Sando Cafe is a small spot with about four tables and a bit of counter seating -- likely better suited for takeout than dining in. Service was very friendly and attentive. They even have cute little buttons on the tables you can press to buzz for service, which was a nice touch. My daughter had the Ebi Udon soup and I ordered the Katsudon. Everything tasted fine. The issue wasn't flavor -- it was how filling the meals were. Both dishes felt light for dinner. The Katsudon was mostly white rice (probably three-quarters of the bowl) with pork cutlet on top. It was tasty, but halfway through I felt like I was just eating rice. They do have a restroom in the back for customers, and there's no credit card fee (yaay). Overall, decent food and very nice service -- just better suited for a light lunch than a full dinner before a show. read more

Stopped by for a little montclair lunch and was excited to try their sandos! I brought in quite a group, but luckily it was a slower day so they allowed us to put some tables together, but otherwise, expect to come with just a friend or two as seating can be very limited. My service may have been impacted by inclement weather, but while the server was very nice and courteous, after ordering, it did take about an hour to recieve food, even as it came out in waves as it was ready. The chicken karage was not your typical style, fried with a light coating of what seemed to be tapioca starch, which was less crispy but still flavorful and delicious. We were expecting wafu fries to be waffle fries, but they were instead similar to okonomiyaki style fries which was a pleasant surprise. Their okonomiyaki was fantastic, crispy yet still moist inside, and seasoned generously. Their sandos on the otherhand were pretty well-packed, but didn't stand out flavorwise to me and any of the selections we made. Their niku udon on the otherhand was a warm, comforting bowl of bouncy noodles, and quite a large portion for its price. To finish off our meal, we had their mitarashi dango (grilled sweet soy sauce that was definitrly the star of the meal, warm and chewy and tasted like honey) as well as their kusa red bean dango (served cold, and generously coated with red bean, but the cold temperature made them extra tough to chew and a very mild grassy flavor). Overall, one of the many solid choices for a mid day meal in Montclair. Parking, as per usual in Montclair, have plenty of street parking options, or thr crescent parking tower is not too far a walk. read more

My mouth is watering thinking about this meal I had today. My friend and I split wafu fries (addictive!) and I had a chicken katsu sando. Chicken is so crunchy! Bread is so soft! Sauces are perfect! I also had strawberry milk bubble tea - tastes like pocky! The tapioca boba was that perfect "al dente" texture and slightly sweet from being in a syrup. Absolutely loved Sando Cafe - everything was 10 outta 10. The space is really tiny and cozy. I'd imagine they do a good amount of takeout business. We were able to snag a table though which was nice! A katsu sando is a must and the crispy fried chicken was perfection. I've had sandos a few times and don't always see an egg on it. I really liked this! Sharing a sando and a few small plates was the perfect meal. We also loved the pork gyoza, seaweed salad and fried potato croquettes. They have some really fun drinks that come in the cutest branded cup. Loved the sweet peach tea! The proces are high for what it is, but then, it is Montclair. Also, in the US anything Japanese is considered premium quality. Location and perception lead the prices. I love the mitarashi dango: they come smothered in sweet and salty thick sauce. The dango are chewy mochi balls, and are just pleasant to snack on with a cup of iced coffee. It is a welcomed distinguished dessert from the overly sweet pastries one is used to. The tamago sando is great. It is loaded with boiled eggs and mayonnaise and crispy shredded lettuce. Comfortably filling albeit a bit messy to eat. If they were available in jersey city I would be a regular. If you have kids, they will love it too...a clever way to trick them into eating vegetables. read more

The tempura crisp on the ebi was spot on and the broth was delicious with a perfectly poached egg. Fruit bubble teas were refreshing and customizable for sugar and ice. Will be back! Love it!! Cute new Japanese cafe, right on Bloomfield Ave. The lady who handles the front of the house is very friendly and sat us right away. Great selection of casual Japanese eats. We shared the Chicken Kaarage, and Wafu Fries to start. Both were delicious. I also had the Pork Sando. Omg, delicious! Pork katsu, tamago, shredded cabbage, sauce, all on soft milk bread. I inhaled this sandwich. My friend had the Curry over Rice with Tofu Katsu. Very generous portion. It was also delicious. They have a really fun selection of drinks. I tried the Passionfruit Tea with Green Tea. Excellent! The prices are very reasonable. There were a bunch of other items on the menu that I would like to try, so I will be back! read more

I was eager to try Cafe Sando ever since reading about the special egg salad sandwiches they serve in Japan. This is not your standard deli egg salad sandwich. It's prepared with special sweet mayonnaise, "milk bread," and the egg itself is more pulverized--all to create a creamy, sweet mouthfeel. It also features a full split hard boiled egg and shredded cabbage. I was not disappointed. The ingredients of the "tamago sando" were fresh and flavorful. Since this is my first taste of the genre, I can't compare it to others like it. But I enjoyed it very much. To drink, I tried the Sakura tea, green iced tea flavored with cherry blossoms. The server asked what level of sweetness I preferred, since she was to make it fresh in a shaker. I said "regular" in order to establish a baseline. Next time I'll ask for light (but not zero) sweetener. Your mileage may vary, but you'll want to have an answer to that question if you order it. Finally I ordered a fruit sando for dessert. This is like strawberry shortcake served on the sweet, fluffy milk bread instead of shortcake. I found the ingredients delicious and fresh, but felt a bit stuffed afterwards. Cafe Sando is a nice atmosphere. Japanese pop music plays, and there are about five small tables and seats at the coffee bar. If you want a taste of Japan in Montclair, I recommend it. read more

so excited to see more asian food in the area, especially a new japanese restaurant! the prices here are very affordable, especially compared to the rest of the neighborhood. most of the menu was around $10 or below!! the food here was delicious!! we plan on coming here often, the katsu sando and curry over rice was delicious and so flavorful, but the katsu sando definitely was the best! so tender and crispy and delightful! making good food takes time, so be prepared to wait a bit during the food rush hours for your food, but it's worth it! staff was friendly and constantly busy with all the customers, but they have a button on each table that helps you call the wait staff. there's only 4 small tables, so takeout is definitely a good option as well if you can't get a table. street parking only. read more

Food here has consistently been great! Their mango or passion fruit with hojicha tea best option and it comes served in the cutest cups. The potato croquettes are perfectly crisp and full of flavor. The real stars, though, are the sandwiches (Sandos) -- from tamago and kani salad to chicken or pork, every option hits. Don't skip the booster combo: chicken katsu with tamago is hands down the best pairing. Everything is made fresh to order, and their gyozas and rice bowls are excellent too. Finally something different in Montclair!!!! And it's delicious! Hoorah! We had such a great meal here. Ordered the pork katsu sando, absolutely delicious. Great breading, good flavor on pork, the sauce and bread and cabbage were perfect complement. We also had the kimchi gyudon, it was so tasty. Truly comfort food. Kimchi top notch. This is a small place with amazing food. The owner was incredibly helpful as one of the guests had physical disability, the owner pitched in and helped make us comfortable. Excellent little addition that is unique. The katsu sandwich is tasty and the white bread nice and fluffy exactly like what you would find in Japan. The curry is also good. If you like curry this is what you would expect - warm and comforting. The takoyaki also was good - and has more octopus in it than most places give. I came here for one of the sandos which originally drew me in but then I saw the rest of the menu. We're in town for work so we wanted something a little more satisfying. We always go all out so don't judge us bc we didn't finish a single thing as the portion sizes were great. We got the okonomiyaki, tokoyaki, chicken karaage, curry gyudon as well as the okoyudon. Everything was so hot and amazing. The okonomiyaki was so soft and creamy on the inside and so crunchy on the outside my boyfriend was even surprised as to how much he enjoyed it. The tokoyaki was so tender I've definitely had some chewy pieces of octopus in some previous but this was so soft, tender and luscious. The curry gyudon was a first for me but I thought it was awesome. I did add a little of the spice that was on the table as it wasn't spicy enough for me which really took it to the next level. The service was amazing as well, there was one guy working the whole front making all of the drinks and serving everyone and still didn't miss a que. We did get a few tea drinks as well I got the mango with tapioca and my boyfriend got a black tea latte. Perfect sweetness and always love a little tapioca ball. As far as I could tell there was only one person in the back as well and everyone was crushing it because it was an amazing experience all around.
