The ingredients were fresh, the flavors really stood out, and there were plenty of veggie options to choose from. I tried the breakfast tacos, and not only were they delicious, but also very reasonably priced. There were so many different options on the menu, which made it fun to pick and made me want to come back to try more. Parking was easy, such a nice bonus in Austin, and I noticed they serve alcohol too, though I didn't try it this time. I have been going to San Juanita since I have been 6 or 7 years old over at very first location! The service and food has always stayed true to quality Even fast forwarding to 2025! I highly recommend getting the breakfast which is my favorite, the beef fajita all the way comes with beans, cooked onions and cooked jalapenos and I also get potato, bacon, bean and cheese (weird combination but don't knock till you try it) they always make the tacos fresh and it is never too long of a wait! I love little hole-in-the-wall Mexican places and that's exactly what San Juanita is. The ladies that work there are very friendly and make sure you're taken care of through your entire meal. I stopped in for an early weekday breakfast after a friend recommended them. I got the Huevos Divorciados so I could try the salsa ranchera (which my friend recommended). It was really good. I loved both the red and green sauce and loved the cook and seasoning on the ham and potatoes. Everything came out quickly too. I think I was in and out in less than an hour. Stopped in here while passing by and it was really solid and was quick service. Being a long standing Austin restaurant, I had high hopes, and I tried a chorizo egg and jalapeño taco and a beef fajita taco. They were both really good, I would rate the beef fajita taco a 8.4/10 and the chorizo breakfast taco 7.9/10. The food for breakfast here is really good. The potatoes are amazing. I love that they're not just pieces of potato fried. They actually put seasoning and it's really good.. The service is always friendly and fast and this place is always clean. The ambience is comfortable and fun. They really play great music a mixture of everything. I love the 80s and 90s and Mexican music just when you need it. The soft opening is today and so far it seems so fun. I haven't tried the lunch special yet, but I'm gonna try the dinner the enchiladas and the stuffed avocado and the trio plate looks so great. I can't wait to dig in. read more

I was excited to somewhat recently find San Juanita Tacos a few weeks back. I have been going about once a week if not more since I stumbled across it, but I don't think I will be going back anymore. First, the good, they make their own flour tortillas in house. I have found that most taquerias in Austin, if they make their own tortillas, they usually make corn tortillas, so it was nice to find a place that make their own flour tortillas, even if they aren't the fluffy giant kind I grew up with in south Texas. Now for the bad. They have raised their prices with no warning. a two item breakfast taco is now $3.29 instead of $2.79 and it looks like that are charging another $0.60 to add cheese, so a sausage, egg and cheese taco costs almost $4.00. I don't like being nickel and dimed, and to add insult to injury, they have a big sign on the door asking everyone to pay cash so that the business can keep all of the money. So the business doesn't like being nickel and dimed, but they have no problem nickel and diming their customers. So, it was nice while it lasted, but I most likely will not be coming back very often if at all. There are so many places around to go get a taco, and I particularly love La China ATX (in fact that is where I wanted to go today, but I think they closed due to the weather) that are at least equally as good, but charge a more reasonable price for a 2 item taco and don't make their hypocrisy so obvious. read more

This little joint is located in a strip plaza off of South Congress. Their menu includes breakfast and lunch options. They do serve beer and margaritas (we were there for breakfast, so we stuck with coffee). We ordered the Juevos a la Mexicana and the Migas Especiales with chorizo. Both were fantastic. They were served with tortillas and salsa. Everyone who worked there was friendly and accommodating. It was a very inexpensive and satiating meal. All the food here is so yummy!!! I'm a fan of the vegetarian plate and the al pastor tacos (I know, I'm complicated). Ask for a little verde salsa for your chips because it's awesome. The waitstaff is friendly but can be a little frantic when it gets busy. I love that I can walk here from my house and that it is near the park. (I've taken stuff to go and ate in the park, on a swing, like a child. Try it.) The salsa is some of the best in town and the iced tea I would like to inject directly into my veins. I personally went to pick up the tacos order and I can attest to the other reviews about their rudeness. Specifically the short rounder lady with short hair and wearing red. I walk in ( not greeted) . I stand at the counter and ignored for a few months. I tell her that my coworker called in an order. She tells me it's not ready yet. I stand there because I would assume she would want to take payment. I asked " okay, do I pay" instead of being polite about it, she bluntly states " I'll call you when it's ready" . I tried to say again that I can pay . She says " I'll call you when it's ready" ... okay. I'll sit down and wait. I kid you NOT, I sit down and 45 seconds later she rings it up and tells me the total... after I just stood there trying to pay, she lets me sits down and immediately after tells me to pay???? Like granted it's just a few steps, why couldn't you do that 1 min ago?? Not a single smile on this lady's face, como una bruja! I sign the receipt and not tip. She looks at it and throws it in the trash and literally gives me dirty looks all the way until I'm in my car. No way am I going there. You'd expect a down-to-earth establishment like this place to serve authentic cuisine at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the average-priced food is simply underwhelming, and the service is highly suspicious (bordering on racial profiling.) Food: The breakfast tacos were wholly unremarkable: tiny-but-decent-enough tortillas, exceedingly bland fillings at anemic portion sizes (we ordered egg/bean, egg/ham/cheese, and egg/ham), and just one completely flavorless salsa available. Service: Our server brought us a check that included items we didn't order. The total was $5 more than our actual bill, but fortunately we reviewed the list and caught the error before paying. When confronted, the staff said it was an accident and gave us a corrected bill. I found this to be highly suspicious because my table was one of only three tables at the time of service, and were the only group which did not appear to be Hispanic. I ordered the shrimp tacos and they were tasteless. The tortillas weren't heated up so they fell apart and has no crisp what so ever. The rice was ice cold. I also used the bathroom which was filthy! They say a bathroom resembles a places kitchen and that really terrifies me especially with this corona virus. The toilet didn't even flush, and it has brown stuff all over it kinda like rust? A friend recommended the breakfast tacos here, so I stopped by the nondescript location in a gas station strip mall parking lot and was blown away. SUCH flavorful bites in warm, amazing breakfast tacos. Poblano peppers, potatoes, eggs, chorizo...simmered in sauce and love. The servers were very friendly and helpful and the food came out fast. Wow, I was very impressed with this place. When we decided to go out to breakfast with my daughter and her friend I couldn't figure out why she wanted to go someplace so far away when there are so many places closer. After we got our food I could certainly see why. It was absolutely delicious, reasonable prices, good portion, great service. It was really hard for me to not get Migas because that's my favorite breakfast whenever I come to Austin for a visit but I saw that they had Nopalitos on the menu so I couldn't resist and I wasn't sorry. It's pretty hard to make beans distinctively good but somehow this place does it. I just kept eating those beans until they were all gone. In fact I don't think I had any leftovers at all but my daughter gave me hers since she figured she was going to be too busy wrapping up the school year to have time for leftovers. Delicious. I got a barbacoa taco and the meat was so tasty, a lot for a little taco, and not greasy at all. Same with the spinach and egg taco - they used fresh, not frozen, spinach - a nice touch. Variety. There were a lot of different dishes available. I found this to be a pleasant surprise especially for a smaller place. Chips. We drive by this place all the time - it's on the southeast corner of Stassney and Congress. The exterior yellow paint looks like it used to be sunshine bright, but has now faded with time. It appears to be a tiny shack, a step up from a taco stand. We'd always say, "One day we'll go to San Juanita - before it gets replaced by an Office Depot." And so we did. Upon walking in, we knew we were somewhere special. It was a bit larger on the inside than appeared from the outside. The floors were concrete, the tables were covered in colorful oilcloths, and the TV was blasting terrible Saturday morning Mexican game shows - you know, with scantily-clad women doused in foamy soap. Although most of the customers appeared to be Mexican families from the neighborhood, there was still a diverse clientele. The menu explained that San Juanita has always been family owned and that the daughters who work there will get to know your name and what you like to order. It's true - Paloma took our order, and she made us feel as if we were welcomed guests in her home. The menu was none too exciting - standard tacos, enchiladas, and gorditas (they do serve menudo on Saturdays). To try one of the more exotic things on the menu, I had the carne guisada - the rice was cooked to perfection, the refried beans were flavorful, but the meat was a bit tough. I'll go back there, not so much for the food, but for the genuine, family-owned atmosphere. And the game shows on the TV. (Just kidding.) p.s. they do take MC and Visa. read more

Out of curiosity, I braved San Juanita (the post-apocalyptic, Spahn Ranch-esque shanty of a place on S. Congress/Stassney), thinking there must be a hidden gem in there. No place this scary looking could stay open unless there is something special going on. Well, there isn't, unless it's something I don't know about. Human trafficking? Meth lab? I watch too much Breaking Bad. Anyway, the whole place smells like burned fish--and everything tastes like it, too. Nothing seemed clean. My salsa bowl had crust on it. The salsa was from a can. My glass had a lip imprint on the rim. I half expected a goat to come wandering through the dining room. I played it safe and got crispy tacos, and if they hadn't already absorbed the burned fish bouquet, I would still say they were the worst I have ever had. This is what Tex Mex tastes like in hell. This place is great. It's very simple, straightforward Mexican. My husband and I ordered the migas, queso, and lemonade. The migas were really good. Very authentic migas, i.e. not drowning in sauce and queso. The queso was the yellow kind. Very tasty, but super liquidy. The lemonade was awesome. The service is attentive without being intrusive. After just few visits the team knew us and our drink orders. They get really busy on the weekend so we try to get there by 9am.
