The grounds are beautiful. There is plenty of parking. It is conveniently located. You can stop on your way into the Outer Banks without having to change your course at all. The staff is friendly, funny, engaging, and make you feel like you are at home. The winery does not offer a menu that we saw, but the oyster crackers that went with our tasting were perfect:) If you visit, sanctuary, vineyards and you like sweet wine like me. Take home a bottle of the Grace, you will not be disappointed!! we will be back again next year and hopefully as retirement quickly approaches we will be back on a much regular basis. read more

My mom and I were surprised that we would be able to hit up a winery on this vacation. We didn't expect one in North Carolina. We always seem to find one winery or distillery to stop at when we go somewhere. We stopped here and had a tasting. The tastings are free when you purchase a bottle of wine. Because of COVID, we were given a tasting tray with little cups filled with the wine. We sat on a couch in the main room. The gift shop has a lot of cool items. I purchased a couple bottles of wine. Sixteen of my friends and I had wine flights to sample as much as possible of this vineyard's offerings. We loved all of it and bought several bottles to take home. This caused our flights to be free of charge, which is a sweet deal I haven't been experienced in the wineries of California or Virginia so far. We did the Vineyard Voyage for $79/person. Upon arriving at the dock in Duck, we were greeted by the boat captain. Then, we took a 25 minute boat ride across the Sound to the vineyard and winery. Upon arriving, we then boarded a truck and were driven around the vineyard. We entered through the tank and barrel room. Then, we sat at a table reserved for us to enjoy the wine tasting in the tasting room. We tried about 7 wines, but it took forever. There was a lot of talkie talkie and stories...but I appreciated our hostess's enthusiasm. They have quite the variety of about 17 wines....white, rose, red, sweet...something for everyone. I was surprised with staying in VA Beach that there weren't many open field wineries. They all seem to be in a mall. Anyway, we decided to venture towards the OBX on a Thursday from VA beach to Sanctuary. This place not only exceeded my expectations but also expanded my pallet a bit with grapes. The inside is not very big which is my only knock. If you buy a bottle you get a free tasting per person. We happened to visit on a live music Thursday which was awesome. Sanctuary vineyards is lovely! I went for a tasting with two friends and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can choose to have 5 small samples of a variety of whites, reds, or sweet wines. There was great variety and the wine was tasty. The tasting is free if you buy a bottle, and the wine is affordable ($15-25 per bottle). We were blown away by the friendliness and hospitality of Elton and the other staff members. There is a scenic outdoor space with picnic tables to drink the wine. Tours of the vineyard are on pause due to COVID, but there are periodic concerts with live music. Make sure to drive to the Vineyard, as Uber does NOT pick up reliably from this location. read more

Definitely a must stop if you're in the area. We were on our way back home from OBX and decided to check this place out. First of all, they have free tastings that include about 13 different wines. I've never been to a vineyard that had that many free tastings. They were also very generous with their pours so kudos to them. We liked some of their wines and ended up buying a bottle of rose (The Light Keeper). Some of my other faves were the Chardonnay and Morton. The lady that was helping us was very knowledgeable about the wines and really friendly. Because of Covid, the tastings are held outside which was fine. I'm not reviewing the wine because all red wine pretty much tastes the same for me... But this place as a venue, wow. I was really impressed. Jarvisburg, NC doesn't have much going on. This vineyard sits along the main road in this very rural area. I attended a wedding Saturday afternoon and I was pleasantly surprised how things turned out. The venue itself was very simple by design. They had an entrance, a couple seats on the lobby, a small bar/reception area, and a warehouse/garage where all the magic wine making happens. What was so impressive with this place was how they transformed the warehouse/garage for the wedding reception. Being surrounded by wine barrels with string lights hanging above made for a pretty setting. I did try to gargle water from the bathroom and could tell it was well water. I wouldn't recommend doing that. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the wedding and visit to the vineyard. read more

Not a fan of sweet wines. The service was horrible and when I asked questions about grape types they very much told me they have 18 varieties of grapes. That is great but what type of grapes. They are not very nice at all. The wine was not great. I guess I am used to Washington and Oregon and of course California wines. Would not return for sure. read more

Best wine tasting deal EVER.....It's free and you get 10 wines but you can pay and add 8 extra fancy sips which of course I did. DUH! The wines were all very delicious also. They serve you in a nice glass and have a huge long bar that a lot of people tend to gather around and stay for a bit. Folks are very friendly. I purchased some Wild Pony White because I am always about a good cause were proceeds go back to help the animals. In this instance it helps support the local wild horses on the beach. We visiting Duck over winter break and between a Pandemic and it being winter there was not much going on so we looked for something and am so glad we came across this out of the way spot. We've passed this place for years every time we head down to OBX, but this year I made a point to have us stop in for the tasting. Good news - the wine tasting is free! You can purchase a bottle if you like something and hang out or get it to take home with you. The ladies working were incredibly nice, and even worked hard to cheer up a very cranky four-year-old who had accidentally snoozed off in the car. Of the wines, I really enjoyed their Rose, the Triangle White, and the Shipwreck Red. We bought a bottle of each to take home. Loved that they had North Carolina local history lessons that accompanied each wine that explained the creative process behind it as well as the ways they are tied to the local community. Also, there is a cute silly cut out for pictures outside that was actually a lot of silly family fun. In all, if you are driving down to the beach, consider stopping here before your trip and picking up some great selections to enjoy there, or on the way home to take a little vacation with you. This was the best winery I've visited hands down! The diversity of the wines and flavors was astonishing and Kathleen was so nice! I think she was the nicest person we met on our entire vacation. She was the one helping us throughout our tasting and she was very knowledgeable. We also met another girl working, Taylor, who was very friendly as well. We unfortunately had to cut out of the tour a little early but she was a great tour leader and really informative about the history of the winery and the growing and processing of the grapes. This is our first time here. First impression the grass is a foot tall and needs to be cut, you have a pirate cutout picture taking spot, then you enter...I see an empty bar to the left and a couple tables with people tasting wine flights...dead silence...I'm confused because no one is there to greet you, no signage-I wasn't sure where to go....we went straight ahead where I thought it was maybe an employee area but apparently it's a bar in the rear of the building. We are told wine flights are $5 each for dry, sweet etc and $10 for reserve. It's free if you buy a bottle. You are also limited to ONE wine flight??? One wine flight doesn't even equal a glass of wine. I don't know if that is a NC law or your rule but that was ridiculous especially when you have well over 10 wines. Some Jamaican music was turned on when we sat down. The flight was served with oyster crackers which was nice. A charcuterie option is available for purchase which was $25 for a small box. The Plank wine should be served before the Lightkeeper as it's dryer, The BlackBerry should be served before the Blueberry as it's also dryer...also the BlackBerry needs to be served chilled not room temp especially since you have the Blueberry chilled. The Sweet Serenity was our favorite choice. the bar manager/staff was very kind and helpful! This is just a little constructive criticism and observation. We planned day of OBX Wine Tasting, curious about North Carolina wines. Sadly, two of the vineyards we planned to visit on Knotts Island had closed!! So sad! We shook off our disappointment and headed Sanctuary Vineyards. We were the first to arrive and so had the luxury of enjoying a tasting with Elton before any other guests arrived. He let us sample the Cab Franc grapes fresh from the harvest, then let us take an impromptu tour of the "back of the house" where harvested grapes were being put though the de-stemmer. It was an interesting and unexpected treat! Our tasting consisted of 10 wines, 4 whites, 3 reds and 3 sweet wines. Now, come on, dude, don't judge!! The sweet wines if you give them a chance can produce quite an surprising wine note. We each picked a glass of our favorite wine (me, Traingle; my husband, Shipwreck) and took it outside to sit on the lovely porch of the tasting room. We choose a bottle to take home to have with our seafood dinner, the Wild Pony - - a combination of NC Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. PLUS very excited that proceeds of the sale of that wine benefit the Corolla Wild Horse Fund! I love that. When we went to pay, SURPRISE, tastings are FREE?? What? That is unbelievable! It was 5:58pm, pouring rain, and we had a couple minutes before all the wineries were closing. Once I realized we weren't going to make it, I stopped urging my husband to floor it and realized we would just have to make it out to Sanctuary Vineyards another time. We went there anyway, just to confirm they were closed, and the closed sign was up....but the owner saw us and motioned for me to come in anyway. I thought that was very hospitable and was glad I would be able to check the box. It was empty inside but a very cool, open layout with approximately 10-12 different wines to taste. The owner allowed me to taste whatever I wanted and offered generous pours. They really have a wide range of drys and sweets, my particular favorites being the Whalehead White and Wild Pony White, buying a bottle of each for $15/pop. All in all, I found this to be one of the better wineries in NC because they don't offer only sweet/fruit ones but have a wide range to appeal to many crowds. We passed this place every year on our way to Avon and finally got the chance to stop in! Also not many places offer free wine tastings so why not?! This was the weekend of the Wedding Expo in Kill Devil Hills so they were in the process of breaking down Decor so not sure what it normally looks like. Minimum decor, a nice wine gift shop attached and you walk through another entrance to get to the wine tasting area and where you would go on a wine tour (see days and time on website). We have met the owner Elton at the expo last year and ran into him again this year and he is sociable, friendly and very knowledgeable when it comes to the wine. We didn't get to see him today during our visit but if your there and he is I promise it will be a good time! For our tasting we had Karen do our pouring. Very nice and friendly. I did expect more of a wine description during each pour and maybe a splash more in my glass but either way it was worth the stop;) They offer whites and reds that range in price from $14-$40 and dry to sweet. There were out of the some one of my favorates (The Wright Brothers) but then had some new ones (Double Barrell). Customer service was excellent.
