I didn't have high hopes for the martini - I find that outside of major U.S. cities places end up putting in way too much vermouth - and it actually ended up being fantastic. It didn't taste too different from what I would make at home which is probably the best thing I could say about a martini (for my own personal taste). I tried a fruitier one - the Gigi - as my second and final drink. It was good but I'm just not a fruity drink person. I just wasn't equipped to handle another standard martini lol. The ambiance is phenomenal - it was both casual and comfortable yet classy. The crowd was much older than I expected although not in a bad way at all. There were lots of expats in their 50s and 60s. I was worried it would be a rowdy rooftop and by contrast it was actually a very chill vibe. Only complaint is that the bathroom is outside of the venue down the stairs and you need a key to enter, which was a bit annoying bc I wanted to use the restroom before I left and I forgot to ask for the key on my way out. Small annoyance and certainly wouldn't prevent me from going back.

After looking up good places to go, Bar La Playa came up- and I'm sure glad it did! First, it's easy to get to if you're coming from North. Our Uber was easily able to drop us off without getting stuck in gridlock traffic that can affect certain roads of this area. Additionally, the location isn't a high-traffic area for tourists. That meant we were able to walk up and immediately find seats. Second, the service was top notch. I didn't get the bartenders name, but he was very welcoming, friendly, hospitable and spoke English. Just an overall cool dude and was glad to support his business. Third, the drinks were great. Finally, we were drinking 'real' drinks, not the watered down sugary stuff at the hotel. We were very satisfied with the taste of the drinks. Fourth, the prices are really good. Mexico has gotten expensive and this was a sigh of relief. You can have a great time here without feeling like you paid an arm and a leg. I highly-highly recommend making Bar La Playa your first stop when coming to this area. But dining at Vidanta Nuevo Nayarit comes with a practical reality worth knowing: not every restaurant in the complex is open every night, so your choices on any given evening are determined by the schedule rather than purely by preference. On this particular night, The Burger Custom Made was where we landed. I am glad we did, even if it took me a moment to get there mentally. The appetizers set an unexpectedly high bar. The coconut breaded shrimp served with mango habanero chutney and a bacon dill dip were genuinely outstanding, fresh and creative with a combination of flavors that worked far better than it had any right to. The jalapeño poppers arrived breaded and stuffed with cream cheese, served alongside smoked BBQ sauce and a tomato-mango pico de gallo. Both starters were confident, well executed, and the kind of thing you order again before the first round is finished. The burgers delivered on their ambition. The smoked brisket burger combined a beef patty with actual brisket, cheddar cheese, onion rings, red wine BBQ sauce, and chipotle mayonnaise into something bold, enormous, and genuinely creative. The hamburger special with swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, and bacon on a brioche bun was the more straightforward option and executed cleanly.
