I have been to the Humane Society a few times with my dog. They are timely, fairly priced, and offer an array of services needed by the public. Each time we visited, we were given a thorough statement regarding the treatment our dog received. She got shots at one visit and was treated for an ear infection on another. She recovered well from her ear infection. They do not overdo it on treatment either. I recommend the Humane Society for your pet needs. read more

They said it's to not stress the animals but since when has love stressed an animal, unless someone is not reading the animals body language. I never go to a shelter for a certain animal, I go to see if there is a special connection and then adopt if I feel that. Love this shelter. It's not only the cleanest I have been to but has the most welcoming staff. I have been to many shelters and almost all have had unwelcoming staff who make you feel like you're inconveniencing them for being there. I have had so many negative experiences with other shelters it made me not want to adopt again. This shelter makes you feel welcome and they also are ready to give you all the information you need on the shelter animals. Not only that but they are happy for you to just love on the babies. It's so important that they feel love while waiting for their forever homes. The shelter staff worked with us to surrender a sweet stray, get him neutered and all his vaccines and out into a loving home of a neighbor who really wanted him, but couldn't take him in until he was vetted and safe to be with other cats. WARNING DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE! Brought my dog for her shots and to get her nails trimmed. Prior to getting her nails trimmed I asked for the price- we were told $10. My dog started to cry as she was put on the table to get her nails trimmed, the lady in the back made eye contact with me and I smiled at her...While getting her nails trimmed my dog was spanked multiple times, I was watching through the window. When we paid I noticed on the receipt that we were charged $20 for her nail trimming. When we inquired about the price we were told that it was because my dog was freaking out and it took multiple people to restrain her. I told her that next time she should warn people that if dogs freak out during a nail trim there will be a higher fee... she then POINTED AT ME ANGRILY AND ACCUSED ME OF LAUGHING AT HER (which leads me to believe the extra fee was because she was angry). I corrected her and told her that I was not laughing at her, I simply smiled when we made eye contact. She then told me that next time my dog needs a nail trim she will need to be sedated... now I'm wondering what kind of people work here.. clearly incompetent people that cannot handle a dog scared to get her nails trimmed. So in conclusion... if you bring your dog here, DONT SMILE (it will be misinterpreted as you laughing at them) ; beware that the prices are subject to change depending "on how many people need to restrain your dog" or (depending on the supervisors mood that day); and keep an eye on your dog when they are in a different room because you never know how they will get treated when you are not around (my dog got spanked).. She told me next time my dog will need to be sedated... I told her next time I will go elsewhere. Again, IF YOU LOVE YOUR FURRY PET, DO NOT COME HERE! I had the worst experience with this shelter after I adopted our little one. I was told to return on that Saturday for a teeth cleaning that our fur baby needed and was even given instructions on what to do before the appointment. I emailed the clinic the next day to confirm the appointment a few days before, as I live 40 minutes away. The clinic had emailed me back stating that they don't have any appointments for her. I then called the shelter and the staff member once again stated that in the dogs chart it did state a teeth cleaning was scheduled however she will need to return my call for verification. I received a call from Aubrey the manager within the shelter stating that there was a miscommunication. In her chart it stated she did need a cleaning and they would of gone ahead and got it done but only if she was still in their care. She then proceeded to rudely say, "Do you want to return her? Either way she'll be adopted with or without a cleaning". Moreover, I asked whether she was part of the Santa Barbara County Shelter as I've never been treated in such a disrespectful manner. When asked this question, she said "Well, we are in Santa Barbara County" completely ignoring the fact I was inquiring about their connection to the County shelters. Being a first time pet owner and first time adoption parent, I thought this experience overall would have been wonderful and fulfilling. I love our new pet and love that she has been given a new home; however, it is still very frustrating to have to deal with this experience, especially given this negatively affects our pet's dental health. I'd also like to add this review in no way pertains to the services provided at the clinic. They've been really helpful in answering my questions and following up with me. A completely different experience than what I've endured with the shelter. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL TO BE GROOMED HERE!!! If I could give my experience ZERO stars I would! I took my two dogs here and they came home uneven and chunks of fur missing. One of the dogs face wasn't trimmed after specifically asking the groomer to do so. My other dogs ears looked ridiculous- one was significantly longer than the other. Someone explained my dogs groom as it looked like they got in a dog fight and lost. So upsetting. The most upsetting part was paying $90 for a sub-par groom only to come home and have to FIX their hair cut. To top it off one of my dogs was either burned or cut. A huge red patch was scabbed over the next day. If the money was not going to a good cause I would ask for it back. Like I said, do not take your animals here. You will regret it. read more

Miracle workers is how I feel about this clinic. I brought my 5 year old pit in with a stomach problem, he was refusing to eat and was vomiting any water he would drink he was very weak when I brought him in and our family was very worried. I was referred to them by Care 4 Paws. The doctor talked to me personally and asked me what was going on and they took him in on short notice and really helped me out. The doctor was comforting and gave me full details on what our options would be and really felt like she cared for my dog. The techs also showed so much care and compassion for him. I cannot stress how well my dog was looked after while in there care. I am so grateful the doctor was able to perform an emergency surgery and see my dog do so much better after. He is still recovering but he is happy and not in pain when we first brought him in. Thank you Santa Maria Humane for all you did for RENGO and for all you continue to do for other pets. I took my dog to get spayed yesterday. When I dropped her off the staff was really rude. When I picked her up it was even worse. They didn't tell me anything about after treatment and just gave me a flier for a 24 hour emergency clinic "in case anything happens". I really did not like seeing the staff hand people their animals and just turned around without saying a word. It definitely made me feel like my dog (and others) could be mistreated while being seen. When getting home I looked at her dissolvable adhesive suture, and it looks just extremely weird and abnormal to me... I'm worried that this will cause infection. And after reading other reviews saying how the business refused take responsibility upsets me. Good thing I have lawyers.... read more

One star for the lady I spoke to that set up my appointment today. I would have come in earlier but she gave me an afternoon appointment and when I was almost there I get a call that the dog is being adopted. I came from Santa Barbara. Not only that but she was condescending when I called back (had to try five more times to get her on the phone). I asked if there were other small dogs that maybe weren't put on the website that I could come check out and she said "do you see any?" after a long pause. I literally had to say "hello?" DO NOT GET YOUR PET SPAYED OR NEUTERED HERE! We took our sweet 5 month old puppy here to get spayed, after which she had infections on and off for several months, and even went into heat! We took her to our vet at the first sign of a problem and he said he could try giving her antibiotics, but if the problem kept recurring it was likely that there was not enough tissue removed to compete the spay and that it would probably continue to cause problems unless we had the process competed. To spare our pet any more issues, we had him go back in and remove the remaining tissue, and thankfully she has not had any problems since. Ironically after the "low cost" spaying, almost $1000 of additional vet visits and another surgery later, the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society refused to take any responsibility for their botched operation. They apparently care more about covering their own arse with their waiver than the health of the pets they treat. Shame on them and the veterinarian that performed this hack job of surgery on our poor dog. Low cost spaying and neutering shouldn't mean compromising the health of your pet. Very, very disappointing. Even more disappointing and disturbing is Santa Maria Valley Humane Society's response to this review and their refusal to accept any responsibility. Our dog went into heat after the spaying procedure they performed! Because of that and the multiple infections our dog experienced before the second operation performed by our vet to correct the problem, no third party can possibly dispute that there was a problem with the procedure performed by Santa Maria Valley Humane Society. read more

very helpful staff i adopted my 1-2 year old maltese/mix aka Wolfy from here and never expected to find one i would make a connection but i did and really glad i came to just browse if you are in search of a cat or dog it does not hurt to just drop by and look that is what i did and found mans best friend once again he was up to date with shots, spayed/neutered and adoption fee is $90-120 depending on their age which is worth it considering they put $150+ into him, once i get a house i plan to adopt again i really recommend adopting instead of buying a pet off the street thanks again! you guys changed mine and my family's life for the better! read more

Great spay price! I got both of my dogs, Roxy and Ayla spayed just last Friday and I was very happy with the experience. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Ayla's incision is almost completely healed after one week and the scar will be very small! They also clipped both dogs nails while they were under! The only reason I am giving 3 stars is because of poor little Roxy. I noticed the day after the surgery, the person who shaved her did a really poor job. They went clear up the side of her body and left nick marks around her nipples, even some visible scratches and razor marks (like this: //////// ). It was pretty obvious whoever shaved Ayla did not shave Roxy. Well I did not think anything of it since the stitches looked okay. 3 days later (Monday now) Roxy broke out in a full blown rash all over her belly and nipples, obviously from the razor since there was no rash on the incision. After some cortisone she is doing much better now but after being through surgery the last thing she needed was a razor rash. My advice to them, be more careful when shaving the dogs sensitive areas and make sure your clippers are clean! Other than that I was very satisfied with the services read more

I took my 5 month old Chihuahuas "Chika" to be spayed at the clinic. The people at the clinic were very professional. It was no different than going to my vet, maybe better. They charged $99 which is about 1/3 what my vet charges. I figured that they do so many sprays that they were probably more experienced than any vet. You have to make an appointment about a month in advance. You drop your pup off at 7:30 a.m. and pick it up at 3:30 p.m. Very positive experience. read more

My family and I adopted a nice black dog from the Santa Maria humane society just under a year ago, within less then 2 days the dog broke in our glass door to get at our house cat, the dog killed the house cat named Cici within seconds, while my 4 year old daughter was watching. We call the santa maria humane society who refused to take the dog back and recommended calling the county animal control who came and removed the dog from my home. santa maria humane society did step up an refunded our money for the adoption an made a promise we could come in at any time and pick a new pet at any point in time, so that brings us to today's event. My wife and I with our two small children returned to the Santa Maria humane society to look fr a small dog to add to our family, we found one that my kids just loved and the dog Gus loved them, however the girl at the front desk was not willing to let us adopt the pet, as she knew about our past issue and was concerned. Even with staff her own staff members saying it was a perfect match she wanted the manager who went to lunch to approve the adoption. She said to my wife and I to come back within the hour or better yet give me your cell number and I will call you. Great we were happy with that, an hour and 30 minutes pass, no call not a word, so we drove back out to the Santa Maria humane society where she told my wife that her manager decided to take rest of the day off and would not return till Tuesday and she would have to refuse our application at this point pending a managers approval. Needless to say they had my kids jumping for joy that we were taking home Gus today, to now crying for Gus for the past 90 minutes. The staff at Santa Maria humane society is heartless and could careless if they hurt the feelings of children do to there laziness and lack of proper communication and the unwillingness to work with the community. I adopted our sweet dog Pongo yesterday and the people that work there were the absolute BEST. Friendly, informative and upbeat. Right now in the month of October it's only $20 to adopt any animal. All animals are spayed or neutered, have all shots, are wormed and groomed. Also chipped. You can't beat that with a stick. There was no pressure. The place was very clean and it was a great place to volunteer. They made us feel comfortable and made the process very easy and pleasant. I'm grateful for the food we took home with us that will feed Pongo for about 6 months knowing we were on Social Security. Thank you for everything and we plan on writing a children's book about 'Pongo finds a forever home'. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. So much so, I shed a tear or two. My partner Laurie and I thank all the volunteers, those that give money as well as time to keep this place open for people like us to come and choose a new family member. I'm a traveling Clown and plan on teaching Pongo how to do many trick to delight young and old. He's so smart and willing to please. He's quiet, well behaved, so loving, and just perfect for our family. He joins Miss Pickles who up until now has been an only child. She's warming up to him, but must let him know who is boss. I visited the wellness clinic today and I have to say the service was horrible! I stood in front of the desk for 15 min before anyone even came out to see what I needed. I'd understand if it was busy but the door was completely open and you could hear what the volunteers/receptionists were talking about. They were literally having a conversation about tacos. We just adopted a super sweet cat from the SMVHS about two weeks ago and it was a wonderful experience. We fell in love with a cat that has medical issues and instead of pretending they didn't exist, they were very clear that we'd have to wait to adopt her until she was given medical clearance, which would be a few more days. I'm not going to lie, that was a really hard few days, the not knowing if they'd say she was going to be okay or if she was going to need even more medical care. Thankfully, after a few days (and multiple messages from me checking on her) she became available on their website and we rushed right over to be sure that she came home with us. I was thrilled that we were given her medical history from the Taft Humane Society as well as anything during her time over here in Santa Maria so that we can take all that to our vet and not have to start over. They spent quite a bit of time explaining what adopting a cat with her issues would be and making sure that we understood what we would need to watch for and to do for her. We've received a followup call asking how she's doing, which shows me that they really do care where these animals end up. The other thing that made me especially happy when we were looking at the animals there was how clean everything was and how the staff/volunteers took the time to answer questions and helped make sure we got the right animal for us. We now have another member of our family, thanks to the SMVHS, and we are so grateful! read more

Just don't go to their rummage sale. All their ad said was "rummage sale." As die-hard rummagers we trekked out, selected our junk (let's face it people) and found out nothing was priced - it was donation only. So my husband and I conferred and decided on a very generous price for our goods (rummaging is one of our hobbies so we know what stuff is supposed to go for at these sales). Well, the person there asked for twice that and then stood over me until I picked out that much from my bag of change. I've never felt so used at a rummage sale in my life. This hard sell colors my whole view of this humane society should I ever have to use it in the future.
