I had an absolutely strange, demeaning and wildly unprofessional experience with the General Manager, Mecque Turner. Coming from a hospitality background, I always try to give the benefit of the doubt, but I was absolutely floored with her complete lack of professionalism and frankly odd behavior. I see from a number of other reviews, that my experience is unfortunately common with her. I had purchased shoes from their San Anselmo location just over a month ago -- receiving fantastic help by the way at that location. Fast forward 37 days and I noticed extreme wear to the outsoles of my shoes and they were separating in places. I found this very odd for such a short period of usage and I called the San Anselmo shop and they recommended I go to the Mill Valley location for help, which is where the alternate universe service started. Mecque looked at the shoes, aware that they had been used for just over a month, and replied this is not a fault with the shoe, it is a problem with how I walk...something to the effect of 'you do not pick your heel up enough and walk too flat'. Wait, what? Her first response was telling me that the shoe is fine and that I do not walk correctly! My intention was to first just show the shoes to ask if they were defective or if this was just an easily wearing shoe, not to demand a refund or anything like that. Instead, I was told my walking style was defective! But wait, there is more.... I had thought they would maybe exchange the pair for a new one, or perhaps help me find a shoe that might be a more durable one. When I started to inquire about this, Mecque abruptly stated that she was providing a full refund (again, I had not asked for this) and then she stated multiple times that I would be better served going to another store, because, get this, she told me she had limited time to help customers and that I was not the type of customer that she wanted to help. I was absolutely taken completely off-guard and stunned by her statement, but was able to keep my composure and ask if she meant that their store did not cater to walkers? She reiterated that I should find another store and listed off a few stores that I should go to instead. Really super bizarre behavior. With her declaring a refund as my only option, I even asked if the shoe company would reimburse them, and she confirmed they would, as the last thing I would want is to hurt a local business. Anyway, I would like to reiterate that I was super calm and friendly throughout and asked for nothing when I arrived, only asking their opinion on if it was normal for a shoe to wear out after just 37 days. I am writing this note as a word of caution and to reinforce the myriad similar interactions others have had with this manager. It was pretty deflating to have this experience with a business that I specifically sought out to locally support with a purchase that I really could use personalized, friendly help with. Anyway, hopefully she will at some point understand just how shocking and offensive her service is, and really aim to help all customers, not just the ones that meet her specific customer profile. read more

During a recent visit to Mill Valley, my wife and I (both in our 60s and avid trail runners) made a point to stop by the San Francisco Running Company. We were staying at the Holiday Inn nearby and had heard great things about the shop. We arrived on a Saturday morning in early August, just after the group trail run had headed out. From the moment we walked in, both staff and customers greeted us warmly, asked where we were from (East Coast), and encouraged us to explore the store. We were hoping to pick up a logo shirt, but none were in stock. The woman working that morning went above and beyond--she actually printed shirts for both my wife and me on the spot, and when we tried to pay, she insisted there was no charge. On top of that, we were invited to grab some food and drinks that were set out for runners returning from the group run. No one there knew us, but everyone made us feel welcome. Fortunately, the store also carried the brand of socks we'd been looking for, so we left with those as well. What stood out most was the sense of community and generosity--folks had no reason to go out of their way for visitors from out of town, but they did, and it left a lasting impression. We're already looking forward to returning on our next trip, hopefully joining a group run and getting some expert advice on trail shoes. This is more than a running store--it's a hub for runners, and we're glad we got to experience it. read more

I would avoid the manager Mecque at all costs and honestly this location in general. I'm not one to write reviews but I witnessed the worst guest interaction I've ever seen in public. Along with 4 other shoppers, I watched Mecque bully, insult and verbally abuse a customer. Mecque also proceeded to chase the customer out to her car after leaving empty handed. I watched this all go down and eventually couldn't stop myself from intervening. The woman was sobbing and completely shocked. I shared all of this with one of the owners (Chris) who didn't seem to care the slightest bit. So to SF running co I ask, how is this community? How is this lifting people up? How is this a good example? How is this a nice welcome to someone new to Marin? Please do better. Life is hard enough. This page is littered with negative reviews regarding this staff member. I've already reached out to a handful of local runners and will continue to talk about this until things are addressed. 5 hours later and I'm still sick to my stomach. This is abuse worth reporting, if anyone was also in the store at the same time, please speak out. read more

I was in the store a few days ago when I saw something awful happen. The pink long-haired manager verbally attacked a customer for not being "confident enough" in what they wanted - saying things like "If you are not confident in what you want, get out of the store" and "You are not confident in life." The customer ended up in tears, running out of the store, and the manager chased them into the parking lot. My friends and I stepped in, and the manager just said "I hurt their feelings" - as if that somehow made it okay. The customer was so shaken they couldn't even speak for 10-15 minutes. They had been genuinely excited to get into running, and this experience completely crushed them. Totally UNACCEPTABLE behavior. Do better. We reported the incident to someone named Chris. The first thing he asked was, "How did you interpret this situation?" - a question that felt very dismissive and seriously lacking empathy and accountability. read more

This is to the manager MECQUE TUCKER who refused to sell me something I bought and paid for, then ignored my emails asking why, then screamed at me over the phone and blocked my number when I called into the store. Ive never wrote a review in my LIFE.. I don't like being negative, but when it comes to holding businesses accountable for their employees' behavior and making sure customers get treated fairly and with respect... I will take the time out of my day (or days!) to make sure that happens There was a Speedland shoe that sold out months ago that I have not been able to find anywhere on any store online in my size. And with it being a limited edition shoe, David Dombrow one of the owners at Speedland broke it to me that it is unlikely I will be able to find a pair unless a pair is returned in my size in good condition. I have my email notifications turned on to make sure I will get alerted if one comes in stock and for a few months I have had no luck. So a couple of weeks ago, I say what the heck and I google the shoe and surf around and they're still sold out on every. Single. Website. EXCEPT sf runco!! They had a 12!! I literally couldn't believe it. I call to make sure they have them in stock before I purchase and to make sure this isn't a scam (I live in Nashville, have no clue what place this is) and they do and the lady over the phone was very sweet and shared her excitement for me that I could FINALLY get this shoe I have wanted!! I order the shoe through Shopify and they charge me for it and I get an email confirming my order was placed. The next week I haven't heard anything yet and call in and she says that they emailed me the following day of my purchase, wanting to confirm my shoe size before they sent it out, as there were no refunds and the shoe ran smaller than usual. I fortunately was aware of this and replied back yes it's the right shoe size, I appreciated the thoughtfulness and was good to go. The next day I realize that on Sunday (4 days after I purchased my shoe) they actually refunded me my money and this whole time when I was calling in, patiently asking for a status update, they had cancelled my order without any reason and without notifying me about too. AND not even notifying me about it when I called into the store! THEN I look on the website and the shoe size now says SOLD OUT!! I'm like what?!? What the heck happened!? I email them asking what happened. No response. I email again. No response... I bought a shoe. I got charged for it. And then I got refunded without my consent and without ANY explanation AND ZERO justification AND No response from anyone after emailing and asking why this happened.I thought this was crazy. Finally, I get emailed; "Hey, Shopify said you have a high chargeback rate and for that reason we will not do business with you". This was complete nonsense. I had just ordered $700 worth of stuff on Shopify last week. I've gotten every order I have ever submitted through Shopify and have never had an issue with paying my credit card, have a good credit score, etc, and none of this made any sense. So I email with plenty of frustration wanting a more valid reason and explanation for why the heck this was happening. No response. I email 3 more times. No response. While I was extremely frustrated and expressed that through the emails I want to make it very very clear, that I kept things professional and refrained from using any foul language or name calling. (A very important preface to state before getting into what comes next) So I wait until Monday when apparently the manager is in, to talk to the manager over the phone about the whole situation, confident they'll empathize with what's going on. Well, after introducing myself and expressing to her my appreciation for taking time to help me resolve my issue, she cuts me off and says; "I KNOW WHO YOU ARE, I READ YOUR EMAILS YOU MYSOGONISTIC FUCKING ASSHOLE. LISTEN TO ME I AM NOT SELLING YOU THESE SHOES. I DONT HAVE TO HAVE A REASON I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT I AM THE MANAGER AND I AM NOT HONORING THIS SALE BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO. YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. THE FACT THAT ' STILL CALLING ABOUT THIS AND IT WAS LAST WEEK IS INSANE. ITS MEN LIKE YOU WHO ARE RUINING THIS WORLD AND YOURE THE REASON OUR COUNTRY IS WHERE ITS AT RIGHT NOW" and she just went on and on and on. She hung up on me after she finished her tangent on men and blocked me. I tried to just suggest to her to listen to how insane this behavior was and I am not here to yell or argue but just find a solution and she was not having it. I had no clue she was a woman and I have never been to this store I don't know anything about the workers here I was just adamant about getting the shoe that I ordered and paid for and I could NOT have anticipated in my wildest dreams this was how the phone call with the MANAGER would go. My friend called me a few hours ago with an experience she just had at San Anselmo SFRC while trying to find a summer job. I'm posting this review because of how shockingly she was treated. She walked in the store with a tank top, jeans, and flip flops on, which she admitted was definitely not the right attire and even told me "I don't even know what I was thinking wearing a tank top to try to get a job." Regardless, she walked in the store and tried to give Mecque, (the pink haired woman which so many of these other reviews negatively speak of) her resume. She said Mecque took one glance at the resume and offered her unsolicited advice that she should never wear such attire in a running store, "it's clear you're not a runner at all, get a job for 6 months at sports basement and learn how to be an active and respectful sports salesperson and then come back to us." after mentioning more than 3 times that my friend did not look or appear like a runner and that she wasn't fit for this job (she was captain of the high school xc team for 2 years in a row and ran track and xc all 4 years of high school) she said that more women definitely need to be in this industry but that my friend was clearly not prepared for such a position to advise other runners or to work at such an establishment. My friend said she knows that proper attire matters when trying to get a job, but just trying to drop off a resume on a hot day does not warrant this kind of elitist behavior towards someone who is, actually, incredibly familiar with the industry. A simple reminder to dress more modestly would have done just fine. read more

And, just down the hill, they were being carried by San Francisco Running Company. But, in all of this unexpected sequence of events, the best part--the very best part--was being helped there by Mecque, who patiently explained the differences between the seemingly infinite variety of Hoka styles and models, helping me to choose the one best suited for me. To me, the secret to making running fun is all about the shoe. The alternative is unnecessary. Luckily, the guys here get it and don't play hide the ball by bogging down your shoe shopping experience with 101 useless options. After doing some serious research, I decided to buy my shoes from here, because their selection met my needs best. I LIKE that: 1) they carry speciality running shoes that you aren't likely to find in your local sporting goods or department store. 2) they listen to what you want in your running experience, then make strong recommendations without complicating existing choices. 3) good friendly customer service. I called 6 minutes to closing, and they stayed open for me to come make may purchase; there were at least three other customers still shopping and none of us were rushed out. I'm especially appreciative of this because I needed to make the purchase before heading out of town for the weekend. 4) there is a really nice stock of good socks 5) they have a small selection of really awesome shoes on clearance. Sometimes you find a shop that just nails it on all levels. I'd say this is the top running shop I've ever been to. Recently I decided I wanted to add trail running to my list of things that get the endorphins flowing. I heard about SF Running Co and made the trip over the bridge to Mill Valley. It was a short drive from SF and they have a parking lot! These guys know what they are doing. The shop was recently closed for part of a weekend so the staff could run Western States - fast. Jorge was super helpful. He talked to me about what I like in a shoe and came out with 4 different brands in my size. I did some research online for trail shoes. It seemed that shops closer to home would have one or 2 options that I wanted to look at. This place had EVERYTHING I researched plus other options I never thought about. Bought a pair pf Brooks Pure Grit that worked perfectly for me. They even gave me some great trail suggestions and sent me off to run up the Marin Headlands. (For some reason, running miles uphill seem like a good idea lately...) I also learned that they have a very popular run that meets at the shop on Saturday mornings. Each time I come into SFRC I feel personally welcomed by either Brett, Jorge or Victor and they seem genuinely interested in how my running is going, what races I have coming up and what gear or training I might need to help me reach my goals. Victor gave me time to share what he knew from experience of the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 even though I was just stopping by for some gels and map. Brett shared some pointers on how I should be preparing for the canyons and weather of San Diego 100. Jorge hooked me up with some recovery socks and was gracious in congratulating my average time at Rocky Raccoon which made me feel very welcome in this company of phenomenal runners. These are some great guys running a great store that always seem willing to share their accumulated knowledge. I am proud to wear their logo. read more

Running is a cruel beast. I bought shoes that proved to make it even crueler. SF Running Co had a great return policy and I was able to exchange my shoes for the tried and true Brooks Cascadia (shout out to the only shoes that have endured the test of redesign for about a decade). I called and when I got there they had my new shoes behind the counter. It was a quick and easy exchange. It's in a good location (Shoreline Hwy), making the trip easy to pair with any combination of coffee, brunch, and/or trail hike/run. The store is small and clean and artfully arranged. The staff is friendly and runners themselves so know about nearby upcoming races. They also lead runs themselves in the area. They actually tipped us off to what become one of our favorite runs early on in our move to Marin (Tennessee Valley Beach trail, a short and sweet ~3 mile out and back with a spectacular ocean view from the beach at the halfway point). My boyfriend says it's very important for me to share that they have a great selection of hats. I bought him a sweet one with a San Francisco Running Company Mt. Tam Summit Runners. We later met the designer at our dog park, so the patch is locally designed and made. read more

As you can see, SFRC is actually somewhat of a misnomer -- the store is just up the Golden Gate in Mill Valley. Still, it's just what you'd expect from a local running store. Friendly people, and most of the gear that you're looking for. I was surprised to see a lack of Nike and Adidas products, but I get that not all stores go that way. Some of their gear was on the pricy side, but not unexpected when it's brands like Sugoi, Salomon, and the like. Having been to places like Portland, Seattle, and LA where local running stores are plentiful, it seems weird that SF has only Fleet Feet within the city, and SFRC just outside. read more

I've driven over the bridge to this store maybe six times now, and each time the four or five guys who work there have been extremely friendly and patient as I tried on shoes and vests and glasses and more shoes. They seem very community focused, very knowledgeable, and from what I can gather they're all trail runners themselves who've completed some of those massive 100-mile races. Their advice on products is hard won and personal, rather than a standard sales pitch. The store seems to be for runners, staffed by runners, with a caring and sharing atmosphere. Today one of the staff spent 15 minutes giving me advice on which trail to run during an upcoming trip to LA, and seemed happy to do so. All in all they're nice people, with great stuff, in a sweet little area. Plenty of trails nearby, a good coffee shop over the road, and a nice little diner out back. I'm glad they're around. Update: Whoa! I just read some of the other reviews for this store. I didn't realize that one of the guys who so quietly and kindly helped me was the owner and that he was Brett Rivers (or that the other owner is Jorge Maravilla). What a lovely man. I think that's just super that such talented people are happy to spend their time helping others and do it in such a quiet and humble manner. What a great place it is. read more

SF RUNNING COMPANY IN SAN ANSELMO POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! We purchased a running jacket, running shirt, large massage ball and a small roller for our sons for Christmas. We asked the return policy for Christmas and they replied no issues with receipt. We kept everything except the roller and returned to the SAN ANSELMO store with tags, receipt and untouched roller. He was so confused trying to help someone before us and asked if we could come back another day! We returned later in the afternoon and still could not properly return our item. He said he couldn't find it on the square! I had the receipt and the roller and it's perfect tags! He said maybe he could issue a gift card.. we don't want to return! I've never been to a running store where the people weren't friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. This one is no exception and they just seem to take it to the next level. Between my wife and I, we've purchased 4 pair of shoes here in the last 2 months. We're always greeted with a smile by the staff. Their love of running shows in their knowledge and expertise. Today during my visit, I felt like my salesman was putting as much effort into helping me get into the right shoe as he would if he were picking out his own shoe. We found the store after reading an article about the Hoka's brand shoes, they're the local distributor. I bought a pair today, I don't want to take them off! We're fans of the Newtons as well, my wife a little more than me, but I still like them (I use them for exercise other than running, I love the cushion in the mid-foot for doing jumping exercises). I am getting back into running and need a good pair of running shoes. I ran when I was much younger and remember I was told to seek out specific shoes because of how my foot landed. I can't remember what it was pronation? neutral? supination? but my gait was analyzed in-store and I purchased shoes to give me the correct support. Since I am a big believer in supporting small, local businesses, I make it a point to support them. I came to SF Running Co. to support this business and also get the best possible shoes for my training. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. The young man who helped me told me that most people are neutral so it wasn't necessary to look at my gait and seemed dismissive on the subject. When I tried on a pair of Nike, which were a size 9 (I normally wear an 8 in this brand) he told me that the fit was correct, even though I felt that they fit too big. Because I was seeking expert advice, I went along with it. I ran in these shoes a couple of times, which were far too big for my feet and my feet were sliding around in the shoes and caused rubbing sore spots on my feet. I couldn't return them because of their return policy. I was able to sell my shoes second-hand online, but lost about $90 in this process. A waste of time and money. This was definitely not the expert advice I was hoping for. read more

Also, they carry some innovative brands and equipment like Victory SportDesign Drop bags in stock which is a real treat. This is easily one of the most legit running shops in america. read more

All I have to say is, these folks are absolutely fantastic! I walked in a bit intimidated as I'm not a hardcore runner and have often found shoe stores to have folks who can be pushy. However, that was not the case at all at this store and for that, I am very grateful. In fact, this was the best experience I've had when purchasing a pair of athletic shoes. The gentleman who helped me quickly evaluated my needs and selected some great shoes for me to try on, and even better, he was able to find me a shoe within my budget. By far the best specialty running shop in the Bay Area, hands down. It's not even close. They treat everyone like an Olympian here, from the new runner getting ready for their first 5k all the way up to the serious marathoners & road runners, long trail & ultra folks, etc. They cater to everyone and anyone and smile doing it. You'll find all the brands that serious athletes use (Hoka One One, Altra, Brooks, Salomon, Ultimate Direction, etc.) with none of that department store vibe- all the folks working there are runners that want to help you be a better runner. read more
