I came to see Matt for a chronic foot injury that had been significantly limiting my distance running for years. In our 6 sessions together, Matt got me back to consistently running 15-20 miles a week, and gave me the tools and understanding to continue building my mileage higher. The gait analysis session at the track was particularly helpful in allowing me to see the root cause of my injury, and it served as useful motivation for the exercises in the gym. Before starting physical therapy with Matt, I had very aggravating chronic back and shoulder joint pain from extended periods working at the computer, that was significantly impacting my quality of life. Some days even getting up from bed was a struggle from the back pain that would flare up just from lying in bed. Matt evaluated my symptoms and came up with a personalized exercise plan with exercises that don't take up a lot of time, or require a lot of room and equipment, making them easy to keep up with long term. After following this program while working with Matt for a few months, I've noticed significant improvements in my back pain and my episodes of severe pain a thing of the past! While there's still some soreness in my back and tightness in my shoulder, I'm very pleased with the progress I've made and look forward to continue working towards being pain-free. Matt has been my personal trainer for about 4 months now and I have been so happy with the results! I had a baby a year ago and it was so difficult to shed those final pounds of baby weight. I saw Matt for lower back pain. He was the 4th Physical Therapist I saw about the pain, and the only one who I felt really listened to me, who really took the time to understand what I was experiencing, and who worked with me to figure out what was going on. The other therapists I saw, all of whom are certified PTs with their Doctorate in Physical Therapy, were unable to help me. The first 2 told me that there was nothing they could do for me and that I'd have to learn to live with limited mobility. The 3rd found other issues with me, but after 6 visits ... and me religiously doing my homework exercises ... I still wasn't feeling any improvement. Matt's approach was different from the others in that he took a lot of time to listen to me, ask me questions, look at / watch me move, test my mobility, and try different things to see if anything had any impact. I noticed improvements (reduced pain, increased mobility) within a couple of weeks of working with Matt. The other thing I loved about working with Matt was his willingness to answer questions between our appointments. If I wanted to give feedback on my home exercises, or ask questions to clarify what I should / shouldn't the doing, Matt would always get back to me with the answer / information. It really helped me make progress between sessions. The facilities where Matt and I worked together (The Yard in SF and Mill Valley) were great! Very clean, organized, easy to find, and very friendly people. I also really appreciated having 2 locations to pick from 0 it made scheduling so much easier for me. I've been thrilled with my physical therapy treatment from Matt Kuik! I suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon which requires significant recovery. Prior to working with Matt, I'd had a poor experience with the typical Ortho / PT process. Long wait times, bad bedside manner, big bills, dispassionate care givers and ultimately lackluster results. I had acute shoulder pain at the time I had reached out to Matt for a diagnosis, and I wanted to determine how serious the injury was, and whether it would be okay to play beach volleyball in the upcoming season. I'm an active person, but I know that it's important to listen to your body, and my shoulder was pinching and sore. I'd let the initial pain subside, but I still did not feel 100%. Matt was able to quickly diagnose tendonitis in the rotator cuff after about 30 minutes of observations. What I enjoyed about working with Matt, is that he took the time to explain physiologically what was happening with my tendon, how the movements work between the shoulder blade and muscles, and advised me on a course of action to get me back to my goal of playing volleyball. Matt was professional throughout our 6 session engagement. Great followup, great communication, super knowledgable and authentically invested in my progress. Since seeing Matt, my tendonitis dissipated within weeks. I was back on the volleyball court without missing a game. I subsequently received care for two unrelated nagging injuries, achilles tendonitis and a tight ankle from a sprain. Matt created a bespoke routine to address all three injuries allowing me to run, skateboard and gain confidence to push my body by helping me create resiliency. I had a great experience at SFPTP - did the runners injury assessment with Matt and it was everything I had hoped for! I was training for a marathon and had pain in my posterior tib & Achilles. Matt did an assessment of basic strength and range of motion on both my legs/feet, and then analyzed my running gait. He gave great feedback on my cadence, stride, and impact that was easily applicable to my running form. He also explained the reasoning behind all of his advice which really helped a lot. It was clear that he cared a lot. Already seeing results a couple days after (just did a 12 miler that felt a lot better than usual)! When I first saw Matt at SFPTP I was in a rough spot not only physically but mentally. Having never suffered a herniated disc before I didn't know what to expect in terms of recovery. Even though I had begun the healing process I was unsure how I was progressing or if I would continue to progress. Matt was able to not only explain what was happening to my body but also what to expect as we worked together towards recovery. He was able to assure me I was progressing even when I couldn't see it and this gave me enormous peace of mind and strength to keep working hard on my recovery. I am not a person who is naturally drawn to exercise. I take good care of my health, but for some reason, regular gym attendance does not come naturally. Pre-pandemic, I had a trainer that worked well for me and was in the best shape of my life. Then came Covid and his move across the country. Even though I exercised, I got flabby, and my balance and flexibility deteriorated. Post-pandemic, I wanted to find a new trainer, but wasn't working very hard at it. Then a neighbor recommended Matt, and he and I had a conversation. I was impressed with his knowledge and skills, his perspective on health and collaborative style. Matt's expertise is deep. Lunges!) and has given me challenges that build not only my fitness, but my confidence in what I can do. Even before I saw Matt for our first session, I knew he was the right choice - he spent twenty minutes on the phone with me asking about my injury and my goals. SFPTP has helped me become the athlete I once was, full stop! Before I met Matthew, my body was banged up from years of abuse due to unhealthy habits I formed during covid. I am in my early 70s and suffered a stress heart attack just as we all went into COVID lock-down in 2020. I slowly built back my stamina via a home treadmill. I know how important it is to exercise regularly but I was not motivated to do anything other than walk on the treadmill or in nature. Then in 2023 a good friend told me about working with Matt and highly recommended him if I wanted to work out at home instead of at a gym. Matt and I discussed my goals of increasing my stamina, improving my balance, and strengthening my core. I also wanted to address some issues that I'd previously treated with physical therapy. With Matt's expertise in both PT and personal training, he has coached me through a series of exercises that address all these areas, explaining their impact on the body and what a difference it will make in activities of daily life.
