This place not only examined my eyes to determine what I would need to make my vision better but it honestly gave me a feast for the eyes. They did have a significant slip-up, that I will document but that did not disqualify them from receiving five stars because it was a gap in service that with some care and attention it can be closed. I had recently lost my credit card and I went to this place only with my debit card. When I went there I did not understand that the process would cost me 89.00 dollars and that was a cost that I did not budget for but I could still cover, not because I am rich, but because in the moment I could stitch pennies and dimes together into a net of rescue. I could get something put in my eyes to dilate them for test purposes. But that would mean that I could not drive because my eyes would be blurry. But all this hassle could be avoided if I took pictures of the inside of my eyes. The eye- tech (not her actual title, I am sure) explained that they could use a retinal imaging machine to take pictures of the inside of my eyes. But this would cost extra--- 39 dollars extra, I think., or close to that price I did not write everything down, but it was around that cost. I expressed that I would opt for that option but I also expressed that someone should have told me that from the get. Like why would you not tell me the cost of services before. I came Or more broadly, why would you not present options before I attended the appointment. A friend let me borrow 50 bucks over Venmo. I sent the money back. She send me a picture where she was charged interest. I sent her 5 more dollars to ensure she got her full amount. She has her own house and an AirBandB. Meaning that some people will mind their pennies with such a pinch that they would rather bring a partner to drive them, then spend the money on the eye picture taking machine. I hope you could all understand that what I am saying is just a common sense practice that is really a best practice. Like don't surprise your guests. Let them open their eyes wide when they are asked to for eye exam purposes, not with surprise bills. I also had to order some new pairs of glasses, and that cost like 25.00 more. And then I would have to also pay the price of the co-pay. So by the end of the visit I had all I needed but at the cost of 89.00 dollars, or so. It was around that neighborhood. Being able to understand these costs upfront, again, just seems like a best practice that they should adopt. This will take their services from good to stellar, in one Yelper's opinion. However, the whole experience was like visiting my eyes within and understanding them to be a gallery at an art museum and a universe within their own right. When the eye-tech used the retinal machine to take pictures of my eyes, I was like this is super cool. She guided my head so my eye could find a camera lens. When I saw inside I saw like a machine's signature mark. Then the flash came-- a clear green blast. It was cool, and it made me imagine that I was being hypnotize by a robot witch. When I saw the optometrist he showed me the pictures taken by the machine, meaning, I saw my eyes from within. And that is were I saw the universe inside of my pupils. It looked like red branches that stretched for infinity. I should have taken pictures of the pictures. The trees within my eyes were a cosmic forest that spread throughout the space that resides within each of us. It was grand to see the promise of splendor that molds my sight of wonder. The optometrist- did not get his name- explained to me that my left eye was not working as well as my right eyed. But not only did he explain it, I could also see what he was talking about. He used another machine to cover my left eye and I saw well. When he covered my right eye, and I relied on my left, my vision was blurry, it was kind of scary to understand that my left eye had become withered due to age. It was evidence that I could see, not just feel. The eye department helped me pick a pair of shades that will come soon enough. I have transitioned into an eye glass wearer. I wanted red frames, I was informed that these were not an option. My options were either olive, blue, or black. I wanted some color. I always want some color. But I felt that the new eye tech person, from the frames department, within the store, believed it was better for me to stick to black or blue. So I did. This place was clean, professional, and moved well. I did not wait too long nor did I feel processed. I felt like my eyes mattered to them, which is a great feeling to feel at an optometrist office. read more

Beyond the optometry office where doctors see patients, they also have a section where you can shop glasses and sunglasses. We've been going to San Pedro Eye Care for a few years now, and the quality of eye care has stayed consistent. As a bonus, they have their own parking lot and so no there is no need to pay the meters. When looking for this spot, just look for the pink building :). read more

I went to San Pedro Eye because it was conveniently located, but that's the only positive thing I can say. I will never go back, and I strongly recommend avoiding this place. It took over four months to get just two pairs of prescription glasses, and I had to return them twice because of mistakes the optomotrist and the staff openly admitted were theirs. First, they told me I needed progressive lenses. I bought the frame, waited ages, and when the glasses finally arrived, the progressives didn't work at all. I went back, and only then did they tell me they made a mistake and I wasn't even a candidate for progressives -- I needed regular lenses instead. So I waited several more weeks for the new pair... only for them to put the wrong prescription in those glasses too. Back they went again. Another admitted mistake. And then more weeks of waiting. To top it off, they overcharged me for the glasses making me pay as I bought progressive instead of regular prescription. After this whole ordeal, I honestly wish I had gone anywhere else. Avoid this place unless you enjoy endless delays, repeated errors, and paying too much for the privilege. read more

The receptionists and staff are helpful and prompt. Paola, Kristen and Cynthia who conducted my various eye exams were very patient and professional. They answered all my questions and told me what each test was designed for. I worked with Lucy and i called her several times to ask some questions and she was also super informative and helpful. Dr Downing completed my surgery. Removing my cataract and astigmatism. My left eye is healing and it'll take a few more days for me to fully adjust to the new multi focal lense but I am so grateful the original optometrist I was supposed to do my surgery with sent me here. I do not have the same favorable comments for dr Agange on Torrance blvd. I wish my HMO had sent me to San Pedro first rather than dr Agange. I had a horrible experience there. Dr Agange eventually referred me to San Pedro eye center and this place took quick and professional care of my eye. read more

This place is the best all around !!! I drive from Hawthorne because they care for their patients . The eye exams are thorough and so detailed specific . They're gentle and clean ! My heart is in optical they're so patient with me , Norm and Barbara spent so much time looking for a frame and when I didn't find one I liked I came back with a online frame I found . They couldn't find it in the system but they went above and beyond to call their supplier and rep to see if they can order it specifically for me. They showed me they where doing everything they could to get it for me and they still helped look for a Plan B option . I was excited to find Dr. Hsu again and closer to home. I called right before Thanksgiving and spoke to Lani. Her voice was so welcoming you could even hear her smile through the phone, every time you call. Initially I had a few questions prior to seeing Dr. Hey and she called me so back to update me so many times. For that reason alone I decided to make this my optometrist!! When I got to my appt the place was so clean and nice. It did take a bit but every person that worked there was very efficient. Granted I also decided to come in December the busiest month for any eye doctor. I was seen by Joanna and she was very kind and gentle. Lucy came in to check on me and was so great as well. After I saw Dr. Hsu which is always great I was setup with Lois who helped me pick out the best pair of glasses for myself. They didn't have the brand I usually like but she asked the right questions and knew exactly what to show me. I picked my glasses in less than 15 min. I have been a patient of this office for decades I have always been impressed by the level of care that the staff strives to attain. A couple of weeks ago I needed to bring my 93-year-old mother in for a consult and evaluation. From the moment we entered the front door to the second we left the exam room, it was one of the most pleasant medical visits I have been a part of. We were greeted by Lani who is in my opinion the MVP of the office team. The medical techs were some of the most compassionate and professional I have ever seen. They went above and beyond to get the data points that the doctor would need to make a clear diagnosis. They were very kind and patient they reassured my mom every step of the way by speaking to her in Spanish. I have taken my Mother to many medical offices but because of her mild dementia and language issues the staff more often than not don't make the extra effort to give her the proper care and get the data that they need. Dr. Eric Downing had a wonderful bedside manner I was impressed with his bilingual abilities. He is very sincere and has the patient's best interest at heart. When it came time to do some paperwork the staff arranged to have Lucy (I believe she is the insurance specialist) come into the exam room to accommodate us. This place came highly recommended for several years but I always opted for somewhere closer to Gardena/ Torrance. If I would have known just how good they actual were in comparison to the terrible experiences I had to undergo, I would have switched over years ago! This is coming from a person who previously worked at an Eye Institute! Their service is impeccable and their staff is so on it! Despite the limited availability due to social distancing and extra precautions (which I appreciate that they do), they do their best to accommodate the patient's needs. I remember calling and requesting a new patient exam. I was given the next availability which was was a month out but after asking to be placed on the wait list and explaining my situation, I was contacted a few hours after with a cancellation for the following week! I couldn't be more thankful! The whole experience was great and all I have is gratitude for Dr. Iwai and his amazing staff. My glasses are perfect and I can finally see! Had an appointment this morning and the office is great. Each member of their staff, from the front office to the young lady that took me back, was very friendly, professional and attentive. Zero wait. Every office should have staff this efficient. I saw Dr. Sarah Maasarani and she was just as terrific. I highly recommend the new machine they used instead of the old school dilation of the pupils. Not covered by insurance but totally worth the small fee to not have blurry eyes after the exam. This place is fantastic! We were in San Pedro for a cruise. I needed to get the pressure checked in my eye. I called them at 11:00 yo see if they could do it. The person I spoke with on the phone said they were really busy that day but they would fit me in and to come in at 1:00. When we arrived the entire office was so accommodating and friendly. I have been seeing Dr. Iwai for about 30 years. ( we were both in our teens lolol). He always, and I mean always, takes as much time as needed to get my vision needs taken care of and tuned to the best result possible with my glasses and contacts. The office staff and tech's are top tier. Friendly doesn't begin to say how much they do to make me feel welcome. On the glasses side, Barb heads up a wonderful crew. They also are incredibly welcoming and take the time to help me select the best frames for my face. On a personal note, I'm going to sorely miss Norm, who recently retired. I visited SPEC last week and I have to commend the nursing staff for being so strict about cleanliness and wearing masks. The nurse took my temperature before I was allowed in. I was taken immediately to the back and given all my preliminary vision tests on equipment that had been sanitized. When Dr. Calkins saw me, he wore a mask and washed his hands thoroughly before and after my eye examination. I was escorted to Optical where strict sanitary protocols were followed while choosing my frame. My glasses came in today and I love them. I will always choose SPEC for my vision needs. My first visit was great. Staff is friendly and I got in and out in a decent amount of time. I came back for a check up on contacts. Got taken for an assessment just minutes after my scheduled appointment and then waited 45 mins to be seen by the doctor for 10 minutes. Thought I was out of the woods but then someone in the optical area said they HAD to help me. So I waited for another 20 minutes because they already had people they were helping and then had someone waiting! The amount of time a check up for contacts (and I'm not purchasing anything) was ridiculous. Staff is still great and the place is clean. But I'm not happy with the amount of time I waited and not being able to leave right away. read more

Amazing with my two little ones ages 4&7! We don't see doctors much but it was time to get their eyes checked by professionals ( we have been seeing military doctors, on small bases so they were always packed and rushed). Alas, Father Time waits for no one, and he was giving me a gentle nudge to see the eye doctor. My wife and her in-laws are patients here and have been satisfied with the optometrists and the ophthalmologist (Dr. Weinman), so I made an appointment for an eye exam. My optometrist was Dr. Culkins and he was great. He gave me a thorough exam and let me know exactly what I needed. The staff were also very friendly, and for not having vision coverage in my insurance plan, the office fee was quite reasonable.
