Loved this place. For what it lacks in fanciness / trendiness: it makes up for it with soul, sweet smiles, and reasonable prices. You can tell a lot about a place by the quality of their beans and these were delicious. The chips were hot, light, and fresh. I love the fact that this place is in what clearly was a chinese place that hasn't been remodeled in decades. Our server was so sweet and attentive. Salsa was delish. One thing worthy of noting for feedback is the potato and egg taco was STUFFED and amazing, but the bacon and egg was kinda scrawny in comparison. My sister and I have been looking all over Austin for authentic chiles rellenos like we used to eat when we lived in Mexico, and we finally found them. El Borrego de Oro served us great chiles, complete with good rice and refried beans. We also liked the warm chips we were initially brought. They lost a star for not serving warm salsa with the warm chips and for overheating the corn tortillas that came with the meal. I came on a Saturday morning with my family hoping to have a nice breakfast. we ordered menudo which were unaware they were charging extra for the feet & we were not told it would be extra neither was it on the menu. We were waiting to get serviced & noticed our waitress sitting at a table with other customers having a conversation & distracted on her phone while we're trying to get her attention to order. when we finally got our food it was just okay. Then we received the bill which totaled to 100 dollars on just 2 plates of menudo & a plate of chilaquiles. it caught us very off guard because we were expecting to pay around 50-60 dollars. So we bring our ticket up to the front to let them know if there's a mistake, then the manger/owner approached us very rudely and unprofessionally , she obviously does not know how to handle customer service & started arguing with us after she said "she would not argue over this" she was very aggressive towards us and it was not a pleasant experience at all. She was questioning me and my mother if we knew how about how to run a business when we grew up owing businesses as well, we would NEVER treat our customers this way. it was the most unprofessional thing i've ever seen. 0/10 , do not recommend the food or service here , it was my first & last time coming. read more

Stopped in during a visit to Austin. Tried it based on the reviews, and after walking out spending $70 on one combination, a large queso, two sodas, two beers and a shot of tequila. The sad thing was that the flavor of the food was so bland. Even the queso. The service was subpar. The server was texting on her phone while we were still waiting on silverware. I won't visit again. Didn't take any pics because we were very hungry and ready to eat. Out of the six of us in my party, two enjoyed their plates. I ordered the chicken flautas with black beans, it was average and I was okay with it. The chicken and beans were salty, but the rice was good. It came with a generous amt of sour cream, lettuce, and guacamole. Someone else ordered the chicken enchiladas with suiza sauce, they didn't finish half the plate because the chicken was overly salty. The Birria plate was not what we expected, maybe it's a different style based on the owner's area but we were not fans. The steak quesadilla was pretty amazing, I got a piece from my neighbor's plate and it was honestly so good. Perfectly crisp and a generous portion. Two people in our party ordered the beef burritos, one ground beef and one beef fajita. They both weren't my taste, but my friend liked the beef fajita one a lot. I guess this can get mixed reviews, but if you ask me I wouldn't be set on coming back. As for the service, it was great. The servers were polite and attentive. When we come to El Borrego de Oro, we usually come for breakfast. I brought my sister and parents here since my parents were in town and prefer a Mexican breakfast. I ordered the green chilaquiles with two over easy eggs, sour cream, and a side of beans. They were so delicious and filling. This is my go-to when I come here. My sister ordered the barbacoa taco and opted for the corn tortilla. The taco was packed in a good way! The corn tortillas are home made - legit! They also have a delicious salsa verde and she added some to her taco. The salsa verde is addicting! My mom ordered the papas a la Mexicana taco and really liked it. She's very picky so the fact that she liked it, says a lot about this place. She opted for a flour tortilla, but those were not home made. I ordered one taco as well as fajita quesadilla which were both very delicious. salsa was hot but not too hot just the right amount. most entrees ranged from about 15-23 bucks if i remember correctly which is completely fair for the quality and quantity. the ambiance of this place was reminiscent of some of my favorite childhood spots back in houston and for that alone id give a 6th star if i had the chance to. will be coming back soon read more

Good solid TexMex. Not worth making a special trip to south Austin, but if you are in the area you won't be disappointed. Charro beans are excellent. Salsa varies in heat from visit to visit. I like mine very spicy, so sometimes it is disappointing for me. Service here is generally pretty good. I have only been at lunch so I can't speak for evenings. The very friendly man at lunch that fills your drink is a real ambassador for the restaurant. I would pass on the ceviche next time - was dry and felt like mushed cooked fish instead of chunks like most other ceviche ive had. But the other two were really tasty. I stopped by here for years now and again. It is Tex Mex and it knows it. As the years went by and the condos and bee hives started springing up, it began to change from hot to mild. The change was to be expected as they had to change with the changing clientele. I highly recommend the Menudo, especially with a foot, but be prepared as it will not be extremely spicy as it was long ago and the same with the other offerings. However, the flavor is right there. The home made tortillas are quite good! Experiment with the salsas or hot sauces. They sometimes have a hidden gem of salsa they have made up and if you ask, you may have a real treat. This is a small place, looks a little run-down, but it is really nice when people come out of the kitchen to see how you enjoyed what they cooked. To enter, you must be going south on Congress due to the traffic at the location. Upon leaving, you might be there awhile unless someone lets you in. The memories of old Congress dwell here and what is nice is that adjustments the restaurant have made have made it popular with the younger up-and-coming. This place is awesome, I almost didn't want to write a review so I could keep it to myself And they are open during quarantine (revised hours, so the now close at 9PM) To start, we had chips (hot like from any good Mexican restaurant) and salsa - I thought the salsa was also great! I would recommend not stuffing yourself because you will want to save room for the food later. The queso flamido was AMAZING. It was a perfect balance between normal Texas queso and queso fundido which I find to be hard and difficult to eat. This queso was a perfect balance of meat with delicious mushrooms and stringy cheese. I also really appreciated the simplicity of the queso, but also the addition of mushrooms, which I don't typically find in queso, but they were great! It came with four warm tortillas and was all around delicious. Drinks- the restaurant only serves rocks margaritas and Mexican martinis, which was disappointed because I wanted a frozen. I got a house marg, but I wouldn't order again. I wasn't too disappointed because when I return it will be for the queso and other food- I may try the Mexican martini though! read more

I've been coming here for almost 9 years. First as a visitor and now as a resident. Back then I had the best mole enchiladas of my life and still tell everyone I know the same to this day. The homemade salsa is spicy and plentiful, just how I like it. They have it in gallon containers so clearly it's popular, lol! The portions are big and prices very fair, especially as the current arms race in ATX to offer new, more expensive things heats up. It's refreshing to see a family business continue to thrive while not feeling the need to gouge customers based on what's happening around them. This used to be (what we thought) our secret, hiding in plain sight (there were only 8 Yelp reviews when I started coming), but it's obvious the word is getting out haha. Cheap beers, fantastic food, great service... what more could you want when you need that fix? Been in Austin for 30yrs and never been and now i know why... nobody has ever recommended them to me. Breakfast was OK. Menudo was just ok. Lacked a bit of flavor. The waiter was great, but we didn't get any chips like the other (white) customers. It was when we were paying and questioned the time we ordered that the cashier got rude and took her time in giving us a pen by serving the to go customers as we were standing there.
