lost about 40% of her body weight due to other vets misdiagnosing. I was referred here by another vet that wanted 4 times the amount of $$ for the surgery. Just recently, my older cat had an anal gland abscess. I went straight to surfside and the removal procedure was done. She is finally back to her normal self and I can't thank surfside enough. I recently moved to the area and needed a new Vet. This was the closest to me and my boyfriend had used them in the past with no issue, so it seemed perfect. I only had one visit and then looked for a new Vet. Here's why: Had to pre-pay just to schedule an appointment (strange). The front desk people were not knowledgeable or friendly. When my dog was prescribed some medication, they called me to say it was ready but when I went to pick it up, it wasn't ready. They prepared it for me while I waited. Then they called me a couple days later to tell me, again, the prescription was ready (?!). Just incompetent. Also, Cytopoint injections are $180!! My old vet in San Diego charged $126. I found a nice vet in Vista that is a drive, but worth it. read more

Brought my dog here for her vaccines and they take great care of her and are pretty quick! I had a hard time making an appointment online for some reason but calling in was easy. Once you arrive for your appointment, you call in and wait in your car for someone to come out to have you sign papers and take your dog in. Unsatisfactory Service! My husband serves in the Marine Corps, and we are preparing to relocate across the country with our two cats. On 7/5, I placed an order on Chewy for anxiety medication. Chewy requested approval from my vet, but I never received any updates regarding my order. Upon contacting Chewy, they instructed me to reach out to my vet for approval, because Surfside did not want Chewy calling them directly. I contacted Surfside, and although the staff indicated they would leave a note for the vet, they persistently pressured me to schedule an appointment. It's important to note that my cat already had a consultation in February. Upon my follow-up call, Surfside informed me that the vet refuses to provide the medication unless we schedule an appointment. This office's sole focus seems to be financial gain! As a responsible pet owner striving to ensure my cats' comfort during this stressful time, this experience has been incredibly exasperating. Had taken my dog there for three years. Service was fine. Then last week my dog needed an emergency gastronomy, and the emergency vet found my poor girl was suffering from end stage untreated diabetes. We had to put my sweet 11 year old pup to sleep. The problem is, I had been bringing the poor thing to Surfside for YEARS. At every appointment I brought up that my dog drank tons of water, sometimes had accidents, had cataracts on her eyes, etc. Tons of UTI meds etc later, but diabetes was never mentioned. Now, in hindsight when I look up symptoms of diabetes in dogs, it seems obvious. I would think twice about trusting them with my next dog. read more

As a long time client, I am sorry to say, I will not go back to this office again. Over the years the experience with this office has steadily deteriorated. Customer service is nonexistent. The wait times are inexplicably too long (expect each appointment to take 1-1/2 hrs or more, start to finish) However, appointment times are difficult to obtain and often granted with all the charm of a DMV clerk. The fee rates are quite high for everything. While I think the Vets are very good (Dr. Seibert the best!!!) everything else is broken. My last experience went as follows: My very sweet but ridiculously anxious hound developed a growth on a toe. After examination the doc recommended labs, x-ray(suggested but not required), histology and surgery. We also discussed in depth, my dog's anxiety issues (4th of July, new years, smoke detector alarms and thunder storms, you get the idea). Medications prescribed for these occasions in the past, not only failed to ease but actually exacerbated it with other issues. The doc recommended an alternate medication and exam was done. The Vet Tech enters, presents me with a billing estimate ranging from just under $1700 to $2500!!!! Just, Jaw dropping.....This surgery was not into a body cavity but for his toe. I was taken aback. I asked the tech to give me 24 hrs for a call back to confirm scheduling the labs, surgery etc. I would pay for the office visit, meds and call in the morning. I was sent to the waiting area. Some time later, a different vet tech approaches me to inquire if I know and understand how to use the medication prescribed. I assured her the doc and I had clear discussion on the topic and I understood its use. She seemed unsatisfied with my reply. She repeated the question several times. I repeatedly stated I understood the purpose and use of the medication. Confused and irritated, I advised her if she was uncomfortable, to confer with the doc regarding her concerns. She disappears to the back office. On her return, again asks me the same question. I told her, I thought we covered this already. I don't know what the magic code word is, yes I understand, is not enough. At this point, I advised her to forget about the medication and would like to check out. It took another 20 minutes to get the bill. So, after nearing two hours, I was shocked, stressing over a $2500 bill, pissed off thoroughly over the interaction with the vet tech, frustrated at the excessive time it takes to process billing and check out! Add to all this, two days later Surfside called leaving a message, I could come and pickup the medication!!!! As if.... I have since taken my pooch to another vet. His office is farther to go but worth the drive for many reasons. read more

I've been coming to Surfside since it opened after following Dr. Siebert here. They called him the "cat whisperer," and he was amazing! I was very sad when he retired, but I stayed. Recently, everything changed. I don't know who any of these people are. I feel like I'm dealing with a "Stepford Wives" vet hospital. It doesn't even seem real. Care, compassion, friendliness, communication, listening, understanding, smiles, the heart left warm and content, "ALL GONE!" Not sure what's going on, but sadly, I don't know this place anymore. Hello yelp, I am truly disappointed to have to write this review. We chose Surfside Animal Hospital as our veterinarian because several of our very dear friends have pets under their care. I've heard good things about them. All the nurses we encountered at Surfside were helpful concerned and attentive. This review is not a reflection of the nursing staff. Even after this experience, I'm confident my friends will use Surfside. I however cannot. I'm a home school mom with a torn rotator cuff, about to have surgery. We got our 1 pound, 9 1/2 week old Teacup Morkie Puppy for our 8 year old daughter 5 weeks prior to my surgery. We took Cinnamon and her poop sample (cost $62.50 + visit $52.50) to Surfside for a well puppy exam. Results showed roundworms (meds resolved it immediately) and Giardia (an intestinal parasite, contagious to humans), for which meds and diligent home care were started. I was eager to integrate the pup into the household, but limited due to the Giardia. So, in accordance with Surfside advice, 10 days after the last med dose was given, I took another poop sample for testing, (cost - $62.50) Unfortunately Giardia was still present. Cinnamon was thriving, in treatment for the diagnosed illnesses. She went to bed fine, then woke with projectile vomiting, weakness, lethargy and bloody diarrhea. Completely unaware of the cause, we maintained communication with Surfside all day. Despite ongoing home care, by evening she had to be hospitalized. There was another result on the second fecal result Surfside overlooked. It was an aggressive, physically damaging parasite, Coccidia, that attacks and destroys intestinal lining. So for seven days after the lab result, Cinnamon did not get treated for the Coccidia. 12 hours into Cinnamon's hospitalization, Surfside told me about the Coccidia diagnosis they missed. Before discharge, I asked them to reconsider the $1300.00 hospital bill. The head nurse Rosie argued, but after reviewing the chart and consulting with the doctors, admitted and apologized for the oversight completely. I itemized the invoice with them and agreed to pay for the following for that night: - Office visit $52.50 - Blood panel $189.50 - Parvo Test $64.00 - Glucose $40.00 x 2 doses is $80.00 (second dose was given in error according to Dr. Boise, and was way too much, putting Cinnamon in hyper glycemia) She is 1 pound. How much glucose could you / should you give?? $80.00?? Really?? - Medications $78.00 TOTAL $464.00 I paid $464.00 for the Coccidia symptoms. I figured, even if the Coccidia was being treated, I may have actually gotten these tests. And of course I will pay for her meds. I asked that the additional $327.00 hospital fees be waived due to Surfside's failure to treat the Coccidia diagnosis for seven days in a very small animal. Dr. Boise refuses. I volunteered an extra fecal test for the very purpose of proactively addressing and resolving any existing health issues prior to my shoulder surgery. Had the Coccidia med Albon been prescribed 12/19, when the positive result appeared, emergency hospitalization would not have been required 7 days later on 12/26 to address the life threatening effects of untreated Coccidia in our pet. Despite this clearly documented and undisputed fact, Dr. Boise refuses to waive the remaining hospitalization fees. She indicated she would rather lose our business than accept the full financial responsibility ($327.00) for her own negligence. When I tried to persuade Dr. Boise by reminding her of the friends who recommended me, she accused me of threatening her. I am Thoroughly Disgusted by Dr. Boise's Blatant Negligent Malpractice, as well as her Uninhibited Verbal Expressions showing a Complete Absence of Basic Human Integrity. When Mistakes happen, consequences should be handled fairly. I should have gotten a call saying "Mrs. Morris, we made a mistake, don't worry about a thing." Instead Surfside did not accept the consequences of their mistakes fairly. Here is my advice: Do not depend on the vet to inform you of results, to demonstrate med dosing, or to recommend treatment. Obtain and read lab results yourself. Research. Ask the right questions. Get accurate answers. Cinnamon is home, but not out of the woods. I believe Surfside discharged her early due to their culpability, as she is weak needing 24/7 attn. But we're working to get her well. This incident satisfies the requirements to prove Malpractice, and I will move forward to report to the governing body of this industry. But just think... If a medical practice with a good reputation behaves this badly, what can we realistically expect from the others?? ‍ While composing a review requires an investment of time, I am doing it in the middle of the night because informing others via Yelp may very well be our only recourse. After no success and a confirmation that the next closest nearest emergency vet had an 11 hour wait, we were forced to sit and hold our dog in his last hour of pain. Long time client of Surfside Animal Hospital. Three major problems happened in the span of a year. First, a surgery for my dog that was meant to remove a tiny, benign tumor was a great success, but his post operative pain medicine gave him acute kidney injury and required several follow up appointments where he was sick and got even sicker. Again, more of a cosmetic non life threatening surgery ended up being life threatening. Second, a refill of his Trifexis medication I was billed $100 more than the year prior for the same dose and same number of tablets. I asked why and was told they would call me back with an answer. I received no call. Third, a routine checkup yielded a discharge paperwork that said my dog was losing his vision. After waiting three months to see a veterinarian eye specialist, the eye clinic found no problems at all with his eye health. read more

After our transaction I gave the vet tech my credit card and then waited another 15 minutes before I decided to go BACK in and ask what the status was of my credit card payment. Credit card was sitting on the back table with the same three ladies sitting there. I absolutely love Surfside Animal Hospital! We have been coming to this vet for years! Dr. Nicole King treats your pets as if they were her pets! Taco hates the vet, but Dr. King makes the visit that much more painless! She tells you what you need. Then lets you know what can wait and what absolutely needs to be taken care of first. Her professionalism knows no bounds. Taco was diagnosed with liver damage and when Dr. King took blood she said "it could take up to 4 days so if you don't hear, call us" But as soon as she got the results (less than 48 hours later) she called me. YES! The doctor called me! Not a Tech! (Although all the techs I have worked with have been amazing!!) I was astounded! Dr King continues to amaze me!!! Earlier this morning I came crashing in like a weeping tornado because my dog had eaten some rat poison that he found nestled among some plants outside of a coffee shop near my house. I was in a panic, not sure where to go upon arriving outside of the clinic, but Victor calmly took control and guided me inside where he was able to calm me down, assess the situation, and ensure Chili (my dog) was quickly taken in for treatment. From there the help and attention Chili and I received from every single staff member was swift, compassionate, and kind. Of course, Chili is who mattered at that moment, but I am grateful to Victor and the staff for also taking care of me as well, as I was in a bit of a frantic state. I would have paid anything to make sure my dog would be okay, but I was pleasantly surprised that the cost of services was lower than I had anticipated. I guess I don't really have a frame of reference, but to me, the fees were very reasonable. After this experience, I can rest assured knowing that this hospital is only a 15-minute drive from my house and that caring and competent staff and doctors are close by should we need emergency care again. read more

Been coming here for over 15 yrs! My adult children bring their pets here also. Until now.... Since Dr.Siebert left it has been downhill. I understand with Covid things are different But making you wait in your car with your pet over an hour just to be seen is ridiculous! Looking for a new vet.... read more

It's been a week since we brought our Lucy in for her procedure of getting, "Spayed." But why wait a week to give a review? Ok, a few reasons. First and foremost, look up the word, Procraster. Yup, wife says that I'm a master procrastinator. Well, guess I'm a "master" at something. Hahahah! Seriously tho, I waited to give an honest review (as always) and waiting a week allowed me to experience the great follow-up (3-4 calls this past week) and compassion of the staff; asking how Lucy was doing and if we had any questions/concerns about the post surgical instructions. Lucy was up and around (in 2 days) being her usual bundle of thunder and lightning. Our experience here was great! read more
