San Rose is one of Fort Collins' hidden gems. This little Mexican restaurant on Elizabeth is truly something special. I go in all the time, and it just keeps getting better every time. The food is incredible every time -- from the fresh chips to the insanely good bean dip, every bite tastes homemade and full of love. It was the rose-shaped coasters that sparked a conversation -- and that's when I found out Araceli, the owner, recently took over the place (formerly Tecate). She and her husband Randall run it with the help of their family -- cousins, brothers & sisters, even some locals jumping in to help on busy nights like Cinco de Mayo. You can feel that community vibe the second you walk in. Araceli is pouring her heart into San Rose, and it shows in the food, the energy, and the way this spot continues to grow. Was looking for good Mexican food in the area. Drove up from Loveland as we saw great reviews. While the outside of the place was messy (Not their fault, it throws you), the food was really good. The Spicy Bean dip was great along with good chips and salsa. Husband had Carna Asada, I had Shredded Beef Enchiladas and a beef crispy taco. The Carna Asada was wonderful, the beef enchiladas were good, husband thought they were a bit spicy. Service was good, the inside was clean So why a 4 not a 5? Hardly give 5 to anyplace. I was really craving chips and salsa, but I have to say this place was kind of a letdown. The worker who took my order was wonderful and the place looked very nice and clean, but the food was just really not good. I had the veggie enchiladas with black beans, rice, and a side of chips and salsa. The black beans were cold, bland, and way too salty. The enchiladas were under-stuffed, under-sauced, and the fajita veggies inside were still super crunchy. The rice was dry and bland, and the salsa was like canned tomato sauce with cilantro and raw onions (no spice at all). I feel like at a nicer Mexican restaurant, the salsa has to be good. Maybe some of their other items are ok, but I wouldn't recommend what I had. I normally don't write poor reviews. However, this place may be the worst establishment on the front range. First of all, the salsa is watery and tastes like dishwater. Secondly, every meal is served with watered down refried beans, reheated rice, and iceberg lettuce! But the real cherry on top is the service. The servers are rude and are slow to bring what you need if they even remember to bring it. Also, Tecate Grill confiscated my ID and essentially destroyed it before a police officer I called arrived and informed them it was in fact a real (Hawai'i) ID. THEN, I sat at the bar after this 30 minute ordeal to wait another 10 before they asked me what I wanted. No apology, nothing. I will NEVER return. Save yourself. read more

So I have been back to Tecate recently and they have really improved since my last review. The service is attentive and the food is delicious. The salsa is also less watery and actually spicy. I had the quesabirria tacos. The consume they use for dipping has a great flavor and I like the street tacos deal they have on tuesdays. Driven by this place many times, so thought I'd finally try it. I'll start by saying the guacamole was delicious! Other than that, there is no possibility about it, this is very easily the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten, and I have been to MANY places. I ordered a tostada, which was a cold, watery, flavorless pile of black beans on a soaking wet tortilla, which I assume at one point was a tostada shell. Nothing else was on the tostada but a pinch of shredded cheese barely worth mentioning. The rice seemed to be both over- and under-cooked, as hard, inedible grains of rice were found throughout the rest of the rice "paste" that was far beyond its boiling point. The enchilada tasted like canned tomatoes and nothing else, not even cheese. They make their own chips, but only about one out of every five chips is edible; the others are tougher than roofing tiles. When you are lucky enough to get a crispy one, they're delightful. The prices are reasonable, but the food is awful. Pay a little more and go somewhere better. read more

I've been going to Tecate religious every Tuesday, easily three months in a row. Last night the owner shook me down for a twenty dollar tab. We came in with our usually party of eight-ten, they failed to get a majority of our drinks and service was insanely slow, but we got our food and started to get the checks, another person in my party paid for there food and got there card back so they left. I get my card back and they bring me a extra tab explaining my friend didn't pay. So me obviously knowing it was a accident I requested if I could go outside and charge my phone to call him back to the restaurant, the answer was no. She then asked my date if she has his number and I explained both our phones are dead we need to charge them to call him. The owner wouldn't let me leave the building until I paid for a tab that was not mine and tried to shake me down to pay it instead of let me try and help her. She then tried to shake me down telling me I'm never allowed there again if I don't pay(remember I have paid for MY tab already), she then told me not to raise my voice to her and we started a screaming match, very disrespectful as I was trying to be cooperative and get her the money we owed. I called her names and I cursed her out, but she was threatening me and trying to make me pay for something when I was only trying to help her. Turns out the server took his card never ran it and gave it back to him. So he assumed he paid and left, after our screaming match I left the restaurant with the owner and all her employees following me out and I was being rude yes but I was getting shaken down for a tab I was trying to help her solve. I then went and got my friend and brought him back to the restaurant as he had every intention to pay. I was greeted with "get out of here" and people screaming at me and cursing at me . No appreciation as I didn't have to do this at all. The tab was not mine, and I didn't have to bring my friend back The owner then stepped up to my face in a aggressive manner and I dared her to hit me as her other employees held her back. I asked for my tip back as I won't be spending extra money in a place that disrespects her patrons and the owner has no self control. They told me I was on camera the entire time so they should have no issue finding where the mistake THERE server made. There's better Mexican spots. We went in on a Friday evening and were promptly seated. The place seems to be very confused as to what kind of a restaurant it wants to be as the decor is all over the place and very confusing. There appears to be an attempt to go with a sugar skull motif but its mixed with the look and feel of a sports bar with tons of televisions - we counted 16 in all. Is this a mexican food restaurant? Is it a sports bar? Is it a club? Who knows. The owners/managers don't seem to know either. There are lighted silver stars hanging from the ceiling that not only look like they are left over Christmas decorations someone was too lazy to put away, but many of the lights in the stars are burnt out. The bar area looks like its out of a disco with the changing colored neon lights bordering the tvs, including the massive tv that hangs in the middle of the bar, and all different kinds of shows playing on all the tvs which is useless since you can't hear the volume of show(s) being played. Sports are usually better to run since you don't need to hear the sound to enjoy the program. The music played is not only loud, but it is better suited for a club and not a restaurant. The thumping base of much of the music gets annoying. The music alone ruins the ambiance and feel of the place, then the tvs and the tacky lights finish it off. As for the food, we were also a bit confused since the salsa was very tasty, the chips were large unlike some places that will give you a basket of chip scraps. We also ordered queso which we enjoyed. While the queso is a bit watery, the flavor was there and the portion size was large. Our entrees however lacked seasoning. I had an asada steak that had no seasonings - not even salt. The steak was cooked well but seriously lacked flavor. My dining partner had a burrito and a taco. The burrito also was very lacking in seasoning and the taco he said was downright disgusting and had a unusual flavor he wasn't able to determine what it was. Overall, the service was friendly, fast and efficient. The decor needs work, the music needs to be changed and turned down, and the number of tv's is not necessary and should be playing something that a person can watch without needing sound. Given that the service was good and the food lacked flavor but the salsa and queso were tasty, it is possible we would try Tecate again. read more

I am shocked this place has 4 stars, I half think they have paid people to give them that good of reviews if I am being honest. I went in at 6 pm on a Friday night and we were the only table sat which is very worrisome. As the night went on it was clear why so few people were there, although they were set up to be a great sports bar they were playing tv dramas on their big screen tvs. The service was slow and painful, nobody seemed to know what they were doing or what was on the menu. Lastly their food was awful, the whole tables food came out either warm or cold nothing was hot, nothing had much flavor if any at all and the meat was tough to eat. They definitely used low low quality products and did not know how to cook their items. Will not be back and will not recommend, actually I will encourage people not to go here. read more

Got a burrito and an enchilada plate to go (Tres Amigos). Food was not very warm, but it looked nice. The rice and beans were good as was the salsa & chips. Let me start off by saying that I worked in the restaurant industry for years. I am not one to leave reviews, let alone bad ones. However, I feel this restaurant could use some good feedback since the experience was so poor. We walked in and there was only 1 table occupied in the restaurant and 1 on the patio. We were told to sit anywhere (since she did not want to push tables together outside) and it was almost 10 minutes till we were greeted by our server. She was quick to inform us that she was the only server. We put in drink orders that took over 15 minutes to come out. In the meantime we were given salsa that was so watery that you couldn't really eat it on chips. Another note about the drinks. My friends came here to get a certain type of fishbowl, but they did not have the blue liquor to make one. The server was also quick to note that the margaritas are made with a mix. Neither are good signs for a place with such a large bar. We put in appetizers that came out reasonably quick. They were spoiled when the cook who brought them out had multiple fingers in the bowl. when he realized his mistake he pretended it didn't happen and set it out in front of us anyways, without offering a new bowl. The entire table saw this happen. The server was extremely slow to take our main order. At this point I realized that she is not busy being the only server, but she is extremely slow. Not only was she inefficient, she was walking and talking slow and didn't seem like she knew what she was doing. It seemed like she did not know the menu even. The whole table could sense some attitude and lack of care with the way she was conducting herself and doing her job. But whatever, we put our orders in. My meal seemed to be the only decent one at the table. 3 people at the table got different types of enchiladas. Every one of them said that the enchiladas tasted like they were taken out of a package and slapped on a plate. They were not good. The portion looks large, but it is simply spread thin. The plates were very hot and the rice and beans were very dry which leads us to believe that the food was microwaved. The meal did not sit very well in any of their stomachs. No bueno. My street tacos Al Carbon were decent, but nothing memorable. The server was slow to come to us after this, but seemed quick enough to hand us checks. She was asking for our plates as we were just about to leave. She also asked for our signed checks while we were still there. It was not even closing time yet. Perhaps it's just because I was trained to never do this when I served, but this did not sit well with me or the others. Bottom Line: I'm sure COVID has made the employment situation questionable, but that is no excuse for this visit. Between the very poor service, poor food, and the fact that I paid over $50 for two meals, this is unacceptable. There was not a single redeeming factor over the whole experience. I will never go here again and I can't see why anybody else would want to with your quality of food and staff. read more

My boyfriend and I were greeted with complimentary salsa and bean dip. Both great. We ordered the Quesabrillia tacos and OMG they are heavenly. This is a solid 3 star joint. It's less expensive than Los Tarascos or La Buena Vida, but the food is also less flavorful. Pros: Servers are friendly, large bar seating, comfortable booths, good selection of drinks. Chips are very light and crispy. Frijoles refritos are well seasoned and have a good texture with a few larger pieces still intact. Portions are generous, both for food and alcohol. Cons: Rice is too salty, salsa too watery and bland (ask for spicy which is medium hot and add to regular salsa to improve taste, texture, and consistency). Shredded chicken is a bit dry and not very flavorful. I ordered the enchiladas trio which was advertised as 3 enchiladas, one each covered in chipotle sauce, a creamy white sauce, and a green sauce. The chipotle sauce was actually mole sauce, sweet and fruity, without the smokey heat I was expecting. The creamy white sauce was on the thin side and paled in comparison to other restaurants in the area with a similar sauce. The green sauce was a lovely thick and smooth verde smother, which turned out to be the most flavorful. To accompany my meal I had a Tecate Margarita, which was sized quite generously. It had fresh lime juice but the tequila seemed to be of a lower quality than what I prefer. My much younger self would have been quite happy with this place and probably would have frequented it quite often. I can't say I'd do the same today. read more
