Went here for cinco de mayo this year to support this small local business. They seemed to be really busy but the restaurant was really small Inside and didn't really seem clean. We ordered our waters and were given dirty silverware and plates for chips and salsa. The salsa was good but the chicken nachos they were had with shredded chicken was highly disappointing. The ambiance is very low key, there isn't much memorable about this place, they have empty wine and other glass bottles that is an interesting choice in design. Service wise, the waiter was nice but when she went to go retrieve our waters, her coworker spilled a whole plate of drinks for the table two booths behind us and everyone being seated so close together reacted and went dead silent which made our dinner table feel awkward. We asked if the lady needed help cleaning up the glass but it was majority of what we could focus on so we finished our food fast so we could leave. San Luis I has been a pandemic saving grace. I can't even count how many times we have ordered take-out to satisfy our love for Mexican food. Their chips and salsa is always delicious. They even provide 3 salsa options of regular, hot, and salsa verde. I like spicy but dang the hot is hot. I can't hang, to me its just hot and kind of blows out your palate so I stick with the regular and salsa verde. The Tacos Ensenada style has been my go-to order as of late. They are really good tacos (three tacos served on soft flour tortillas, topped with lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole) served with rice and beans. I have gotten these tacos with fried fish, grilled fish, and shrimp. I get the sour cream on the side and add as I please, as they put too much on tacos in my opinion. The tacos are made with flour tortillas by default, I typically prefer corn, but as these tacos are so big and filled with yummy ingredients the flour is honestly needed to hold it all. Another stellar dish is the Especial de la Cocina (chicken, steak, and shrimp grilled with bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms, then topped with cheese dip). It is served with rice, beans, guacamole salad, and tortillas. My pictures are the lunch portion which is still a very filling amount. Go for the corn tortillas as they are made in house. San Luis does not hold back on the cheese sauce which I salute them for because who doesn't love more cheese sauce? Thank you, San Luis, for being my favorite Mexican restaurant and a consistent happy during these unprecedented times. San Luis has been my main Mexican place for almost than 10 years. They provide some of the best priced and tasting Mexican food in the area. You can probably find cheaper but I'm sure the quality of lower. Usually get the some sort of fajitas, or one of their specials of the day, which is usually a price reduction on other great menu item. Pictured is the chicken fajitas from dinner. Always tasty and come our super hot on a sizzling plate. i usually pair with corn tortillas and a pacifico Clara cerveza. I remember going to UNCG in the '70s for my MFA and being horrified at the lack of ethnic food in our area. Growing up in NY, I was used to every cuisine at my fingertips. But when I asked my landlady in 1974 where I could get some fresh bagels, she sent me to Friendly Center to the grocery store for frozen Lenders bagel and when I told her I like lox, she said in her charming Southern accent, "Sugah, head to Fleet Plummer Hardware and they have all the locks y'all could possibly want?" Even the pizza store on Tate Street did not know how to cut a slice but rather served it to you cut into 50 little squares. As my beloved Grandma would say, "Oi vay!" Well Greensboro has come a long, long way! As our community becomes more and more diverse, so do the restaurants and their offerings One of my all-time favorite spots is San Luis for Mexican food. Like they say, "Go where the locals go!", and I always see a large crowd of Latinos eating inside San Luis which is always a good sign! I have been going here for years with my kids when it's time for Mexican and it never disappoints. My son-in-law chose San Luis for his 40th birthday meal and he is a Mexican food expert, so there!! I guess the place could use a little sprucing up, but in a way it's part of the charm. The staff is always friendly and welcoming and you can barely sit down without being asked what you would like to drink and a huge bowl of warm tortilla chips and salsa are brought to your table. The portions are plentiful, and there is always a second meal to take home in a doggie bag. I am a creature of habit, and although I have occasionally veered off track to try some of their other dishes, I seem to always come back to their fajitas. Sizzling hot, delicious, plentiful, and with all the trimmings. I recently tried to break out of my box and tried their brochettas which are also scrumptious and quite healthy. Let's face it, Mexican dishes have basically the same 10 ingredients but it's amazing to see how many variations the menu can come up with using those same items in a different format and presentation. What sets San Luis apart is that it is done so well with a homemade feel, great taste and hearty servings and the staff is delightful and there to make your experience a positive one. Although the San Luis further west is more modern, I tend to gravitate towards the one near UNCG for its homie feel and convenience. Like I said, when it comes to good food I am creature of habit. The food is pretty good. It's nothing too amazing, it's comparable to most Mexican restaurants. The location has very reasonable prices and I've never had an issue with the food quality. This is an ok Mexican restaurant. I had the Chile Rellanos which were pretty good. The poblano peppers were smothered in cheese which was great but the peppers were not easy to find they were smothered so much. We also had the chicken quesadilla which was just ok - the chicken was a bit dry. Our friends had the Fajitas Texanos which were huge! Definitely a shareable option. They were excellent. This was my first time here and based on the Fajitas, there are some very good dishes here. The space is fairly small with booths crammed everywhere possible. This place is still very much open for business - there is another location (San Luis II) farther our High Point Road - but it didn't take the place of this one. This is a small restaurant (was originally a fast food restaurant way back in the day), and it gets noisy when it gets crowded. The service is friendly, and attentive, with an unfocused moment or two thrown in. The chips are excellent, fresh and full of flavor. The salsa is pureed, with a nice amount of cilantro and onion, but it is really mild. There is a commercial hot sauce on the table, and that will jazz it up some. The Lunch Carnitas ($7.99) is excellent, and the portion size is large - the chunks of pork are well cooked, resulting in the crusty exterior & moist, tender interior that is the essence of this dish. Here it is served with an ample amount of lightly sauteed onion, beans, rice, pico de gallo, and well made, flavorful. guacamole. You have your choice of tortilla, and I chose flour this time because I'd not tried them before - but I much prefer the fresh corn tortillas they make in house. The Beef Taco is typical, but is very tasty. The Chili Relleno is smaller than many you'll encounter, with only a small piece of pepper, smothered in well seasoned beef and cheese - very much like the one served at La Bamba. The flavor is excellent, but I really like the full poblano. The rice and beans are also rather typically, good but nothing out of the ordinary. The size of the portions on the lunch specials are also large. Didn't get the Fish Tacos this time, but I still believe they are one of the best dishes on their menu, along with most other seafood choices. I like most things here, and it is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, not at the very top, but a very solid place. read more

I love their food. I have been ordering takeout for several years from this location. I have never been disappointed by their food. I ordered the chimichanga and my so ordered a quesadilla today. We were both very happy with the taste and quality of food. I will say the restaurant is very dated and in need of updates. We've been here several times once we got the recommendation from a local chef. Being from the southwest (New Mexico) it has been a challenge to find even halfway decent Mexican food in Greensboro. Although I still prefer my old stomping grounds, San Luis is our go to place for Mexican/Tex-Mex. Also, they consistently have $10 off gift certificates on $20 of purchases on Restaurant.com --BONUS! Location/Atmosphere: Located on West Lee near UNCG might be a bit off-putting for some but we've never had any issues regardless of the time of day we went. The restaurant is not very large with somewhere around 18-20 table probably. Every time we have been it has been busy but we've never had to wait. The decor is nice but low-key and you have the option of watching Mexican television if you like ;-) Food: This is obviously the reason we come here... The menu is surprisingly varied. As mentioned in the earlier review, you can get your typical Mexican staples but you should really think about trying some of the more unique options. I love the fish tacos, for example. And for 3 tacos, they always fill me up. Their fresh guacamole with the green chile sauce is excellent too and we get it every time. The caldos (big, hearty soups) are keepers too. There are food as well as beer and drink specials everyday and some of them are very good deals. One correction on the homemade corn tortillas...while they are truly AWESOME, they are only available Fri - Sun. Value: Prices are very reasonable and you can find items from $6 to $18. I could eat the guac and chips by itself for a meal for $3. Whoop! If you get one of the Restaurant.com GC's it can be a challenge to spend enough. Service: has always been good, pleasant and fast. Again, I've never felt "out of place" here. Next time you want Mexican but want something more authentic or just bored with the same ole, same ole, give these guys a try. San Luis "Uno" is the original, and better, version of the small local chain of Mexican restaurants. Unlike the location farther up Gate City Blvd, this location is remarkably consistent in quality of the dishes coming out of the kitchen, the level of service, and the great value. The restaurant is small, but they make efficient use of the space, and have the ability to service large groups. There is a nice mix of authentic dishes here alongside the "Gringo'd" fare that you'll find in most spots around town. To that end, it really works for me, as sometimes I want something different and authentic, other times I just want some grilled meat covered in queso RIGHT. STAT. NOW. Another thing about this place, and for some reason most of the Mexican restaurants in Greensboro, they have some of the best sweet tea around. They hit that magic balance of deep brewed tea flavor without the seizure inducing sweetness. I like it. Overall, if you are going out for Mexican, you'll not be disappointed in this place. This was my first visit to here, and I was excited to finally get the chance. I really like the interior and the vibe, and it was far larger than I had thought. I went with friends of mine who are repeat customers. The chips were hot, and fresh from the fryer, which I liked and appreciated! They have a salsa bar area, where you can help yourself to various condiments and differing types of salsa/pico for your meals and chips. Very nice selection. Everything was fresh, spicy, and yummy there. The prices are great, and I was very happy with the portion size. Our food came out quick and hot, but my chimichanga tortilla was raw/undercooked on the inside, something I didn't realize until I had actually eaten to the center, lol. The shredded beef I asked for was tasty, but served inside the chimi with red enchilada sauce, which I found to be a bit off putting. I would have just liked the meat, and let me add any sauces to it etc. The refried beans were delicious, and the rice quite good. The service was horrendous though, and we were but one of maybe 3 tables. It took forever to get our orders, any recognition, and our beverages. We actually had to get up to go to the register to pay, we never got our check, and we were clearly done. we waited for a long time for our check, and finally had to get up and address it ourselves. The young man assisting us off and on was not very friendly, and obviously pained, as the waitress was not present or avoiding customers. Not sure what that dynamic was about. Overall, I was happy with the meal, and will definitely will go back. I may however just order takeout though, and I will definitely check the doneness of my chimi /burrito. This was our second visit to this place that we really liked on our visit about a year earlier. After all we can't eat barbecue every meal. We knew San Luis was good enough for a re-visit. Ms T had tacos de camarones and they were excellent. The shrimp were lightly coated and fried. They were flavorful and plentiful. I had camarones a la diablas. These were also excellent and I will order them again if I am back and have the opportunity. The sauce was not excessively spicy, but was rich and well balanced. The order was large. The shrimp come in the shell and seems a bit annoying because you can't just shovel them in, but take your time and suck all of the delicious flavor out of the shells before you discard them. We have eaten at uncountable little family Mexican places. They tend to be pretty cookie cutter, predictable and many are mediocre. San Luis stands out of the crowd (in a good way) and since they specialize in mariscos, I recommend you take advantage of that part of the menu. The people are great and the service could not be better. The place is small, usually busy and you don't feel like you are in a big burrito place. read more

Another great visit to San Luis tonight. This is a good place to go with group of people because it has a very large menu that includes Tex Mex staples like burritos, nachos and fajitas, but also has many authentic dishes for the more adventurous. There are beer, wine and margarita specials every day of the week. It can get a bit crowded during typical lunch/dinner hours, but service is usually fairly quick, polite and glasses rarely get empty. I had chile verde tonight and it was an enormous plate of food. Guacamole salad, beans, rice, pico de gallo and tortillas came alongside a good sized portion of tender chunks of pork smothered in green sauce with grilled white onions. I barely got through half of the plate before calling for a box. My Mom had the grilled shrimp salad which was enormous as well. Plenty of nicely charred medium shrimps came on a bed of lettuce, tomato, cucumber, carrot strips, avocado and radish. She also gave up about halfway thru and asked for a box. I also really like their Ensenada Baja style tacos. They come with fish or shrimp, lettuce, sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole on four tortillas. The fish has that unique batter from the Baja region, while the shrimp are lightly dusted in flour and then fried. Both are served with rice and beans. The table salsa has a little more spice to it than most places, but if you really like heat as I do ask for the salsa picante. They bring out a plate of a very hot red salsa and tangy hot salsa verde and both are excellent. read more

Stopped by and picked up lunch to-go, I had the "Pollo Popeye" which is chicken breast with mushrooms, onions and spinach topped with cheese served with rice, beans, a little salad with guacamole and tortillas. My order was ready fairly quick, the rice and beans were avreage rice and beans, the chicken was nice and tender, along with the mushrooms, onions, spinach and cheese it was very good...I was hopin' my forearms and biceps would suddenly double in size after a bite or two of the Pollo Popeye, but I guess there wasn't enough spinach in the dish to trigger the Popeye effect. read more

I am so upset with this place ! I sent my son to pick up my order. They had so many extra charges on my bill, gave a little food for too much money , filled the other plate with onions and peppers. When I called she could not explain the charges or anything . She said the manager was going to say the same thing she said , there was nothing they could do . The hostess came to see if everything was ok. I again asked for tortilla wraps. She returned from the kitchen minutes letter to say they were out but making more. I got up to leave, asking them to wrap it to go. So they showed up with 2 tortillas as I was picking up my purse to leave. I sat back down with my family, who were mostly finished with there meals. San Luis is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Greensboro, and the secret's out - they've just opened a San Luis II down High Point Road. I love me some chips & salsa, and they're really good here. The chips are crispy and warm, never greasy, and the cold salsa is bright red pureed with cilantro & onions. Hot sauce right on your table so you don't have to ask. San Luis has the standard Tex-Mex menu items, like quesadillas, tacos, and greasy enchiladas with lardy refried beans & bland rice. If you order those items, I wouldn't expect you'd be very impressed. But the burritos and fajitas are yum - the veggies are always super tasty. What makes San Luis truly special is the extensive seafood menu. The fried fish or shrimp tacos (3 big ones on a big plate) are quite nice, and the price rocks - $7 or $8. If you don't mind splurging beyond the $10 mark for your entree, try one of the other seafood dishes. Last time I went, I ordered the Campechana - similar to ceviche but with shrimp, scallops & raw oysters smothered in a cold tomatoey sauce, served in classic coastal style with avocado, lime, and saltines ($13). It was beautifully served in a margarita glass and was really delicious. They tried not to let on, but I could tell my dining mates were a bit jealous. Tips: ALWAYS choose corn tortillas here - they make them fresh. (You can also buy tortillas take-out for a meal at home, $.25 each.) And, there are usually coupons in the phone book. If you're a monolingual English speaker like myself, note that the staff have varying levels (ok to excellent) of English skills. I'm only giving two stars because the food is decent. The customer service is horrible. I placed a take-out order at 8:40 pm. I was told it would take 15 minutes. I also asked for my total and the hostess advised she needed to take another order and I could hold for the total if I wanted. I advised I would hold, and she hung up. I arrived at 9:05 pm. There was a lack of communication from all of the servers as to where to pick up my take-out order, or to even tell the hostess that someone was waiting. As I was waiting, there were several customers that were waiting to be seated for several minutes. I waited an extra 20 minutes for my food to be done. I'm also pretty sure I was overcharged. I ordered Fajitas Texanas for two ($21) and three shrimp tacos ($10). My total came to $38. If I had received my total in the beginning I would not be so up in the air about this. Very disappointed. Will not be back. I'm now eating my shrimp tacos and realizing that even though I asked for flour tortillas TWICE, I still got corn. read more
